MICHEALS’ MEMOIRS November 2012 Update
Dear Friends and Family, The fiscal year for Wycliffe is over and this means we add up the results of our recruitment work with Wycliffe USA. We praise the Lord that He has blessed our work and Chuck worked with 20 people who join Wycliffe as new missionaries this fiscal year! Several joined as Bible translators and the rest of the people joined as support workers doing work as a manager or administrator. Most are moving to overseas assignments once they raise their needed financial support. Barb’s GET Global teams were also a great success. As in past years, she planned trips to Guatemala and Papua New Guinea. What does this all mean? More Bible translation projects have been started and existing projects have been better supported. One of the students who went on the GET Global trip to Papua New Guinea (PNG) was Danielle Jennings, a 21-year-old Lee University student from Bel Air, Md. She was part of a group of seven young women and three GET Global leaders who visited the PNG village of Lavege in the West New Britain province of Papua New Guinea. This was the same village our family visited in 2000 for the dedication of the Mangseng New Testament and where Old Testament translation work is starting. As part of the translation process, GET Global group members took newly translated verses around to villagers to make sure they could easily understand them. Danielle said she will never forget talking to an elderly woman who had happy tears streaming down her face because a particular verse was especially meaningful to her.

“Seeing them hear the Psalms for the first time was an unbelievable experience,” she said. Danielle said it was very hard to leave the village because they had built good relationships with villagers in a short amount of time. She also said she left with a new perspective on what it means to serve other people, both through her own service as well as the hospitality villagers showed to the group. Why do we continue to serve with Wycliffe and why is your partnership with us in this work so important? More than three thousand people in the Transgogol area of Madang District of Papua New Guinea who speak the Marik language can now read the New Testament Bible in their local dialect. This follows thirty six years of hard work by Wycliffe USA Bible translators Hyun-Mo & Yeon-Hee Sung.

The translated New Testament was dedicated on August 4, 2012, marked by cultural singing and dancing and choirs by the local people at Gonoa Village. The Sung’s stated after the dedication in the village that it has been a great challenge for them to translate the New Testament. They attributed the success to the Lord who enabled them to keep working and helped pushed them on to complete the translation.
For the two GET Global teams who had successful trips. Even though one team experienced an armed hold-up, no one was hurt. For those who stand with us through prayer and financial giving. Thank you!

For the Marik people of Papua New Guinea. Pray they will read the newly translated Scriptures and that God will move by His Spirit to change lives!

Our daughter Jenny and husband Kevin Struyk had a second child, a son born on April 13, 2012. Jack Adam was 6lbs. 8 oz and 19½” long. Jack is growing (see photo) and enjoying his older sister Kate who is now 2 years old. We are enjoying a second grandchild nearby! Our daughter Maria and husband Josh Mishler and their three children (Ryan, Kody and Maya) are back in the USA on a year-long furlough from Germany where they work with Wycliffe. They are living in Orlando, FL near us! We are enjoying our time with them and three more grandchildren!!! Our son Isaac and his wife Suzanne are also home on year-long furlough from Germany where they work with Wycliffe. They spent two weeks in Orlando for training and now are in Texas where Isaac is going through a master’s degree program in history so he can continue to teach Wycliffe missionary kids with Suzanne at Black Forest Academy.
