La universidad de California Riverside (UCR) Escuela de Medicina en colaboración con los miembros de la comunidad en el valle este de Coachella está llevando a cabo un proyecto sobre el medio ambiente y la salud de los niños viviendo alrededor de la laguna de Salton.
Foto y voz es una herramienta para la investigación participativa y la acción social. Es un proceso participativo sistemático que produce la " voz " de un grupo colectivo sobre una preocupación comunitaria mutua y genera recomendaciones de política.
En nuestro proyecto, las fotografías son los vehículos principales a través de los cuales las mamás surgen perspectivas, ideas y recomendaciones para mejorar la salud de sus hijos.
Installamos senores de aire en las casas de los participantes en el estudio para medir los fuentes interiores. Los fuentes podrían ser: cocina, chimeneas, fumar en el hogar, mascotas, productos químicos de limpieza. Ademas los contaminantes puedan entran a través de puertas, ventanas y aires acondicionados.

Somos jóvenes del Este del Valle de Coachella (ECV). Es importante que nuestras comunidades tengan acceso a la información sobre la Laguna del Salton Sea y el impacto que puede tener en nuestra salud. Esperamos que la información proporcionada en esta edición pueda ofrecer información sobre cómo la calidad del aire y la Laguna del Salton pueden afectar la salud de los niños. En esta edición, también escuchará a los miembros de la comunidad en el ECV y cómo navegan sus vidas diariamente, incluso durante los eventos ambientales.

Las partículas en el aire generalmente se clasifican por su tamaño. Dos tamaños que frecuentemente se miden y regulan se llaman PM10 y PM2.5. PM10 también se denomina "partículas gruesas " e incluye partículas de hasta 10 micrones (¡una millonésima parte de un metro!) de ancho.
Para obtener una mejor comprensión de qué tan pequeñas son estas partículas, hemos incluido una figura a continuación de este párrafo. Como puede ver en el gráfico, un grano fino de arena de playa tiene unos 90 micrones de diámetro, mientras que el ancho de un cabello humano mide alrededor de 50-70 micrones. PM10, una de las categorías de contaminantes que analizamos en este estudio, es unas cinco veces más fina que un solo cabello. ¡PM2.5, o "partículas finas", es aproximadamente 4 veces más pequeño que eso!

El PM2.5 puede penetrar más en el cuerpo y llegar a los pulmones debido a su tamaño muy pequeño. Mientras ninguna cantidad de PM inhalada es saludable, la EPA ha establecido estándares para indicar los niveles de contaminación que son especialmente dañinos para la salud.
En 2022 recopilamos los datos de 15 miembros de la comunidad viviendo en los alrededores de la laguna de Salton.

Las Actividades al Aire Libre son Limitadas
"Ese día estábamos haciendo actividades afuera al aire libre y empezó a toser [mucho] Y dije pues qué es lo que tiene verdad y ya cuando volteé mire que estaba haciendo aire y estaba una nube de humo grandes de un incendio que hubo ese día entonces el humo se miraba desde Thermal hasta Indio. Nosotros estábamos en Indio [...] el aire estaba llevando el humo hasta allá y él empezó a [agitarse] Entonces [ ] dije no pues vamos adentro porque pues no puede estar afuera porque estabas tosiendo y tosiendo y tosiendo tuvo que usar su inhalador."

The University of California Riverside (UCR) School of Medicine in collaboration with community members from the Eastern Coachella Valley are working on a project about the environment and the health of children living around the Salton Sea.
Photo and voice is a tool for participatory investigation and social action. It’s a systematic participatory process that produces the “voice” of a collective group around a mutual community concern and generates policy recommendations.
In our project, photographs serve as the principal vehicle through which the mothers’ perspectives, ideas and recommendations to improve the health of their children emerge.
We installed air sensors in the homes of participants as part of the study to measure indoor sources. Sources could be: the kitchen, fireplaces, smoking in the home, pets and chemicals from cleaning products. Contaminants can also enter through doors, windows and air conditioners.

We are young people from the Eastern Coachella Valley. We believe that it is important for our communities to have access to information about the Salton Sea and the impact it has and may have on our health. We hope the information provided in this issue will be able to offer insight on how our air quality and the Salton Sea can impact children's health. In this issue you'll also hear from community members in the ECV and how they navigate their everyday lives even throughout environmental events.
We want to thank UCR School of Medicine for providing youth the opportunity to support in the creation of this publication. Thank you to all of the Promotoras for their countless hard work and dedication to their communities.

Airborne particles are typically classified by their size. Two sizes that are frequently measured and regulated are PM10 and PM 2.5. PM10 is also called “coarse particulate matter” and includes particles up to 10 microns (one millionth of a meter!) across.
To get a better understanding of how small these particles are, we’ve included a figure below this paragraph. As you can see from the graph, a fine grain of beach sand is about 90 microns in diameter, while the width of a human hair is about 50-70 microns. PM10, one of the categories of pollutants we observed in this study, is about five times finer than a single hair. PM2.5, or “fine particulate matter”, is about 4 times smaller than that!

Too many particles in the air can cause health problems especially for the smaller particles that can get past our body’s natural defenses.
PM10 frequently becomes trapped in the mouth, nose, and upper respiratory system.
PM2.5 can pen
very small size. While no amount of inhaled PM is healthy, the EPA has set standards to indicate levels of pollution that are especially harmful to health.
In 2022 we collected data from 15 community members living around the Salton Sea.
