THE FESTIVAL The XJAZZ Festival is the „different“ Jazz Festival in Berlin. A Festival that strives to cross boundaries, merging Jazz with other musical styles such as Electronic, African, and Neo-Classical music. Through its both modern and unconventional marketing, the festival has managed to reach a far bigger and younger crowd than comparable festivals. With 70 shows in 11 different venues, and 12,500 spectators, the festival is clearly the biggest Jazz festival of Berlin. 4

We define Jazz, more as a musical approach than a pre-defined aesthetic. For us the idea of Jazz means exploration, spontaneity, and interactive groove. Opening the Jazz spectrum to, say, improvised electronica or minimalist classical music, we can encourage Jazz and its continued influence on all forms of contemporary music. This concept is helped by a younger generation, who find an open approach that is far less academic and elitist, breathing life into and refreshing the whole musical genre. Our festival programming puts a strong emphasis on contrasting and unknown elements. At XJAZZ it’s not an uncommon sight: techno club kids and a trad-jazzheads sitting together, transfixed by a Berlin Improv-trio. Berlin is one of the biggest cultural hubs in the world. XJAZZ strive to represent the unique, ever-changing scene of this diverse city. Many national and international artists have chosen Berlin as their home. That makes it possible to program an intimate yet international festival, where the artists can even bicycle to their own shows.

Iceland and Israel have been previous partner countries in our festival. We created shows bringing musicians and culture from our partner countries, alongside natives of these countries already living in Berlin. With both partner countries we actively encourage exchange: XJAZZ Fe tival Reykjavik, and XJAZZ Festival Tel Aviv- happening in November 2015. 5

LOCATIONS The core of the festival is clustered in Kreuzberg: at least 10 venues are all less than 100 meters from each other. XJAZZ festival takes place in some of the most well recognized venues in Berlin: Watergate, Lido, BiNuu, and Privatclub, all widely known as indy and electronic music hotbeds. Besides offical clubs, the festival also takes place at one-off locations like Emmaus Church or the new food/culture hub Neue Heimat. These are unusual places for Jazz music, helping create that special vibe of XJAZZ festival. Combined with a series of free-entry concerts (OFFJAZZ) at cafes situated between the official clubs, the whole Skalitzer Strasse turns into a street festival. 6
