Object & Electronics: Rubber band box (wooden/paper box with rubber bands crossed over) Glass (for drinking) Tin can (empty food can with 2 rubber bands crossed over it. Open in one end.) C-vitamin tube (or treo) C-vitamin fizzies (or treo) C-vitamin caps (or treo; 2-4) Stones (2 stones; at least one of them flat) Grit (1-2 kilograms; medium big grit) Sand (1/2-1 kilograms; fine sand) Water (1-2 litre) Leaves (at least a handfull dry leaves) Branches (5-10 dry branches) Rubber bands (to use on the tin can and the rubber band box; at least 15) Bow (to use on the metal bowl) Plastic tub (to put the grit into) Watering can (to put the water in; nicer version for table) Metal bowl (to put the sand in; 3-5 litre) 2 mp3-players (with playlist) 1 Voice recorder (with speed control) 2 Audiovibe speakers (for example the brand iZound) 1 Mixer (small/or big) 2 Microphones (small ones for the table) 2/4 Speakers (either small ones on the object table or big ones in the concert hall)

Explanations Violin Play at the nutpeg

Play with the bow on the tail piece.

Play with the wood part of the bow. Shift bow.

Molto vibrato. Smooth lines.

Make a circle motion with the tip of the bow while damping all the strings.

The same technique as above but no damping.

Make a pizzicato on the fourth string behind the bridge

A pizzicato arpeggio.

Fast vibrato. Small motions. Play a glissando from a diminished artificial harmonic. Stay on the g#2 but glide up on the harmonics.

Play on the strings so that you can hear the tones from the finger positioning. No bow. Make an audible sound removing the metal mute.

Play a tone and make accents on harmonics.

From an harmonic to normal tone to double stop.

Play with the bow on the instrument body.

Damp all the strings and glide with the wood part of the bow up towards the bridge.

Damp all strings. Play short tones with hard pressure to make a sound similar to an old door.

Make a tremolo with the bow on the 1st and 2nd string on the bridge. Damp all strings. Should be no tone, only soft noise.

Make a pizzicato with two fingers. Soft but strong.

Flute Tremolo between two different type of air tones; half to completely covered labium.

Play a reverse slap.

Play a normal grace note. The next tone is a normal note, which is the same in both flute and voice. End the gesture outside of the flute making a sh- sound (like shell).

Play a tremolo and overblow according to the dynamic. Play double tongue on air tone; partly covered labium.

Play white noise air tone through covering the labium.

Turn your head side to side and blow air on the mouth piece to make sound. Cover the labium with flat fingers.

Same as above but covered with a cup hand. The dynamic means the effort and not the result.

Play on the detached mouth piece. Cover, un-cover the end part. Make a creaking sound with your voice into the opening of the mouth piece.

Cover half of the labium with flat fingers and play a rhythm with the diaphragm.

Different types of air tones. Flat fingers.

Play audible key sounds. No air. The dynamic is showing the effort and not the result.

Play a frullato. Fr-sound. Blow air through the mouth piece when it is removed from the flute.

Play normally from g to a. Then sing a glissando from b to a1 while playing audible key sounds.

Play an overblow gesture with throat fluttertongue.

Play accent with fr-sound.

Play tones and sing at the same time.The first tone is the same in voice and flute.

Multiphonics

Object Put fine sand in a metal bowl and make a sound through making a turning motion.

Crush some c-vitamins and let a piece of them into a glass of water. Practise the amount to know how much to use for specific dynamics.

Same as above but lean the bowl in different directions.

Same as above but damp the sound. Hold hand above or put a piece of thick paper over it.

Make the sand jump to make a percussive sound.

Play on a rubber band box. The box is either a wooden or paper one. Put rubber band over it and try to make a different sound on each rubber band. It depends on the tension and quality of the rubber band. The first gesture is just a glissando over the whole box. Next event is the highest and lowest band at the same time.

Play on the metal bowl with a bow.

Shake caps from a c-vitamin tube (the c-vitamins are fizzies). The sound will be similar to eggs.

Blow air on to a c-vitamin tube (no cap). Airy sound.

Same as above but more precise. The dynamic is showing the effort and not the result.

Play a low tone on the rubber band box that has a rich and soft low timbre. Play on a tin can (from food). Put two rubber band across it and play. Percussive sound is made when played on the lower side (not opened). The bands should smash against the metal. Same object as above but a soft tone, which is played on the upper side of the can (opened).

Play on the tin can. Pull up one of the bands more and more and play a pizzicato on it. The tone will be higher and higher. Instructions when to play the soundfiles on the mp3-players. This is mp3-player number 1 playing the first soundfile.

This is mp3-player number 2 playing the second soundfile, the first soundfile on this mp3-player.

Record the ensemble with the voice recorder (no microphones need to be plugged in). Play up the recorded soundfile from the voice recorder but in a different speed than normally. Do the setting before so that it will be played in tempo 66% instead of 100%. Notation of different materials that is used in the piece. 1st line: Water (poured from a can) 2nd line: Stones (grinded and hit) 3rd line: Branches (break dry ones) 4th line: Leaves (crush dry ones) 5th line: Grit (crush with feet)
