Here comes Summer! As another sunny British Summer comes to pass, we all know what sort of headlines to expect, don’t we? The thermometer hits 20C and we’ll get “ hot enough to cook an egg!

!

"

24 consecutive hours without rain: “ Hosepipe ban to hit UK and “ Fresh fears of drought

Inside this month........

In the unlikely event that we will get enough decent weather to go to the seaside, we have a few ideas on p30 of what to do when you get there. We have a couple of crosswords to while away the lazy, sunny afternoon in the garden (p12) , between barbeque (p 20) and nap time.

What’s On this Summer

And if you’re thinking of making a huge change in your life, never fear! The Anxiety Expert is here (p34) with sound advice to help you along the way. As we settle down to life in post-referendum UK, how many of you will be heading to Europe for your holidays? I’ve heard France is pretty wet this year too, so don’t forget your wellies!

Perfect Plants Low or High Maintenance By Steve Law http://brightonplantsblogspot.co.uk/

Here’s a shocker – you shouldn’t still be watering your plants months after planting. If they’re still wilting, either A. you’ve chosen the wrong plants (for example trying to grow Hostas in dry soil) or B. there’s something wrong with the roots – they’re either sick or have failed to grow out into the surrounding soil. ‘Wrong’ is putting it a bit strongly. Often we want to grow things that need conditions that the garden can’t naturally provide – richer, moister soil, more protection or better drainage perhaps. In these cases, we have to accept that our garden will not be low-maintenance. Often, ‘traditional’ gardening is like this – some think of old-fashioned bedding plants, kitchen gardens, herbaceous borders and lawns, as the simplest and easiest style but these are all high-maintenance. Much of gardening philosophy since the 70s on the other hand has been about ‘Right Plant – Right Place’ i.e. going with the natural conditions the garden has to offer not trying to impose something on it. This calls for a certain understanding of ecology, soil and climate

– which plants need or prefer shade, wet soils, dry soils, shelter, sun etc. For me I like a combination of the two philosophies, but I have to accept that the ‘unnatural’ parts will need to be manageable and near the house so I can keep an eye on them. The rest of the garden should suit the natural conditions so I can leave it to itself most of the time. I only have so much time and energy to spare and I need to prioritise. Once you’ve chosen the right plants, planting is the key to a low maintenance garden. I won’t go into the whole rigmarole but two things seem crucial. The first is making it so that the roots in the pot can make the transition to your garden soil as quickly as possible. One of the reasons I’m unhappy with a lot of pure peat composts is that they are nothing like most garden soil (plus they resist wetting so you can think you’ve watered your plants but have in fact left the roots dry). I use a loamy gritty compost to avoid this but if you buy plants in fibrous peaty mix, loosen the roots or even cut them to get them to spread out in the planting hole. The hole should have a mixture of garden soil and

12

humus like compost in it. If the soil is lumpy, chop and crumble it as much as possible and throw out the big lumps before mixing. The second thing is watering in. If you do this well you are 90% there. Once the plant is well firmed in (so if you tug on it you fear you’ll pull the top off rather than pull it out of the ground) scrape a dish in the top soil around it and then really soak it in. People fear they’ll over-water at this stage but unless the soil is a sodden mass that’s highly unlikely (and presumably you’ve chosen a plant that doesn’t mind sodden soil). This watering is not so much to water the plant as to settle the soil around the roots so you need to really direct that jet into the soil around the root ball, and soak the surrounding soil in the process. Mulch if possible. And that really should be all the watering it’ll need for at least a couple of weeks. Very often, unless the weather is very dry, it shouldn’t need another watering. I’m quite serious. It should be established in 6 weeks at the outside.

Perfect Plants Climbers instead of Hedges By Steve Law http://brightonplantsblogspot.co.uk/

One of the things I am frequently asked for is an evergreen hedge that will screen out the neighbours as soon as possible. My heart sinks. A high dense barrier around a garden can turn a small garden into an exercise yard. Also I know that the prime contenders for the role are among the most oppressive plants you can buy – the dreaded Leyland cypress being top of the list. The third reason for the dread is that these plants don’t magically stop growing when they reach the desired height but require regular cutting. People think they’ll keep it up but sooner or later things get out of hand. Plan B is to choose something a little slower (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana or Thuja for example) but the effect is not very different. Ideally I would choose something lighter, like beech, but it’s slow and people are impatient for their privacy. My favourite hedge was an unintentional combination of beech and box. Box grows well among the roots of the beech and fills in the gaps between their trunks, so there was a very satisfying pattern of dark evergreen and copper in winter. Sarcococca could be substituted for box. I offer a different strategy. If you want a fast growing boundary, why not use climbers? You’ll

obviously need something for the climbers to climb on – I recommend wooden trellis – it doesn’t completely blank off the outside world but once covered, is difficult to see through. But any sort of fence will do as it will be covered pretty quickly. Make sure to install a good solid frame as you don’t want it collapsing under the strain. I personally prefer wood but chain link or wire do nicely and are stronger in the long term. A wooden fence with a trellis top is a classic. The choice of climbers for the job needs a bit of thought. As with the Leylandii, there are some real thugs that will get out of hand very fast and pull down your trellis in a few years. Most of the well-known forms of Clematis montana will be too big too quickly, similar to Lonicera japonica and (heaven forbid) Fallopia baldschuanica – the Russian Vine. Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus) also grow too fast once they get going. As with the hedging plants we need something that gets to a good size quickly, but that can be trimmed over to keep it neat. There aren’t many evergreen climbers hardy in a cool temperate climate and most prefer some shelter. In all but the coldest gardens, the ivies

14

(Hedera species) should not be dismissed – they can be clipped over like any other hedge for a formal effect and there are large and small types with various leaf shapes and variegations. In colder areas forms of Euonymus fortunei can be substituted. Otherwise Lonicera, Clematis, Akebia (and its relatives Holboellia and Stauntonia), Hydrangea (and relatives, Decumaria and Pileostegia) and Trachelospermum all include evergreen kinds with varying degrees of hardiness and vigour. If you don’t need evergreens your options are very varied and one of the good things about climbers is that you can have more than one occupying a space. As long as the roots aren’t too close you can have them growing through each other providing a long season of interest. Ideally, plant something moderately vigorous, say, Parthenocissus henryana, as a base then let Clematis, jasmine or honeysuckle grow through it. Remember that different Clematis need different pruning regimes so best not to plant, say, C.alpina with C.viticella because trimming one will cut the buds off the other. Preferably, trim your climber hedge immediately after flowering.

Isabel Webster lends her voice to New Build Appeall

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices are proud to announce that Sky News Presenter Isabel Webster is to take the role of New Build Appeal Patron, and will lend her support to the Hospices over the coming months as they build for the future to ensure 21st century care across Surrey for generations to come. Best known for co-hosting Sunrise on Sky News, alongside Eamonn Holmes, Isabel has a personal connection with Woking Hospice as her mother was the original architect for the current building in Hill View Road, when it opened 20 years ago. Isabel recently visited the hospice to announce her official support of the New Build Appeal, and took a walk down memory lane as she visited patients and staff on the ward and in Day Care. She explains: “I remember walking around the building with enormous pride as a school girl. Having witnessed its’ creation, I am now thrilled to be looking to the future and lending my voice to the new hospice.” Jayne Cooper Director of Nursing and Becky Lewis Therapies Team Lead, spent time explaining hospice care and how this will be improved when the new

facilities open. Isabel then spent time talking to attendees, including Charlie, who has Motor Neurone Disease and explained how visits to the hospice for bathing, lunch and socialising had improved his wellbeing. She then visited the new hospice build site in Denton Way, Woking where Site Manager Robbie Richards took her on a tour of key areas under construction such as the Wellbeing Centre, the Café area and Therapy rooms. The building is growing ever taller and remains on schedule to be completed at the end of the year. She continues, “It’s fantastic to see for myself the progress being made on site; it’s coming along brilliantly and feels like an enormous building. It’s crucial that funds keep coming in to enable the new Woking & Sam Beare Hospices to continue their brilliant work.” The Hospice launched a £3.4million New Build Appeal in February 2016 to raise the money needed to complete the project. So far nearly £1million has been pledged and Fundraising activities are continuing. For ways to get involved and to donate visit: www.wsbhospices. co.uk/NewBuild. 16

ST R N NO YLE AN EW W S & GE AV C OF AI OL LA OU BL RS E

For a beautiful new kitchen...

just change the doors

Brooklands Museum’s Concorde Dips Her Nose to Celebrate 10th Anniversary of Opening to the Public On 26th July the Brooklands Concorde G-BBDG will droop her trademark nose for the first time in almost 35 years as Brooklands Museum marks the completion of 10 years since she officially opened to the public as an exhibition, event venue and virtual flight experience. The lowering of the nose, using Concorde’s own flight-deck controls, will be controlled by TV Presenter and international model Jodie Kidd as the highlight of an all-day celebratory event. Concorde G-BBDG’s ‘droop nose’ hasn’t been lowered since her flying days ended on the 24th December 1981. The landmark achievement of restoring the functionality of the droop nose and visor mechanisms was made possible by the commendable efforts of a dedicated volunteer team who have been working for over a year on the project. Jodie Kidd, who will be on the flight deck to formally lower the nose for the first time on 26th July, regularly flew on the supersonic aircraft to and from America and was on the final revenue flight of Concorde from New York to London on 24th October 2003. The event will be celebrated with a Champagne Reception around the aircraft, and in attendance will be members of the volunteer teams who have

supported Concorde G-BBDG in her initial restoration, maintenance and preservation, and also the 60-strong volunteer team who run the Brooklands Concorde Experience tours, which operate daily - often every 15 minutes in the high seasons. Also in attendance will be several former Concorde Pilots and Engineers, including Chief Concorde Pilot, Mike Bannister. After the lowering of the nose, a three course lunch will be served to the 220 guests in the Museum’s prestigious Napier Room inside the Clubhouse. After lunch and guest speeches, there will be a raffle draw which features some very special Concorde prizes including the chance to lower the nose and a framed turbine blade, signed by nearly 40 Concorde Pilots. Allan Winn, Director and CEO of Brooklands Museum said: “The restoration of Delta Golf was a remarkable project: it highlighted the very best of aspects of the hugely successful partnership between Volunteers and professionals which characterises Brooklands Museum. The launching 10 years ago of the unique onboard experience on the only Concorde open to the public in the South-East had an immediate and lasting impact on

28

the Museum’s visitor numbers and revenues, and paved the way for further developments. The most notable of those is, of course, the restoration of the world’s only operation Concorde simulator and the amazing At the Controls of Concorde programme which it now supports.” Jenny Tye, Concorde Operations Manager at Brooklands said: ‘We are very excited to be able to celebrate this special anniversary with so many of the people that have been involved over the last ten years. The event is a way to thank those who have given their time and dedication to the aircraft, and made it what it is today for generations to come. Without the volunteer team, we would not have been able to show the hundreds of thousands of people who have visited what it was like to fly on this iconic engineering marvel.’ For more information about the event, visit www. brooklandsconcorde.co.uk, or contact the Concorde Operations team on 01932 857 381 with extension 237, or alternatively by emailing flyconcorde@ brooklandsmuseum.com.

We all go through the phase of ‘not enjoying our work’ at some point in career. Whether right after landing your first job or 20 years into a career, you may realize that you should be making moves to get to the place you’d rather be. At the same time, quitting a job, especially a secure and well-paid one, is not always a viable option for everyone. If you are unhappy with your current job, here are some techniques that may help you cope with a less-than-ideal job.

make your work less exasperating.

Reset your perspective about your job and career. Remember that even if you don’t like your current job, it’s not a waste. Think about the possibilities that your current job offers to capitalize on them for future growth and development. Also, consider how your current experience can be leveraged for future opportunities. Additionally, readjust your short and long term professional goals to plan and make the right career move at the right time.

Give suggestions and ideas to bring about changes to the working environment. Most dynamic organizations embrace the value of individual differences, and thus respond positively to ideas that could improve work culture. That being said, not all organizations or workplaces are flexible enough to permit changes. If your workplace is intolerant of changes, the quickest fix to your frustration is to accept it. Consider ways to tolerate your workplace conditions within whatever limits are imposed on you. Try some motivational techniques to

34

Remember that it is not just about workplace, but your attitude towards it. Therefore, make an effort to change your attitude towards things that can’t be changed to make your work enjoyable and less stressful.

Small, strategic changes to create a balance between your personal and professional life can make a big difference. Sometimes, it is not the work that frustrates you, but the fact that it’s consuming your life. In such a case, it’s a good idea to make certain changes rather than finding a new job and ending up in the same situation all over again.

Hypnotherapy is a great way to explore your innermost capabilities for making long term improvements. By obliterating negative thoughts and behavior, the technique can help you boost positive energy, thus increasing motivation to create changes in your personal and professional life. If you are experiencing job-related anxiety, contact us to get expert consultation for all your psychological and behavioral problems.

Amidst the contentious debate on the EU referendum, the Queen’s Speech in May provided a timely reminder that the important work of government goes on. The speech traditionally sets out the government’s law-making priorities for the year ahead. Of particular importance for Elmbridge will be the introduction of a new National Funding Formula for schools. This will correct the unfairness that has built up in school funding in school funding over the years, under which schools get very different amounts of funding depending on which local authority they find themselves in. For example, schools in some local authority areas receive up to £15,000 more per class each year than schools in other parts of the country, despite having pupils with the same characteristics and needs. This is enough to provide an extra 4 teachers or 10 teaching assistants across a whole school. Surrey has historically received some of the lowest school funding per pupil in the country, putting our schools at a disadvantage despite pockets of real need. The government has already invested £390 million a year to address the problem, which gave Surrey’s schools budget an extra £28 million a year. But, the new funding formula promises to tackle the issue once and for all, by moving to a system in which pupils with the same needs or characteristics would attract the same amount of funding to their school no matter where they are in

the country. This will be fairer, more efficient and more transparent than the current system, under which some schools receive more money than others simply on the basis of historic differences in local authority spending. Our local businesses will also benefit from the proposal to put into law local councils’ ability to retain 100% of local taxes and to strengthen their powers to cut business rates for local firms. Business will also be boosted by a bill to give the independent National Infrastructure Commission a statutory basis. The Commission will provide the government with expert, independent advice on the infrastructure that is needed to ensure the UK economy is fit for the future, with the government committed to investing over £100 billion in infrastructure by 2020. More broadly, the Queen’s Speech set out proposals to give every household a legal right to have a fast broadband connection installed, and a new scheme to boost the savings of the lower paid. Measures will also be brought forward to help consumers save more money on their household bills. Many households could save up to £390 a year by switching just three providers, and a new law will speed up the process of “switching” between suppliers, and give consumer more protection when things go wrong. These reforms will help working families across the borough.

Police 5 (Minutes) Summertime views By Sarah Milligan Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector With the advent of summer upon us, there is always the temptation to enjoy the warmer weather and have a drink, whether at a barbecue with friends, enjoying the UEFA football or sampling the culinary delights of your local. Whilst we like to encourage people to enjoy themselves, we also want them to act responsibly. June sees the summer crackdown on drink and drug driving, which targets offending motorists in a bid to prevent collisions, serious injury and fatalities on the county’s roads.

Last month Sandown Park hosted a moving and impactive conference aiming to signpost those trapped in controlling and coercive relationships to the vital help and support they need. The event also saw the launch of a six week focus on helping people in emotionally abusive relationships and featured touching stories from a survivor of domestic abuse, a family whose daughter was murdered by her ex-partner and a hardhitting performance by the AlterEgo drama group about a charismatic young woman and the distressing reality of her psychologically abusive relationship with her partner.

Officers will be out on patrol actively looking for driving offences and poor behaviour behind the wheel, identifying motorists who break the law by being under the influence, and risking not only their own lives, but those of other road users.

The audience, from a variety of businesses, charities, local authorities and housing providers, learned about the effect of living under the shadow of emotional abuse and control can have on people, with their every movement watched and criticised, getting isolated from their families and friends and having a sense of fear and intimidation hanging over their daily lives. It was a truly heartrending, yet inspiring day, encouraging everyone to recognise the signs of coercive control and have the courage to come forward.

People caught drink or drug driving are most likely to lose their licence which could affect their jobs, increase their insurance premiums, or in the worst case, mean they go to prison. It’s a fine line between being under or over the limit – don’t take the risk! Book a cab, have a designated driver, use public transport. Don’t be tempted – either drink OR drive – not both. It’s not worth it!

Telephone Surrey Police on 101 and ask to speak to a member of the Safer neighbourhood Team for your area. www.surrey.police.uk 40
