2022/23WINTERAUTUMN/ THE MENUHIN HALL.CO.UK

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to our Winter Festival, which runs from 11–14 December. Starting with The Snowman, partnered with a special presentation of The Nutcracker complete with narration and illustrations, the festival will also celebrate the 90th birthday of one of our longest serving piano teachers, Ruth Nye. And to bring the year to a close, another of our Associate Artists, Maxim Rysanov, will join me and our students for a finale featuring the masterly piano quintet of César Franck (born 200 years ago in December) and festive works for choir and orchestra by Corelli and Vaughan Williams. I look forward to seeing you at The Menuhin Hall in the months ahead. We welcome a range of artists whose backgrounds defy borders; the Castalian Quartet, who take their name from Greek mythology, a recital by a celebrated Irish soprano Ailish Tynan and her Welsh accompanist Jocelyn Freeman, and an appearance from world-leading harpsichordist and newly appointed YMS Associate Artist, Mahan Esfahani, originally from Iran. Particularly exciting will be the visit of the Brodsky Quartet (named in honour of the great Russian violinist, Adolf Brodsky), who will perform side by side with our students in music for string octet. To shine a spotlight on another of the many wonderful elements of our students’ education, our upcoming Showcases will now feature short compositions by pupils of the school. Trust me – there is some serious compositional talent within our community!

Welcome Welcome to our Autumn/Winter series of concerts. Our over-arching theme for the season is ‘Around the World’, which is intended to reflect the gloriously cosmopolitan community of The Yehudi Menuhin School, and the fact that we are scheduled to open our sister school in Qingdao, China in Autumn 2022. As such, our programmes will have a truly international flavour, as we celebrate the diverse riches of the musical canon.

Tickets: £10–£33, under 30s half price “Back in the early 70s, a group of children on Teesside began to passionately study quartets by Bartók and Beethoven, the start of a lifetime commitment which became the magnificent Brodsky Quartet. At exactly the same time, as a 12-year-old at YMS, I was throwing myself with equal enthusiasm into learning those same quartets under the inspiring tutelage of Peter Norris. I knew then that my musical life would be centred around this wonderful and enriching repertoire. Now, fifty years later, I’m thrilled to have joined the dream team of the Brodskys, with all of our original enthusiasm undimmed. We look forward to this exciting collaboration with YMS, hoping that chamber music and quartet playing will give the students as much joy as it continues to give us.”

Mahan Esfahani has made it his life’s mission to rehabilitate the harpsichord in the mainstream of concert instruments, and to that end his creative programming and work in commissioning new works have drawn the attention of critics and audiences across the world. He was the first and only harpsichordist to be a BBC New Generation Artist (2008–10), a Borletti-Buitoni prize winner (2009), a nominee for Gramophone’s Artist of the Year (2014, 2015, and 2017) and the winner of the Wigmore Medal in 2022. His work for the harpsichord has resulted in recitals in most of the major series and concert halls, amongst them London’s Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre and his richly-varied discography includes seven critically-acclaimed recordings for Hyperion and Deutsche Grammophon –garnering one Gramophone award and two BBC Music Magazine Awards. We are thrilled to be welcoming Mahan on stage with our pupils as YMS Associate Artist for what will be a truly unique and unforgettable concert.

Chamber music is a central element of our students’ education at YMS (as it will one day become a central element of their professional lives) and is an essential component of their growth both as musicians and people. Not only do they learn to listen more acutely – all whilst immersing themselves in some of the greatest music in the classical canon – they also develop their interpersonal skills and powers of diplomacy. Friendships built through the channel of communal music-making often last for life, and there is no better place to set these foundations in place than at YMS!
