tales from the pandemic

This project asked our community how they handled the ever changing world that the COVID-19 pandemic created How they struggled, what they learned, and what made them feel most supported

"I think COVID was a very different time for everyone one. For me personally it messed with my emotions. I enjoyed being home a lot and being able to finish school early but the hardest part was losing someone close to COVID."

"Just a couple days before covid started I wasn’t in the happiest state of mind I was always in a bad mood and I didn’t have the urge to go to school to get my education, but as soon as covid started, my sister helped me with my emotional state, which helped me start to feel different and happier with my life than before."

This year was different from others ecause it was a lot of trial and error. With playing sports the whole protocol changed from week to week. Also being back at school it was noticeable how the lack of social interaction had changed a lot of the younger generations."

flautas de papas

Prep time 5-8 Minutes | Total time 20-25 Minutes

INGREDIENTS

Flour tortillas

4 Russet potatoes

1/4 cup Mexican crema

Salsa de jitomate(tomato sauce):

4 roma tomatoes

3 garlic cloves

3 chile de árbol, charred

1/4 white onion

1/4 Cup Mexican mayonesa

Hot sauce of your choice

1/4 cup queso fresco

1-2 chicken bouillon cubes

1 tsp Mexican orega

1-2 cups of water

1 tbsp canola oil

DIRECTIONS

For your flauta filling, begin by boiling peeled potatoes and do what you would normally do to create mashed potatoes. Once tender, crush the potatoes through a ricer and mix in your spicy Mexican cheese and crema mixture. Season to taste and then set aside.

For your dipping salsa, simply toss everything into a blender, blitz and then pour into a hot pot that has about 1 tbsp of canola oil (This will splatter a lot so be careful!). Then season with 1-2 bouillon cubes and simmer for at least 15 minutes or until you get a nice salsa consistency.

While that is simmering, preheat some frying oil to 350° F. Then warm your flour tortillas, add some of your potato filling, roll, and secure your roll with a toothpick if needed. Fry your flautas until golden brown, drizzle on some cream and serve with your salsa. Enjoy!!

LGBTQ+ history: the pink triangle

(Content Warning: Before you read, please be advised the following contains a brief discussion about Homophobia, World War II and Nazis.)

Before World War II, did you know that Germany was one of the leading countries in research and activist reform work for acceptance of homosexuality? Perhaps you were not aware, unless you did some digging into history books. It can be difficult to find historical documentation regarding LGBTQ+ history, and we must acknowledge that the presence of LGBTQ+ communities have gone through many forms of erasure, similar to the experience of other marginalized groups. The stories and experience of LGBTQ+ people couldn’t be seen, heard or told.

The story of the “Pink Triangle” is a painful one to re-tell, but it is one that is quite important to mention. The pink triangle became a reclaimed symbol for the gay liberation movement during the 1970s in America, as well as an international symbol for gay rights

During WWII, as noted in Finding Out: An Intro to LGBTQ Studies, “the pink triangle [was] used to identify homosexual men so that they could be singled out and persecuted in the Nazi concentration camps.” As many as 100,000 men were captured by Nazis, who identified these men as homosexuals, and were sent to concentration camps.

This act was a consequence of an 1871 german penal code called Paragraph 175. This code outlawed sodomy souly between men, not amongst women. Unfortunately, even post-WWII, pink triangle prisoners were still classified as criminals due to paragraph 175, and if they got caught, they would be re-imprisoned, despite being freed (An Introduction to LGBTQ Studies, 61).

queer summer recommenda

Film Recommendation:

The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (1995)

This flick is SUPER cute if you’re looking for something light-hearted and sapphic. Two teenagers, the butch oddball Randy Dean (Laurel Holloman) and the dreamy popular girl Evie Roy (Nicole Ari Parker), live in a small town and become more than just close friends, despite the different social circles and living situations It’s absolutely a to watch the relationship blossom, and see how the pair co revealing their relationship to their families.

Music Recommendation:

Rooted in the early 1970s feminist women’s music movement, Cris Williamson’s deep vocals and catchy melodies are absolutely stunning to listen to! This album in particular has sounds of Rock, Folk, World, and Country. Listening to this album while driving down the highway or the countryside with the summer wind in your face sets the tone for a relaxing ride.

what is long covid?

Long COVID, sometimes called Post-COVID, is simply the symptoms that can come after having COVID-19. Long COVID symptoms can keep on affecting a person even when the virus is completely gone. According to the CDC, some of these symptoms may last months and even years which can lead to developing long term health conditions that can lead to a disability. This is why it’s important to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine can lower the risk of getting COVID and reduce dramatic symptoms that lead to Long COVID. Even if you already had COVID and have Long COVID currently, getting vaccinated is still a good idea. According to the CDC, getting vaccinated has been shown to improve Long COVID symptoms among those who were unvaccinated when infected.

Here is a list of Long COVID symptoms:

Tiredness or fatigue that interferes with life on a daily basis.

Difficulty breathing and/or shortness of breath

Heart palpitations (fast-beating heart)

Brain Fog (difficulty thinking)

Pins-and-Needles feelings

Change in Smell or Taste

Rashes

tobacco use & covid

Tobacco use during the COVID-19 pandemic is really bad for our communityespecially since the COVID is a respiratory virus and attacks the lungs. Those in our community who are unvaccinated and smoke are at a higher risk of having long term respiratory problems after having COVID. These problems may even develop into a weakened immune system and trouble fighting common illnesses such as influenza and colds. Here are some online resources to learn more or get involved:

Let’s be real. The Tobacco Industry has a long history of harming communities of color, especially young people, so we’re working together to be a part of the solution.

Mobilizing Youth to Nix Tobacco (MYNT) is a coalition of young people (ages 14-24) and their adult allies working to reduce tobacco-related health issues that deeply impact the African-American community and communities of color in the Central Valley through advocacy, education, and action.
