The Miwok, Yokut, and Mono tribes are the indigenous inhabitants of Madera County
The first lumber mill was constructed in 1852 and lumber became a key factor in the region's economy... Hence the town's name "Madera" aka "lumber" in Spanish!
The first post office in Madera opened in 1877
