Behind the scenes of a Boat Show

B

oat shows are some of the most exciting times for those in the yachting community. A chance to see the newest models, technology and some familiar faces. We visited the Miami Boat Show and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, some of the largest in the world, to get a little behind the scenes of what it takes to put these fantastic venues together. Kat Quinn, owner of The Kat Agency, is CEO of a large staffing company, and has been a part of these boat shows for the last eight years. Quinn has worked for companies we all know and love, such as Sunseeker, Sanlorenzo, Edmiston and more by providing trained and experienced personnel to help represent these companies that travel from all over the world. When asked how far in advance Quinn has to prep for boat shows, she responded, “There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to plan for a boat show. Boat show planning starts months in advance, 4 months to be exact. For example, the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is in November, we start planning in July. The Miami Boat Show is in February and usually utilizes the same talent, clients, and wardrobe so we usually immediately re-book after Fort Lauderdale, and plan logistics in January. Similarly, Palm Beach Boat Show is right after Miami and not much

planning is involved - everything gets carried over from show to show. Fort Lauderdale definitely sets the stage!” For those that have attended a boat show, they can attest that the staff and setups for some brands are seamless and cohesive. This is done because of staffing agents such as Quinn, whose job is also to make sure the brands, outfits, anything that is seen at the event, matches and is in line with the companies’ image. Besides creating a stunning visual presence for boat show goers, the staff at these events can completely change how guests experience a show. Quinn said, “If I had a dollar for every time I have seen a guest literally walk straight off the dock and fall into the water, or watch a guest get arrested on the stand in Miami... These crazy stories and experiences led me to realize truly how important the yacht and lounge talent are on a stand. We help guests, we look out for them, we make them feel at home on the stand no matter what is going on around them. Without yacht hosts/hostesses at the show, it would be mayhem - shoes and drinks on yachts, people tripping and falling all over the place, walking in the wrong direction and losing bags/shoes. We once had a guest forget where he valet’d his Ferrari, and on top of it, he couldn’t remember which of his Ferraris he drove that day - the red one or yellow one!? We had to help him call the different valets along Collins Avenue to get his car back for him - and we did.” Needless to say, boat shows are some of the most fun events for those in the yacht industry and a lot of planning and staff goes into each of these events, to make sure guests have the most pleasant experience. iLearntoBoat.com to Release Fully Interactive Boat Safety Course in Q1 2018 F

or years, online boat safety course content has been limited to video, illustrations, and text material. Beginning in March 2018, boaters looking to complete their online boating education will have a new alternative, as iLearntoBoat.com releases its new, fully interactive boat safety course. This groundbreaking course is the first boater safety course of its kind to be approved by state and regulatory agencies. “As successful as online boating safety education has been, the fact is that over half of the students who sign up for an online course never complete it,” said Edward Cossette, VP of E-Learning. He further added, “We wanted to create an interactive course that not only makes it easier for students to learn and retain what they’ve learned long term, but we also want to try to reach and appeal to more students than ever before. We believe that this course accomplishes these goals.” In the game, the student player goes on a boating adventure with 4 friends. The friends have varying degrees of boating experience, with each of them demonstrating different personality traits—human traits— both good and bad. Through these four characters, the student explores, searches, and investigates to solve the mystery presented in the game. While the student player interacts with the game, the four friends— through their actions and dialog—help the student player learn various boating concepts. The interactive course covers state legal requirements and safe boating practices. Students can learn safe boating skills, such as casting off and docking, traffic laws of the water, state-specific rules and regulations, how to deal with emergencies, and much more, by taking this course. Students can complete the interactive course at their own pace, starting and stopping at their convenience. Most students can complete the story within a few hours. After printing out their certificate, students can legally operate a boat or a personal watercraft. Temporary boating certificates are valid until the end of the calendar year in which the course was completed. The interactive course has been developed in conjunction with the boating safety agencies responsible for boater education in states and provinces and is pending approval by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). cean Reef Islands is the first private residential community built on two artificial islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is located across the coast of Panama city, the first project of its class in Latin America. It will provide 2 helicopter pads, a marina for 200 boats of different sizes and a yacht club. Both residents and club members will have access to a marine supply store, a gas station, snorkeling activities and equipment rentals. The marina will open in 2019 and F3 Marina will be in charge of administration.

The evolution of traveling on the sea W

hen visiting the remote island paradise of Bora Bora, one expects peace and tranquility, and not to be awaken by the smells and engine roars of passing boats at 5 O’clock in the morning. This is the time when the daily boat traffic starts and transforms the tranquility of an overwater bungalow into a noisy boat highway. The idyllic island of Bora Bora has more than 50 outboard and diesel powered excursion and shuttle boats that need to be fed with more than 2 million liters of imported fuel, every year. Luckily, the Ministers of French Polynesia are setting fresh objectives by introducing a fully sustainable alternative under a privileged tax exemption: the SoelCat 12, a fully solar electric boat designed by Soel Yachts. The electric catamaran takes their guests on a truly sustainable and noise-free tour in the lagoon. The first SoelCat 12, which is called ‘Okeanos Pearl’ is a cooperation project between Soel Yachts, the Okeanos Foundation for the Sea and the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort. Together they boost the meaning of sustainable sea transport with unique PR values for the destination. The Pearl Beach Resort sets a pioneering example for the worldwide tourism industry, by introducing a new experience on the water and a new definition of true eco-tourism! Mobile power The silent electric boat turns into a powerful grid-feeding station, whenever the passenger vessel is not in use for solar cruising. Up to four households can be supplied with 15kVA of inverter power from the SoelCat 12. This enables the resort for example to use the solar electric boat to power their desalination plant: the power from the SoelCat 12 can produce up to 4000 liters of fresh water every hour. A smart

From the first line drawing, every aspect of the solar electric boat has been designed for its purpose: efficient solar electric propulsion. The same approach is used by Tesla for its electric cars: “one cannot just take any existing hull shape, add an electric motor and hope that it achieves a range of 150 nautical miles” explains Linda Brembs, managing partner at Soel Yachts. With its efficient hull lines, the SoelCat 12 requires only 2.17kWh of battery capacity per nautical mile. When compared to the specific energy density of gasoline, the boat’s consumption would be the equivalent of only 0.22L of gasoline per nautical mile. With a battery capacity of 120 kWh, the SoelCat 12 offers a range of 60 nm at 8 knots, and this is even without the need for any sunshine. Once the sun starts to shine the vessel’s cruising speed of 8 kts is prolonged to 8 hours. Lowering the speed to 6.5 kts results in a 24-hour range. The integrated boost mode allows higher speeds and lets the electric boat quickly accelerate to 14 knots. The solar electric boat is designed to be demountable, like an Ikea furniture piece. This makes it possible to have the SoelCat 12 shipped at very affordable rates to every destination around the world, where it can be reassemble by a local crew. Vast Deck Space The wow factor begins right as you board from the dock. Due to the open design, the aft swim platform must do triple duty. First, it serves as a beach club that can be populated with loose deck furniture and even a pop-up shower. Next, a 50 square-foot section of this teak-clad platform lowers hydraulically into the water with integrated steps easing the way up and down. Finally, this space serves as an open garage, able to carry a Williams Jet tender and

here’s always a bit of trepidation that comes with innovation. Doubts swirl about when it comes to building something new. Will it work? Will the market accept it? Will it be too radical a departure from what we’re already offering? These questions must have been top-of-mind with Massimo Perotti and his team at San Lorenzo as they contemplated (and quietly designed) the new SX88 that debuted in Miami earlier this year. Dubbed a “crossover”, the new concept is midway between an explorer yacht and a flybridge cruiser. The design is a collaboration in many ways with engineering done by ex-Olympic sailor Luca Santella, hull lines drawn by American naval architect Lou Codega and a refreshing interior envisioned by designer Piero Lissoni. If the finished product doesn’t snap your head around, nothing will.

one or two PWCs. The really sexy thing is the way these toys reach the water: The aft sections of the hull have distinguishing arched rails on either side that add to the swanky lines. But the port side rail serves as convincing camouflage for a 2,000-pound, 10-foot swinging davit that literally does all the heavy lifting. This keeps the foredeck clear and available for an enormous lounge and sunpad where you could almost play tennis. If the aft deck doesn’t get your attention, the flybridge will. Constructed in part of carbon fiber to reduce weight, the flybridge carries the only helm station aboard, tucked into the starboard forward corner. A proper command pod, this station took a bit of creative engineering including the wrap around window that lowers hydraulically for an open-air feel, or raises when it’s time for climate

CROSSING OVER San Lorenzo SX88 Makes a Splash El San Lorenzo SX88 causa sensación

control. This 10-foot section of glass is a mechanical marvel that serves to connect all those aboard with the environment in a most impressive and yet unobtrusive way. Open Interior The idea of an open concept with combined multi-use interior spaces is nothing new in the way we live on land, but aboard boats, walls still proliferate. Lissoni changed all that by creating a cavernous main deck where sightlines stretch from the reverse forward windshield all the way back to the open aft deck. Floor-to-ceiling windows on the sides add to the nearly uninterrupted views all around. Walls are few and corridors are no more. Even the floating central staircase that leads to the flybridge is made up of cantilevered steps encased in glass. Furniture is free-standing so it can be rearranged and the galley on the starboard side may be moved or extended as necessary. Although all accommodations thus far have been tucked one level lower, an owner’s suite may be added on the main deck, giving its occupants phenomenal views out over the bow and beyond. Because the SX88 (like most San Lorenzo models) is highly customizable, the layout and finishes inside are a matter of personal preference. Most styles are likely to feature natural fabrics, stone surfaces, dark wood and a generous use of brushed stainless steel accents and Carrara marble. A Beast Below As sophisticated and evolved as the SX88 is above, it’s a beast below. She carries three Volvo Penta IPS 1050 (800 hp) diesels with pod drives so no rudders or thrusters are required for precision maneuvering. Designed to live somewhere between planing and displacement, the hull has well defined chines, some leading all the way aft. The target top speed is 23 knots. She’ll cruise nicely at 17-18 knots and at 12 knots, she has a 1,000 nautical mile range. A Good Thing San Lorenzo owner, Perotti, must have breathed a sigh of relief when 11 orders were booked (each at $6 million+) even before hull number one splashed in the Med. By the time hull number 2 crossed the Atlantic, a healthy buzz had developed around the design and the rest is history since other lengths of the concept (including a 72-footer) are already on the drawing board. Sometimes the butterflies of trepidation in your stomach are just an indication that something really good is about to happen. Bravo, San Lorenzo.

anyons more massive than the Grand Canyon. Mountains that rival the Rockies in size. You’d think that formations of this stature would be well known, like New England’s White Mountains, yet they are largely untouched and completely hidden from view: I’m talking about the New England Canyons and Seamounts, ancient gorges and elevations located underwater about 150 miles off the coast of Cape Cod – and now, the site of the first Marine National Monument in the Atlantic Ocean! Three massive undersea canyons (named Oceanographer, Gilbert, and Lydonia) and four seamounts (named Bear, Physalia, Mytilus, and Retriever), some with peaks rising more than 7,000 feet above the ocean floor, exist where the continental shelf drops into the pitch-black abyss of the deep Atlantic Ocean. Such grand landscapes have been preserved across our nation for over a century, yet the era of Blue Parks – preserving those most important and dynamic places in our oceans – is just beginning. These mysterious ocean places in New England continue to reveal their incredible diversity, and amazingly, new marine species are uncovered during every expedition. Already, more than 320 marine species have been identified in the canyons and another 630 within the seamounts.

Coldwater Coral When most people think of coral, they imagine tropical coral in warm-water areas. But corals can also thrive in deep, cold-water areas, like they do within the New England Canyons and Seamounts. Many of these coral formations take centuries to grow, and some are the size of small trees. The coral formations and the unique geography of the Canyons and Seamounts provide the ideal conditions for a wealth of marine life to thrive. Ocean currents driven by these underwater features create a concentration of plankton, squid, and forage fish that in turn attract endangered whales and other migratory species as they seek bountiful food sources.

From the extreme depths of the seafloor along the canyons, to beyond the highest peak all the way to the surface, the Canyons and Seamounts need full protection for the vast array of unique marine life that call these places home. Under threat from human impacts like increased shipping activities, industrialization, and development efforts like cabling, sand and gravel mining, and offshore oil drilling, permanent protection for these critical ocean areas is needed now more than ever before. Commercial fishing, while small in scale, further threatens the ancient coral formations, which are highly sensitive to human disturbances, and can take centuries to rebuild – if they can rebuild at all. While the effects of climate change on our world’s ocean remains un-

clear, there is a growing consensus that preserving intact habitat areas rich in biodiversity is one of the best ways we can make our oceans more resilient to climate change. It is more important than ever to set aside marine areas that are free from human impact to learn more about the ocean and how we can best respond to these changes. Preserving an Ocean Legacy In New England, the ocean has, and always will, play a major role in our region’s cultural heritage. It is the backbone of many of our most lasting traditions, foods, and recreational activities. A healthy ocean is not only important to these traditions, but it is also a major driver of the local and regional economy. Ocean resources support more than 230,000 jobs and $16 billion in economic activity in New England coastal states. Most of this economic activity comes from ocean tourism and recreation by tourists and coastal

residents, with some also coming from direct commercial activity on the water and shoreside support. Ensuring a healthy ocean in New England is important for this entire ecosystem – humans included. Healthy ocean habitats provide reliable feeding grounds for whales, dolphins, and seabirds. And when these populations thrive, our region’s tourism-driven economy thrives, too. The opportunity to permanently protect special places that contribute to sustaining a healthy ocean is ongoing, and will only grow in importance as the ocean faces warmer temperatures and changing conditions. In August of 2016, Senator Richard Blumenthal led the entire Connecticut congressional delegation in calling upon then President Obama to designate the Canyons and Seamounts a Marine National Monument, showing leadership for our ocean. Then, President Obama announced the expansion of Papahnaumokukea Marine National Monument off the coast of Hawaii, creating the world’s largest marine reserve. he Inner Hebrides boast some of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland:, quaint harbors kissed by chilly Atlantic waters, towering cliffs, emerald green valleys and superb scenic trails. Scattered crofts peek from hills speckled with blackface sheep and highland cows. Skye’s seductive sights are to be taken in slowly, breathing in the fresh moist air, letting the crisp breeze tease your senses. On Skye’s west coast, the crystal clear Fairy Pools, that lie along the Brittle river, offer stunning views with every step you take up its gorgeous two mile path. Up north, in the Trotternish peninsula, stands the commanding Old Man Storr with a long trail leading to a spectacular pinnacle that can be seen for miles. Overlooking the northeast coast, you’ll find the luxurious Flodigarry Hotel, a former hunting lodge that has been welcoming guests for a peaceful getaway since 1928. But Skye wasn’t always peaceful. First it was invaded by the Vikings in 794 AD until it was taken over by the Scots in 1266 during the battle of Largs. Later, like the rest of the highlands, the island fell prey to the XIX century clearances when locals were violently forced out of their homes to give way to sheep rearing. John Prebble’s book The Highland Clearances is a riveting account of this arduous time in Scottish history. Skye’s capital, Portree, is a lovely harbor of colorful houses and dreamy sunsets. A quaint fishing town that is home to some fine dining like Scorrybreac. An intimate dining room where you’re warmly welcomed by Niall

As you leave the island, you’ll come across the gorgeous XIII century Eilean Donan Castle before heading southeast towards Loch Ness, where you’ll find Urquhart castle, a structure over 1000 years old. The scenery is breathtaking and it’s no wonder there is a legend about this lake. Just one look can trigger your imagination to believe anything could happen here. Its muddy waters, surrounded by forest covered mountains, make for a

The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery showcases ancient Pictish stones and contemporary Highland art. A charming Victorian indoor market with its cast iron and wooden dome roof is a must see. Right outside the city you’ll find the famous battlefield of Culloden where the Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end in 1745. A stunning site with a visitor’s center where, through immersion cinema, you can experience what it was like to be there during the fight between the Scottish and British armies. As far as dining, Inverness has plenty of good choices with Rocpool being a favorite. A modern restaurant that renders an array of entrées from fresh seafood like the perfectly roasted Shetland halibut or the succulent Scottish beef accompanied by a fantastic wine list. From the heavenly bread, served promptly as you’re seated, to the last bite of the delightful lemon meringue pie, Rocpool makes for an extraordinary dining experience. For luxurious accommodation, not too far north from Inverness, stands the Kingcraig Castle Hotel, home for generations to the MacKenzie clan. Situated on 10 acres of beautiful highland countryside , this retreat also

The cozy lounge, with its country house manor feel is perfect for an afternoon drink. As you follow A9 north, along the coast, you’ll pass the Glenmorangie distillery and the picturesque town of Dunbeath where acclaimed poet Neil Gunn was born. “Knowledge is high in the head but the salmon of wisdom swims deep” (The Green Isle of the The Great Deep). In about two hours, you’ll arrive in remote John O’Groats, the northernmost point of mainland Britain. A tiny hamlet that sits on the edge of the Pentland firth, brushed by wild winds, roaring waves and spectacular views of the dramatic Scottish shoreline, which you can enjoy, in private, from the glass-front cottage rentals by Natural Retreats. Only four miles down the road, you’ll find Gills Bay for a ferry ride to the Orkney isles. “Always by the shore, Kirk and kirkyard. If you’re realistic with regards to the weather, you’ll soon discover that the essence of Orkney’s magic hides in the misty air that wraps these lovely islands that are bathed in Nordic history. The Vikings settled in the 9th century until 1496 when King James III of Scotland married princess Margrethe of the dual kingdom of Norway and Denmark. As her dowry, her father King Kristian, pawned Orkney to the Scottish crown until he could pay a lump sum of 60,000 florins. He was never able to raise all the cash so the islands became part of Scotland. Once the ferry lands in St. Margaret’s Hope, you’ll have to drive through several small isles to get to the main island. Just a few miles in, you’ll come across a snippet of Orkney’s important history: the causeways that link the islands known as the Churchill barriers, built by order of the former British prime minister for protection from the Germans during World War II. Right by one of the barriers, lies a shipwreck and soon after, on Lambholm, you’ll find a small church assembled with two Nissen huts: The Italian Chapel, created by Italian POWs who were brought to Orkney to build the barriers. These islands are steeped in history. On their sandy shores, rolling hills and ample fields hides the intriguing past of their earlier inhabitants dating back to the Neotlithic era. You can see remnants of their civilization at Skara Brae where settlements have remained almost intact for over 5000 years. And, of course, like elsewhere in Scotland, there’s a fair share of whiskey distilleries. At Highland Park, some delicate 10-year-old and 12-year-old single malts can be sampled during an engaging tour of the premises , where whiskey has been made since 1798 or even before. The “since” date refers to when they started paying taxes but like most distilleries in Scotland, whiskey has been produced for a lot longer with the earliest record being 1494. As far as accommodation, the family-run Kirkwall Hotel stands out for its warm hospitality. An old Victorian structure with beautiful tartan carpeted stairs that lead up to well fitted and comfortable rooms, some with lovely harbor views. The hotel’s restaurant is a reminder of a bygone era of sumptuous decor: paneled ceilings and velvet drapes that frame the large windows facing the

harbor. A great menu of local specialties such as seafood - fantastic crab cakes - and local meats -delicious lamb roast- as well as generous breakfasts were exquisite and well priced. Nearby Victoria street is lined with charming shops like Orkney Tweed that sells a beautiful selection of wool hats, blankets and handbags. Southwest of the mainland, lies Stromness where poet George MacKay Brown was born. Right across his house, stands the Stromness Museum which showcases objects salvaged from the German high sea fleets scuttled in Scapa Flow right after World War I. The Piers Art Center exhibits modern creations by mostly young local artists. Julia’s café, a quaint little eatery by the harbor, is ideal for lunch or a snack of tasty salmon cakes and locally brewed Puffin ale. As in most small towns in Britain, nothing much happens after 5 pm. Stores close and only a few pubs and restaurants remain open for evening entertainment. Gladly, one great option is Wrigley and the Reel in Kirkwall, a music school and café bar, run by the Wrigley sisters, where live music is played, some nights, until 10 pm. Also, the Foveran, a fantastic family-run restaurant with rooms located right outside Kirkwall, serves homemade bread, locally sourced entrées like scallops

s summer begins to approach and the temperatures rise, some of us will naturally begin to eat less. To stay in tune with the changing of the seasons, you might want to consume less of the heavy foods that may be more appealing in the cooler temperatures such as meat, eggs, nuts and excesses of grains, and start to enjoy the abundance of brightly colored fruits and vegetables that come into season. Many of us are naturally drawn to add more greens and salads (raw foods) into our diet. Eating more green foods is a good idea but do you know why? Leafy greens, in particular, are high in chlorophyll which helps to cleanse and alkalise the body, keeping your pH in balance. Most of us are more acidic than alkaline and the more acidic we are, the quicker and easier it is to fall prey to what are now becoming common ailments like arthritis, muscle pain, fatigue, cancer, heart-

burn, allergies, high blood pressure etc. It is becoming more accepted amongst both alternative and allopathic health circles that simple habits like adding a juicing protocol or eating more nutrient dense foods can dramatically change the way we feel and may turn around illness and disease. As a nutritionist and lifestyle coach, I have heard many stories of people overcoming allergies, skin complaints and sometimes even cancer by juicing and/or eating more raw food, and generally eating more of a “clean diet”. (If your body type does better with cooked foods - then lightly cooked vegetable soups would be more appropriate here). When I first started teaching nutrition I was surprised to find how many people thought that they were eating healthy foods because they were labeled “healthy”, “high in fiber” or “low in sugar” but


in reality, if you learn to read the labels of most store bought, ready made foods, you’ll see that they are typically high in sugars, artificial additives and poor quality fats. If you must buy ready made foods, try to avoid those with common problematic ingredients like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, food colorings and msg. For example, many people know that high fructose corn syrup is particularly prolific in beverages such as sodas and flavored coffees but did you know that it’s also found in a high percentage of the breads sold at your regular supermarket, as well as in ton of other foods that you will probably be surprised about? It is also one of the causes of our growing obesity problem not only because of the supersized, unlimited refills of soda that we are offered in restaurants (which dilutes the digestive juices in the stomach) but also due to its ability to switch off the leptin hormone which tells us when we are full and satiatie

If we take something like sugar, the (generous!) recommended upper limit of intake is only around 1.5 teaspoons per day but even something as commonplace and “healthy” as a bottle of orange juice may have 48 grams - this is nearly 10 teaspoons of sugar in a 16 oz serving of juice!!! Try eating the whole fruit this summer rather than drinking the juice unless it is freshly made. Good choices are cooling fruits such as apples, watermelons, lemons and limes. Cooling vegetables include most leafy greens, cucumbers, tomatoes and sprouts. Basil Gelato with Grilled Stone Fruit Helado de Albahaca con fruta a la parrilla

Serves 6 Prep Time: 10 minutes plus at least 2 hours refrigeration time Cook Time: 20 minutes cooking, plus 20 minutes mixing time Ingredients: 2 cups basil leaves, chopped 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream ¾ cup sugar 6 egg yolks 4 Peaches or stone fruit of your choice Colavita Extra Virgin Olive oil for brushing on fruit Process: Whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar and egg yolks. In a saucepan add mixture with chopped basil leaves. While stirring over heat, bring mixture to 175 °F. The mixture will thicken and coat the back of a spoon. This will take about 20 minutes. Strain basil out of the mixture into a bowl. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap, making sure that the wrap touches the mixture so that there is no air between the mixture and the wrap. Refrigerate the mixture for at least 2 hours or overnight. Mix gelato according to manufacturer’s instructions of your ice cream maker. Slice fruit and brush with Colavita Extra Virgin olive oil. Grill the fruit until it becomes soft and the sugars become caramelized. Scoop gelato into serving bowls and add fruit on top. Garnish with some fresh basil. | 60 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

Tiempo de elaboración: 40 minutos Ingredientes 2 tazas de albahaca picada 2 tazas de leche entera 1 taza de crema 3/4 taza de azúcar 6 yemas de huevo 4 melocotones o albaricoques Proceso Bata la leche, la crema, el azúcar y las yemas. Caliente en un cazo con la albahaca picada. Mientras lo remueve, permita que la temperatura alcance los 175 °F. Una vez que obtenga la consistencia necesaria para cubrir la cuchara - unos 20 minutos -se ha de pasar por un colador. Cúbra la mezcla con plástico de manera que la toque para evitar que se atrape aire entre esta y el plástico. Refrigerar durante 2 horas o toda la noche. Bata el gelato según las instrucciones de su máquina. Corte la fruta en tajadas y unte con el Aceite de Oliva Extra Virgen Colavita. Sharkbanz

ould a $70 wristband really provide protection from some of the most feared predators of the ocean? Sharkbanz — uses a magnetic field to repel sharks by disrupting their electro-receptors, which they use to figure out what’s around them. Tested on up to 10 species of sharks, including the reef and bull shark (but not the great white), Sharkbanz claims to “increase the chance of survival” of the casual swimmer or beachgoer “quite a bit”. The first version of Sharkbanz (V1 was released in January 2015, and since then the company has been committed to four principles that make Sharkbanz technology right for just about anyone, whether you live by the ocean or only visit a few times a year: it’s effective, simple, affordable, and stylish. Sharkbanz creator Nathan Garrison said when sharks came into contact with the device during test trials, they looked ‘like [they] were going to investigate, but then [they] bolted’. “We did this seven to eight times in an hour, and the shark would take off, full speed, every time.” As an ambush predator, which attacks from a long distance and at high speed, the great white shark is the only species the band claims to be “ineffective” against. According to the FAQs page on the Sharkbanz website, “This technology has been tested on most common predatory sharks, including Bull, Blacktip, Oceanic Whitetip, small Tiger, Nurse, Lemon, Caribbean Reef, and Bonnethead.” *Note from the scientists: official research tests showed that

Nurse sharks are bottom feeders and use their electrical sense much less than most predatory species, instead relying on their keen senses of sight and smell. They will bite if severely provoked, but are otherwise docile. Do not attempt to “test” Sharkbanz when diving with nurse sharks, as you may provoke the animal.” Giving Back As Garrison says, “It is our hope that this new technology encourages coexistence with all of its creatures, promotes marine education and fosters a greater appreciation for the big blue. The future is our responsibility.” You may have recently read that the results of a three year mapping effort by international scientists, was just published in the journal Scientific Reports. A team of scientists from the Ocean Cleanup Foundation, based in The Netherlands, said the debris field, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, covers about 618,000 square miles of deep ocean and weighs 80,000 metric tons. It is the largest accumulation of ocean plastics on Earth, and a serious threat to both marine animals and people. That’s because eating plastic, which contains several harmful chemicals, can be toxic, so the birds and fish that eat it and the humans who, in

Sharkbanz is donating 3% of profits to shark and ocean conservation groups with targeted efforts to pass legislation and affect measurable, positive change on our world’s oceans. “We like our toothy aquatic neighbors,” says Garrison, “but just prefer they keep their distance.” Here’s how it works Designed for beachgoers, swimmers and surfers, Sharkbanz uses patented magnetic technology developed by marine biologists to deter predatory shark species. They have a depth rating to 200 meters and a range of 1-2 Meters (3-6 Feet). FYI: Sharkbanz technology can harm electronic devices, including electronic scuba equipment, and should be kept at least 12 inches (30cm) away from these devices. If you are handling electronic equipment while diving, they suggest placing Sharkbanz on your ankles to avoid direct contact with the electronics. The company’s website has plenty of videos showing how they tested Sharkbanz and some good testimonials of users who escaped scary shark encounters. I like the idea of a deterrent, almost like a mosquito repellent, because it doesn’t hurt the shark. Perhaps this technology could be expanded to include whales, with the end result of fewer collisions with ships.
