MICHEALS’ MEMOIRS

To help you grasp what your partnership with us in the work of Bible translation means, you can see how the work has grown. As we help place more missionaries overseas, old work is strengthened and new work begins!

November 2020 Update

2019 – Progress In Bible Translation Work

Dear Friends and Family, One of the things we have learned in life is that there are no closed doors to the Gospel. That is true in times of war as well as in times of pandemics. While the work at times has to take on different forms and speed, yet nothing can prevent what Christ said in Matthew 16:18b, “I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Despite the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, progress continues to be made in Bible translation work. New work is starting and work underway is finishing. The numbers of complete Bibles finished is increasing as are New Testaments and Scripture portions.

Work looks different today than it did a year ago as much of the work now happens by ZOOM or other electronic means. Thankfully, the internet now reaches some of the most remote places on earth and with these tools work can carry on. We praise the Lord for tools He has given to speed his Word!

Progress, however, is not just numbers, but also people. In April 2019, we introduced you to Jesse and Erin Atkinson. Jesse was a student at the Reformation Bible College where Chuck recruits and we helped him join Wycliffe. He met Erin, a Wycliffe member at a linguistic school as they were preparing for Bible translation work.

Since April 2019 Jesse and Erin have been working on their Biblical studies at the Reformed Theological Seminary. They recently completed their degree programs and are close to launching out to Mexico to do Bible translation work!!!

Here is what they recently wrote to us: “Back in 2016, I lived in the area to research its language and translation needs. (We thought there might be a need for a Bible translation, but weren’t sure. It turns out there’s a need for at least two separate translations.) While living there, God continually impressed upon me not only the linguistic complexity of these communities, but also their spiritual darkness. Many people still visit shamans as their main spiritual authority, and few, if any, have even heard the Gospel. It’s easy for us to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of these needs. However, I was also encouraged while brainstorming that God is at work! When my teammate and I lived there, God miraculously connected us with several Mixtec speakers who do know Christ and who want to be part of God’s Word reaching their people. Some colleagues still working nearby reported that God continues to raise up individuals with a heart for the Mixtec people from among these communities themselves and other Mexicans! They are working to share the Good News, learn the language, and establish the church in the area.”

Prayer and Praises Prayer Recruitment in a Covid-19 world has been a challenge. Few people are willing to go and many interns have had to postpone trips as travel has been impossible due to health restrictions. Pray for an end to the pandemic! Covid-19 has hit our pocketbook as our support has dropped by almost $600 per month! Pray for good months of support and ways to lessen expenses. Major vehicle repairs have hit us hard.

Praises We were able to spend time with our daughter Rachel and her husband Chris and our four grandchildren this summer! We enjoyed the time we spent with them!!! Despite Covid-19, we are still getting a few people interested in serving and doing internships. “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38)
