Something in the air Anyone else picked up this awful a flu bug that’s doing the rounds? We’ve all been be struck down with it this month, which means the hot lemon mean drinks (liberally laced drin with brandy by some nameless individual na in our house) have been swigged, swigged Kleenex shares have soared and not much else has gotten done. And all this in spite of having the jab last Autumn. But now Spring is really in the air. The Inside this month........ clocks have leapt forward, Easter has been and gone and we are fervently hoping that climate What’s On in March change will hold off until we’ve had a decent Perfect Plants summer, for once.

And so thoughts are turning to summer holidays. Not so much where as ‘if’’. Last year all bets were off due to severe health issues. Do we dare to book something this year? One thing we have done is taken out travel insurance, just in case we have a repeat performance of last year and then hopefully we won’t lose, lose and lose again. Where shall we head? Scotland? Brittany? The Black Forest? Choosing and planning is more than half the fun! Any recommendations for two oldies in a caravan?

Perfect Plants Perennially Beautiful By Rose Henfrey

Gardens usually include a variety of plant types. Trees and shrubs provide structure and permanency. Annuals germinate, grow and flower in just one season, giving a splash of vibrant colour, albeit rather short lived. Biennials take two years to complete their lifecycle. Roots, leaves and stems develop throughout the first year, and then the plant enters a dormant state over the winter before producing flowers then dying in the second year. Perennials, however, are a fabulous set of plants that provide an amazing show year after year. By definition, herbaceous perennials are plants that last for more than two years; die back in the autumn and then shoot again from their own rootstock each year thereafter. Because each individual plant increases in size, over time they provide a stunning and mature display. It’s worth doing a little research into the ultimate spread, height, flowering months and preferred growing conditions for the many species available, so you can create a balanced and attractive display. Also, perennials are sub-divided into hardy and half-hardy species.

Half-hardy perennials include fuchsias and pelargoniums which need a frost-free place to live in the winter, whereas hardy perennials can be expected survive most winters.

between them to develop, but not so much that you end up with gaps. The ideal placement will be that when all the plants are fully grown, they will just be touching.

Most perennials can be planted at any time of year and are generally available all year round. Plants for sale in the summer months will naturally be larger and often already in flower so you can see what you are buying. These will also provide instant impact and colour to your garden.

Perennials need a little maintenance but it’s all easy: keep them well watered during the first year so they develop strong roots. Taller varieties may need extra support by tying to canes, and all will require regular dead-heading in order to promote new flower growth. In the winter, most perennials die back, although some do retain their leaves. Remove any dead leaves in the spring before the new growth starts. Another benefit of perennials is that you can split them when they get too big and replant them somewhere else, so increasing your stock. In early spring, dig up the entire clump, divide it and replant the new plants wherever you like.

When choosing any new plants from the garden centre or nursery, always make sure they are in good condition with healthy green leaves and a solid crown with new shoots. Maximum impact is created when clusters of the same plants are positioned together to provide swathes of colour. It’s normal to buy in groups of three or five. As with any new planting, it’s important to prepare the soil first so your new plant gets the best possible start to its new life. If you have done your research, you will know how large your new plants will eventually grow, so make sure you leave enough space

8

These must-have plants add depth, diversity and colour to your garden, quickly, effortlessly and all without breaking the bank. And you don’t need to keep buying new plants year after year.

Light up the Night for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices

There was lots of excitement and laughter, flashing bunny ears and vibrant outfits at Lightwater Country Park, as a group of local ladies launched Woking & Sam Beare Hospices’ 2016 Midnight Walk, with a new Brazilian Carnival theme. With the 2016 Olympics taking place in Rio this summer, this year’s Midnight Walk theme will be a great way to get into the carnival spirit. Before the walk begins there will be a fantastic party atmosphere with music and entertainment, culminating in a big group warm up and there will of course be the famous flashing bunny ears, glow in the dark accessories, face painting and plenty of selfie opportunities.

Losing two beautiful, brave friends is incredibly painful but raising money to help others in their hours of need makes the pain a little more tolerable. Chris and Simone’s teenage daughters will also join our team ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ which was one of our favourite songs and reminds us of the happy care-free days with two wonderful people.” The ladies only event taking place on Friday 20th May 2016 at Mercedes-Benz World is open to all girls and women aged 11+ and this year’s walk comes with not only an exciting new theme but a new route which will take walkers through Brooklands, Byfleet and Addlestone before going through Weybridge and back to Mercedes-Benz World. Entrants will receive a bright pink Midnight Walk t-shirt in their registration pack and a medal at the finish line to mark their achievement.

Helen Du Toit, one of the ladies who helped launch the Midnight Walk and will be signing up as part of team ‘Young Hearts Run Free’ will walk in memory of her two best friends - Chris Loughton and Simone Pearman. Both were sadly diagnosed with bowel cancer within 3 months of each other and recently passed away in the care of the Hospices. Helen said “You only get one chance at end of life care - the Hospices helped make an unbearable situation a little more tolerable for Chris and Simone. Chris passed away in February this year and spent the last 18 days of her life in the care of the Hospices. The support and kindness from all the staff and volunteers was overwhelming, they treated her with dignity and compassion and made her feel safe and comfortable.” She added “Simone and her family were supported by the community nurses from the Hospices in the comfort of her own home. Their practical and emotional support was invaluable to the whole family just when it was needed most.

14

Events Fundraising Manager, Danielle Le Cuirot said “It’s a truly magical evening with many walking in memory of friends and loved ones and others just wanting to take on a challenge, have some fun and support our Hospices. Last year over 800 women walked, talked, and ‘flashed’ their illuminated bunny ears around the 8 mile route. The money raised from the event helps to provide specialist end of life care for free to local people and we hope to have even more support this year. It’s an experience not to be missed and for a limited time only, if you register online you can get the early bird entry of just £10!” Register online now at www.wsb-midnightwalk. co.uk or call the Fundraising Team on 01483 881752.

An opportunity to get an advanced degree, travel overseas or publish some written work could arrive in early April. Your charisma will be at an all time high, making it easy to attract romance. A jealous authority figure may try to block your path to success. Resist the temptation to get drawn into a power struggle on the 7th, when the New Moon ignites your rebellious side. You'll be able to strike out on your own towards mid-month. Launching your own business or taking a freelance assignment is a strong possibility. Don't hesitate to negotiate a higher salary than you are offered. Your ability to wheel and deal will be very strong during the second half of the month. Resist the urge to overindulge or you could become tired and listless. It's important to look your best at work. The Full Moon on the 22nd marks an exciting turning point in an intimate relationship. An intense relationship will make you excited about the future. You may decide to make a serious commitment in the early days of April. Keep this union a secret for the first half of the month. This will allow you and your amour to get used to the new arrangement. The New Moon on the 7th could cause some pangs of anxiety. It will be harder than you expect to relinquish your independence. Going on a solitary holiday may ease your fears. Don't be afraid to have a heart to heart talk about finances with your partner in April. You may decide to have three bank accounts: Yours, Mine and Ours. On the 22nd, the Full Moon will help you and your partner form a united front. If you're single, you could meet your soulmate in a club, a nightclub, an environmental group or even an antique shop. Splash out on some new clothes or a makeover as May approaches. Ç

Your best friend, romantic partner or a colleague will be extremely supportive. Accept their help while pursuing a cherished dream. You could reach heights you never dreamed possible in early April. Jealous friends could fall by the wayside near the 7th, when the New Moon puts strain on weak relationships. You're about to learn an important lesson about loyalty. During the second half of the year, you could receive an inheritance, tax refund or legal settlement that will put you in a more secure financial footing. Take this opportunity to launch your own business or change careers. Pursuing work in a creative field will be exciting, but you'll have to be frugal in the early stages. Don't hesitate to accept an entry level position around the 22nd, when the Full Moon will send some intriguing work your way. You might be serving as an assistant to an important artist, producer or gallery owner. Î

You can make good progress on the fitness front in the opening days of the month. Take this opportunity to launch an exercise regime. Eating well and sleeping more are also strongly advised. The New Moon on the 7th will tempt you to accept a job offer, but beware. It may be advisable to wait for a better situation. You don't want to work for an oppressive tyrant. Launching your own business is definitely worth considering in April. A relative or neighbour who believes in you might be prepared to offer you some start up capital. A creative project will come to fruition on the 22nd, courtesy of the Full Moon. This impressive performance will pave the way for more lucrative opportunities. Getting paid for your artwork will be the answer to a prayer. You might decide to get involved with an artists' collective as a means to showcase your work. As May approaches, there will be power in numbers. Ð

You'll have a chance to do some business related to the arts in early April. If you're looking for work, you could land a steady job in a creative field. Serving as an apprentice or an assistant to a prominent figure in the painting, publishing or design world is a distinct possibility. You might have to ask for additional training near the 9th, when the New Moon reveals some gaps in your knowledge. Don't be afraid to admit your lack of experience; it's the fastest way to acquire marketable skills. Adopting a humble attitude isn't easy for you, but it is very likely to lead to career success in April. The Full Moon on the 22nd will mark an improvement to your home life. You could move to a nicer place or add a relative or roommate to your household. This base of operations will make 16 it easier to improve your job prospects during the closing days of the month.

It's better to conserve your resources. The New Moon on the 7th will require you to pay a big bill or satisfy an old debt. The longer you put off this obligation, the more expensive it will become. A temporary job assignment could become available at a religious, cultural or educational organisation at mid-April. You might have to postpone a home improvement project until you build up your savings. Good news about a loved one's job will arrive on the 22nd. Go out and celebrate this marvellous turn of events. Try not to be resentful of their success. Their progress is the result of a team effort. Taking pleasure in their happiness will make you more attractive to positive energy. ê

Traveling on business could put you on the path to love in early April. If you already have a romantic partner, this would be a good time to sign a long term contract with a vendor or investor. Turn a deaf ear to a manipulative relative who is always criticising your best friend. On the 7th, the New Moon will force you to make a choice between friends and family. Take this opportunity to draw healthier boundaries with your kin. Don't allow them to dictate the terms of your romantic and social lives. An intense flirtation will fill you with excitement during the second half of the month. It's fun to banter with someone who is as witty and intelligent as you. The Full Moon on the 22nd will draw some extra money into your bank account. Take this opportunity to splash out on clothes, jewellery and toiletries. Luxury products are as essential as food and water to you. â

A steady job with plenty of growth opportunity will arrive in early April. Be sure to accept this offer, even if it means starting at the bottom of an impressive organisation. You'll quickly rise up the ladder to success. Resist the urge to get into a war of words with a pushy colleague on the 7th. That's when the New Moon will implore you to establish yourself as a team player. Your love life will show signs excitement during the second half of the month. This is a great time to embark on a romance, plan to get engaged or think about exchanging wedding vows. The Full Moon on the 22nd invites you to spoil yourself. Splash out on some luxuries and give yourself a treat or two. Propose an idea for a new product or service as May approaches. Originality will set you apart from the crowd. Buy your best friend or romantic partner a beautiful token of your appreciation. â

The opportunity to travel for business will arrive in the opening days of April. This is a great time to sign some new business or extend an existing contract. If you're unfamiliar with certain customs, ask to be enlightened. It's better to admit your ignorance than pretend to possess expert knowledge on the 7th. That's when the New Moon invites you to adopt a humble attitude for the sake of acquiring new information. Your health will undergo a dramatic improvement in the second half of April, thanks to a new fitness regime. Resist the urge to adopt a rigorous exercise routine. Slow and steady wins the race. On the 22nd, the Full Moon will prompt you to get some rest and relaxation. Even a social butterfly like you needs to recharge your batteries from time to time. Finding a steady job is a strong possibility in the closing days of April. î

Home life will be very satisfying in the opening days of April. This is a great time to scale back your social life for the sake of some down time. The New Moon on the 7th warns against making radical changes to your surroundings. It's better to maintain the status quo right now. Around the middle of April you'll have a chance to study or travel. Expanding your horizons could put you on the path to love. If you're already in a relationship, take a relaxing holiday with your amour. Resist the urge to push a relative into making a hasty decision during the second half of the month. A strategic retreat will yield better results with this family member. On the 22nd, you should attend a party. Your magnetism will turn heads and attract admirers. Prepare to make some powerful friends. You will find someone with a foreign accent particularly charming. The two of you will make a great team. Ù

You'll meet some influential people in the opening days of the month. This would be a great time to attend parties and professional conferences. Try to listen more than you speak at these gatherings. The New Moon on the 7th warns against blurting out embarrassing remarks. You should also double check the address field on emails before clicking the 'send' button. The middle of April brings you a chance to improve your living situation. This will be a great time to move to a nicer place, buy a piece of land or make some home improvements. An exciting career opportunity will arrive on the 22nd. Working for a focused executive will be a welcome change of pace. You're tired of taking orders from disorganised people who lack vision. You'll have a chance to buy some beautiful furniture and artwork as April turns to May. Don't hesitate to splash out on quality items. ï

A career opportunity will arrive in early April. This is the best time of the entire year to land a terrific job. Don't hesitate to ask former employers, teachers and coaches to write some referrals for you. Steer clear of discussing money matters on the 7th, when the New Moon will undermine your earning power. Your job description could change around the middle of April. Stay calm. These adjustments could ultimately work in your favour. If you can't get the salary you want, you'll be able to negotiate some good fringe benefits near the 22nd. That's when the Full Moon can attract impressive perks. When given a choice between taking a flat salary and earning a commission, choose the latter. You'll easily outperform the competition. Advertising and social media will be key components to your success. A captivating blend of words and images will drive new business to your door. Be relentless about 17 getting the word out.

NO-ONE ADMITTED AFTER START OF ELMBRIDGE CHILLER Neil Armstrong, Rebecca Hack and Will Busby in a scene from “The Cat and the Canary”.

According to the Surrey paranormal database, Walton-on-Thames has its share of things that go bump in the night. It records whisperings, strange footsteps and `stationery cupboard doors rattling unaided by human hand` at the Clock Tower in Bridge Street - and the ghost of the man who signed Charles I`s death warrant appearing in the Old Manor House in Manor Road. Theatres are famous for their ghosts - and, set in a solitary recess off Hepworth Way, the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse may be no exception. The Playhouse was originally part of movie pioneer Hepworth`s film studios and one of his movies, “A Ghostly Affair”, the story of a burglar driven away from a haunted castle by paintings coming to life, had audiences looking through closed fingers in 1914. The studios, turned into a local theatre in 1924, are now home to the The Ember Players – and many a set or lighting designer, burning the midnight oil, has been aware of unexplained shufflings and whisperings along its corridors and staircases. A perfect setting, it seemed, for the group`s spring production – a retelling of the classic comedy chiller “The Cat and the Canary” written by John Willard in 1922 and immortalised in the 1939 film starring Paulette Goddard and Bob Hope. Director Lisa Mills has devised and is staging an ingenious re-telling of the classic original story. “It`s a comedy melodrama set in the home

18

of a deceased millionaire,” she explains. “A shadowy world where, according to the psychic housekeeper, `Evil spirits are at work`. The characters are potential `heirs` gathering for a reading of the will – but only one can inherit, provided they don`t meet with death or go mad within one month.” Throw in an escapee from an asylum for the criminally insane and an ominous gong that presages `Of the eight people present in this room, only seven will survive the night` and you have some of the ingredients of a white knuckle evening of murder and suspense. “The script has more twists and turns than a game of Cluedo,” says Lisa, “And there are lots of laughs long the way. My cast has sworn an oath of secrecy not to reveal the ending of the play. We`re going to make our audiences take that oath, too – and noone, but no-one will be admitted once the curtain has gone up.” “The Cat and the Canary”, sponsored by Savills Esher Lettings, is at the Cecil Hepworth Playhouse, Walton on Thames, from April 28th – 30th at 8 p.m. Book tickets, if you dare, from 07752-655087 or www.ticketsource.co.uk/emberplayers Picture by Roy Morris

Is Your Anxiety Relationship Anxiety: How It Affects Preventing YouYou From and A Sound WhatSleep? You Can Lets Do About Learn To Deal It with It by Shaan White by Shaan White

with an impulse to sleep so unless you think you are going to fall back asleep quickly, you mustn’t stay in bed. Get out of bed and take a walk, go into another room or sit in a chair until you feel like you are sleepy again.

Sleep disorders, which stem as a result of suffering from anxiety, are not uncommon. You might find it difficult to sleep, wake up abruptly from sound sleep, or find it difficult to sleep altogether, also known as insomnia. Anxiety can cause a range of sleep problems but recent research also suggests that a lack of sleep can lead to an anxiety disorder as well.

Distract Yourself The momentary panic can invite negative thoughts in your mind and you want to keep them at bay. It is important for this reason, that you must distract yourself if you can’t fall back asleep. Read a book, have a warm cup of milk or snack, or engage yourself in any other light activity that will occupy your mind for the time being.

What Causes Abrupt Alertness during Sleep What really happens to cause you to wake up with a jerk from your sleep? The answer is that your brain is mimicking a pattern from an earlier time where you may have been in a stressful situation and then, it sends you in a stressed state even when the stressor is no longer there. This causes the abrupt alertness in the mind that wakes you up from sleep.

Stay Relaxed It’s easier said than done but you can get there with some practice. You need to keep your mind relaxed and those anxieties waiting to attack you, at bay. You can practice meditation while sitting in bed or find another technique that you know allows you to feel relaxed.

Sleep deprivation due to anxiety can cause many problems, such as the inability to go back to sleep, not getting enough sleep, feeling lethargic and tired throughout the day and developing health problems because of lack of proper sleep. What Can You Do? Anxieties manifest in many ways from mild to severe cases, and the best way to go about it is to find the root cause of your anxiety and get treatment. However, if you find yourself waking up from the middle of your sleep, here are some tips to consider: Take a Walk You want your brain to associate the bed

Try to form a consistent sleep routine and avoid using any gadgets at least 2 hours before going to bed. It is common to feel the daily stressors of work pressure and home responsibilities but if you find yourself coping with insomnia or sleep deprivation too frequently, chances are that it’s a deeper level of anxiety that is the trigger. For assistance and the right treatment, book your appointment with an anxiety expert. For more information, get in touch at theanxietyexpert@gmail.com or visit www. theanxietyexpert.com.

The referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union (EU) will be held on 23 June. David Cameron fought hard for a better deal. Nevertheless, as a matter of personal conviction, I believe Britain’s prospects would be brighter outside the EU. The EU risks stifling British competitiveness and suffocating democratic oversight. Big business, banks and bureaucrats want Britain to stay in the EU for marginal convenience. By contrast, leaving the EU offers opportunities for the consumer, the small business owner, and the family struggling with bills. For example, ditching the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy would cut food bills by up to 17% and skewed EU energy regulation will add £149 to energy bills by 2020. Of course, we still want to trade with Europe but our greatest growth opportunities lie beyond. Since 2009 Britain has been selling more to non-EU countries than EU ones. Over the past decade, growth in UK exports outside the EU was double our rate within the EU. The “remain” campaign tells us Britain is too small to count and the heft of the EU gets free trade deals done. Yet the EU itself has sealed trade deals only with medium-sized nations (South Korea is the largest), while Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, has deals with Japan and China, and is negotiating with India. Freed from the special interests and protectionism of the

EU, Britain would be able to negotiate free trade deals to create more jobs, drive up wages, and cut the cost of living. Beyond trade, it’s the same story. On immigration, 257,000 EU nationals came to live in the UK in the last year alone. Big business likes uncontrolled EU immigration because it provides cheap labour, but EU law has made it harder to deport convicted foreign criminals. Perhaps the strongest argument for leaving the EU is to restore and strengthen your democratic control over UK laws and policy. More than 60% of UK laws are now made in, or derive from, Brussels. Can we realistically expect such laws to reflect what Britons want, now they are the product of haggling with 27 governments, a commission (of 33,000 officials), the European parliament and a court of justice that the former attorney-general Dominic Grieve describes as “predatory”? If we want to be masters of our own destiny, we must step off the EU juggernaut. We shouldn’t be cowed by those predicting doom outside the EU. EU firms sell us £59 billion more goods and services than we sell back to them. Rational self-interest will ensure we stay strong trading partners. That’s why I will campaign to make the positive outward-looking case to leave the EU: to boost jobs, cut the cost of living, and restore democratic control over our laws.

Police 5 (Minutes) Hate Crime By Sarah Milligan Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector Have you or someone you know been a victim of a hate crime or hate incident? Hate crimes and incidents come in many different forms and are targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that person due to age or disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

communities are tackled properly. There are several ways you can report hate crime, whether you have been a victim, a witness, or you are reporting it on behalf of someone else. You can call us in an emergency on 999 or the non-urgent 101 number. You can make an online report by visiting www.surrey.police.uk/report or the True Vision hate crime reporting website at www.report-it.org.uk. You can also use third party reporting centres at safe neutral locations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Community Voluntary Services. If you do not want to talk to police, you can inform Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppersuk.org.uk. You do not have to give your personal details, but please be aware, the investigation and ability to prosecute any offender(s) is severely limited if we cannot contact you.

A victim does not need to be a member of the group at which the hostility is targeted. In fact, anyone can be a victim of hate crime and it can be committed against a person or their property. Hate crime in any form is wrong. That is why it is important that if hate crime happens to you or someone you know, that you report it. By reporting them when they happen to you, you may be able to prevent them happening to someone else. Even if you don’t want them investigated, it is important that the police know about them so that we can build up a picture of how many incidents are happening and where – whether these are random actions or part of a campaign of continued harassment and victimisation. We want to know so that we can work with our partners to jointly address the problem and ensure that crimes against those within our

We take all reports of hate crime very seriously. People are entitled to live their lives free from bullying and harassment. Everyone has the right to feel safe and secure and to live free from the fear of crime. Dealing with hate crime is vital to protect the rights and freedoms of all members of our community, whatever their background, gender, faith, sexual orientation or physical and mental ability.

Telephone Surrey Police on 101 and ask to speak to a member of the Safer neighbourhood Team for your area. www.surrey.police.uk 28
