Jack’s Kitchen Opens with a Bang
Although the weather was not to the best of British standards with the sun playing hide and seek, out came refreshing and luscious lemon Sorbet served on a bed of crushed ice in a frosted wine glass, nicely enveloped in a rather large scooped lemon shell, which still had its lid on. Suddenly the diners were mesmerised with the beautiful aroma of cocoa, carefully assembled in the form of Venison served with fresh figs, baby turnips, molecular flowers and chocolate Sauce. The dish was carefully thought to marry the flavours together and here came a balanced fruity chocolate wine.
Giggs Hill Green, Thames Ditton Friday the 22nd of April, saw Jack’s Kitchen open its doors for the first time with a hugely successful, glitzy lunch time launch party. The turnout was to its full capacity with almost 100 revellers, movers and shakers from the local area attending the event. Expectations were exceeded as soon as one entered the restaurant with champagne and scrumptious canapés in full swing. One could witness the opulence of the restaurant looking at the display itself, Lobsters and crabs were sitting on ice next to fresh greens in a basket, as if the spectacle of Borough Market had dawned upon Jack’s Kitchen. Live music was being played by young artists supported by local charity – Creative Youth.
Jack’s Kitchen has partnered with Creative Youth charity, where a special dessert has been created called Jack’s Creative Mess, it surely was creative bringing some mini explosions in the mouth in literal sense when popping candy started to do what it was meant to. This dessert is truly unique and worth ordering at Jack’s Kitchen, as the Management has decided to donate £1 off the dish, each time it sells, which would generate awareness of the great work Creative Youth does in order to get the dreams of local youth artists accomplished.
Mr. Dominic Raab, the local MP and Mrs. Shweta Kapadia, local councillor were the guests of honour. Mr. Raab, cut the neatly wrapped Red Ribbon open followed by traditional lighting of the lantern, which marked the opening of Jack’s Kitchen with a gracious and ambitious Five Course menu. Nibbles included Truffled Aranccini with carefully marinated olives, roasted nuts & Spanish Padron Peppers. Whilst enjoying the nibbles with New World fruity white wine came the humble sour dough bread with French salted butter, which ignited the hunger only to appreciate the starters – Peppered Wild Tiger Prawns with Celeriac and Apple Slaw and Passion fruit dressing.

Perfect Plants Flowering Plants versus Foliage Plants By Steve Law http://brightonplantsblogspot.co.uk/
One thing that makes the difference between a merely nice garden and a genuinely special garden is the quality of the foliage. I think the message about growing plants specifically for foliage has got through, but they’re not really what I want to talk about. As with a garden full of as many flowers as possible, a garden with nothing but bold foliage can be over-stimulating. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that often, what we want is less thrilling - a more peaceful temperate green space. Sadly, what we often get is a monotonous green lump. Flowers help but can look bland – random colours on a plain green background. Maybe we tend to think too much in terms of categories - Flowering Plants versus Foliage Plants. If the plant has flowers, we don’t worry too much about the foliage and vice-versa, and a lot of popular flowering plants have very boring foliage. I’m thinking of daisy family especially, but also some of the big spring flowering shrubs like Forsythia and Philadelphus. But the keen plants-person will be aware that often there is a similar plant with much nicer leaves and a better overall effect.
What makes them better? Shape, colour and texture are obvious factors. Philadelphus is a good example. The common species is P.coronarius – the traditional Mock Orange. It’s an immense shrub – fabulous scent for about a week but then a scruffy green mass until autumn when it becomes a huge bundle of sticks. For a long time I wouldn’t even consider planting a Philadelphus until I saw P.delavayi. It’s still a big shrub, and also doesn’t flower for long but its leaves are more solid and have a better texture. There are many smaller Philadelphus, better for a small garden, but if you want a big one, don’t choose P.coronarius. Many people complain that Peonies flower briefly then take up too much room for the rest of the summer. However, I’ve always loved peonies and that is partly because the ones I’m thinking of have among the best foliage of any border perennial – broadly lobed and cut, in various shades of green, with red tints and veins. The young shoots are usually a good rich red and the leaves may colour up well in the autumn. So these are the features to look out for – new growth

and autumn colour. There are plants grown almost entirely for these features, but there are plenty more that, although not show-stoppers, are still worth looking at. Many plants have red, purple or dark tinted new leaves, or very fresh pale green ones. Sometimes the veins or the stalk is picked out in red, yellow or even black. It doesn’t sound like much but it makes all the difference. Later, while some plants become tatty and wan with age, others keep their shape and take on tints of buff or maroon. Finally, it is important to consider how well a plant bows out once it has done its bit. Many fabulous plants only flower briefly in the spring but then sit there for the rest of the summer. Do they take up space like a big green blot, or do they slip demurely into the scenery? Big evergreens are an obvious concern, and the old hybrid Rhododendrons more than most, but there are those with a lighter shape and attractively textured and coloured foliage. Most produce their new shoots after flowering and these can be very ornamental. Trees and shrubs with a light, open structure and fresh green leaves make a lush backdrop for vivid summer flowers.

This week I received a message from Alex, who has stopped answering his home phone. He is receiving endless cold calls and has simply had enough of trying to get rid of the pesky salespeople trying to sell their services – from PPI claims to the installation of solar panels and how much they can save. It is very frustrating when you cannot answer you own phone without the fear of being bombarded about unwanted goods and services! What should Alex do? Unwanted Phone calls What would you do if you were faced with the same situation? It is simply not acceptable that you have to avoid answering your own phone. The first thing you should do is contact the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), run by the Direct Marketing Association. The service is free and allows you to opt out of receiving marketing communications and includes preventing marketing calls from business development firms, charities, voluntary organisations and political parties. You can register your home and mobile numbers with the scheme. According to Ofcom research, your unwanted phone calls will reduce by one third. Once you are registered, organisations are not allowed to call you unless you have given prior consent. 45% of those registered on the list receive no more cold-calls. Prior Consent When you sign up with new websites there are often 2 tick boxes, one for their terms and conditions and the other to receive communications from select partners. Do not tick this box, ever! If you do, you are consenting that data can be sold legitimately to third party companies and this is considered prior consent.
Even though you may have opted out via the Telephone Preference Service you will still receive communications from companies that have your data via this process. This loophole is extremely unfair and the Government is now considering if this law should be changed. Personally, I find it unbelievable that this law still exists and it certainly needs to be amended as Alex’s case demonstrates! Silent phone calls If you are receiving silent calls this is usually from an automated system in a Contact Centre. The system automatically dials phone numbers and if you answer, you are then connected to a member of staff in the Contact Centre. However, if no one in the Contact Centre is available then you receive the silent call. If the company is using this system, they must publish their phone number. Once you get off of the call, ring 1471 to find out the number or call your phone provider and request the caller’s phone number and then make a complaint. Automated sales calls These are known as lead generation calls, looking to capture your details or leads to sell onto a firm. Companies making these calls must have your permission to make these calls to you. If you have not given permission, then you should contact the Information Commissioner’s Office with as much information as possible. Call them on 0303 123 1113. Making a complaint If you are still receiving unwanted phone calls, then you should make a complaint to the Telephone Preference Service.

LEWIS Energy All of the big six energy providers – British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE – have now announced price cuts to their standard tariffs, most to hit over the next month; but these are piddly, paltry, tiny, irrelevant and, ultimately, ignorable. Even after these cuts of roughly £30 a year, without any question you are BEING RIPPED OFF – typically by over £300 a year. If you’re detecting a sense of frustration in my writing, you are correct. I’ve been banging on about this for over a decade, yet still 70% of the UK population are on these damn awful tariffs. So before I get into the “whats” and “hows”, let me prove why you need to listen. In recent weeks my Twitter and email inbox have been swamped with people shocked at their savings and wishing they’d done it before. Here’s just two: Sarah: “Switched gas and electric. Saving of £1,117 per year, should have done it years ago.” Jo: “@MartinSLewis - just switched & saved £813 on my gas & electric?!? Un-flippin’ believable!! Thank you for banging on about it!” 1) It’s quick and easy to switch Slashing the amount you pay for energy really isn’t difficult. It takes minutes to find your cheapest, then it’s switched over in 17 days. I got four newish members of my team to do a comparison and on average it took 5 minutes 52 seconds. Those who worry about switching, don’t – it’s the same pipes, gas, meter and safety – the only thing that changes is the price and customer service.
2) Use a comparison site but do it the right way As your saving and your cheapest depends on where you live and what you use, there’s no one winner. Plug your details into a comparison site and it’ll show your best deal. To do this, you need your address, your current tariff and your usage. The best usage to put in is your Kilowatt hours, if not that, then your annual cost, if not then monthly cost. If you don’t have any info – just guess! While you may not get the perfect result, if you’re on a standard tariff you’ll save substantially. To do a comparison you can use my www. CheapEnergyClub.com or, alternatively, you can use any www.ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison site, but, if so, do watch for two things. Ensure it searches all tariffs Some comparison sites by default will only show you the tariffs that they get paid for. This filters out some of the cheapest deals. Make sure when you’re doing a comparison you’ve selected the option to see all the results, that way you’ll get to see the best deals. Beware personal projections if you’re on a fixed tariff When doing a comparison, most comparison sites follow the regulators’ guidance and show your ‘personal projection’, which is effectively your average energy cost over the next year. Comparethemarket.com and energyhelpline. com have options to see both as well. - Check customer service feedback too. It’s not all about pure price, service counts. It may be worth paying a little more for one with a good service record; Ovo is relatively cheap for many people with a good track record. Most comparison sites include some service listings.

Oxshott Royals Youth Football Club enjoyed another very well attended Annual Presentation Evening on Friday 13 May. With the weather firmly on their side, over 1200 parents and children, from Cobham, Oxshott and surrounding districts, filled the marquee to see award winners from each of the Club’s 42 teams receive their trophies and listen to the Team Managers recount their tales of triumph over the course of their season.

In addition, a variety of games, including a mini-tournament for the Club’s 40 U5 and U6 year old players, human table-football, BBQ, pizza and seemingly limitless refreshments kept everyone amused, with the evening finally concluding around 11.00pm. Oxshott Royals are one of the largest grassroots football clubs in the county, with over 600 boys and girls U18 playing in 42 teams. As the EU referendum campaign gets into full swing, I have been addressing the crucial question of whether the UK is safer in or out of the European Union. For all its bulk, being a member of the European Union actually does little to keep Britain secure that we could not achieve if we left. Of course, we must co-operate with our continental partners, as we do with countries like the USA and Australia. But, from policing to data-sharing, Britain doesn’t need to be a member of the EU to co-operate with it. On the other hand, the EU does one thing which definitely makes us less safe, by weakening the UK’s ability to control our borders. For example, the government has the power to stop people such as convicted criminals and hate preachers from outside Europe entering Britain. But EU rules set a far higher bar on our ability to stop EU nationals entering Britain - and it is the European Court in Luxembourg — not British border authorities or elected MPs — who have the final say. As a result, while UK authorities have barred 202,000 people from outside Europe since 2006 alone, the UK has denied entry to just 11,000 of the 253 million EU nationals arriving at our borders during the same period, eighteen times fewer than the number of nonEuropeans turned away. In practice, this means we can’t bar entry to someone from Europe with serious past
criminal convictions, or who is the subject of unconfirmed warnings of links to terrorists. This undermines our ability to take the preventative measures necessary to protect the public. As Peter Higgins, the former head of immigration at UK ports, said recently, border controls for EU citizens are “pretty minimal. The Border Force glance at your passport and wave you on.” The European Union undermines UK security in other ways too. The European Court meddles with our laws and makes it harder to deport those who commit crimes once they’re here in Britain, including convicted murderers. The former head of Mi6, Sir Richard Dearlove, has said that EU bodies can’t be trusted with intelligence, saying they leak information like “colanders”. The British people have a choice. We can follow the EU towards its dream of a single EU legal code, enforced by EU police, prosecutors and a European intelligence agency under the supervision of an EU justice minister and the Luxembourg Court — none accountable to you. That path would be bad for our security and our democracy. Instead, by leaving the EU, we can take back control over our borders, keep the operational law-enforcement co-operation that counts and retain democratic control over our police and justice system.

Police 5 (Minutes) Policing in Your Neighbourhood cont.. By Sarah Milligan Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector The annual Elmbridge Young Persons Awards is taking place at Imber Court in June this year. This fantastic evening was set up four years ago to recognise and celebrate those young people under the ages of 18 who have demonstrated positive and inspiring behaviour over the previous twelve months. The nominations can be made by teachers, youth group leaders, charities, community groups and members of the public, if they feel that their nominee is a deserving winner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too late to put forward your recommendations. Some of the previous winners have been young carers; others have demonstrated great bravery by saving persons from drowning; others are fighting illness or disability and some have shown a dramatic improvement in their behaviour and outlook to turn their lives around. In this day and age, it is easy to portray young people in a negative light and focus on the poor behaviour of the minority, so this is a great opportunity to applaud the exceptional young people we have living in the borough. It has been one month since the launch of the Policing In Your Neighbourhoods model was introduced by Surrey police and it has been largely successful. As expected, there have been a few teething problems, but we are looking at what is working well and what needs attention. Generally, the new model has been well received and there has been a positive approach from all staff and officers to the new way of working and an enthusiastic uptake of the new challenges. Likewise, the approach to demand reduction focussing on threat, harm and risk and delivering core policing activities means that the Area Policing Teams are dealing with around 1,000 fewer cases than their equivalent teams were a year ago. This has enabled them to concentrate on targeting criminality within our communities, bringing offenders to justice and tackling the issues that cause the greatest concern for our residents and businesses. It means that we have seen the number of officers working out of the police office in Esher increase, as with their visibility on the streets and we will continue to strive to provide the best policing service to the people of Elmbridge.
