from the editor Summer is a good moment to try a new water sport, whether it be sailing, diving, rowing, windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing... or just swimming. And if you share the experience with friends or family, even better!

I tried surfing for the first time this past spring with my kids and my friend Laura.

Neither my children nor I thought I’d ever manage to stand up on the board, so we were nicely surprised when I succeeded on my first lesson. Now, eager to continue learning, I am planning surfing trips to beaches with easy waves for beginners.

Remember World Oceans Day is on June 8th. Please get involved in protecting our planet and our oceans. Awesome changes are possible when we all make an effort, and getting educated on environmental issues is a smart first step.

Hope you all enjoy a great summer!

Yo me animé a hacer surf por primera vez esta primavera junto a mis hijos y a mi amiga Laura, y ni mis hijos ni yo pensamos que lograría poder pararme en la tabla, por lo que nos sorprendimos gratamente cuando lo conseguí hacer en mi primera clase. Ahora estoy encantada de continuar aprendiendo, y planeando viajes de surf a playas con olas fáciles para principiantes.

Recuerden que el Día de los Océanos del Mundo es el 8 de Junio. Por favor, involúcrense en proteger al planeta y a nuestros océanos. Los cambios impresionantes son posibles si todos hacemos un esfuerzo, y educarnos en temas de medioambiente es un muy buen primer paso. ¡Espero que todos disfruten de un excelente verano!.

enoa is a city rich in art and history that must be discovered step by step, by entering its labyrinth of narrow alleys called ‘caruggi’. The historic center is one of the biggest in Europe, and certain views give us a glimpse on the Middle Ages. A Premonition of Newport

I

t was a stormy night in 1638, when a group of former Puritans, kicked out of Boston for troubling the peace of the commonwealth, sailed south to Aquidneck Island on Narragansett Bay, where Roger Williams convinced them to settle in the area of his Providence Plantations. They then purchased Aquidneck Island from the Narragansett Tribe.

Prior to that time, Aquidneck was used primarily as a hunting territory although it was probably a summer residence as well. In 1639, followed by some settlers, William Coddington moved south on Aquidneck Island to found Newport, now famous for its excellent harbor.

Do you see the key words? Troubling the peace, sailed, Narragansett Bay, summer residence, excellent harbor… How did they know that they were creating a sailing town where sailing would be both a hobby and a profession, that Narragansett Bay would be the location of major regattas, that everyone would want a summer residence from the Vanderbilts to international sailing teams, and that the excellent Newport Harbor would be the site of many “harbor burns” as victory laps are taken while sailors toast with rum or champagne? How did they know?

Where to sail? The 2016 World Match Tour in M32s raced on the east side of Ft. Adams while the Volvo Ocean Race brought thousands of spectators to watch the racing on the

west side of Ft. Adams. The team racing regattas take place on the west side of Goat Island.

From BACARDI Newport Sailing Week to the America’s Cup 12 Metres and more recently big boats race on the Rhode Island Sound. The Pell Newport Bridge looks down upon racing on both sides of the Narragansett Bay…south of the bridge, there are many races including the start line for the Around The Island Races (Conanicut Island which is the home of Jamestown). Beyond the bridge, the bay, wide and open, is the location of many regattas including the 350 plus boats sailing in the Optimist New England Championship. It is up to the Race Committee to decide and, many times, they have to coordinate with the other clubs to determine their racing venue.

Who runs them? Talk about a plethora of yacht clubs… Newport’s prestigious New York Yacht Club (Harbour Court) hosts regattas almost every weekend. Its view of the Harbor and the Pell Bridge cannot be surpassed. Ida Lewis Yacht Club has a friendly atmosphere and many sailing traditions, especially in running the popular Shields Class and 12 Metre races.

Newport Yacht Club, the oldest club in the harbor, dating to 1894, provides a welcoming environment for individuals and families with shared interests in yachting, traditions, seamanship and camaraderie. The incredible Sail Newport, New England’s largest public sailing center, is always the center of action and the organizing authority for many regattas. Sail To Prevail, the National Disabled Sailing Program, is busy too with classes and racing. Newport Shipyard hosts regattas and parties including ones for the majestic 1930’s J Boats and the mega yachts with the “Candy Store Cup”, and now it will also be home to BACARDI’s Sailing Week event. From the years of the America’s Cup to the Volvo Ocean Race Round The World, wherever you race or party, you will find it difficult to pick any other town that beats Newport as the Sailing Capital of North America.

ow in its 22nd year, Sperry Charleston Race Week has evolved to become a mecca for trailerable one-design sailboats from across the country. Competitors arrived from over 24 different U.S. states and seven foreign countries to attend the largest regatta of its kind in the Americas. Over 200 boats and close to 2,000 sailors raced on six separate racecourses in a harbor riddled with strong tides and an active commercial shipping scene.

New this year was the Pro-Am event where top-tier racers battled it out in three separate contests aboard a fleet of J/22s. Performing consistently in 12-knot southerly breezes, Christophe Killian, a member of the College of Charleston’s varsity sailing team and the No.1 ranked match racer in the U.S., bested his rivals, which included America’s Cup winners, Olympic medalists and multi-time world, North American and national champions.

icem Yachts is proud to introduce the V46 IPS - the very first model of the new Vicem IPS. This model is the first Vicem built in fiberglass/epoxy, in this size. Light, sturdy, and with a beam of 14’,9’’, it has sufficient interior volume to allow the owner to choose between spacious two and three cabin designs. The yacht’s dimensions boast a LOA of 14.02m (46’) and a draft of 0.70m (2’4’)’ with a displacement of 18,000kg (39,683lbs.) at full load.

This yacht –designed by Vicem’s in-house design team- has a handsome classic look and provides a quiet, smooth ride, thanks to Vicem’s renowned superior design and construction techniques.

The Vicem 46 IPS combines elegant looks with sportive lines and technology. With excellent use of exterior and interior design, it stands out from other yachts of the same length.

The primary aim when designing the 46 IPS was to create comfortable and luminous spaces. When coming aboard, you enter first into the bar zone with a comfortable L-shaped settee. The lounge and cockpit are separated by a sliding door: when open there is no longer any separation and a single large living space has been created.

The lounge area offers comfortable seating to fully enjoy the entertainment systems, while the large side windows and front windshield provide excellent visibility and lots of daylight.

For maximum comfort when under way, the helmsman has an

The importance of a side door to the lounge shouldn’t be underestimated as it considerably eases movement around the vessel, especially when mooring.

The interiors, all air conditioned, are quite spacious - this is thanks to the Volvo Penta IPS engines that allow for a smaller engine room - with obvious advantages for livability.

The standard layout for the sleeping area foresees two spacious double berth cabins and a functional open space galley.

The owner’s cabin has a queen size bed, ample storage space, an

The guest cabin is equipped with two single berths that can be joined to make a single queen-size bed, while the guest bathroom can also be used as a day-head.

The galley (down) is fully equipped for long cruising and comes with two electric burners, a microwave oven and ample storage space.

The flybridge version hosts a bar area with electric BBQ and refrigerator, in addition to the lounge area and the captain’s seat.

f you’ve sailed the Caribbean in recent years, you may have noticed massive amounts of brown seaweed washing up on beaches and clogging harbors.

This influx of Sargassum has caused alarm, as ecological and economic costs outweigh the potential beach nourishment and stabilization benefits associated with modest amounts of the seaweed.

For example, beached Sargassum can deter vulnerable and critically endangered marine turtles from nesting, skew gender ratios of their populations, and hinder their hatchlings’ survival. Ample mats of floating Sargassum have also proven a menace to sailors, as evidenced particularly in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.

Concerned about impacts on fishing and tourism, the twin-island country of Trinidad and Tobago has even declared the situation a natural disaster.

New findings published by Drs. Jeffrey Schell, Deb Goodwin and Amy Siuda, all oceanographers and professors at Sea Education Association (SEA), a leading undergraduate ocean education and research institution based in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, provide insight based on first-hand observations collected aboard the institution’s 135-foot sailing research vessel, the SSV Corwith Cramer.

Sargassum 101 Sargassum is a type of seaweed found globally along temperate and tropical coasts. Unique to the wider North Atlantic are Sargassum species that drift at the ocean surface in small clumps or extensive mats, creating an environmentally significant marine ecosystem in the otherwise relatively barren open ocean.

The drifting mats play many roles, including food source, nursery for juveniles, spawning ground, and protective habitat. They support diverse communities of invertebrates, fish, turtles, seabirds and other marine creatures at various points in their lives.

In June 2011, unprecedented quantities of Sargassum began washing ashore on Caribbean islands. Piles of stranded seaweed several feet thick covered once-pristine tourist beaches. The economic impacts of this inundation event drew international attention, including a story in The New York Times.

Where was all this Sargassum coming from? A compelling theory was that the Sargassum simply drifted out of the Sargasso Sea, a vast region bounded by the currents of the North Atlantic gyre and well known, as its name suggests, for harboring the seaweed.

However, satellite observations and sea surface current modeling suggested an alternate origin in the equatorial Atlantic, a region never before considered to be a source of Sargassum.

Sargassum all but disappeared from the Caribbean. However, in April 2014, another inundation was underway, rekindling the debate about the seaweed’s source location.

That’s where SEA researchers stepped in. For more than 40 years, the organization has been studying Sargassum from the platform of its tall ship research vessels. SEA’s data sets are extraordinary in that they represent the only long-term quantitative record of Sargassum abundance before and during the recent Caribbean inundation events.

Unexpected Discoveries SEA faculty, crew and SEA Semester® undergraduate students collected data to support their new findings on board the SSV Corwith Cramer from November 2014 to May 2015. Cruises began in the Canary Islands, traversed the Sargasso Sea and Western Tropical Atlantic to the Lesser Antilles, and then sailed the Eastern Caribbean before heading north to New England.

Their findings offer some surprising revelations about the latest seaweed inundation.

First, SEA researchers made a valuable discovery about the type of Sargassum flooding the Caribbean during the 2014-2015 event.

Drift Sargassum consists of two species: S. fluitans and S. natans, which are distinguished by the presence or absence of thorns on the stem. Each species exhibits a variety of blade and bladder structures that can make species identification challenging for the untrained eye.

In their latest fieldwork, SEA scientists found that a previously rare form — S. natans VIII Parr — dominated the Western Tropical Atlantic, Eastern Caribbean and Antilles Current north of Puerto Rico, and was noticeably absent from the Sargasso Sea. This distribution is significant because it confirms that the Sargassum responsible for the unusual recent Caribbean inundation event did not come from the Sargasso Sea. Second, SEA researchers were able to demonstrate that the huge amounts of Sargassum washing ashore truly were like nothing anyone has ever seen. times greater in samples collected during autumn 2014 than those analyzed during the previous 2011-2012 inundation event—and a whopping 300 times greater than that of any other autumn over the last two decades of SEA research.

Current Situation There are already signs that the most recent seaweed inundation event is coming to an end. Amid reports of clear Lesser Antilles beaches, late 2015 SEA Semester voyages in the Tropical Atlantic and Caribbean observed Sargassum structure different from the massive mats of extensively-branching, dinner plate-sized clumps of the year before. While S. natans VIII Parr abundance remained comparable to fall 2014, the seaweed appeared old – more orange in color and fragmented into small pieces. In fact, on a few occasions, SEA scientists observed seaweed groupings composed entirely of detached floats.

Still, questions remain: What triggers the start of these inundation events? When will the next event begin? What impact do these periodic events have on local fisheries, reefs, ecosystems and human activities? How do the benefits provided to marine environments and coastal communities differ between Sargassum species and forms?

Although modeling and satellite images can lend some insight, SEA scientists believe there’s no substitute for direct field observations at sea. On future voyages aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer in the Atlantic and Caribbean, you can bet that SEA researchers plan to continue gathering data about this important ecological and economic issue.

any of these seductive sites have become highly popular among European tourists who flock here, all year round, in search of mild weather, great food and much needed relaxation. Albufeira, Lagos and Portimão are among the most visited, yet there is a small enclave that is still a mystery to many: Tavira.

Its origins date back to the late Bronze Age when it became one of the first Phoenician settlements in the Iberian Peninsula. Then came the Romans who settled until the Arabs arrived and made it their home for five centuries.

During the Islamic period, Tavira, part of the caliphate of Córdoba, was known as “Tabira” meaning “the hidden.”

Remnants of this culture are still visible today in its castle walls, its architecture, the Moorish style doors with their intricate bronze knockers and the lovely rooftops.

There’s a museum -The Núcleo Museológico Islâmicothat displays artifacts like pots, tiles and utensils dating back to this period. Curiously enough, the Gothic church of Santa María do Castelo was built in the XIII century on the site of what was once a mosque.

Somewhat remote, this little piece of paradise can only be accessed by small chartered boats that can whisk you there in a matter of minutes.

Bathed by the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic, dotted with lively eateries, a well equipped camping site and quaint cottage rentals, the “ilha” (island) boasts one of the best beaches in the Algarve. Luckily, it’s surrounded by the protected reserve of Ria de Formosa so there is no threat of development on it, keeping it secluded and wild. It’s a true treasure guarded by the neighboring nature of its estuary where numerous species of wading birds, like the purple swamphen and the flamingo, as well as a stronghold of chameleons and one of the largest populations of sea horses in the world peacefully coexist. Not far, you’ll find another stunning site -The Pego do Inferno- a gorgeous waterfall that drops into a small lagoon surrounded by orange trees in nearby São Estevão.

As far as sailing, Tavira has its own marina -Clube Náutico de Tavira- where national, Iberian and European regattas have taken place as well as the Olympic class ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, which was held in 2014. Also, there’s a variety of sailing courses that are

Otro joya natural es el Pego do Inferno, una preciosa catarata que cae a un lago rodeado de naranjos en São Estevão.

For evening leisure, during the summer, Tavira’s town center lights up with free concerts in the Praça da República, antique fairs and dance venues at the Jardim do Coreto, a lovely park that runs along the river Gilão.

Lively street musicians and talented mimes entertain visitors over the ancient seven arch Roman bridge.

Along the narrow cobblestone streets, many businesses stay open until late like Muxagata, an ice-cream parlor famous for its untraditional varieties like fig and almond or crème brûlée and Casa das Portas, a charming gift shop, also sells interesting cookbooks like “A year’s cooking in the Algarve” written by English chef Joe Devine. As in most Portuguese towns, Tavira is also blessed with an array of budget friendly restaurants and outdoor coffee shops to enjoy the gentle evening breeze.

One longtime favorite café is the Arcada, a cocktail and wine bar as well, with its friendly staff and nice selection of sweet treats where you can indulge in savoring the iconic “folhado de Tavira” -a flaky pastry soaked in light syrup- and a “garoto” (expresso with a drop of milk).

If you prefer a drink, let yourself be tempted by one of their exotic cocktails like the morangoska made with vodka and fresh strawberries.

Originally, it was a getaway for members of the Russian imperial family who purchased the property back in the nineteenth century from Princess Maria Filiberta of Savoie. The estate was eventually sold in 1959 to hotelier Roberto Fernandes who commissioned renowned architect Gio Ponti to turn it into a five star resort in 1962.

Changing your mind to reveal your hidden potential Cómo cambiar la mente para revelar su potencial oculto

I

n our last edition, I wrote about the great benefits of meditation such as renewed energy, lowered stress levels, increased creativity and better focus. What if you could take these benefits one step further to transform your life by using the same brain state (theta state) as someone in deep meditation? It sounds like magic but it is absolutely possible. I have seen it within my coaching clientele.

People who have struggled with addiction to food and cigarettes have more easily released their habit with less conscious effort than in previous attempts. Those who have struggled with anxiety and depression have improved their state of mind and gone on to enjoy a better quality of life with this style of coaching.

People who have beliefs or fears that block them from success, whether in business or in their personal life, can start to access these beliefs and then literally rewire their brain to unlock a new level of “hidden” power or success.

Right now as you are reading and taking in the words of this text your brain is in the Beta state. You are able to concentrate and take in the words on the page. However there are probably several times during the day when you go into a light trance as you do things on auto pilot. Scary as it sounds you may be in some kind of light hypnosis (automatic pilot) when you are driving! There are two brain states that are conducive to this type of coaching or “change work” and they are the alpha state (the automatic pilot state) and the theta state.

The alpha state is that of relaxation and gives us access to our more creative side which includes visualization.

The second and deeper state of theta is where memories are stored, and if you can access this state true “magic” can happen to transform those deeper beliefs and/or traumas that cause the habits that are often hardest to break.

n nuestra última edición escribí acerca de los grandes beneficios de la meditación, tales como la renovación de energía, menores niveles de estrés, mayor creatividad y mejor concentración. ¿Qué ocurriría si pudiera llevar estos beneficios un paso más allá para transformar su vida utilizando el mismo estado mental (estado theta) como quien está en profunda meditación? Parece mágico pero es absolutamente posible. Lo he observado entre mis clientes de coaching.

Aquellas personas que lucharon contra una adicción a la comida o el tabaco pudieron deshacerse de este hábito con mayor facilidad y un menor esfuerzo de conciencia que en intentos anteriores.

A su vez, las que lucharon contra la ansiedad y la depresión mejoraron su estado mental y pudieron comenzar a disfrutar de una mejor calidad de vida con este tipo de coaching.

Los individuos que tienen pensamientos o temores que los bloquean y no les permiten alcanzar el éxito, ya sea en el ámbito personal o laboral, pueden comenzar a acceder a estos mismos pensamientos para, literalmente, volver a cablear su cerebro y desbloquear un nuevo nivel de poder o éxito “oculto”.

Ahora mismo mientras usted lee y asimila las palabras de este texto su cerebro se encuentra en estado Beta. Puede concentrarse e incorporar las palabras que se encuentran en la página. Pero probablemente haya varios momentos en el día en los que entra en un leve trance mientras realiza algo en piloto automático. ¡Por más escalofriante que parezca puede estar en un tipo de leve hipnosis (piloto automático) al conducir su automóvil! Hay dos estados mentales que son conducentes a este tipo de coaching o “trabajo de cambio” y son el estado alfa (el estado de piloto automático) y el estado theta.

El estado alfa es el de la relajación y nos abre a nuestro lado más creativo que incluye la visualización.

Let’s take a moment to see how this works with something like anxiety.

What is anxiety? Anxiety can be described as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. It is worthwhile here to check in to see whether the fear is rational or irrational.

What causes anxiety? Anxiety is said to be a learned behavior but can also have certain triggers: fears, phobias, stress, and depression.

Some of these are learned behaviors or have short term causes such as moving, loss of a loved one, loss of income, divorce etc.

It is important to note that there are also some biological conditions that can cause anxiety which include hypoglycemia, hyperthyroidism, and nutritional deficiency including a lack of Vitamin B. Physical aspects of anxiety may be structural or alignment based.

Many of us are only using about a third of our lung capacity which directly affects our state of mind. If we are unable to breathe deeply we naturally become more stressed. Yoga, exercise, breath work, meditation and any type of bodywork can be invaluable. Many of these practices encourage the practitioner to slow down their brain waves so that naturally the person begins to feel better.

If your anxiety is a learned behavior you can take yourself into these deeper states and access areas of the subconscious where habits/learned behaviors are formed. When our mind is quiet and our brain waves slow down (to alpha or theta) we can more easily release these unwanted behaviors, reduce stress and achieve a greater sense of wellbeing.

Interestingly most anxiety sufferers are more right brained, (more intuitive, thoughtful and with creative imagination), making this work particularly apt for this population. We just need to tap into their imagination and change the quality and direction of their thoughts with more positive suggestions to literally reboot the brain.

If you are interested in fine tuning some area of your life this style of coaching can be an extremely effective way to create change. A typical coaching session can be either in person, via Skype or even over the phone. It begins with a dialogue between the client and myself. The client will let me know what their goal is, that is, what they would like to “change” or improve upon. Once this is clarified, the client quite literally gets to sit back and relax! When the session is over the client often reports a feeling of deep relaxation and increased energy often with behavioral changes that become visible within the first 12 hours!

El segundo estado, más profundo, es el estado theta donde se almacenan las memorias. Si puede acceder a este estado puede ocurrir la verdadera “magia” para transformar esos pensamientos y/o traumas más profundos que causan aquellos hábitos por lo general más difíciles de romper.

Veamos cómo funciona esto con la ansiedad, por ejemplo. ¿Qué es la ansiedad? La ansiedad puede describirse como una sensación de preocupación, nerviosismo o inquietud respecto a un evento inminente o algo con un resultado incierto. Aquí vale la pena ver si el temor es racional o irracional. ¿Qué causa ansiedad? Se dice que la ansiedad es un comportamiento aprendido pero también puede resultar a raíz de temores, fobias, estrés y depresión. Algunos son comportamientos aprendidos o pueden surgir a causa de ciertas situaciones, que se producen a corto plazo, tales como una mudanza, la muerte de un ser amado, pérdida de ingresos, divorcio, etc.

Es importante tener en cuenta que también hay ciertas condiciones biológicas que pueden causar ansiedad, tales como la hipoglucemia, el hipertiroidismo y la deficiencia nutricional, incluyendo la falta de Vitamina B. Los aspectos físicos de la ansiedad pueden basarse en la estructura o la alineación corporal. Muchos de nosotros solo utilizamos un tercio de nuestra capacidad pulmonar, lo que afecta directamente a nuestro estado mental. Si no podemos respirar profundamente nos estresamos más. El yoga, el ejercicio, el trabajo de respiración, la meditación y cualquier tipo de trabajo corporal pueden ser de gran ayuda. Si su ansiedad es un comportamiento aprendido puede entrar en estos estados más profundos y acceder a áreas de su subconsciente donde se forman los hábitos/comportamientos aprendidos. Cuando nuestra mente está serena y nuestras ondas cerebrales bajan (a alfa o theta) podemos liberar con mayor facilidad estos comportamientos no deseados, reducir el estrés y lograr una sensación de mayor bienestar.

Lo interesante es que la mayoría de los que padecen ansiedad tienen una mayor actividad en el hemisferio derecho del cerebro (son más intuitivos, reflexivos y tienen una imaginación creativa), lo que hace que este trabajo sea particularmente apto. Tan solo debemos acceder a su imaginación y cambiar la calidad y dirección de los pensamientos con sugerencias más positivas para literalmente resetear el cerebro.

Si está interesado en ajustar algún área de su vida, este estilo de coaching puede ser una opción muy efectiva para crear el cambio.

Grilled Tuna Steak Salad Ensalada de atún fresco a la parrilla

Serves: 4 Prep time: 30 minutes Total time: 35 minutes Ingredients: 1 tablespoon Colavita Red Wine Vinegar 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil kosher salt freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon Colavita All Natural Canola Oil, plus more for grill 2- 3/4 pound Yellowfin tuna steaks, about 1 1/2” thick 1/2 lb green beans, trimmed 1/2 lb fingerling potatoes 1 jar Colavita artichoke hearts, drained 5 ounces baby arugula 1 cup Colavita Country–Style Olives, halved 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced Process: Brush a clean grill with the canola oil and preheat to high heat.

In a small bowl, whisk together the Colavita Red Wine Vinegar, Dijon mustard, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper. Slowly drizzle in the Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil and continue whisking until emulsified. Set aside.

Season tuna steaks with salt and pepper on both sides. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until browned on the outside and mediumrare in the center. Slice across the grain into 6 thick slices each.

Reduce the grill heat to medium. Place the potatoes on a large enough piece of foil to be able to seal into a pouch. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Seal the foil pouch and place on one half of the grill. Heat for about 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through. When done, allow the potatoes to cool a little and cut in half at an angle.

In a large bowl, toss the green beans with 2 teaspoons of Colavita Canola Oil and season with salt and pepper. Wrap the green beans loosely in aluminum foil and place them on the grill for about 5-6 minutes until they are slightly charred and soft.

In a large bowl, gently toss the artichoke hearts, arugula, olives and red onion with the vinagrette to lightly coat. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and pepper. Divide the salad among four dinner plates.

Arrange the green beans, potatoes, and tuna around and on top of the salad to serve.

afety on the Water - Sea-Tags™ is a Man Over Board (MOB) alarm system that works with a mobile app to notify people of a MOB situation.

All things tech continue to get smaller, and smarter at the same time.

Good news for boaters, especially when it comes to our safety.

New from our friends at Fugawi, the Sea-Tags Smart MOB wristband. A new two-part MOB alarm system that works to continuously send a signal from a smart waterproof wristband to one or more smartphones equipped with the Sea-Tags app.

Here’s how it works…

“The smart Sea-Tags wristband emits four signals per second and allows for crew to move up to 100 meters (300 feet) away in perfect conditions from the boat without triggering an alarm,” according to JonJovi Taguilaso, with Johnson Outdoors Canada (Johnson purchased Fugawi in 2016).

When a device is submerged in water, for instance when a crewmember goes overboard, the communication is lost, it will trigger an alarm and all smartphones currently monitoring it have the GPS position at the time of the incident.

Moreover, it is possible to configure the app to send a text message to an emergency contact (friend or family). If a MOB alarm is triggered, the smartphone left on board, will send an automatic text message to the emergency contact with the GPS position of the boat when the signal was lost. The emergency contact can then start calling the Sea-Tags user or contact emergency services and give them the last known GPS location.

After an alarm is triggered, the Sea-Tags app continuously displays the boat position, as well as the direction and distance that separates it from the point where the communication with the device was first lost. This is an absolute must-have for solo-sailors.

The app also includes a manual MOB alert and allows the user to easily contact emergency services. Sea-Tags wristbands cost $79 and the mobile app for iOS or Android is free.

unflare, a Los Angeles startup, is the first company to successfully mass produce flexible, light, affordable CIGS* solar panels.

In case you are new to solar tech, CIGS flexible panel technology is lightweight, malleable, unbreakable, and wind resistant. They are great for high wind areas, as their flat installation does not increase the wind load.

Compared to crystalline Silicon, Sunflare’s flexible panels are lighter in weight as they do not use a glass base and have thinner layers of semiconductors. Sunflare panels don’t require an aluminum frame to mount, which makes it easier for marine applications, even bimini tops. In addition, these solar cells have a low temperature coefficient enabling them to generate more power in hot conditions, like in the tropics. According to the solar startup Sunflare’s founder, Len Gao, “the panels can be secured to any surface with a special double-sided tape,” and are flexible enough to conform to curves in applications
