EDITOR’S NOTE
November always feels like a pause…the calm before the holiday rush, the smell of something warm in the oven, the reminder to slow down and take a moment to appreciate what you have. Gratitude, connection, and comfort show up in the little things, and this month, we’ve filled the pages of Horizons with moments that bring people (and pets!) together.
Start with our holiday spread on pages 8 and 9, where you’ll find all the Thanksgiving and seasonal events happening across FSS. From community meals to festive gatherings, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. One of my personal favorites this month is the Patio Pawty on page 20; Chili’s is opening up its patio again for a dog-friendly outdoor meal where your pup gets free food and even a photo with Santa! Talk about an overload of cuteness! I am just so grateful that we as humans get to have such cute companions, including kitties! This is the kind of event that makes you smile before you even get there.
If your fall goals include learning something new, the Taiyo Community Center has music classes for all skill levels. From guitar and piano to traditional Japanese koto, you’ll find all the info on page 22. Wherever this month takes you–around a table, behind an instrument, or out on the patio with your four-legged bestie–I hope you find time to enjoy it.

HORIZONS is published for United States Military and Department of Defense personnel and their family members living in or assigned to the Kanto Plain region and Japanese Nationals and their families assigned to Yokota Air Base, Japan. Horizons is the official magazine of the 374th Force Support Squadron, Yokota Air Base, Japan. A Letter’s Journey
On average, the Yokota Post Office receives 12,000 pounds and ships 2,000 pounds of mail every day, but not many Yokota residents know what it takes for these precious parcels to travel around the world. The postal journey is far and intricate, but organized and efficient thanks to the United States Postal Service (USPS) and Yokota Post Office.

Incoming Mail Outgoing Mail
1
3
Mail is first routed to Chicago or San Francisco
Mail leaves the State via plane and arrives at Narita Airport.
2
1
Employees of the Air Mail Terminal (AMT) take the two hour drive to Narita three times a day to transport mail to Yokota.
Twice a day, AMT drops off mail at the Yokota Post Office.
4
Mail is sorted by Post Office employees. Packages are placed on shelves by weight—lighter packages on higher shelves and heavier packages on bottom shelves. Letters, magazines, postcards and smaller packages are numerically sorted in small cubbies.
Parcels are scanned and an automatic email notification is immediately sent to the receiver.
2
The AMT team picks up mail from the Yokota Post Office twice a day and transports them to Narita.
Depending on the addressee’s zip code, mail is sent through Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or Hawaii. Everything is shipped to the US First, even if being shipped to another country (including Japan).
INSIDER INFORMATION & TIPS FROM POSTAL PROS
Out processing or sponsoring a new Yokota resident? Don’t forget to stop by the Yokota Post Office’s Customer Service Office with a copy of the new resident’s orders.
You can buy stamps at the Yokota Post Office and Commissary.
Wait until you leave the Post Office to open your mail. For safety and security reasons, customers are not permitted to open their packages in the Post Office building.
Shipping restrictions vary on the package’s original and final destination. For specific rules and regulations, visit USPS.com or speak with a Yokota Post Office representative.
Packages that are too big must be shipped outside of a bag and are more prone to being damaged by weather and other various factors. However, the Yokota Post Office staff tries their best to rewrap and reseal any damaged packages.
You do not have to have an APO address to ship through the Yokota Post Office. All you need is SOFA status and a valid CAC, dependent ID or contractor’s ID.

FSS TRAVEL
SAPPORO SNOW FESTIVAL
SIGN-UP BEGINS: SAT • 8 NOV

The Sapporo Snow Festival, held annually in early February, is one of Japan’s most spectacular winter events, drawing visitors from around the globe to marvel at glittering snow and ice creations. First staged in 1950, when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park, it has grown into an internationally renowned extravaganza featuring hundreds of towering works–some soaring over 50 feet–depicting global landmarks, cultural icons, and scenes from history and pop culture. The festival spans three main venues: Odori Park, a mile-long stretch lined with monumental snow sculptures, illuminations, and food stalls; Susukino, where intricate ice carvings shimmer under the city lights; and the family-friendly Tsudome site, offering snow slides, rafting, and interactive fun. Visitors can enjoy dazzling nighttime displays, live music and cultural performances, winter activities, and an indulgent taste of Hokkaido–from steaming bowls of miso ramen and fresh crab to grilled seafood, Jingisukan (grilled lamb), and creamy dairy-based sweets.
Beyond the festival, Sapporo itself is a vibrant northern city blending modern energy with warm hospitality. Its bustling Susukino entertainment district glows with neon, inviting travelers into cozy izakayas, ramen shops, and restaurants that serve everything from inventive seasonal dishes to beloved comfort foods. Whether exploring snowy streets or savoring local flavors late into the night, Sapporo offers a perfect blend of winter wonder and urban charm.
We are offering a few exciting departure dates. Get ready to experience one of Japan’s most spectacular winter events! Tour costs and full details will be available in the ITT November Tour Brochure.
