The Easter Bunny cometh.. c Have you noticed it’s staying lighter for stayin longer? Already? Happy long days! That means that days Spring will soon be in Spri the air and warmer weather (a degree or we two) will be with us tw longer. And this before much m month we have Easter too. too Cue chocolate, Inside this month........ very excited small children and temptation in spades for some of us. What’s On in March

Spring is a time of new beginnings and in our neighbourhood we have a new bar (Signatures in Walton Road, KT8), and opportunities to try something new (skydiving with Princess Alice Hospice or volunteering in some capacity with local organisations). There is also the chance to make new friends if you are single and over 60 with Just Friends (p28). Or, you can take in a lunchtime concert with Music on the Green. Makes a very pleasant change from a sandwich in the offce. Don’t, whatever else you do this month, forget that Mothers’ Day is earlier than usual! 6th March - write it down or your life won’t be worth living for the next twelve months. Trust me. I’m a mother.

LEWIS Cheap trains, drains and automobiles Some folks drive a lot for various reasons be it business or personal, here a few tip to help cut the cost of travel. ● Free tank of fuel via extreme couponing trick. If you’re planning a big spend at any one of 50+ retailers (including House of Fraser, Homebase and PC World), buy the gift card in Morrisons and you get 1p/litre off fuel per £10 spend. So £100 gets 10p off and £1,000ish gets a free tank. The real trick isn’t to use them as gifts, but that if you’re planning a big purchase in that store anyway, first pop into Morrisons and buy the gift card. Then a few days later, once it’s active, go and use it to buy your planned purchase, giving you a potentially whopping petrol discount. There’s a full list of retailers and more info at www. morrisonsfuelsaver.co.uk. ● Turn your heating down, but not off if you’re going away If it gets cold, no heating risks burst pipes. So much so that some insurers won’t cover you for damage if your home’s unoccupied for more than five days and you turned the heating off. The rule of thumb is keep it to a minimum 14 degrees. ● Buying two tickets for one train journey can save you

£100s

it, as their landlord’s likely responsible. Check.

Split ticketing makes about as much sense as Chewbacca, but it works. It’s where you buy tickets for a journey’s constituent parts separately to slash the price. It’s allowed by the conditions of carriage – the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. For example, a single from Manchester to Cornwall costs £158, but the train stops at Cheltenham Spa. Buy a £52 ticket from Manchester to Cheltenham Spa, then a £58 one from there to Cornwall and the total’s £110. That’s the same train, the same time – possibly even the same seat. To help find if you can do this for your journey, use my free TicketySplit tool at mse.me/ ticketysplit. As Justine tweeted me: “Genius - tickety split has just saved me £50, no effort, exact same journey.” ● Cheap boiler cover you don’t need to stick with your energy firm Boiler cover is a free market, yet energy firms like you to think you need to stick with them. You don’t. While British Gas charges £12/month, you may be able to get similar cover for as little as £6. My quick tips: a) Renters usually don’t need

10

b) Ensure you know what cover you need. Choose between boiler-only, the cheaper option that covers your boiler and its controls, or central heating cover, which includes full central heating cover on top (including radiators, pipes, etc). c) To find the cheapest, compare prices via uSwitch.com and add in Energyhelpline.com if you’ve time. ● Get a year’s breakdown cover for £17. If your car has had trouble during the winter season, it can be costly to pay it back in the Spring. Thankfully, if you know what you’re doing you can get super cheap cover. There are four things you need to know: - If you’re renewing, haggle. 84% of AA and 76% of RAC customer who tried reported success. - If you’re new then for basic cover use a cashback site. A standard RAC policy is £28 online and an AA policy £35, but sites like Topcashback. co.uk and Quidco.com give around £10-£15 back so the effective cost to you is £18ish. This usually works, though do note the cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed.

www.atstrees.co.uk OAK PROCESSIONARY MOTH (OPM) Infestations of OPM caterpillars were first surveyed and monitored in Richmond upon Thames in 2006. Since then the population has gradually expanded and it has moved west and south to reach into Epsom, Elmbridge and Guildford Boroughs.

OPM NEST TREATMENT At ATS, we use an environmentally friendly, Forestry Commission endorsed, chemical called Dipel DF. It is a living bacterium (Bacillus thuringienis) which when applied is ingested by the caterpillars. We apply the chemical when it is most efficient between mid-April to June. For large sites and multiple trees, we use our specialist 4X4 Ultra Low Volume spray unit which can reach heights of 30m. For single spot treatments we use a portable knapsack sprayer. Later in the season we switch to manual nest removal with the aid of industrial vacuum cleaners to literally ‘suck’ the nests and caterpillars off the trees. The bags are then removed by a specialist waster transfer company for incineration.

HEALTH ISSUES OPM is of a major public health concern for several reasons. In its later stages of its caterpillar development, between late May and early June, the caterpillars are covered in minute hairs that contain a toxin. If those hairs become in contact with skin various persistent symptoms can occur. This includes an itchy rash, sore throats, conjunctivitis and respiratory problems. If you suspect you have come into either direct or indirect contact with OPM, you should contact either NHS direct (0845 4647) or a General Practitioner.

Perfect Plants Small Trees By Steve Law http://brightonplants. blogspot.co.uk/ Decades of gardening for other people has taught me that there are topics that clients find difficult. I’m fairly confident about what plants do but it can be hard to share that confidence with customers who worry about ‘things getting out of hand’. It’s understandable – many popular species are monstrous things. Garden centre labels can be misleading and it’s important to research. Thus when I say to my customers “You know what you need here? A tree” they’re sceptical, especially given that some of their gardens are little more than paved yards. But there are many genuinely small trees about, if you know what to look for. I could recommend a tree that grows to 20ft and they are aghast, imagining it filling what little space they have and blotting out the sun, undermining the house as it goes. In fact, a 20ft tree is really not very big. In a woodland amongst mature trees it’s just a sapling, and it’s sad how rarely a customer has given in and let me plant a small tree in their yard. There’s nothing like a tree to really give a space that third dimension,

to relieve the monotony of the flat garden floor and the four walls that surround it. As a compromise, they may plant a tree against the boundary – pushing it to the edge. I say plant it nearer the middle, off to one side of the lawn or at the front of the border, or near the house. Very few trees damage drains and foundations and they’re mainly vigorous trees with thick roots – exactly the kind we don’t want. I’d love to look out of my bedroom window through the upper branches of a tree, at all the birds there. In a garden you want a light airy canopy that the sun can shine through, casting a cool dappled shade. This will also make an environment for woodland plants - there are plenty of gorgeous plants that need shade. It goes without saying that the tree needs to be interesting for as much of the year as possible, with flowers and fruit, newfoliage, autumn colour and bark effects, not to mention the overall form of the tree, with and without leaves. The first thing to avoid in a small garden is anything that simply fills the space with

12

an overwhelming blob of foliage, so I would generally avoid evergreens. Pinus and Eucalyptus can have a light airy canopy but most get big. Some deciduous trees also have a dense canopy – horse chestnuts most obviously. Here are a few suggestions: Acer – Japanese Maples are the obvious ones but most people go for the fine leaved forms, which are shorter, certainly, but also very wide and that means they take up a lot of space. Choose one of the taller varieties – they are the epitome of light, graceful airiness. Wellknown varieties are Senkaki and Katsura, or species like circinatum or coreanum Sorbus – there are many small rowans with fine ferny foliage, spring flowers, autumn leaves and berries. S.cashmeriana, forrestii and koehneana are usually available. Prunus – avoid the common flowering cherries – go for forms of incisa or subhirtella, or cultivars like Pandora or Okame Malus – ornamental crab apples like M.transitoria, sieboldii and toringoides. M. trilobata is one of the very best.

Princess Alice Hospice Shake off the Winter Blues with a Summer Skydive

Shake off those winter blues and plan an exciting summer skydive with Princess Alice Hospice. Tandem sky-dives, where jumpers are safely strapped to a qualified instructor, will be taking place throughout the summer in aid of the Hospice. It is an exhilarating experience and places always go fast. Emily East from the Hospice’s Fundraising Team explained: “It’s a great way to try a first skydive and people often say they want to do it again as soon as their feet have touched the ground! “Some of our fundraisers are fearless thrill seekers, after-all jumping from a plane at 10,000 feet is quite an adrenaline rush! Others simply want to overcome a fear of heights and prove to themselves that they are braver than they thought.

thought about giving skydiving a go, now is the time to get your name down. “You will be raising valuable funds that will help the Hospice to provide vital care and support for its patients and their loved ones.” Registration is free, with the skydivers pledging to raise £395 in sponsorship. The skydives will be taking place on Sunday 12th June, Sunday 7th August and Sunday 18th September. For further information contact the Princess Alice Hospice Fundraising Team on 01372 461808 or email supportercare@pah.org.uk www.pah.org.uk

“They are all united, though, in wanting to raise money for the Hospice. Every jump really does make a difference to us. “These are always very popular fundraising events so if you’ve ever 16

Students to run their own motor racing team

A GROUP of Weybridge students is being given the chance to run its own motor racing team in a pioneering initiative. Rookie driver Jake Hockley has “donated” his 145mph Formula Vee single-seater car to motorsport engineering degree course scholars at Brooklands College. The car, based around Volkswagen parts, will be kept at the college so students can work on it. They will also take it to UK Formula Vee championship meetings and run it for Hockley under the banner Brooklands College Racing.

and run a proper racing car. “The project is different from those of other colleges whose students help existing teams. In this case we ARE the team. And although Jake will still fund it, we feel like the car is as much ours as his. “By maintaining or repairing it at base and then operating it at race meetings, our students will get a fully-rounded idea of what it takes to engineer a racing car. And apart from anything else, it should be a lot of fun.” Father-of-two Hockley, of Walton-onthe-Hill, is also using the project to raise awareness of the plight of five-year-old neighbour Morgan Bishop, who has a life-threatening kidney disease. The car will carry prominent stickers for the boy’s Morgans Mission Facebook page.

Cyber security firm boss Hockley, 38, said: “I’m going racing to scratch a longheld itch. But to be honest I’m really just interested in driving and my mechanical ability is limited, to say the least. “A partnership with the college is a winwin situation for both of us. I can just jump in and drive, which is really all I have time for given my business commitments, and the students get a modern single-seater which they can use to learn and practise their developing skills.” Engineering tutor Richard Green said: “This is a great opportunity for the students, given the college doesn’t really have piles of spare money to actually buy

18

The Brooklands course aims to prepare students for an engineering career in Britain’s multi-billion pound motor racing industry, spearheaded by Formula One. ww Several old boys have also switched to driving, including Tom Chilton, now a race-winning star of the World Touring Car Championship, and Tom Onslow-Cole, the reigning champion of the International 24-Hour series for GT cars.

Relationship Anxiety: How It Affects You and What You Can Do About It by Shaan White

Although maintaining relationships is important, it is also complex, which can give rise to anxieties due to various reasons. When you find yourself over thinking about your relationship with your friends, romantic partner or family, it is generally termed as relationship anxiety. The anxiety can stem from a past or childhood experience that makes you look at everyone in a certain way. Mostly, such people develop suspicion, over sensitivity, and possessive characteristics, all of which prevent healthy relationships. How Does It Affect Relationships Increased worry and fretting over the behavior of others, about whether they like you and other negative thoughts, can cause you to distance yourself from relationships that are in fact, meant to provide you with emotional support. Lynda was an otherwise healthy and stable individual who had a great job working in finance and a spectacular career ahead of her. She was fun to hang out with and cared for the people around her. The one problem that was affecting Lynda’s life was finding a partner due to her anxieties. She had been in past relationships but they hadn’t worked out very well for her. Over time, fear settled in her mind and even when she found someone nice, she found herself excessively over thinking the whole situation, leading to a fall out. How to Deal With Relationship Anxieties Anxieties manifest themselves in many forms and relationship related anxiety could prevent you from developing a meaningful and healthy relationship with anyone. Here are some tips to help curb such fears:

start over thinking things. Try to take people for their word and develop trust in your relationship. This does not mean that you believe everything your partner tells you but if you think something sounds out of place, confront them about it rather than overreacting in a way, which will appear awkward to the other person. Avoid Making Assumptions Don’t assume things and avoid jumping to conclusions. If you are not sure about something, it is always better to ask, rather than becoming anxious, angry, or stressed for something, which you suppose, could be the truth. Look Past Preconceived Notions Try to understand the fact that not everyone is the same. Bad things happen to good people as well and sometimes, the people you meet aren’t meant for you. Meeting someone is a two way street. It might or might not work. With this in mind, don’t let your previous notions about relationships and past experiences reflect in your current actions. Also, avoid internalizing things. If your past relationships didn’t work, it might be because of external factors. Don’t blame yourself for what happened. Rather, reflect, learn and move on. As long as you are open to new relationships and prevent your past experience from affecting your ability to meet new people, you can continue taking positive steps towards curbing your relationship anxiety. Book your session with an expert today and find out more about how you can effectively manage relationship anxieties. Tax Advantages for this Spring by

Kevin Waters With Spring around the corner many of us are turning our minds to the brighter times ahead. With these positive thoughts in mind it’s a good time to remind ourselves of some simple tax advantages before the official tax year end on 5th April. In their generosity HMRC allow us to gift up to £3000 in each tax year. This sum does not attract Inheritance Tax (IHT) so you can give this each year and reduce your overall estate and IHT liabilities.

this increases annually by £25,000 until 2020 where it will reach £175,000. This allowance is only for your main residence and added to your Nil Rate Band of £325,000 gives each person £500,000 in total that can be passed on without attracting IHT. This amount doubles as married couples and civil partnerships can pass this allowance to their partner making a total of £1,000,000 free of IHT for the survivor’s heirs.

If you forgot to take advantage of this in the previous year you can use that allowance for this current year. With a little planning you could gift £3000 for last year, £3000 up until 5th April this year and if you’re feeling flush give another £3000 after the 5th April making a total of £9000 free of IHT! Another tax advantage of which many of you may be aware are the changes to the Nil Rate Band, currently £325,000. This is the amount you can pass onto your heirs without attracting IHT, anything above this attracts 40% inheritance tax, ouch! With seemingly never ending property price increases many estates will have already blasted past this amount.

If you’re thinking of downsizing to a smaller property you will be eligible for an “inheritance tax credit” so that even if you sell a larger property you will still qualify for the new threshold providing the majority of your estate is left to direct descendants. As with all such matters there are conditions attached to these new allowances and you should check the finer details with your own tax advisor or estate planner. Remember, “Don’t put off today what you may not be able to do tomorrow”. Kevin J Waters is principle of EMC Asset Protection t) 020 8979 6709 e) kwaters@emcassetprotection.co.uk

Therefore, to even the playing field a new Family Home Allowance comes into play in April 2017 adding £100,000 to the pot,

Whilst it has not been very well advertised, there are exciting developments with Crossrail 2, the proposed new railway connecting Surrey to central London.

by 2043, experts consider Crossrail 2 to be the only feasible solution to the problem of overcrowding in the long term. Concerns have been raised that Hampton Court and Thames Ditton would lose their direct service to London Waterloo. However, Waterloo is not the final destination for many local passengers. For those who do need to reach Waterloo, the Crossrail 2 plans would only involve a single change, at Surbiton, Wimbledon, or Raynes Park – in the latter case, passengers would simply need to walk across a single platform. Overall journey times to the City and Canary Wharf are predicted to remain at least the same as now (and may well be quicker). Any marginal downsides must be balanced against the overriding benefits from less overcrowding and direct, faster and more frequent access to the whole of central London.

Plans for the preferred route released late last year revealed not only that Crossrail 2 would reach Elmbridge, but that we’re set to be one of the biggest beneficiaries from the scheme. For the first time, Crossrail 2 will provide passengers with a direct rail link to a range of central London destinations such as Victoria, Tottenham Court Road, and Euston, as opposed to just Waterloo and Vauxhall. It will also give passengers the ability to interchange with the Crossrail 1 services to Heathrow, Paddington, the City and Canary Wharf. Crossrail 2 trains will be faster than current rolling stock, cutting around 10 minutes off journey times to central London. Train services will be more frequent - the number of trains from Hampton Court and Thames Ditton to and from London will double to 4 an hour, 7 days a week.

The consultation period on the proposed route closed in early January. Those local considerations which have been fed in are now being digested, with a response expected in the Spring. Crossrail 2 remains in its early stages, and there remains scope for greater local engagement and consultation as the plans take shape in more detail. I have already met with Network Rail’s Head of Crossrail 2, and will continue to press for the very best local links we can achieve.

Crucially, Crossrail 2 will also take trains off the South West mainline, through the construction of additional tracks outside of Elmbridge. This will release enough capacity for 15 extra train services on the South West mainline in the morning peak hours – so overcrowding on all our commuter services would be eased. With 20% additional capacity required just to deal with existing overcrowding on these services, and additional passenger growth of 40 per cent predicted ]

Police 5 (Minutes) New Local Policing Model By Sarah Milligan Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector options for how people can contact us – whether by phone, visiting a police station or reporting online. We want to deal with queries in a more convenient way to those who need us. Demand is changing and we want to focus on where we are needed most. Why not check out our current #Policing Matters campaign which aims to improve public knowledge about what is and what is not something the police should be dealing with - http:// www.surrey.police.uk/News/NewsStories/Full-news-story/Article/12383/ Surrey-Police-launch-phase-two-ofPolicing-Matters-campaign

April 2016 sees the introduction of a new local policing model. Changes to frontline services will see neighbourhood policing teams grow, with more officers aligned to each borough to tackle local problems and support smaller dedicated Safer Neighbourhoods Teams. The new Area Policing Teams will respond to incidents where police are required, investigate crimes, interview suspects, complete court files and attend court. They will deal with a case from start to finish and engage with specialist resources where needed. These teams will be tasked by the Neighbourhood Inspector for the area.

And it’s all change for Elmbridge Neighbourhood Watch as well, as it launches its first ever advertising campaign for new members, which is aptly named ‘Eyes Wanted’. The new website www.elmbridgenhw.ourwatch. org.uk went live on 1 March 2016. Neighbourhood Watch has grown into the largest voluntary crime prevention initiative in the country and is an incredibly effective and important partner in reducing crime and reassuring the community. Joining the team will help you stay in touch with what’s happening in your street, get advice on staying safe and make a difference to your local area. Are you up for the challenge?

If a crime is deemed to be serious, serial or complex it will pass to either the Criminal Investigation Department or the Safeguarding Investigation Unit. The Safer Neighbourhoods Teams will tackle chronic issues that affect local communities, working alongside partner agencies to make communities safer. We aim to ensure that a local presence in our neighbourhoods is retained and enhanced, taking real ownership of the things that truly matter to you. Additionally, we are promoting more

Telephone Surrey Police on 101 and ask to speak to a member of the Safer neighbourhood Team for your area. www.surrey.police.uk 40
