Un amore ripagato

It’s a long-standing love affair, the one between cinema and this city. A bond that remains solid – indissoluble, one might say. It took shape in the 1950s and strengthened on the eve of the economic boom. Just think: Trieste could count no fewer than thirty-five cinemas at the time, rising to over forty in summer with the open-air arenas scattered between the city centre and the outskirts. First-, second- and third-run cinemas testified to the Triestines’ passion for the big screen – for those films which, across genres and varying quality, restored joy and light-heartedness after the hardships of war.

And cinema, in turn, began to return that affection to the city, which soon became an intriguing location, particularly for action and espionage films. The mysterious charm of a borderland offered a uniquely atmospheric backdrop. It proved an “irresistible attraction” for screenwriters and directors alike – a fascination that continued and grew over the years. Two names above all: Giuseppe Tornatore and Gabriele Salvatores, both captivated by Trieste’s “light”, which was far more than that predictably romantic sunset slipping into the sea. They chose Trieste as an inimitable set for more than one production.

This is why IES could not fail to dedicate an entire issue to a city and a region capable of turning places and views immortalised in films and television series into tourist attractions. In these pages, you’ll find contributions from cinephiles and enthusiasts who, over the years, have transformed their passion for the “seventh art” into dedicated work within clubs, associations and institutions.

The recent awarding of the San Giusto d’Oro Prize to Trieste’s Cappella Underground is perhaps the latest and most tangible example.

Enjoy the show – after all, a happy ending is guaranteed.

È un amore di lunga data quello tra il cinema e questa città. Un legame che resta solido, indissolubile verrebbe da dire. Si è cementato negli anni ’50 e rafforzato alla vigilia del boom economico. Basti pensare che Trieste contava allora ben trentacinque sale cinematografiche che superavano la quarantina in estate, con le arene all’aperto disseminate tra centro città e periferia. Cinema di prima, seconda e terza visione a testimoniare la passione dei triestini per quelle pellicole che attraverso generi e qualità diverse tornavano a regalare, dopo le sofferenze della guerra, gioia e spensieratezza.

Ed il cinema questo amore cominciò a ripagarlo alla città, diventata ben presto intrigante location soprattutto per film d’azione e spionaggio. Il fascino misterioso della terra di confine regalava suggestioni uniche. “Attrazione fatale” per sceneggiatori e registi, proseguita e moltiplicatasi negli anni: due nomi su tutti, quelli di Giuseppe Tornatore e Gabriele Salvatores, rapiti dalla “luce” di Trieste, che non era solo quella banalmente romantica con il sole che precipita in mare al tramonto. Scelsero allora Trieste come set inimitabile per più di qualche produzione.

Ecco perché IES non poteva non dedicare una sua uscita ad una città e ad un’intera regione, capaci di trasformare luoghi e scorci immortalati in film e serie televisive, facendoli diventare attrazioni turistiche. A raccontare questo amore “ripagato” troverete in queste pagine le firme di cinefili ed appassionati che negli anni hanno rafforzato la passione per la “settima arte” con un appassionato lavoro in circoli, associazioni ed istituzioni. Il recentissimo conferimento del premio San Giusto d’oro alla Cappella Underground di Trieste è forse l’ultimo e più tangibile degli esempi.

Buona visione allora, anche perché il lieto fine… è assicurato!

IES, il cuore di Trieste

Visual arts and creativity as tools for prevention: that is the spirit at the heart of The Breastfastclub, a collective of visual-arts and communication professionals founded in Friuli Venezia Giulia in 2022. The group’s aim is to put its skills at the service of awareness-raising, highlighting the importance of breast self-examination which, alongside traditional screening, can become a valuable ally in detecting early signs of breast cancer. The collective also includes the awardwinning Triestine filmmaker Laura Samani, who explains how the first brochure, “Trattati bene”, took shape in 2024, created by photographer Anna Corai with art director and graphic designer Marco Petrucci. The small guide gently accompanies readers step by step towards a more conscious understanding of their own bodies, using accessible language and engaging imagery.

This year, thanks to the call for artists launched in 2024, illustrator and embroidery artist Goga Mason has interpreted the message through her delicate stitched works, expressing the importance of the gesture of self-examination.

Working together with photographer Elia Falaschi and graphic designer Caterina Di Paolo, she developed the new guide “Dillo a chi ami”, a collaborative project that presents prevention as a tender, poetic act woven into everyday life.

Crucial to the guide’s creation was the scientific review carried out by the Breast Unit of the Giuliano Isontina University Health Authority, with the support of LILT FVG, long committed to promoting cancer-prevention campaigns, spreading healthy lifestyles, and supporting patients and caregivers.

Thanks to the contribution of LILT – the Italian League for the Fight Against Cancer, Trieste section – which funded the printing of the guides, informational meetings will also be organised across the region to ensure widespread dissemination of prevention messages and practical guidance on awareness and self-care.

Arti visive e creatività come strumenti di prevenzione. È questo il cuore di The Breastfastclub, un collettivo di professioniste e professionisti delle arti visive e della comunicazione nato in Friuli Venezia Giulia nel 2022. L’obiettivo del gruppo è mettere a disposizione le proprie competenze per sensibilizzare sull’importanza dell’autopalpazione, che, insieme agli screening tradizionali, può diventare un prezioso alleato per individuare precocemente i segnali di un tumore al seno.

Nel collettivo figura anche la pluripremiata regista triestina Laura Samani, che racconta come nel 2024 il progetto abbia preso forma con la prima brochure “Trattati bene”, firmata dalla fotografa Anna Corai e dall’art director e graphic designer Marco Petrucci. La piccola guida con delicatezza accompagna chi legge passo dopo passo alla scoperta consapevole del proprio corpo, usando un linguaggio accessibile e immagini accattivanti.

Quest’anno, grazie alla call for artist lanciata nel 2024, è stata l’illustratrice e ricamatrice Goga Mason a interpretare, attraverso i suoi delicati ricami, il messaggio sull’importanza del gesto dell’autopalpazione. Insieme al fotografo Elia Falaschi e alla graphic designer Caterina Di Paolo, ha dato vita alla nuova guida “Dillo a chi ami”, un progetto collaborativo che comunica la prevenzione come amorevole e poetico gesto quotidiano. Fondamentale per la realizzazione della guida è stata la revisione scientifica curata dalla Breast Unit dell’Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Giuliano Isontina, insieme al supporto della LILT FVG, da anni impegnata nella promozione di campagne di prevenzione oncologica, nella diffusione di stili di vita sani e nel sostegno a pazienti e caregiver. Grazie al contributo della LILT – Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori di Trieste, che ha finanziato la stampa delle guide, verranno inoltre organizzati incontri informativi sul territorio per favorire una diffusione capillare del messaggio di prevenzione e delle buone pratiche di consapevolezza e cura. www.breastfastclub.org – www.legatumoritrieste.it

all’università – proseguita poi da Alberto Farassino, Antonio Costa, Francesco Casetti e Roberto Nepoti, hanno gettato le basi per un’esperienza ancora viva.

Da quella stagione formativa sono usciti critici, programmatori, curatori, docenti che hanno dato forma all’ecosistema culturale attuale: una generazione intera deve qualcosa a Trieste e al suo modo così puntuale di osservare il cinema. Accanto allo studio si è sviluppato il tessuto dei festival: dal Trieste Film Festival al Science+Fiction, da ShortTS a I mille occhi, insieme alle molte rassegne che si sono stratificate nel tempo trasformando la città in un laboratorio permanente di visioni, linguaggi, in comunità di spettatori. E poi c’è il fare. Le troupe che passano, le numerose produzioni che scelgono questa città per il suo profilo ambiguo, per quella luce obliqua, quasi metafisica, dechirichiana, che trasforma ogni strada in un possibile set.

Attraverso le sue attese, i margini mobili, le zone d’ombra e un’identità che sfugge alle definizioni, Trieste continua a offrirsi al cinema come uno spazio libero e audace luogo di pensiero, di pratica e lungimiranti visioni.

rieste è una città difficile da “inquadrare” in senso lato, eppure, quasi paradossalmente, ha costruito nel tempo un legame molto profondo con il cinema, l’arte di inquadrare per eccellenza. Un legame che sfiora la dimensione della mitologia, quasi quanto quello – più spesso celebrato – con la letteratura, con i fantasmi di Joyce, Svevo e Saba che ancora aleggiano tra le vie del centro.

Trieste ha una vocazione naturale per il transito. Gente che arriva, che parte, storie che si incrociano. Forse è proprio questa porosità, l’essere luogo di confine, e per di più un porto, ad averla resa, negli anni della Cortina di Ferro, scenario ideale per il cinema di spionaggio. Ma la connessione profonda tra Trieste e il cinema non è solo figlia della sua geografia. È stata, infatti, tra le prime città italiane in cui il rapporto tra pensiero e schermo si è sviluppato in modo tangibile e fertile, attraversando diverse generazioni. L’esperienza dei cineclub, il lavoro di divulgazione della Cappella Underground, la precoce intuizione di Tino Ranieri – che già negli anni Cinquanta portava lo studio del cinema

T

rieste is a city that is hard to “frame” in any sense, and yet, almost paradoxically, it has built over time a profound bond with cinema, the art of framing par excellence. A bond that borders on the mythological, almost as much as its –more frequently celebrated– relationship with literature, with the ghosts of Joyce, Svevo and Saba still drifting through the streets of the centre.

Trieste has a natural vocation for transit. People arriving, people leaving, stories crossing paths. Perhaps it is this porosity –its being a borderland, and moreover a port– that made it, in the years of the Iron Curtain, an ideal backdrop for spy films. But the deep connection between Trieste and cinema is not only the daughter of its geography. It was, in fact, among the first Italian cities where the relationship between thought and the screen developed in a tangible, fertile way, across different generations.

The experience of the cineclubs, the outreach work of La Cappella Underground, the early intuition of Tino Ranieri –who as early as the 1950s brought the study of cinema to the university– later continued by Alberto Farassino, Antonio Costa, Francesco Casetti and Roberto Nepoti, laid the foundations for an experience that is still alive today. From that formative season emerged critics, programmers, curators and academics who shaped the cultural ecosystem we now know: an entire generation owes something to Trieste and to its precise, attentive way of looking at cinema. Alongside this intellectual tradition, the fabric of festivals took shape: from the Trieste Film Festival to Science+Fiction, from ShorTS to I Mille Occhi, together with the many film seasons that have layered themselves through the years, turning the city into a permanent laboratory of visions, languages and communities of spectators.

And then there is the act of making.

The crews that pass through, the many productions that choose this city for its ambiguous profile, for that oblique, almost metaphysical, dechirichian light that turns every street into a potential set. Through its pauses, its shifting edges, its shaded corners and an identity that resists definition, Trieste continues to offer itself to cinema as a free and audacious space – a place of thought, practice and far-sighted visions.

Dal 2020 Beatrice Fiorentino è direttrice artistica e delegata generale della Settimana Internazionale della Critica della Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, di cui ha fatto parte dal 2015 come membro del comitato di selezione. È giornalista freelance e critica cinematografica; insegna Teorie e tecniche dell’audiovisivo come docente a contratto presso l’Università di Trieste. Nel 2014 ha ricevuto l’Akai International Film Fest Award come miglior critica cinematografica nel corso della 71ª Mostra di Venezia.

Collabora con altri festival e ha fatto parte di numerose giurie internazionali. È membro della European Film Academy (EFA), della International Cinéphile Society (ICS) e dell’Accademia del Cinema Italiano – Premi David di Donatello. Nel 2023 è stato pubblicato il suo volume Nuova Storia del Cinema. Dalle origini al futuro.

Since 2020, Beatrice Fiorentino has served as Artistic Director and General Delegate of the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, having been part of the selection committee since 2015. She is a freelance journalist and film critic, and teaches Theories and Techniques of the Audiovisual as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Trieste. In 2014 she received the Akai International Film Fest Award for Best Film Critic during the 71st Venice Film Festival. She collaborates with other festivals and has served on numerous international juries.

Fiorentino is a member of the European Film Academy (EFA), the International Cinéphile Society (ICS) and the Accademia del Cinema Italiano – David di Donatello Awards. Her book Nuova Storia del Cinema.

non aperte al pubblico, come il caveau della Fondazione CRTrieste dov’è stato girato il film “Diabolik” dei Manetti Bros o l’ex Gasometro, scelto da Gabriele Salvatores per “Il ragazzo invisibile 2”. “Organizziamo anche passeggiate speciali con le scuole e con le persone fragili, in collaborazione con l’Associazione de Banfield, nell’ottica dell’inclusività, perché tutti possano vivere il rapporto tra cinema e territorio in un contesto sociale e culturale, ma secondo le proprie esigenze”, continua la presidente. Per chi invece vuole esplorare la città in autonomia esiste una app (Set Discovery XR) che propone dei percorsi geolocalizzati, due sulla serie Rai “La porta rossa” e sui film di spionaggio girati a Trieste, e cinque itinerari speciali centrati sul cinema a Gorizia e Nova Gorica. Scaricata la app e giunti al luogo di partenza, in qualsiasi momento della giornata, è possibile seguire la mappa scoprendo le diverse tappe, immagini, video e ascoltando la guida direttamente dal proprio smartphone.

E al pubblico, triestino e non, si rivolgono anche le mostre realizzate da Casa del Cinema per la valorizzazione di artisti del territorio, come quelle recenti a Palazzo Gopcevich sull’attore Omero

In occasione dei 25 anni della FVG Film Commission, la Casa del Cinema di Trieste ospiterà una mostra dedicata che racconterà l’evoluzione del lavoro svolto in questi anni a sostegno delle produzioni audiovisive in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

uella fra il cinema e Trieste è una storia d’amore che dura da quando, nel 1905, fu aperta la prima sala cinematografica in città. Oggi quella passione speciale per la settima arte pulsa sotto un tetto comune a un passo dalla stazione centrale e dal mare, alla Casa del Cinema di Trieste in piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, che raggruppa le più importanti realtà cinematografiche del territorio insieme alla FVG Film Commission e alla Cooperativa Bonawentura, che gestisce nello stesso edificio il Teatro Miela.

“L’Associazione Casa del Cinema nasce nel 2009 per mettere in sinergia le associazioni di cinema a Trieste e creare un programma integrato di attività culturali, rivolte ai cittadini ma anche ai turisti”, spiega la presidente Mariella Magistri De Francesco. Uno dei progetti più importanti è Esterno/Giorno, le “Passeggiate cinematografiche” sui set triestini e regionali di fiction e serie tv, “che permette a chi viene da fuori, ma anche ai triestini, di immergersi nella realtà cinematografica da protagonista, non solo da spettatore”. Esterno/Giorno prevede passeggiate in presenza, guidate da critici ed esperti di cinema, che portano i visitatori anche in location solitamente

Insieme ai professionisti della regione vengono organizzati corsi anche molto tecnici, come quello per amministratore di set oppure per location manager.

con uno sguardo diverso sul cinema e sull’arte. L’Associazione Alpe Adria Cinema nasce nel 1989 per promuovere il cinema in particolare dei paesi dell’Europa centro orientale. Grazie al Trieste Film Festival, che si terrà dal 16 al 24 gennaio 2026 ed è diretto da Nicoletta Romeo, continua a far scoprire le cinematografie di questa parte d’Europa al pubblico triestino e internazionale.

Inoltre l’associazione mette a disposizione di studenti e ricercatori il suo archivio interdisciplinare e multimediale composto da libri, fotografie, filmati, video e 15.000 film.

L’Associazione Maremetraggio organizza invece lo ShorTS International Film Festival (prossima edizione: dal 27 giugno al 4 luglio 2026), diretto da Maurizio Di Rienzo, dedicato ai migliori cortometraggi da tutto il mondo e a masterclass, panel e incontri con i grandi protagonisti del cinema italiano. Attraverso la “ShorTS Comics Marathon”, il festival guarda anche al mondo del fumetto e promuove la diffusione del cortometraggio presso il pubblico giovane, con una sezione dedicata ai bambini e ai ragazzi. La più longeva delle associazioni di Casa del Cinema è La Cappella Underground, nata nel 1969 come uno dei primissimi cineclub in Italia e da oltre cinquant’anni sinonimo di cinefilia e passione per la settima arte. Gestisce il Cinema Ariston, spazio polifunzionale con una proposta culturale innovativa: film in versione originale, classici e rassegne, ma anche eventi, mostre, presentazioni, incontri, laboratori e una caffetteria gestita da MUG. Con la Mediateca di via Roma 19 propone proiezioni gratuite, laboratori e

La prossima esposizione sarà dedicata ai “Volti di donne” per raccontare l’autonomia delle donne triestine fin dall’inizio del Novecento: aprirà il 17 gennaio, alla Sala Sbisà in Porto Vecchio. “E poi stiamo lavorando a una mostra sulla regista Anna Gruber, sull’attrice Lidija Kozlovič e sull’attore Mario Maranzana”, anticipa Magistri, “artisti che hanno lavorato in campo nazionale conservando l’espressione massima della cultura del territorio”.

Altro obiettivo di Casa del Cinema è “condividere competenze ed esperienze per formare, anche in senso tecnologico, nuove professionalità che trovino impiego nel settore cinematografico in Friuli Venezia Giulia e non solo”, spiega Magistri. “Quattro anni fa Casa del Cinema è diventato Ente di formazione regionale dedicato al settore audiovisivo e cinematografico: organizziamo, insieme ai professionisti della regione, corsi anche molto tecnici come quello per amministratore di set, location manager, tecnico di riprese e montaggio, ma anche corsi dedicati all’intelligenza artificiale generativa”. Infine, ogni novembre, organizza il Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, il più importante evento internazionale dedicato alla fantascienza in Italia. Dal 2002 l’Associazione ‘Anno uno’ realizza invece I Mille Occhi – Festival internazionale del cinema e delle arti che esplora l’audiovisivo a 360 gradi, rimescolando le carte tra autori noti e meno noti, cinema del passato e contemporaneo. Il festival assegna anche il “Premio Anno uno” a un cineasta “del nostro tempo”, fedele alle proprie passioni e ossessioni, che spesso non ha ottenuto la dovuta attenzione dalla critica. Con un obiettivo: innovare le conoscenze e le abitudini di visione già consolidate. Nel palazzo della Casa del Cinema infine ha sede il Teatro Miela fin dalla sua apertura, nel marzo 1990 ad opera di Bonawentura. Il Miela è uno spazio artistico dinamico che ospita, nella sua variegata stagione di eventi, esperienze teatrali, musicali, cinematografiche e artistiche con l’idea di anticipare le nuove tendenze collaborando con le principali istituzioni e associazioni culturali del territorio e nazionali.

he love story between cinema and Trieste has been going strong ever since 1905, when the city’s very first picture house opened its doors.

Today that special passion for the seventh art beats under a single roof, just a stone’s throw from the central station and the sea: the Casa del Cinema in Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, which brings together the region’s most important film organisations, alongside the FVG Film Commission and the Bonawentura Cooperative, which runs the Teatro Miela housed in the same building.

“The Casa del Cinema Association was founded in 2009 to create synergy among Trieste’s film organisations and to develop an integrated programme of cultural activities for both residents and visitors,” explains its president, Mariella Magistri De Francesco. One of its key projects is Esterno/Giorno, the “cinematic walks” that explore film and TV locations in Trieste and across the region, “allowing visitors – and Triestini themselves – to dive into the world of cinema

as protagonists, not merely spectators.”

Esterno/Giorno offers in-person walks led by critics and film experts, taking participants into locations that are often closed to the public, such as the vault of the CRTrieste Foundation, where the Manetti Bros filmed “Diabolik”, or the former Gasometer, chosen by Gabriele Salvatores for “The Invisible Boy 2”. “We also organise special walks for schools and for vulnerable people, in partnership with the De Banfield Association, promoting inclusion and ensuring that everyone can experience the bond between cinema and its territory within a cultural and social context, and according to their own needs,” the president adds.

For those who prefer to explore independently, there is also an app (Set Discovery XR) offering geolocated itineraries: two dedicated to the Rai series “La porta rossa” and to the spy films shot in Trieste, and five special routes centred on cinema in Gorizia and Nova Gorica. Once the app is downloaded and you reach the starting point – at any time of day – you can follow the map, discovering the various stops, images and videos, and listening to the guide directly on your smartphone.

Casa del Cinema also curates exhibitions aimed at highlighting local artists, such as the recent shows at Palazzo Gopcevich on the actor Omero Antonutti, and “Trieste, the Time of History. The films and photographs of Francesco Penco, 1918–1950”. The next exhibition will be dedicated to “Women’s Faces”, telling the story of the autonomy of Triestine women since the early twentieth century; it opens on

“And we are working on an exhibition dedicated to filmmaker Anna Gruber, actress Lidija Kozlovič and actor Mario Maranzana,” Magistri reveals, “artists who worked on a national level while preserving the fullest expression of the region’s cultural identity.”

Another mission of Casa del Cinema is “to share expertise and experience in order to train new professionals – including on the technological side – who can find work in the film and audiovisual sector in Friuli Venezia Giulia and beyond,” Magistri explains. “Four years ago, Casa del Cinema became a regional training body dedicated to the audiovisual and film sector: together with professionals from the region, we organise highly technical courses such as those for set accountants, location managers, camera and editing technicians, as well as courses on generative artificial intelligence.” And there is important news for the coming months: “The restoration of the building will finally be completed, including the renovation of the fourth floor, which will house a space with a café serving Casa del Cinema’s activities but also open to the wider public for cultural events – or simply to read the newspaper with a view over Porto Vecchio.”

Within Casa del Cinema, the cultural organisations that make it up carry out their work every day, each offering a different perspective on cinema and the arts. The Alpe Adria Cinema Association was founded in 1989 to promote the cinema of Central and Eastern European countries. Through the Trieste Film Festival, which runs from 16 to 24 January 2026 and is directed

by Nicoletta Romeo, it continues to introduce local and international audiences to the film cultures of this part of Europe. The association also offers students and researchers access to its interdisciplinary, multimedia archive of books, photographs, films, videos and 15,000 titles.

The Maremetraggio Association organises the ShorTS International Film Festival (next edition: 27 June – 4 July 2026), directed by Maurizio Di Rienzo, dedicated to outstanding short films from around the world, along with masterclasses, panels and encounters with major figures of Italian cinema. The festival also reaches into the world of comics through the “ShorTS Comics Marathon” and promotes the shortfilm format among younger audiences, with a section dedicated to children and teenagers.

The oldest of the Casa del Cinema associations is La Cappella Underground, founded in 1969 as one of the very first film clubs in Italy and for more than fifty years a byword for cinephilia and passion for the big screen. It manages the Cinema Ariston, a multifunctional cultural venue offering films in their original language, classics and retrospectives, as well as events, exhibitions, talks, workshops and a café run by MUG. Through the Mediateca in Via Roma 19, it offers free screenings, workshops and meetings dedicated to cinema, videogames and comics. Every November, it organises the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Italy’s most important international event dedicated to science fiction.

Since 2002, the Associazione Anno uno has organised I Mille Occhi – the International Festival of Cinema and the Arts, which explores the audiovisual world in all directions, mixing wellknown and lesser-known authors, past and contemporary cinema. The festival also awards the “Premio Anno uno” to a filmmaker “of our time”, someone true to their passions and obsessions, often under-recognised by critics, with a clear aim: to challenge and refresh well-established viewing habits and knowledge.

Finally, the Teatro Miela has been based in the Casa del Cinema building since its opening in March 1990 by Bonawentura. Miela is a vibrant artistic space whose eclectic season spans theatre, music, cinema and visual arts, always seeking to anticipate new trends and working closely with leading cultural institutions and associations locally and nationwide.

La Mediateca [2] rappresenta molto più di una collezione permanente. Nata per volontà della Cappella Underground fin dal lontano 1982, dal 2016 trova spazio nella sede di via Roma 19.

Convenzionata con il Comune dal 1995, La Mediateca propone un ricco programma di proiezioni gratuite, ma anche di laboratori e incontri esclusivi dedicati al cinema. Inoltre, come il Cinematografo, offre la possibilità di prestiti gratuiti o per consultazione interna. Anche il Knulp [3], storico ritrovo di creativi in via Madonna del mare, propone una serie di proiezioni cinematografiche, con un focus sulle produzioni indipendenti e il cinema d’essai. Tuttavia, c’è sempre la necessità di controllare sul sito dell’esercizio commerciale se vi sono pellicole in programmazione.

Nel 2026 c’è un compleanno speciale in città. Si tratta dei 60 anni del British Film Club Trieste [4]. Con oltre 1500 titoli di film a disposizione nella sede di via dei Crociferi e numerosi appuntamenti organizzati in collaborazione con il cinema Ariston [5], il BFC è una vera e propria istituzione per chi ama le pellicole in lingua originale. Il Club offre nove film ogni stagione, che vengono proiettati proprio all’Ariston e provengono dalla Gran Bretagna, Irlanda e i paesi

ell’era delle serie tv e delle piattaforme digitali che da anni sono entrate nelle case a Trieste sopravvivono alcuni spazi dove la passione per il cinema resiste. La mappa dei luoghi amati dai cinefili è sparsa un po’ dappertutto, ma è il centro città a regalare le opportunità maggiori. Il fenomeno non è una novità, da queste parti. Fin dai tempi della gloriosa Cappella Underground, per non parlare della lunga lista di festival che raccontano il contemporaneo, a Trieste c’è grande fame di cinema.

Da qualche tempo all’interno di LETS [1], il museo di piazza Hortis che racconta la letteratura triestina, esiste uno spazio dove poter noleggiare e consultare i film che negli ultimi decenni hanno mostrato la città sul grande schermo.

Si chiama Il Cinematografo delle storie e opera alla stregua di una sorta di motore di ricerca, dove poter individuare film come Senilità, La ragazza di Trieste, ma anche pellicole recenti come Diabolik e La porta rossa, tra gli ultimi lavori che hanno riscosso grande successo soprattutto in televisione. È un mondo che strizza l’occhiolino soprattutto agli amanti del genere, che preferiscono supporti digitali da portare a casa e gustare comodamente in divano.

Esiste uno spazio dove poter noleggiare e consultare i film che negli ultimi decenni hanno mostrato la città sul grande schermo.

del Commonwealth. Sempre per i film in lingua inglese, l’Associazione italo-americana mette a disposizione dei propri soci una lunga lista di proiezioni in programma da questo autunno fino all’inizio dell’estate. I film verranno proiettati nelle sale del cinema Super [6], in via Paduina, ogni giovedì alle 14, alle 17 e alle 21.

Se invece la lingua preferita è il francese, ecco che spuntano gli appuntamenti settimanali dell’Alliance Française [7]. Il giorno prescelto è il martedì, nella sede di piazza Sant’Antonio 2, nel cuore del Borgo Teresiano. I film che vengono proposti provengono dalla Francia, ma anche dai territori ex coloniali (soprattutto dal continente africano). Inoltre, si può godere di pellicole girate, o che raccontano, paesi come il Canada e il Belgio, due nazioni legate a doppio filo con l’oltralpe. Anche per questa realtà va sempre controllata la programmazione della settimana.

Infine, vanno segnalati i film in lingua originale proposti da Trieste Cinema, il circuito che riunisce diverse sale di proiezione in città e che, in virtù della grande domanda del pubblico, negli ultimi anni ha scelto di offrire pellicole in altre lingue. Un modo per aumentare ancora di più l’offerta cittadina, dove la sete di cinema è davvero realtà.

n the age of TV series and digital platforms that have long since entered our homes, a handful of places in Trieste still keep the passion for cinema alive. The map of spots cherished by cinephiles is scattered across the city, yet it is the centre that offers the richest opportunities. The phenomenon is hardly new here: ever since the days of the legendary Cappella Underground – not to mention the long list of festivals dedicated to contemporary cinema – Trieste has always had a voracious appetite for film.

For some time now, inside LETS [1], the museum in Piazza Hortis devoted to Triestine literature, there has been a space where you can rent and browse films that have shown the city on the big screen over the past decades. It is called the Cinematografo delle storie and works rather like a search engine: here you can find films such as Senilità, La ragazza di Trieste, as well as more recent titles like Diabolik and La porta rossa, among the latest productions to achieve great success, especially on television. It is a world that winks particularly at genre lovers, those who prefer digital formats they can take home and enjoy from the comfort of the sofa.

The Mediateca [2] is much more than a permanent collection. Created

by La Cappella Underground back in 1982, since 2016 it has been housed in Via Roma 19. Under agreement with the Municipality since 1995, the Mediateca offers a rich programme of free screenings, as well as workshops and exclusive events dedicated to cinema. Like the Cinematografo, it also allows free loans and on-site consultation. The Knulp [3],

a long-standing creative haunt in Via Madonna del Mare, also hosts a series of film screenings, with a focus on independent productions and art-house cinema. As always, it is essential to check the venue’s website to see what is currently on.

In 2026 the city will celebrate a special anniversary: the 60th birthday of the British Film Club Trieste [4]. With more than 1,500 titles available at its headquarters in Via dei Crociferi and numerous events organised in collaboration with Cinema Ariston, the BFC is a true institution for anyone who loves films in their original English-language versions.

Each season the Club offers nine films, screened at the Ariston [5], coming from the UK, Ireland and Commonwealth countries. Also dedicated to Englishlanguage cinema, the Italo-American

Association has scheduled a long list of screenings for its members from this autumn through early summer. The films will be shown at Cinema Super [6] in Via Paduina every Thursday at 14:00, 17:00 and 21:00.

For those who prefer French, the weekly screenings by the Alliance Française [7] are the place to be. The chosen day is Tuesday, at its headquarters in Piazza Sant’Antonio 2, in the heart of the Borgo Teresiano. The films shown come from France but also from former colonial territories – especially across Africa. There are also screenings of films set in or portraying Canada and Belgium, two nations closely connected to the francophone world. Here too, checking the weekly schedule is a must.

Finally, a mention goes to the original-language screenings offered by Trieste Cinema, the network that brings together various cinemas in the city and, in response to strong audience demand, has in recent years chosen to offer films in a wider range of languages. A way of further expanding the city’s film offering – in a place where the thirst for cinema is very much real.

I

nterno giorno, interno notte… Questa storia inizia nel 1925 e in tutto questo tempo sono stati tanti i colpi di scena, proprio come nelle pellicole più avvincenti.

Il primo set di questo film immaginario è la tappezzeria artigianale di Giovanni Perizzi. Il suo lavoro incontra i primi successi a bordo del transatlantico Saturnia. Già, perché “case e navi” diventa subito l’abbinata vincente di Perizzi. Ma il tempo corre veloce e nel 1945 si cambia ambientazione: Nino e Tullio Perizzi, figli di Giovanni, inaugurano il primo negozio del marchio di famiglia per rispondere a un mercato che si evolve dopo gli anni oscuri della guerra.

Nino si occupa di arredamento e scopre e fa scoprire il design, mentre Tullio si occupa di stoffe e di navi, le leggendarie navi bianche, le impreziosisce con i meravigliosi tessuti veneziani.

Tra gli anni ‘50 e ‘60 cambiano le esigenze, l’Italia vive il suo boom e si apre la grande stagione del design tricolore. Zinelli & Perizzi diventa così il luogo privilegiato dove incontrare le nuove tendenze, con mobili, oggetti, lampade, accessori, che ormai sono entrati nella storia dell’arredamento mondiale. nterior day, interior night… This story begins in 1925, and over all this time it has seen plenty of twists, just like the most compelling of films.

The first set of this imaginary film is Giovanni Perizzi’s artisanal upholstery workshop. His work finds its first successes on board the transatlantic liner Saturnia. Indeed, “homes and ships” quickly becomes Perizzi’s winning pairing. But time moves fast, and in 1945 the setting changes: Nino and Tullio Perizzi, Giovanni’s sons, open the family’s first shop to meet the needs of a market evolving after the dark years of the war.

Nino takes care of interiors and becomes an early champion of design, while Tullio looks after fabrics and ships – the legendary white ships – embellishing them with exquisite Venetian textiles. Between the 1950s and ’60s needs change again: Italy enters its boom years and the great season of Italian design begins. Zinelli & Perizzi becomes the prime destination to discover the latest trends, offering furniture, objects, lamps and accessories that have since become part of the global history of interior design. Evergreens, much like those cinema masterpieces you’re always happy to watch again, thanks to extraordinary performers. Like a shape-shifting actor, Zinelli & Perizzi renews and transforms itself while remaining true to who it is.

The secret lies in the company’s ability to be forward-thinking and flexible – something you cannot invent but that

comes naturally when the people themselves look far ahead and know how to reinvent both the business and themselves. Nino found a young and trusted partner in Oliviero Giotto, who followed him throughout his professional life and then guided the company into the 2000s. Tullio could count on Nino Iesu – a steady hand, the operational soul of the upholstery department – and with him as many as 60 (yes, 60!) seamstresses and upholsterers who brought beauty, quality and uniqueness to countless homes in Trieste and far beyond. In 1995 Giorgio Capitanio joined the team, taking on the role once held by Iesu, later becoming part of the company’s ownership and leading a department consistently in tune with market needs – often anticipating them. There are so many collaborators worth remembering, all key protagonists in the company’s story. Mrs Annamaria – legendary for her commercial flair; she could have sold even the walls of Perizzi! The young Fabio, Guido and Ottavio who, in the enthusiasm of their early careers, produced projects and consultations brimming with ideas. And then Max, who joined the upholstery workshop at 18 and remains a cornerstone to this day, as well as the blonde Nadia, an expert in textiles alongside the young and lively Giulia. Our thanks go to everyone who has contributed to our success! From 2006 onwards, three young entrepreneurs – Luisa, Ottavio and Gianni – have taken the helm and shaped the company into what it is today, with passion and love for a brand that remains unique well into the twenty-first century. An innovative classic. A truly beautiful film!

Come un attore camaleontico, Zinelli & Perizzi si rinnova e si trasforma restando sempre se stesso. Merito della capacità dell’azienda di essere lungimirante e flessibile, qualcosa che non si inventa ma che viene naturale quando le persone stesse guardano lontano e sono capaci di reinventare e reinventarsi.

Nino ha trovato una giovane spalla in Oliviero Giotto, che lo ha seguito per tutta la sua vita professionale e che ha poi traghettato l’azienda fino agli anni 2000.

Tullio ha potuto contare su Nino Iesu, una sicurezza, anima esecutiva della tappezzeria e, con lui, fino a 60 (sì, avete letto bene 60!), tra sarte e tappezzieri che hanno messo insieme bellezza, qualità e unicità in tante case triestine e non solo.

Nel 1995 Giorgio Capitanio entra nel team nel ruolo che fu di Iesu e viene coinvolto nella compagine societaria, guidando un reparto capace di essere sempre in sintonia con le esigenze del mercato, spesso anticipandole.

Sarebbero tanti i collaboratori da ricordare, tutti protagonisti importanti della vita aziendale. Dalla signora Annamaria (mitiche le sue abilità commerciali, avrebbe venduto anche i muri di Perizzi!), ai giovani Fabio, Guido e Ottavio che, entusiasti della loro gioventù professionale, producevano progetti e consulenze pieni di idee. Senza dimenticare Max, che è entrato in tappezzeria a 18 anni ed è ancora oggi una pedina fondamentale, ma anche la bionda Nadia, esperta di stoffe insieme alla giovane e vivacissima Giulia.

Grazie a tutte le persone che hanno contribuito al nostro successo!

Dal 2006 in poi, tre giovani imprenditori, Luisa, Ottavio e Gianni, hanno preso le redini dell’azienda e l’hanno fatta diventare quello che è oggi, con tanta passione e amore per questo marchio unico anche nel ventunesimo secolo! Un classico innovativo. Proprio un bel film!

Cinefilo ateneo A cinephile university L’Università degli Studi di Trieste ha dato i natali al più antico corso di storia del cinema in Italia, avviato da Tino Ranieri, consolidato da Lino Miccichè, divenuto grande grazie ad Alberto Farassino, critico e firma di La Repubblica, che dal 1976 lo diresse per vent’anni.

Come se mancasse un’educazione allo sguardo.

Questa invece nell’Europa dell’Est c’è ed è molto forte. Proprio lì ci sono le più prestigiose Accademie ed Università di Cinema come la FAMU di Praga dove sono andati a studiare non solo cechi o slovacchi ma anche ungheresi, francesi, serbi, italiani. Se c’è una cosa che il TSFF è riuscita a fare è stato quello di sbaragliare gli stereotipi soprattutto sull’Est Europa attraverso il cinema, e grazie ad una fitta rete di eventi collaterali che spaziano dalla fotografia alla letteratura, o meglio all’arte in generale. Un modo per dire: venite qui per nove giorni e imparerete a conoscere l’Europa dell’Est. Alla 28ª edizione del Festival del Cinema Sloveno di Portorose, sei stata ospite d’onore e “Friend of Slovenian Cinema” di quest’anno. Potremmo chiamarlo Festival prossemico, visto che ci è accanto.

In cosa ci è simile e in cosa differisce, in un contesto come il nostro dove la parola confine emerge carsicamente?

Il confine per me non esiste e la cultura del cinema aiuta molto in questo.

Questi giovani vengono da altri mondi ma non per questo meno educati a una certa estetica.

Nonostante la nostra tradizione di Neorealismo, di grande cinema italiano, purtroppo spesso gli studenti italiani che vengono a Trieste non sono pienamente consapevoli di questo. Anzi, del nostro aureo passato gli stranieri ne sanno molto di più.

Romeo, ci racconti la genesi.

Annamaria Percavassi per noi è stata una grande maestra, e la sua eredità non è stata facile da accettare, ma lo abbiamo fatto, con umiltà. L’abbiamo modernizzata, anche se già allora la vocazione era internazionale, pur con un pubblico locale. Lei era figlia della sua epoca, quando il cinema si godeva solo in sala e non c’era ancora una visione del festival come settore industry o come laboratorio di formazione permanente. Di certo, negli ultimi 15 anni, è esploso. Abbiamo co-organizzato –assieme al Fondo Regionale per l’Audiovisivo FVG– il forum di coproduzione internazionale When East Meets West, ora uno dei maggiori mercati di cinema in Europa, con l’idea di far incontrare i professionisti dell’industria cinematografica dell’Est e dell’Ovest in Europa.

Poi c’è una parte importante dedicata all’alta formazione, con corsi di sceneggiatura per giovani, una sorta di factory.

E la Trieste Film Festival Academy rivolta agli universitari, circa un centinaio, tra italiani ed europei, provenienti da Sarajevo, Sofia, Budapest, Praga e da molti altri paesi della Nuova Europa, impegnati per 6 giorni in un programma obbligatorio di masterclass, incontri e proiezioni.

ll’inizio fu un nome: Annamaria Percavassi. Pioniera dell’Associazione Alpe Adria Cinema e tra i fondatori della Cappella Underground, un cineclub d’avanguardia. Il suo Trieste Film Festival, ora è la principale piattaforma italiana dedicata al cinema dell’Europa centro orientale.

Nicoletta Romeo ne raccoglie il testimone nel 2016, quando diventa la direttrice artistica. Prima, dal 1995, tanta gavetta. Di quella indomita realtà associativa culturale nata nel 1989 è la vice presidente, con Monica Goti che cura il management e l’organizzazione. Un gineceo folgorato dalla settima arte, come il percorso di questa ambasciatrice del cinema indipendente e d’autore che aveva già coordinato a Venezia la Settimana internazionale della Critica dal 1999 al 2006, nel 2012 fondato la società Mansarda Production e con i suoi film era approdata alla Berlinale, a Toronto.

E a Cannes. Ma torniamo al lavoro certosino che l’ex Casa del lavoratore portuale, come una matrioška operosa, contiene.

c’è la voglia di emergere. Gli sloveni da un punto di vista cinematografico sono interessanti perché sono gli unici nella ex Jugoslavia che hanno meno legami e meno debiti nei confronti del cinema balcanico. Raramente si parla di guerre o di rotte balcaniche, temi molto presenti nei film degli altri paesi della ex Jugoslavia.

Emancipazione o bisogno di creare nuovi sentieri uscendo anche da una certa retorica. È il costruirsi di identità. Ogni anno dedichiamo un focus, Wild Roses, ad un gruppo di cineaste talentuose di un paese europeo sempre diverso. Dopo Polonia, Georgia, Ucraina, Germania e Serbia, dal 16 al 24 gennaio al TSFF omaggeremo la Slovenia. Più di 13 lungometraggi e 10 cortometraggi, e tantissime donne, diverse, tostissime. Chi si esprime con l’animazione come Špela Čadež, chi nel documentario come Petra Seliškar o Maja Prelog, o giovani esordienti di successo come Urška Djukić, Kukla e Ester Ivakič.

Se si può parlare di un cinema di genere, le donne che tipo di identità supplementare portano come sguardo.

Le donne registe non raccontano la grande Storia, ma le piccole storie che la costituiscono. E poi hanno una sensibilità sul corpo femminile che io intercetto subito: la riconosco da una inquadratura. Lo sguardo costruisce il mondo scegliendo cosa e come raccontarlo.

n the beginning, there was a name: Annamaria Percavassi. A pioneer of the Alpe Adria Cinema Association and one of the founders of La Cappella Underground, an avant-garde film club. Her Trieste Film Festival is now Italy’s leading platform dedicated to Central and Eastern European cinema.

Nicoletta Romeo took up the baton in 2016, when she became Artistic Director. Before that, from 1995 onwards, years of hard graft. In that bold cultural association born in 1989, she is Vice President, working alongside Monica Goti, who oversees management and organisation. A women-led powerhouse struck by the lightning of the seventh art – much like Romeo herself, an ambassador of independent and auteur cinema who had already coordinated the Venice International Film Critics’ Week from 1999 to 2006, founded Mansarda Production in 2012 and taken her films to the Berlinale, Toronto and Cannes. But let us return to the meticulous work carried out in what was once the Casa del Lavoratore Portuale – a busy matryoshka of activity.

Romeo, tell us how it all began.

Annamaria Percavassi was an extraordinary mentor to us, and her legacy was not easy to inherit, but we did so with humility. We modernised it, even though it already had an international vocation, despite its mostly local audience. She was a woman of her time, when cinema was experienced only in theatres and there was no sense yet of a festival as an industry sector or a space for ongoing professional training. What is certain is that in the last fifteen years, this world has exploded. Together with the FVG Regional Audiovisual Fund we co-organised the international co-production forum When East Meets West, now one of the major film markets in Europe, created to bring together film professionals from Eastern and Western Europe. Then there is an important section dedicated to advanced training, with screenwriting courses for young people – a kind of factory.

And the Trieste Film Festival Academy for university students, around a hundred each year, Italians and Europeans from Sarajevo, Sofia, Budapest, Prague and many other countries of the New Europe, who spend six days following a compulsory programme of masterclasses, meetings and screenings.

These young people come from different worlds, but no less attuned to a certain aesthetic.

Despite our tradition of Neorealism and great Italian cinema, unfortunately Italian students who come to Trieste are often not fully aware of it. In fact, foreign students know far more about our golden past than we do.

As if what were missing was a visual literacy.

In Eastern Europe this education exists, and it is very strong. That is where the most prestigious film academies and universities are – such as FAMU in Prague, which has trained not only Czech or Slovak filmmakers but also Hungarians, French, Serbs and Italians.

One of the things the TSFF has succeeded in doing is dismantling stereotypes about Eastern Europe through cinema, thanks also to a dense network of parallel events ranging from photography to literature – or rather, to art in general.

It is a way of saying: come here for nine days and you will learn to understand Eastern Europe.

At the 28th Slovenian Film Festival in Portorož you were guest of honour and this year’s “Friend of Slovenian Cinema”. We could almost call it a proxemic festival, given how close it is to us. In what ways is it similar or different, in a context like ours where the notion of a “border” keeps resurfacing?

For me, the border does not exist, and film culture helps enormously in this. Slovenia is a small country, with a strong conservative drive to protect its identity, but at the same time a desire to assert itself. Slovenians, from a cinematic point of view, are fascinating because they are the only ones in the former Yugoslavia who have fewer ties and fewer debts to Balkan cinema. Their films rarely talk about war or Balkan routes – themes very present in the cinema of the other countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Emancipation, or the need to carve new paths beyond a certain rhetoric.

It is the building of an identity.

Every year we dedicate a focus – Wild Roses – to a group of talented women filmmakers from a different European country. After Poland, Georgia, Ukraine, Germany and Serbia, from 16 to 24 January the TSFF will honour Slovenia. More than 13 feature films and 10 short films, and many women – all very different, all formidable. Those working in animation, such as Špela Čadež; documentary filmmakers like Petra Seliškar or Maja Prelog; and successful debut directors such as Urška Djukić, Kukla and Ester Ivakič.

If we can speak of a genre cinema, what additional identity do women bring through their gaze?

Women directors do not narrate capital-H History, but the small stories that compose it. And they have a sensitivity to the female body that I detect immediately – I can recognise it from a single shot. The gaze shapes the world by choosing what to tell and how to tell it.

iviBank continua a crescere e ad aprire e rinnovare filiali. Dopo l’inaugurazione della filiale di Piazza Unità d’Italia a Trieste di quella nel cuore del centro storico di Udine, il 25 novembre scorso è la volta della filiale Udine 1 di Piazzale XXVI Luglio, completamente trasformata e con spazi raddoppiati a favore della clientela; ben 623 metri quadri, su due piani, a disposizione di privati e imprese. Si tratta di una filiale aperta nel 2013, adesso “come nuova”, in cui lavorano dieci professionisti che hanno reso la “Udine 1” una agenzia “top performer” rispetto all’intera rete CiviBank.

Un evidente segnale di salute e di fiducia nel futuro quello lanciato dal CiviBank, che ha voluto quindi sottolineare il momento di crescita con una cerimonia a cui hanno partecipato i vertici della banca, la presidente Alberta Gervasio e il direttore generale Luca Cristoforetti, ma anche le autorità cittadine e regionali, tra cui l’assessore alle attività produttive del Friuli Venezia Giulia Emilio Bini e il vicesindaco di Udine Alessandro Venanzi.

After the inauguration of the new branch in Piazza Unità d’Italia in Trieste and the one in the heart of Udine’s historic centre, the bank unveiled, on 25 November, the completely redesigned Udine 1 branch in Piazzale XXVI Luglio. The branch has been fully transformed, doubling its spaces for customers: 623 square metres over two floors now dedicated to private clients and businesses. Opened in 2013, the branch is now “as good as new” and home to ten professionals who have made “Udine 1” one of the top-performing agencies in the entire CiviBank network.

It is a clear sign of strength and confidence in the future. To mark this moment of growth, CiviBank hosted an opening ceremony attended by the bank’s top management–President Alberta Gervasio and CEO Luca Cristoforetti–along with city and regional authorities, including Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Regional Councillor for Production Activities, Emilio Bini, and Udine’s Deputy Mayor, Alessandro Venanzi.

conclusa in virtù della programmazione attenta di Mario de Luyk), ma anche lo spazio estivo del Giardino Pubblico.

Soprattutto resta, per i triestini non giovanissimi, il ricordo di una serie di abitudini che le nuove generazioni non conoscono perché si sono polverizzate in meno di un decennio.

Ad esempio: le seconde visioni. Chi non riusciva ad assistere ad un film all’Excelsior, al Fenice, al Nazionale, al Ritz o all’Eden (a volte perché non poteva permetterselo), era certo di ritrovare quel film, un mese e mezzo dopo, al Capitol (dove tornavano i Disney), all’Aurora o al Cristallo (che fra l’altro quasi ogni estate riproponeva i film di 007). L’Impero, il Ferroviario, il Vittorio Veneto ed altri, fungevano addirittura da sale di terza visione.

Ancora: una volta, i ritardatari potevano entrare in sala a programmazione iniziata, ed assistere alla proiezione successiva fino a quando arrivava la scena corrispondente al loro ingresso…

Fino al 1975, all’interno di una sala cinematografica era consentito fumare (cosa che conferiva ad alcune di esse una fragranza tutta particolare e certamente già allora poco apprezzata).

Intendiamoci: ancora oggi, assistere a un film in una sala, è un rito (quanto collettivo, resta da stabilire). Un tempo però, anche in virtù di quanto sopra, il rito seguiva regole ben precise: alla scelta del film non era indifferente la stessa sala (vuoi per la distanza, vuoi per il fascino, vuoi per infinite ragioni), né il gusto di assistere a quelli che allora si chiamavano “provini”, antesignani assai più lunghi dei trailer, a loro volta parte integrante dello spettacolo. Spettacolo che, come risulta dalle conversazioni degli amici, quando si ritrovano, ha lasciato un evidente e straordinario ricordo.

asterebbe interpellare qualche “boomer”, oppure che uno di essi interpellasse la propria memoria, per disegnare una toponomastica dei cinema triestini distante anni luce dalla situazione attuale (che di fatto relega le sale in tre zone della città). I racconti poi consegnano una serie di abitudini, collegate alla visione di un film, che alle giovani generazioni possono sembrare persino assurde.

Pure, tutto parla di qualcosa che appartiene decisamente al passato.

Passeggiare per gli scaffali di un mega-emporio che la vox populi collega ai cinesi, sapendo che quello era il luogo dove venivano proiettati i film di James Bond; correre su un tapis roulant a pochi metri dallo schermo che rimandava le avventure di Luke Skywalker nel primo “Star Wars”; recarsi per una pratica pensionistica nella sede dell’INPS impadronitasi nel frattempo della sala in cui Katharine Hepburn diceva ad Henry Fonda “You are my knight in a shining armour…” (lo diceva con la voce di Isa Bellini, scriverlo in inglese fa più “à la page”); acquistare penne e quaderni nello stesso luogo dove Michael Corleone aveva condannato il fratello Alfredo: se da un lato è vero che ragionamenti di questo genere inchiodano una persona alla sua età, dall’altro raccontano di una città in cui il numero di sale cinematografiche potrebbe sembrare, oggi, persino sproporzionato.

Nel secondo dopoguerra, e per tutti gli anni Cinquanta, Trieste poteva contare su circa 35 “cinematografi” attivi con programmazioni quotidiane spesso doppie (matinée e serali). Fra gli anni Sessanta e settanta, un primo declino; il crollo, nei decenni successivi.

ou only have to consult a seasoned “boomer” – or simply reach into your own memory, if you happen to belong to that tribe – to sketch a map of Trieste’s old cinemas that feels lightyears away from today’s landscape, in which the city’s screens are effectively confined to just three areas. The stories that surface evoke habits tied to going to the pictures that younger generations might easily find borderline unbelievable.

Everything, of course, whispers of a time that has quietly slipped into the past.

Strolling through the aisles of a vast emporium popularly associated with Chinese wholesalers, knowing that this was once the place where James Bond films flickered across the screen; running on a treadmill just a few metres from where Luke Skywalker once launched into his first “Star Wars” adventure; queueing for pension forms at the INPS office that took over the room where Katharine Hepburn once proclaimed to Henry Fonda, “You are my knight in shining armour…” (voiced, needless to say, by Isa Bellini – though writing it in English gives it a certain glossy allure); buying pens and exercise books in the very spot where Michael Corleone condemned his brother Fredo.

On one hand, such recollections betray one’s age; on the other, they form a portrait of a city that, by today’s standards, seems to have had a surprisingly abundant number of cinemas.

In the post-war years, and throughout the 1950s, Trieste boasted around 35 active “cinematografi”, many offering two daily screenings – matinée and evening shows. The decline began in the Sixties and Seventies; the collapse followed in the decades after.

What survives today are the screens run by EGM Cinema (in the upper part of Viale XX Settembre), the The Space multiplex inside the “Torri d’Europa” shopping centre, and the recently refurbished Ariston – long without its open-air

arena, where the author first saw “Barry Lyndon” and where, for years, you could catch up on the season’s films thanks to Mario de Luyk’s meticulous programming. There is also the summer space in the Giardino Pubblico.

But above all, there lingers – particularly among Triestini of a certain age – the memory of habits that vanished in less than a decade and are completely unknown to younger viewers.

Take second-run cinemas: if you missed a film at the Excelsior, Fenice, Nazionale, Ritz or Eden – sometimes because you simply couldn’t afford it – you knew you’d find it again six weeks later at the Capitol (where Disney films would return), the Aurora or the Cristallo (which nearly every summer reprised the Bond series). The Impero, the Ferroviario, the Vittorio Veneto and others even acted as third-run venues.

Then there were the latecomers: once upon a time, turning up after the film had begun was perfectly acceptable – you simply stayed through the next screening until you reached the moment where you had first walked in.

And until 1975, smoking was allowed in cinemas – a habit that lent some theatres a very particular aroma, hardly appreciated even then.

Let’s be clear: even today, watching a film in a cinema retains something of the ritual (how collective that ritual remains is open to debate). But in those days, the ritual obeyed very specific rules: the choice of film was influenced not only by the story but by the cinema itself – its location, its charm, its countless quirks – and by the pleasure of watching what were then known as “provini”, early, elongated cousins of the modern trailer, very much part of the spectacle. A spectacle that, as the conversations of friends often reveal when they meet, has left behind extraordinary and unmistakable memories.

Turismo, paesaggio e “set-experience” L’impatto del cinema sul turismo è tangibile. Da un lato, le produzioni generano presenze, lavoro e collaborazioni locali; dall’altro, costruiscono un immaginario che spinge i visitatori a scoprire i luoghi visti sullo schermo. Un borgo che fu set diventa meta, una veduta filmata diventa cartolina, un itinerario “sulle tracce del cinema” si affianca alle esperienze outdoor tradizionali.

Grazie alla competenza del team e alla rete di collaborazioni costruita in venticinque anni di attività, FVG Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG è oggi un punto di riferimento nazionale e internazionale e un modello di sinergia tra cinema e territorio. Produzioni, major e videoclip Nel solo triennio 2022-2024 la FVG Film Commission ha assistito 224 produzioni, di cui 76 finanziate, confermando la capacità della regione di attrarre progetti di rilievo, dalle opere indipendenti ai titoli per le principali piattaforme internazionali. Film come Campo di battaglia di Gianni Amelio, Gloria! di Margherita Vicario, Napoli–New York di Gabriele Salvatores e Little Trouble Girls hanno portato il Friuli Venezia Giulia nei più importanti festival del mondo.

Accanto al cinema d’autore, la regione ha ospitato produzioni major come The Old Guard II con Charlize Theron, Lift con Kevin Hart, Capi di Stato in fuga (Heads of State) con Idris Elba e The Dog Stars di Ridley Scott. Questi set

internazionali hanno ampliato la visibilità del territorio a livello globale, generando nuove opportunità e crescita professionale per tecnici e maestranze locali.

Il cinema che racconta (e promuove) il territorio In Friuli Venezia Giulia il cinema non è solo arte o intrattenimento: è una lente attraverso cui il territorio si racconta e si fa conoscere al mondo. Dalle Alpi al mare, questa terra concentra paesaggi e identità che, grazie a FVG Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG, trovano nel cinema un efficace strumento di valorizzazione. Da venticinque anni la Film Commission accompagna e sostiene produzioni cinematografiche, televisive e musicali, promuovendo una terra sempre più “film friendly”. Fondata nel 2000, dal 2022 la Film Commission fa parte di PromoTurismoFVG, confermando il legame tra cultura e turismo. Cinema that narrates – and promotes – the region In Friuli Venezia Giulia, cinema is far more than art or entertainment: it is a lens through which the region tells its story and presents itself to the world.

From the Alps to the sea, this land gathers landscapes and identities that, thanks to the FVG Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG, find in cinema an effective tool for showcasing their

value. For twenty-five years, the Film Commission has supported film, television and music productions, promoting a region that is increasingly “film-friendly”. Founded in 2000, the Film Commission has been part of PromoTurismoFVG since 2022, confirming the deep connection between culture and tourism. Its role is that of facilitator: it provides logistical assistance, location scouting and support with permits. Alongside these services, the Film Fund offers financial support to productions that choose to shoot in the region, boosting local professionals and sustainable practices.

Music, too, finds a home in Friuli Venezia Giulia: music videos such as Mahmood’s Tuta Gold, Cesare Cremonini’s Ora che non ho più te and Jovanotti’s Montecristo have garnered tens of millions of views, transforming city corners and natural landscapes into pop icons.

Tourism, landscape and the “set-experience” The impact of cinema on tourism is tangible. Productions bring footfall, jobs and local partnerships; at the same time, they shape an imaginary that inspires visitors to seek out the places they have seen on screen. A village that was once a film set becomes a destination; a filmed panorama becomes a postcard; and an itinerary “in the footsteps of cinema” sits alongside traditional outdoor experiences.

Thanks to the expertise of its team and the network of collaborations built over twenty-five years, FVG Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG is now a national and international point of reference, and a model of synergy between cinema and territory. Every film shot in Friuli Venezia Giulia leaves more than just a scene behind: it helps build shared memory, imagination and value.

La promozione del territorio attraverso la sua presenza in film o fiction è ormai una delle modalità classiche di veicolazione e marketing indiretto di una meta, tanto quanto lo sono la costruzione di percorsi cineturistici che conducono alla scoperta di luoghi utilizzati come set.

A Trieste e più in generale in Friuli Venezia Giulia il lavoro della FVG Film Commission –la quale finanzia le produzioni audiovisive che scelgono di girare in regione– ha portato molti registi a individuare città, borghi e ambienti naturali del nostro territorio come cornice delle loro opere. Alle volte Trieste è esplicitata come location, altre volte presta i propri scorci per essere un luogo ideale e fantomatico, esattamente come un attore presta il proprio volto identificandosi in un personaggio.

Così fiction divenute celebri come La Porta rossa e Un caso di coscienza hanno reso riconoscibili alcuni luoghi

di Trieste: la gru Ursus montata sul suo pontone e varata nel 1914 è diventata uno dei simboli della serie con il commissario Leonardo Cagliostro alias Lino Guanciale (oggi la gru è in rimessaggio al Porto nuovo e la si può vedere passando in auto sulla superstrada in direzione Muggia); mentre il palazzo della Prefettura che affaccia su Piazza Unità è stato il tribunale nella fiction con Sebastiano Somma nei panni dell’avvocato Rocco Tasca.

Se tuttavia individuare tutti i set della propria serie del cuore è una ricerca da fan accaniti, può essere molto più curioso farsi guidare da Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Locations, un portale curato dallo Studio Sandrinelli attraverso il quale è possibile accedere a un’ampia selezione di film, fiction e videoclip musicali girati in regione, scoprendo così oltre cinquecento luoghi che hanno ospitato le troupe. uante volte guardando il grande o il piccolo schermo si viene rapiti da un paesaggio, da un’ambientazione tanto da volerli vedere dal vivo? Quante volte la scelta di un set ha fatto la fortuna di un film o viceversa i flussi turistici in una determinata località sono cresciuti a seguito della sua apparizione in un film, una serie o addirittura nei brevissimi trenta secondi di una pubblicità?

Se da un lato la Fontana di Trevi non aveva certo bisogno di Anita Ekberg ne La Dolce Vita per diventare famosa (quante però sognano un bagno “alla Ekberg” in quella meraviglia scultorea e architettonica del centro di Roma?), dall’altro la fortuna della porta blu dietro la quale si trincerano Julia Roberts e Hugh Grant comincia dopo il successo del film Notting Hill; tanto che ora nessuno penserebbe più di cambiare il colore del 280 di Westbourne Park a Londra.

Cos’hanno in comune La Porta Rossa e i video Sere Nere di Tiziano Ferro, Dea Musica di Piero Pelù e Tuta Gold di Mahmood? Tutti sono girati integralmente o in parte nel comprensorio delle case popolari di Melara, che pur con la sua forte identità si rende riconoscibile, ma al tempo stesso “confondibile” in un mondo vagamente distopico e alienante.

La app fornisce una serie di itinerari speciali già pronti e inoltre permette di sfruttare al massimo le proposte artigianali nella sezione Vivi Fvg con indicazioni utili per soste pranzo e cena, acquisti tipici o luoghi dove pernottare.

Vivere il mondo dell’audiovisivo tuttavia non significa soltanto inseguire le location, bensì frequentare anche i numerosi festival che si susseguono durante l’intero anno, non solo a Trieste.

Nell’anno di GO!2025 (che si concluderà a febbraio 2026) con Nova Gorica e Gorizia Capitale Europea della Cultura, Zero Stress Production insieme all’Associazione Culturale Anno uno – I Mille Occhi rende omaggio a Franco Basaglia, direttore dell’Ospedale psichiatrico di Gorizia dal 1961 al 1969, con KINO BASAGLIA, una rassegna cinematografica itinerante, che attraverso materiali d’archivio, documentari e lungometraggi dedicati all’epoca basagliana, intende mantenere vivo il pensiero di Basaglia.

Sempre a Gorizia a luglio si svolge il Premio Sergio Amidei, un’ultra quarantennale rassegna dedicata alla sceneggiatura e al cinema d’autore, mentre all’inizio dell’autunno sboccia Omaggio a una visione, festival cinematografico transfrontaliero Cross-border Film Festival organizzato da Kinoatelje, che da oltre ventisei anni propone un’esplorazione della società attraverso un linguaggio innovativo e sperimentale.

E se Pordenone ogni ottobre diventa il meeting point per coloro che amano le pellicole storiche con le sue affascinanti Giornate del Cinema Muto, Udine ha invece fatto crescere quella che poteva apparire una nicchia e si è rivelata la grande avventura del Far East Film Festival, un osservatorio privilegiato sulle produzioni asiatiche.

Non da ultimo va ricordato il Piccolo Festival dell’Animazione, che si tiene in maniera diffusa in regione, ma ha il suo cuore a San Vito al Tagliamento.

Per chi viene a visitare il nostro territorio in periodi extra festival niente paura perché gli eventi connessi al mondo del cinema non mancano mai.

La Cineteca del Friuli di Gemona, immenso tesoro fatto di pellicole, film su supporti diversi, una fototeca e una delle maggiori biblioteche specializzate a livello italiano, propone al Castello di Gemona fino al 29 marzo 2026 la mostra L’età dell’amore curata dal critico e storico del cinema Sergio M. Grmek Germani. L’esposizione rende omaggio alla figura complessa e raffinata di Gianni Da Campo (1943-2014), regista, scrittore e collezionista veneziano, che in una vita intera seppe raccogliere e custodire manifesti, fumetti, riviste e manoscritti che conducono tra le suggestioni di un dopoguerra di meraviglie indagato attraverso la lente delle influenze del fumetto e del cinema.

H

ow often, while watching a film or a series, have we found ourselves mesmerised by a landscape or a setting – so much so that we’ve wanted to see it in person? How often has the choice of a location determined the success of a film, or conversely, how often has tourism surged in a place simply because it appeared on screen, sometimes for as little as thirty seconds?

The Trevi Fountain certainly did not need Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita to become iconic – though many still dream of taking an “Ekberg-style” dip in that sculptural marvel in the heart of Rome. But the fate of the now-famous blue door behind which Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant hide in Notting Hill changed entirely after the film’s release; today, no one would dream of repainting the door at 280 Westbourne Park Road.

Promoting a place through its presence in films or television has become a classic form of indirect marketing, as have curated cinematic itineraries that lead visitors through locations used as sets.

In Trieste –and across Friuli Venezia Giulia– the work of the FVG Film Commission, which supports audiovisual productions wishing to film in the region, has encouraged many directors to choose our cities, villages and landscapes as the backdrop for their stories. Sometimes Trieste is explicitly named; other times it lends its streets and seafronts to portray a fictional or unplaceable setting, just as an actor lends their face to a character.

This is how successful TV dramas like La Porta Rossa and Un Caso di Coscienza have made certain corners of Trieste instantly recognisable. The Ursus crane –mounted on its barge and launched in 1914– became one of the symbols of La Porta Rossa, starring Lino Guanciale as inspector Leonardo Cagliostro. (Today the crane is stored at Porto Nuovo and can be glimpsed from the highway towards Muggia.)

For fans determined to identify every filming location of their favourite series, the hunt can be a delightful obsession. But it is even more intriguing to let yourself be guided by Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Locations, an online platform curated by Studio Sandrinelli. It offers an extensive selection of films, series and music videos shot in the region – more than five hundred locations in total – allowing visitors to create itineraries that appeal well beyond the circle of cinephiles.

What connects La Porta Rossa to the music videos for Tiziano Ferro’s Sere Nere, Piero Pelù’s Dea Musica and Mahmood’s Tuta Gold? All were filmed wholly or partly in Melara, a social-housing district whose strong identity somehow makes it both recognisable and “confusable” – perfect for a vaguely dystopian, alienating atmosphere.

The platform also offers readymade themed routes, and its Vivi FVG section highlights artisanal excellence across the region, with tips for dining, food shopping and accommodation.

To train specialists in film tourism, Trieste Film Hub, the training branch of Casa del Cinema, has even created a dedicated course that elevates this unique facet of experiential travel.

Yet experiencing the audiovisual world does not simply mean tracing filming locations: it also means enjoying the many festivals held throughout the year, far beyond Trieste itself.

In the year of GO!2025 –which concludes in February 2026, with Nova Gorica and Gorizia as European Capitals of Culture– Zero Stress Production and the cultural association

Anno uno – I Mille Occhi pay tribute to Franco Basaglia, director of the Gorizia Psychiatric Hospital from 1961 to 1969, with KINO BASAGLIA, a travelling film programme. Through archival materials, documentaries and feature films, it keeps Basaglia’s ideas alive.

Also in Gorizia, July brings the Sergio Amidei Prize, a forty-year-old festival dedicated to screenwriting and auteur cinema. Early autumn sees the return of Omaggio a una visione, a cross-border film festival organised by Kinoatelje, which for over twenty-six years has explored society through innovative and experimental cinematic languages.

Pordenone, meanwhile, becomes a pilgrimage site for lovers of historical cinema every October with the magical Giornate del Cinema Muto. Udine has transformed what once seemed a niche interest into the thriving adventure of the Far East Film Festival, a major gateway to contemporary Asian cinema.

Not to be forgotten is the Piccolo Festival dell’Animazione, held throughout the region but centred in San Vito al Tagliamento.

For visitors arriving outside festival periods, fear not – the world of film never sleeps here.

The Cineteca del Friuli in Gemona –a vast archive of films, photographs and one of Italy’s most important specialised libraries– is hosting the exhibition L’età dell’amore at the Castello di Gemona until 29 March 2026. Curated by critic and film historian Sergio M. Grmek Germani, the exhibition pays homage to Gianni Da Campo (1943– 2014), Venetian director, writer and collector who spent a lifetime gathering posters, comics, magazines and manuscripts that illuminate the wonders of a post-war world through the intertwined languages of comics and cinema.

uando il paesaggio diventa parte integrante di un racconto. Tra i diversi film girati in questi anni tra le montagne del Friuli Venezia Giulia, spiccano due titoli: “La Valle dei sorrisi” del regista Paolo Strippoli e “Ultimo schiaffo” diretto da Matteo Oleotto, che sono stati presentati rispettivamente alla 82ª Mostra Internazionale del Cinema di Venezia, in anteprima fuori concorso, e nella sezione Alice nella Città del Festival del Cinema di Roma.

“La valle dei sorrisi”, prodotto da Fandango, Nightswim e Spok, (in collaborazione con Vision Distribution), racconta la vicenda di Sergio, un insegnante di educazione fisica che viene trasferito in un paesino sperduto di montagna.

L’uomo, tormentato da un lutto, scopre presto che l’apparente tranquillità del paese cela un mistero inquietante.

“Ultimo Schiaffo” è invece una commedia diretta da Matteo Oleotto e prodotta da Staragara I.T. e SPOK Films, Mompracem, Transmedia e Lokafilm, in collaborazione con RTV Slovenija, Tucker Film e Rai Cinema, che narra la storia di due fratelli, Petra e Jure, che vivono in difficoltà economiche in un paesino friulano e cercano di trovare un

financially in a small Friulian village and try to find a way to improve their situation.

“These are two films shot entirely in our mountains,” says Michele Sardina, an independent location manager working in Friuli Venezia Giulia and collaborating with the FVG Film Commission – PromoTurismoFVG. “La valle dei sorrisi was originally meant to be filmed only partly in our region, but once the production got to know the area, they chose it for all the locations.” The film is set in a town that does not exist, Remis. “It’s an imaginary place that could be anywhere,” Sardina continues, “a match that required intensive work between Valbruna, Tarvisio, Sappada (used for the first time as a film set since its return to Friuli Venezia Giulia), Malborghetto and Pontebba. Ultimo schiaffo, on the other hand, is openly set at Lake Predil, and the director, being from Gorizia, already knew our landscapes well. Most of the time, however, directors and productions arrive disoriented because the Friulian mountains are not as well known as, say, Cortina. But perhaps it is precisely for this reason that people end up surprised – and fall in love with them.”

hen the landscape becomes an essential part of the story. Among the many films shot in recent years in the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia, two titles stand out: La valle dei sorrisi (The Valley of Smiles), directed by Paolo Strippoli, and Ultimo schiaffo (The Last Slap), directed by Matteo Oleotto. The two films were screened respectively at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, in an out-of-competition premiere, and in the Alice nella Città section of the Rome Film Festival.

La valle dei sorrisi (The Valley of Smiles), produced by Fandango, Nightswim and Spok (in collaboration with Vision Distribution), follows the story of Sergio, a PE teacher who is transferred to a remote mountain village. Haunted by bereavement, he soon discovers that the apparent tranquillity of the place hides a disturbing mystery.

La valle dei sorrisi è ambientato in una cittadina che non esiste, Remis. “È un posto immaginario che potrebbe essere ovunque –continua Sardina–, un match che ha richiesto un lavoro intenso tra Valbruna, Tarvisio, Sappada (per la prima volta tornata set di un film da quando fa parte del Friuli Venezia Giulia, ndr), Malborghetto e Pontebba. “Ultimo schiaffo”, invece, è proprio dichiaratamente un film ambientato al lago del Predil e il regista, essendo goriziano, conosceva già i nostri luoghi. Ma, forse, proprio per questo le persone rimangono stupite e se ne innamorano”.

Una celebrazione spettacolare per ricordare l’impresa del Batiscafo Trieste.

il batiscafo come opera di un museo, scultura dei nostri sensi, dove scienza e arte sono un’unica installazione.

Due storie in una. Il ricordo e la rappresentazione del batiscafo dei record del 1953 e 1960 evocato con le voci e i volti dei testimoni che ne hanno visto le gesta lungo le coste di Trieste, Monfalcone, Castellammare di Stabia, Capri e Ponza, è accompagnato dalle emozioni e azioni dei protagonisti del “nuovo batiscafo” per un approdo all’arte della navigazione di cui da sempre l’Italia è maestra. Il film indica rotte verso la bellezza di uomini che hanno creduto alla scienza come etica, come sapere al servizio del sapere. Da qui tra materiali del passato e del presente con riprese in tutti i luoghi della storia questi due batiscafi si guardano e si guidano invitando a salire a bordo di una visione unica al centro della scoperta di Picard e Walsh, visione messa in moto da de Henriquez: il mare è sacro perché sa della vita. La tesi di “Operazione Batiscafo Trieste” è registicamente sorprendente e scandalosa. L’immersione nella fossa delle Marianne e relativo record ebbero un effetto: la salvaguardia dell’ambiente marino, la sua tutela. La vita scoperta sotto la superficie del mare a migliaia di metri ha salvato la vita altrui dallo smaltimento di rifiuti che avrebbero compromesso quell’oceano che pure se lontano da noi è ancora il nostro.

Una storia dentro l’altra. Non poteva che essere così.

ue piloti. Un record. Un mare unico intorno a noi. E un uomo che da lontano finalmente si incammina verso un museo, il suo, della guerra per la pace.

Quell’uomo è Diego de Henriquez. Lui sa che tutto è iniziato a Trieste. I piloti, Don Walsh e Jacques Piccard. Loro non sono qui. Non più. Ma i loro figli Bertrand Piccard e Kelly Walsh volevano tornare a trovarci. Perché quell’impresa non è finita. Inizia così non solo il film che riunisce una famiglia a fianco dell’altra, sulla stessa sfera, che si fa magica e mitica. Una storia dentro l’altra. Non poteva che essere così. Sotto la superficie si scopre che la profondità è in noi. Ne siamo parte. Abbiamo bisogno di immergerci per toccare non il fondo ma la realtà. Chi mai avrebbe pensato che un batiscafo, il Trieste, divenisse più reale di Trieste stessa?

Nell’immaginario (una delle necessarie immersioni che l’uomo fa nella sua produzione di sogni e di segni) il Trieste è più vero della verosimile città da cui trae il nome. Quando nel 1960, il 15 febbraio, tra i quasi sette milioni di lettori di Life si apprese del successo dell’impresa del Batiscafo Trieste, quanti di loro sapevano dove e cosa fosse Trieste? Il batiscafo batteva bandiera americana ma tra quelle stelle e strisce emergeva un’alabarda destinata ad essere arma di pace e di progresso. Una straordinaria e suggestiva sfida che non finirà il 23 gennaio di quell’anno ma che attendeva i lettori di Trieste quali co-produttori di quei sogni. Ora il segno c’è. Parte da qui un duplice viaggio che solo il cinema poteva offrire poeticamente. Con un doppio movimento. Da un lato il docufilm “Operazione batiscafo Trieste” ormeggia sulle banchine della storia dove tra Adriatico e Tirreno l’orizzonte del mare si tenderà in questa grande impresa. Dall’altro lato il docufilm galleggia sulle onde dell’esplorazione partendo dalla nuova impresa: la realizzazione della ricostruzione contemporanea del batiscafo. Il batiscafo, atteso da de Henriquez collezionista di visioni prima ancora di azioni, ha come protagonista un mezzo di navigazione che si fa mezzo di immaginazione:

wo pilots. One record. A unique sea surrounding us. And a man who, from afar, finally walks towards a museum –his museum– of war for peace. That man is Diego de Henriquez. He knows that everything began in Trieste. The pilots were Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard.

They are no longer here. But their sons, Bertrand Piccard and Kelly Walsh, wanted to return to see us. Because that feat did not end.

This is how the film begins – a film that brings together one family beside another, on the same sphere, which becomes both magical and mythical. One story inside another. It could not have been otherwise. Beneath the surface we discover that depth lies within us.

We are part of it. We need to dive in, not to reach the bottom but to touch reality. Who would ever have imagined that a bathyscaphe –the Trieste– would become more real than Trieste itself?

In our collective imagination (one of those necessary descents into the dreams and signs we create), the Trieste is truer than the plausible city whose name it bears. When, on 15 February 1960, the nearly seven million readers of Life learned of the success of the Bathyscaphe Trieste expedition, how many of them knew where Trieste was, or what it was? The vessel flew

an American flag, yet among the stars and stripes an alabarda emerged – destined to become a weapon of peace and progress.

An extraordinary and evocative challenge that did not end on 23 January of that year but awaited the readers of Trieste, co-producers of those dreams.

Now the sign exists. From here begins a double journey, one that only cinema could offer with such poetry. In a double movement. On one hand, the docufilm Operazione Batiscafo Trieste moors itself on the quays of history, where between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian the horizon stretches across this great endeavour. On the other, the docufilm floats on the waves of exploration, starting from a new feat: the creation of a contemporary reconstruction of the bathyscaphe.

The bathyscaphe –long awaited by de Henriquez, collector of visions before collector of artefacts– becomes a vessel of navigation that turns into a vessel of imagination: a bathyscaphe as a museum piece, a sculpture for our senses, where science and art merge into a single installation. Two stories in one.

The memory and representation of the record-breaking bathyscaphe of 1953 and 1960 –evoked through the voices and faces of those who witnessed its exploits along the coasts of Trieste, Monfalcone, Castellammare di Stabia, Capri and Ponza– are accompanied by the emotions and actions of the protagonists of the “new bathyscaphe”, leading to a renewed art of navigation of which Italy has always been a master.

The film sets out routes towards the beauty of those who believed in science as an ethic – knowledge at the service of knowledge. Here, between materials of the past and present and through filming in all the places of its history, the two bathyscaphes look at one another and guide one another, inviting us on board a unique vision at the heart of the discovery made by Piccard and Walsh – a vision first set in motion by de Henriquez: the sea is sacred because it knows life.

The thesis of Operazione Batiscafo Trieste is, from a directorial perspective, astonishing – even unsettling. The descent into the Mariana Trench, and the resulting record, had one profound effect: the safeguarding of the marine environment, its protection. The life discovered beneath the sea, thousands of metres down, helped save other lives from the dumping of waste that would have harmed that ocean which, even if far from us, remains ours.

rieste in winter shifts tempo, but never stops surprising. Marine luminose, ritratti intensi, atmosfere simboliste e raffinate sinuosità novecentesche dialogano con i capolavori storici del museo, offrendo uno sguardo ricco e variegato sulla pittura triestina tra Ottocento e Novecento.

Per chi ama le memorie in bianco e nero, fino ad aprile Palazzo Gopcevich ospita la mostra “La Fototeca in piazza. Scatti di storia e storie” che ripercorre la storia di Piazza Unità d’Italia e dei suoi edifici, seguendone le trasformazioni architettoniche e sociali: vedute brulicanti di tram, caffè, alberghi, giardini e velieri sullo sfondo, ma anche momenti di vita quotidiana, tensioni politiche, identità in movimento.

Infine, al Museo Sar torio la Donazione Lokar, più di cinquecento pezzi delle principali manifatture europee, racconta la storia della porcellana del settecento tra tazze, piattini, servizi, caffettiere e sculture minuziosamente decorate. Un viaggio raffinato attraverso l’Europa –dall’Austria all’Italia, dalla Spagna alla Repubblica Ceca, dalla Francia alla Danimarca, dal Regno Unito alla Russia– che dà vita a una delle collezioni più complete in Italia per varietà di provenienza.

In questo intreccio di luci, mare e cultura, l’inverno a Trieste diventa un invito a rallentare: entra in un museo, lasciati incuriosire da una mostra e esci con gli occhi pieni di meraviglia.

Chi preferisce il richiamo del mare può scoprire il nuovo allestimento dedicato al Lloyd al Museo del Mare, un percorso che ripercorre la storia della grande compagnia di navigazione triestina e del suo ruolo nella vita della città: rotte, navi, oggetti, documenti e immagini che raccontano decenni di viaggi, commerci e legami internazionali. For the holiday season, the City Museums of Trieste, in collaboration with CoopCulture, have organised a rich programme of activities for children (ages 6–11) and their families: not simple guided tours, but real workshops and playful learning experiences filled with creativity and discovery. Fans of the fantastic have until 11 January to visit the major Tolkien exhibition at the Salone degli Incanti, dedicated to the father of Middle-earth.

Those drawn to the sea can explore the new display dedicated to the Lloyd at the Museo del Mare: a journey through the history of Trieste’s great shipping company and its role in the life of the city–routes, ships, objects, documents and images that recount decades of travel, trade and international ties.

At the Museo Revoltella, the highlight is the new Luciani Collection: a permanent exhibition presenting a selection of paintings chosen from over one hundred works donated by Annamaria and Luciano Luciani. Luminous seascapes, intense portraits, symbolist atmospheres and elegant early-20th-century curves enter into dialogue with the museum’s historic masterpieces, offering a rich and varied vision of Triestine painting between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Trieste il vento gira, le lingue si mischiano tra un caffè e l’altro e, da secoli, Europa occidentale e orientale si incontrano. Da quando nel 1719 è stata proclamata Porto Franco, Trieste ha attirato mercanti, marinai e famiglie da tutto il mondo, ognuna con la propria fede e le proprie tradizioni. Il risultato? Un centro storico dove guglie gotiche, cupole bizantine, facciate neoclassiche e simboli ebraici e islamici convivono a pochi passi l’uno dall’altro.

Basta affacciarsi sul Canal Grande per sentirlo subito: da un lato la chiesa neoclassica di Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, con il suo pronao che sembra uscito da un tempio romano; dall’altro le cupole cerulee in stile bizantino del Tempio Serbo Ortodosso.

Alle sue spalle, risalendo la collina, la Cattedrale di San Giusto: costruita nel quattordicesimo secolo sui resti di un tempio romano, nota per i suoi affreschi e per i suoi meravigliosi mosaici.

n Trieste the wind is always on the move, languages blend from one coffee to the next and, for centuries, Western and Eastern Europe have met and mingled here. Ever since it was declared a Free Port in 1719, the city has attracted merchants, sailors and families from all over the world, each bringing their own faith and traditions.

The result? A historic centre where Gothic spires, Byzantine domes, neoclassical façades and Jewish and Islamic symbols stand just a few steps from one another.

You only have to look out over the Grand Canal to feel it straight away: on one side the neoclassical church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, its portico recalling a Roman temple; on the other, the sky-blue Byzantine domes of the Serbian Orthodox church.

Behind them, climbing the hill, stands the Cathedral of San Giusto. Built in the fourteenth century on the remains of a Roman temple, it is renowned for its frescoes and its magnificent mosaics.

A little further down, Santa Maria Maggiore tells the story of the Jesuits and of the Triestini who, every 21 November, still climb up here to give thanks to the Madonna della Salute.

Back in the Borgo Teresiano quarter you come to the refined Greek Orthodox church of San Nicolò, its twin bell-towers

rising above the elegant buildings along the Rive.

Close by, other communities have turned ancient Romanesque churches and new neo-Gothic architectures into welcoming places of worship, often used as stages for concerts and cultural events, such as the church of San Silvestro, the oldest in Trieste and now home to the Swiss and Waldensian Protestant community.

Then there is the great Synagogue, one of the most imposing in Europe: its rose windows shaped as Stars of David recall the crucial role played by the Jewish community in the city’s cultural and economic life. Completing this mosaic of faiths is the Ar-Rayan Mosque: behind its period façade lies a prayer hall and a space where Trieste’s Islam tells its story in everyday life.

Other striking sites lie just outside the city. The sanctuary of Monte Grisa stands out on the karst ridge above Barcola: from here your gaze sweeps across the gulf, embracing three countries at once – Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. And then there is the sanctuary of Monrupino, a quiet place of prayer and silence a stone’s throw from the village of Repen, famous for its traditional Karst weddings.

Il Museo storico e Parco del Castello di Miramare, il Museo archeologico nazionale di Aquileia, il Museo Paleocristiano di Aquileia, il Museo nazionale di archeologia subacquea dell’Alto Adriatico e il Museo archeologico nazionale di Cividale inaugurano così una stagione ricca di grandi mostre, nuove aperture e iniziative condivise come eventi, momenti di formazione e spettacoli dal vivo.

La direttrice delegata, Marianna Bressan, sottolinea: “Mettere in rete i Musei Nazionali della regione permette di intraprendere uno straordinario viaggio nel tempo, dal VII secolo a.C. all’Ottocento. The Historical Museum and Park of Miramare Castle, the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia, the

Early Christian Museum of Aquileia, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology of the Upper Adriatic and the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale now open a new season filled with major exhibitions, new openings and shared initiatives, including events, training opportunities and live performances.

Deputy Director Marianna Bressan explains: “Creating a network among the National Museums of the region opens up an extraordinary journey through time, from the 7th century BC to the nineteenth century. It is a museum network that also develops vertically, involving all regional cultural institutions: the museum becomes a place where culture takes shape, and where a sense of community is strengthened.”

ES, much like every Triestine, has a special relationship with the Bora.

This East–North-East wind has been a constant presence in the magazine’s pages since its very first issue, its very first cover. Because the Bora is part of the Triestine way of life.

Today, this wind–so deeply woven into the city’s rhythms–becomes the subject of the first volume in the IES Trieste Lifestyle series. And how could it be otherwise, when the Bora hides in every corner of city life, slips into everything. Isn’t it, after all, the very soul of Trieste?

frontiere mobili, mani diverse che impastano la stessa tradizione.

Dal mondo contadino a quello urbano insomma, dal Collio al Carso, dal mare alla montagna, il mais rimane una presenza discreta ma significativa, un altro simbolo di resilienza e identità. Nella cucina del Friuli montano lo ritroviamo come involucro, quasi uno scrigno, della pitina, piccolo salume affumicato a forma di polpetta, a base di carne di capra, pecora e selvaggina, Presidio Slow Food: questa vera e propria –e deliziosamente unica– polpettina viene ricoperta da un sottile strato di farina di mais prima della stagionatura, un gesto antico di conservazione, diventato oggi racconto di saper fare e memoria. Nel Collio, il Molino Tuzzi rinnova il valore del mais attraverso una produzione artigianale e sostenibile di cereali, a filiera corta, recuperando varietà locali e macinature a pietra. La sua farina è profumata, viva, e racconta il territorio con la stessa pazienza di chi lo coltiva. A ricordarci che il paiòl non è un reperto da museo ma uno strumento vivo c’è La Subida - Ai Cacciatori, tra i riferimenti più solidi della cucina regionale, immersa nei boschi del Collio. è un rumore che appartiene tanto alle cucine contadine quanto alle sale cinematografiche: lo scoppiettare del mais. Un tempo era il suono della sopravvivenza - la polenta che sobbolliva lentamente nel paiòl, il paiolo di rame appeso al focolare, base quotidiana di un Nordest povero ma ingegnoso. Oggi è il suono del divertimento, del cinema, della condivisione. Dal paiòl alla busta di popcorn, il mais racconta un’Italia che ha trasformato la necessità in piacere.

La polenta è un piatto diffuso in molte regioni del Centro e Nord Italia e in molte aree montane, ognuna con le proprie varianti, consistenze e rituali. Nella nostra regione si passa dalle ricette montane a quelle lagunari –perché la polenta sa fare l’amore sia con le seppie che con la salsiccia– con farine di mais giallo e bianco, ognuna con la sua particolare voce. Anche nel territorio triestino il mais è parte di un racconto antico e di confine: è un ingrediente che attraversa stagioni e cucine, polenta ma anche zuppe. Ingredients (4 servings)

1 kg seppie fresche (pulite e tagliate a listarelle) 1 spicchio d’aglio 4 cucchiai olio extravergine ½ bicchiere vino bianco 2 cucchiai concentrato di pomodoro 300 ml passata di pomodoro prezzemolo tritato 250 g farina di mais Molino Tuzzi 1 l acqua Sale q.b.

1 kg fresh cuttlefish (cleaned and cut into strips) 1 garlic clove 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ½ glass white wine 2 tbsp tomato concentrate 300 ml tomato purée Chopped parsley 250 g Molino Tuzzi corn flour 1 L water Salt to taste

Rosolate l’aglio in olio, unite le seppie, sfumate con il vino e aggiungete il concentrato. Dopo qualche minuto aggiungere la passata, coprite e cuocete dolcemente per circa un’ora. Preparate la polenta versando la farina a pioggia nell’acqua salata in ebollizione e cuocendo per 45 minuti. A fine cottura delle seppie unite il prezzemolo e servite con un filo generoso di extravergine del territorio.

Un classico che profuma di mare e inverno. In primavera aggiungete al sugo anche piselli freschi a metà cottura!

Sauté the garlic in oil, add the cuttlefish, deglaze with wine and add the tomato concentrate. After a few minutes, add the tomato purée, cover and cook gently for about an hour.

Prepare the polenta by pouring the corn flour into salted boiling water and cooking for 45 minutes. At the end of cooking, stir the parsley into the cuttlefish and serve with a generous drizzle of local extra virgin olive oil. A classic that smells of sea and winter.

Anche il cinema, come il cibo, ha raccontato un’Italia fatta di sacrificio e rinascita. Le immagini di Riso amaro o Ladri di biciclette restituiscono la fame e la dignità di un Paese che cercava di rialzarsi: basta una ciotola di polenta fumante per evocare casa, resilienza, umanità. In Tutti a casa con Alberto Sordi (1960), un piatto semplice diventa rifugio, un momento di tregua nella confusione del dopoguerra: il cibo come ancora di salvezza, come ristoro psicologico prima che fisico, come desiderio di normalità.

Oggi, in tempi diversi ma con un’urgenza simile di significato, il mais torna a raccontare storie di identità e futuro. È ancora il filo che lega la terra alla tavola, la fame alla festa, il paiòl al popcorn una storia che scoppietta lenta, ma non si spegne mai. In fondo, cucinare e fare cinema non sono poi così diversi: entrambi richiedono tempo, fuoco e immaginazione. Entrambi nascono da un desiderio - quello di raccontare, di nutrire, di ricordare. E così, tra il rame lucido di un paiolo e il buio di una sala, il mais continua a brillare come una piccola, ostinata luce di speranza. La prossima volta che vi trovate in sala al cinema, guardando quel delizioso chicco di mais scoppiato, pensate a quanta strada abbiamo fatto, grazie a lui. È così che abbiamo pensato di collegare la cucina al cinema partendo da un chicco di mais e proponendovelo in due versioni: una tradizionale, con un classico della cucina del Nord Adriatico, le seppie in umido con polenta preparate con farina di mais Molino Tuzzi e seppie del Golfo, e una in chiave più giocosa, perfetta come snack per un film sotto le feste, accoccolati davanti al camino: un popcorn fatto in casa ma con una… marcia in più.

In fondo, cucinare e fare cinema non sono poi così diversi: entrambi richiedono tempo, fuoco e immaginazione.

T

here is a sound that belongs as much to rustic kitchens as it does to cinema halls: the crackling of corn. Once, it was the sound of survival – polenta bubbling slowly in the copper cauldron hanging over the hearth, the daily foundation of a poor yet inventive Northeast. Today, it is the sound of fun, cinema, and sharing. From the paiòl to the bag of popcorn, corn tells the story of an Italy that has turned necessity into pleasure.

Polenta is a dish found across many regions of central and northern Italy and in countless mountain areas, each with its own consistencies, rituals and variations. In our region, it ranges from mountain recipes to lagoon ones

–because polenta pairs beautifully with both cuttlefish and sausage –made with yellow or white corn flour, each with its own distinct personality. Even in the Trieste area, corn is part of an old, borderland story: an ingredient that crosses seasons and kitchens– polenta, but also soups. The most iconic is minestra de bobici, an Istrian dish prepared with fresh corn, beans and seasonal vegetables. A recipe that speaks of mixtures, shifting frontiers, and different hands shaping the same tradition.

From the countryside to urban life, from the Collio to the Karst, from sea to mountains, corn remains a quiet yet meaningful presence – another symbol of resilience and identity. In the kitchens of the Friulian mountains we also find corn used almost as a protective shell for pitina, the small smoked meatball made from goat, sheep or game, a Slow Food Presidium: this little gem is rolled in a fine layer of corn flour before ageing – an ancient gesture of preservation, now a story of skill and memory.

In the Collio, Molino Tuzzi renews the value of corn through an artisanal and sustainable production of grains, short supply chain, reviving local varieties and stone milling. Its flour is fragrant, alive, and tells the story of the land with the same patience as those who cultivate it. To remind us that the paiòl (cauldron) is not a museum relic but a living instrument, there is La Subida – Ai Cacciatori, one of the region’s most renowned kitchens nestled in the Collio’s woods. Here, every evening, a large copper paiolo bubbles beside the fire, ready to cook the polenta for dinner service.

Cinema, like food, has also told the story of an Italy built on sacrifice and rebirth. The images of Bitter Rice or Bicycle Thieves show the hunger and dignity of a country trying to stand up again: a steaming bowl of polenta is enough to evoke home, resilience, humanity. In Everybody Go Home with Alberto Sordi (1960), a simple dish becomes refuge – a moment of respite in the confusion of the postwar years: food as a lifeline, as psychological comfort

80 g mais per popcorn 2 cucchiai olio di semi 80 g zucchero 1 cucchiaio acqua 20 g burro Fior di sale di Pirano

80 g corn for popcorn 2 tbsp seed oil 80 g sugar 1 tbsp water 20 g butter Piran fleur de sel

Scaldate l’olio in una casseruola, aggiungete il mais e coprite: lasciate scoppiare i chicchi finché il rumore si affievolisce, scuotendo spesso la pentola. In un pentolino fate caramellare lo zucchero con l’acqua senza mescolare; quando diventa ambrato togliete dal fuoco e unite il burro e una presa abbondante fior di sale e mescolare bene. Versate subito il caramello sui popcorn caldi e mescolate con una spatola oliata.

Stendete su carta da forno e lasciate raffreddare: avrete uno snack croccante, con un equilibrio dolce-salato e un accenno minerale che ricorda il mare.

Heat the oil in a pot, add the corn and cover: let the kernels pop until the sound fades, shaking the pan often.

In a small saucepan, caramelise the sugar with the water without stirring; when it turns amber, remove from heat and add the butter and a generous pinch of fleur de sel. Mix well.Pour the caramel over the hot popcorn and fold gently with an oiled spatula.

Spread on baking paper and let cool: you’ll have a crunchy snack with a sweetsalty balance and a subtle mineral note that recalls the sea.

Today, in different times but with a similar need for meaning, corn once again tells stories of identity and future.

It is still the thread that binds land to table, hunger to celebration, the paiòl to the popcorn – a story that crackles slowly, but never goes out.

In the end, cooking and filmmaking aren’t so different: both require time, heat and imagination. Both are born from a desire – to tell, to nourish, to remember. And so, between the bright copper of a paiolo and the darkness of a movie theatre, corn continues to shine like a small, stubborn light of hope. Next time you sit down at the cinema, looking at that delicious popped kernel, think of the journey it has taken – and the journey it has allowed us to take with it.

That’s why we decided to link cooking and cinema starting from a single kernel of corn, and to offer it in two forms: one traditional, with a classic of North Adriatic cuisine –cuttlefish stew with polenta made using Molino Tuzzi corn flour and cuttlefish from the Gulf– and one more playful, perfect as a holiday movie snack, curled up by the fireplace: homemade popcorn with a little… extra sparkle.

Trieste: set di parole e note Trieste è una città che non si offre mai tutta insieme: preferisce svelarsi a frammenti, come un romanzo letto in controluce. A ispirare autori e musicisti non sono soltanto i suoi scorci più celebri, ma soprattutto quei luoghi che evocano un passato di incontri, idee e multiculturalità. Nei primi del Novecento, tra sale luminose e tavolini affollati, il caffè era molto più di una bevanda: era un linguaggio comune, un pretesto per discutere, un ponte naturale tra mondi che convivevano nello stesso porto. Da quella miscela di accenti, profumi e sguardi sono nate sensibilità letterarie che ancora oggi definiscono il carattere della città.

Una città che ispira La Trieste che continua a ispirare è fatta di strade che scendono rapide verso l’acqua, di salite improvvise che aprono il panorama come un sipario, di edifici che conservano tracce di epoche sovrapposte. Sono luoghi reali ma evocati, riconoscibili a chi li vive: angoli dove il vento cambia ogni conversazione, cortili che trattengono voci lontane, vie in cui il tempo sembra rallentare. È in questa cornice che la città diventa set naturale, capace di accogliere personaggi inquieti, memorie instabili e racconti che cercano un punto di partenza.

Trieste in musica Anche la musica ha colto questa vibrazione. In “Trieste”, Lucio Corsi ritrae una città esposta, fragile, battuta dal vento ma irresistibile nella sua autenticità. In “Luce (tramonti a nordest)”, Elisa recupera un altro suo tratto inconfondibile: quei tramonti che incendiando il golfo trasformano ogni sguardo in una scena sospesa. È un momento quotidiano che meriterebbe più spazio nel cinema: pochi luoghi sanno offrire una luce così nitida e malinconica, capace di tingere la città di un silenzio che sembra chiedere di essere scritto.

A city that inspires The Trieste that continues to inspire is made of streets that tumble quickly towards the water, sudden climbs that open up the view like a curtain lifting, buildings that preserve traces of overlapping eras. These are real yet evocative places, recognisable to those who inhabit them: corners where the wind shifts every conversation, courtyards that hold on to distant voices, streets where time seems to slow. It is within this frame that the city becomes a natural film set,

ready to welcome restless characters, unstable memories and stories searching for a point of departure.

Trieste in music Music, too, has captured this vibration. In Trieste, Lucio Corsi portrays a city exposed, fragile, wind-beaten yet irresistible in its authenticity. In Luce (tramonti a nordest), Elisa retrieves another unmistakable trait: those sunsets that set the gulf ablaze, turning every glance into a suspended scene. It is a daily moment that would deserve more space in cinema: few places offer such clear, melancholy light, capable of colouring the city with a silence that seems to ask to be written.

A set that lives on its own Trieste is a spontaneous set: it doesn’t prepare itself, it doesn’t dress up, it doesn’t construct anything. Trieste: a stage of words and music Trieste is a city that never reveals itself all at once: it prefers to appear in fragments, like a novel read against the light. What inspires writers and musicians are not only its most iconic views, but above all those places that evoke a past of encounters, ideas and multicultural life. The tourism board of Villach, in Austria, is offering a unique opportunity: from 13 to 17 July 2026, as part of the BARÇA Academy Camp, boys and girls aged 7 to 16 will be able to take part in a five-day camp featuring up to four training sessions a day. The coaches will be trainers from “La Masia”, FC Barcelona’s renowned youth academy – one of the most prestigious football schools in the world. True to the club’s motto més que un club (“more than a club”), the programme will focus not only on technical development, but also on teamwork and personal growth.

Participants will have access to a free shuttle service from the Thermenhotel Karawankenhof and the Hotel Warmbaderhof to the training ground, the Landskron sports centre.

And while the young players train, their families can unwind in the saunas and pools of KärntenTherme, or book one of the exclusive treatments from the “VIBE” natural cosmetics line.

Gorizia sta per nascere la DAG – Digital Art Gallery, la galleria d’arte digitale immersiva più grande d’Europa. Mille metri quadrati di superficie digitale, 300 metri di percorso sotterraneo, di cui 100 completamente rivestiti da LED di ultima generazione: la storica Galleria Bombi, nata in epoca asburgica e usata come rifugio antiaereo, diventa oggi un tunnel di luce e immagini che porta la città nel futuro.

DAG è uno dei lasciti più forti di GO! 2025, l’anno della Capitale europea della Cultura condivisa con Nova Gorica: da luogo di attraversamento a esperienza, da “passaggio veloce” a tappa obbligata per chi ama arte, tecnologia e architettura. Grazie a un importante intervento di rigenerazione urbana, Galleria Bombi è stata messa in sicurezza, riqualificata e dotata di un impressionante LEDwall curvo che avvolge pareti e soffitto, accompagnato da un sistema audio progettato per un suono uniforme lungo tutto il percorso. Il risultato è uno spazio multisensoriale dove luci, suoni e immagini trasformano la camminata in un viaggio.

n Gorizia, DAG – the Digital Art Gallery – is about to come to life: the largest immersive digital art gallery in Europe. One thousand square metres of digital surfaces, 300 metres of underground passageway, with 100 metres fully clad in next-generation LEDs. The historic Galleria Bombi, built in the Habsburg era and later used as an air-raid shelter, is being transformed into a tunnel of light and images that propels the city into the future.

DAG is one of the most significant legacies of GO! 2025, the European Capital of Culture shared with Nova Gorica: a shift from a mere passageway to a true experience, from a “quick shortcut” to an essential stop for anyone who loves art, technology and architecture. Thanks to a major urban regeneration project, Galleria Bombi has been made safe, restored and equipped with an impressive curved LED wall wrapping its walls and ceiling, supported by an audio system designed to deliver perfectly even sound throughout the entire route. The result is a multisensory space where lights, sounds and images turn a simple walk into a journey.

Opening the DAG in mid-December 2025 will be Data Tunnel, a large site-specific installation by Refik Anadol, a global star of digital art and pioneer of data aesthetics, featured at the MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Palazzo Strozzi and the spectacular Sphere in Las Vegas. For Gorizia, the artist has created a continuous visual flow running through the entire tunnel like a living digital organism: organic, ever-changing forms generated by his Large Nature Model, an artificial-intelligence system trained on millions of images of forests, oceans, ecosystems and international scientific archives. Here, data from nature becomes pigment, light, memory – and technology becomes a way to speak about the environment, the care of the planet and the connections between people.

DAG is a public space, free of charge and open to everyone, designed to welcome visitors into the world of immersive languages: there’s no need to “understand digital art” – just let yourself be enveloped by images and sound as you walk through a landscape in constant transformation. Whether you’re a new-media-art enthusiast, a curious visitor exploring the Gorizia area, or a traveller following the GO! 2025 programme, Galleria Bombi is a mustsee – a chance to step inside the digital dreams of nature.

qui, attraversando serpentine sulla neve candida, si sale verso la Forcella Morareto. I più esperti, proseguendo, raggiungono il Rifugio Marinelli, un balcone spettacolare sulle Alpi Carniche, dove la vastità del panorama ripagano ogni fatica, rendendo l’esperienza unica.

Nel Tarvisiano, percorsi come la Val Bartolo invitano le famiglie in un “mare di bianco”. Da Camporosso la valle si stende in una strada silenziosa lungo il torrente Bartolo dove le baite e i piccoli ponti creano scenari da fiaba.

Il Saisera Wild Track, invece, si snoda tra abeti che conservano appesi brevi pensieri che invitano a riflettere.

Il percorso con le tracce della Prima Guerra Mondiale racconta anche le storie di uomini vissuti tra i monti. Al termine però una baita accoglie i camminatori con una dolce ricompensa: dolci e cioccolata calda!

Infine, i Laghi di Fusine sono uno scenario fiabesco. Gli specchi d’acqua ghiacciati sono circondati da boschi silenziosi e pascoli innevati dove il cielo si riflette sulle superfici gelate come in un quadro. L’escursione dal Lago Superiore al Rifugio Zacchi regala panorami mozzafiato Giulie e la sensazione di camminare all’interno di un paesaggio da cartolina.

Il percorso, compatto e ben segnalato, è ideale per famiglie che vogliono vivere la magia della neve passo dopo passo.

Tra Tarvisiano e Carnia, la montagna invernale è il luogo ideale per avvicinare i più piccoli al fascino della neve che giocando, passo dopo passo, diventano dei piccoli esploratori.

Tra boschi innevati e radure luminose, le ciaspole e il nordic walking offrono un’alternativa lenta allo sci. Le montagne imbiancate si lasciano esplorare con calma, rivelando dettagli che sfuggono a chi sfreccia sulle piste; il gioco di luci sulla neve, le impronte degli animali, il respiro della natura incontaminata.

Ciaspolare diventa un’esperienza di immersione totale, un viaggio semplice e intenso che regala emozioni a ogni passo, sotto i piedi il mondo scricchiola.

Tra Tarvisiano e Carnia, le Alpi raccontano storie di uomini e luoghi a chi sa ascoltare e lungo percorsi adatti a tutti invitano a una full imersion nella natura.

A Forni Avoltri, porta delle Alpi Carniche, numerosi itinerari si distinguono per bellezza e accessibilità. Da Pierabech alla Malga Bordaglia Bassa, il sentiero sale dolcemente tra abeti e radure illuminate, offrendo ampie vedute sul vallone del Rio Bordaglia. La traccia, regolare e ben leggibile anche in inverno, conduce fino alla casera, che appare come un piccolo balcone naturale affacciato sulle cime circostanti regalando pause fotografiche e momenti di contemplazione. Perfetta per le famiglie abituate a camminare, questa escursione regala la quiete del bosco e il fascino dei paesaggi immacolati.

Un altro itinerario prende vita dal Rifugio Tolazzi, raggiungibile in macchina da Forni Avoltri. Calzate le ciaspe, il percorso segue la strada sterrata lungo il Rio Morareto fino all’ampio e soleggiato Piano dei Buoi. Da

n the silent heart of winter, walking slowly becomes an invitation to rediscover the mountains in their most authentic form. Among snow-covered woods and bright clearings, snowshoeing and Nordic walking offer a slower alternative to skiing. The white peaks reveal themselves unhurriedly, showing details that escape those who race down the slopes: the play of light on the snow, the tracks of wildlife, the breathing of untouched nature.

Snowshoeing becomes a fully immersive experience – a simple yet intense journey that offers emotion with every step, the world crunching softly beneath your feet.

Between the Tarvisio area and Carnia, the Alps whisper stories of people and places to those who know how to listen, inviting everyone –along routes suitable for all– to a full immersion in nature.

In Forni Avoltri, gateway to the Carnic Alps, numerous trails stand out for their beauty and accessibility. From Pierabech to Malga Bordaglia Bassa, the path rises gently through fir trees and sunlit clearings, opening onto wide views over the Rio Bordaglia valley. The track, steady and easy to follow even in winter, leads to the casera, which appears like a small natural balcony overlooking the surrounding peaks, offering perfect moments for photos and quiet contemplation. Ideal for families used to walking, this excursion combines the calm of the forest with the charm of pristine landscapes.

Another route begins at Rifugio Tolazzi (reachable by car from Forni Avoltri). Once the snowshoes are on, the trail follows the dirt road along the Rio Morareto to the wide, sunny plateau of Piano dei Buoi. From here, winding across white serpentine tracks, you climb towards Forcella Morareto. More experienced walkers can continue to Rifugio Marinelli, a spectacular balcony over the Carnic Alps, where the sweep of the panorama repays every effort and makes the experience truly unique.

In the Tarvisio area, routes such as Val Bartolo welcome families into a “sea of white”. Starting from Camporosso, the valley stretches along a quiet road

beside the Bartolo stream, where alpine huts and small bridges create fairytale scenes.

The Saisera Wild Track winds instead through fir trees where short reflections are hung like tiny notes, inviting walkers to pause and think. Along the route, traces of the First World War tell stories of the men who lived among these mountains. And at the end, a mountain hut awaits, ready to reward walkers with sweets and hot chocolate.

Finally, the Fusine Lakes offer a truly enchanted setting. The frozen waters are surrounded by silent woods and snow-covered meadows where the sky reflects on the icy surfaces like a painting. The walk from the Upper Lake to Rifugio Zacchi reveals breathtaking views of the Julian Alps and that rare sense of stepping inside a postcard.

orld-class skiing is heading back to Tarvisio. On 17 and 18 January 2026, the Valcanale resort will host, for the fourth time, the queens of speed from the Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup. Two spectacular races – downhill and super-G – will unfold on the longest and most dramatic course of the entire circuit, the “Di Prampero” piste that sweeps from Monte Lussari down to the valley.

It promises to be a breathless weekend, with the athletes of the “white circus” battling for precious points in the run-up to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

ra le montagne innevate della Valcanale, quando il fascino dell’inverno avvolge la natura, ritorna l’appuntamento invernale con “CamporossoRacconta”, la rassegna letteraria realizzata dal Consorzio Agrario Vicinia Camporosso, con il contributo della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, del BIM e del Comune di Tarvisio.

“In punta di parole”, in programma il 3 e il 4 gennaio in Viottolo Florianca 1, è il fil rouge di questa edizione, un invito a ritrovare il gusto del racconto in un ambiente caldo e accogliente. Dopo una giornata sulle piste o una passeggiata nei boschi, c’è un altro modo per scaldarsi: ascoltare storie, lasciarsi portare dentro i mondi che le parole sanno creare.

Tra gli ospiti di questa edizione spiccano Enrico Marchetto, che nel suo “Confessioni di un marketer: Le logiche pubblicitarie di Facebook e Instagram” svela con ironia e consapevolezza i meccanismi nascosti della comunicazione digitale. Rino Lombardi, presidente dell’Associazione Culturale Museo della Bora, presenta “Bora. Quel gran vento di Trieste” (La collana di IES, Prandicom).

Almerigo Alessandro Hofmann, autore de “I forestali oggi non capiscono”, ci riporta invece nel cuore dei boschi, tra natura, memoria e umanità. Francesco De Filippo, con “Di pianeti e di uomini.

In dialogo con Francesco De Filippo”.

Di Andrea Camilleri, apre uno sguardo emozionante sul pensiero e sull’eredità del grande maestro siciliano.

Spazio poi ad autori locali, con storie che riattraversano la memoria come la raccolta di poesie “La voce del cuore” di Elisabetta Errath (Vicinia e LCA) e il libro “La valigia di cartone” (Gaspari) di Vito Anselmi, già sindaco di Tarvisio e originario del Salento.

Ma CamporossoRacconta non dimentica le nuove generazioni: tra gli appuntamenti di sabato 3 gennaio, anche uno spazio dedicato ai bambini.

Erica Barbiani, produttrice cinematografica e scrittrice (in concorso qualche anno fa alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia con il documentario “Wishing on a Star”) presenterà il suo ultimo libro “Thea e l’invecchiatore del Dottor Loss” (Giunti). Ma ci sarà anche una giovanissima esordiente di soli undici anni, Viola Benedetti, pronta a condividere la sua prima storia “Tre mesi per salvare il mondo” (Vicinia e LCA). A Camporosso, d’inverno, le parole sanno ancora scaldare: piccole fiamme di curiosità e bellezza che illuminano la valle.

mid the snow-covered mountains of the Valcanale, when winter’s charm wraps itself around the landscape, the seasonal appointment with CamporossoRacconta returns – the literary festival organised by the Consorzio Agrario Vicinia Camporosso, with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, BIM and the Municipality of Tarvisio.

In punta di parole, taking place on 3 and 4 January at Viottolo Florianca 1, is the thread running through this year’s edition, an invitation to rediscover the pleasure of storytelling in a warm, welcoming setting. After a day on the slopes or a walk through the woods, there is another way to warm up: listening to stories, letting yourself be carried into the worlds that words can create.

Among the guests of this edition is Enrico Marchetto who, in his Confessioni

Rino Lombardi, president of the cultural association Museo della Bora, presents Bora. Quel gran vento di Trieste (La collana di IES, Prandicom). Almerigo Alessandro Hofmann, author of I forestali oggi non capiscono, takes us back into the heart of the woods, between nature, memory and humanity. Francesco De Filippo, with Di pianeti e di uomini. In dialogo con Francesco De Filippo. Di Andrea Camilleri, opens an emotional window onto the thought and legacy of the great Sicilian master.

There is also space for local authors, with works that retrace memory: the poetry collection La voce del cuore by Elisabetta Errath (Vicinia and LCA) and La valigia di cartone (Gaspari) by Vito Anselmi, former mayor of Tarvisio and originally from Salento.

But CamporossoRacconta does not forget the younger generations: among the events on Saturday 3 January is a moment dedicated to children. Erica Barbiani, film producer and writer (whose documentary Wishing on a Star was in competition a few years ago at the Venice Film Festival), will present her latest book, Thea e l’invecchiatore del Dottor Loss (Giunti). There will also be a very young debut author, eleven-yearold Viola Benedetti, ready to share her first story, Tre mesi per salvare il mondo (Vicinia and LCA).

In Camporosso, in winter, words still know how to warm: small flames of curiosity and beauty that light up the valley.

— Trieste and tourism, between past and future

Era il 1945 quando Giorgio Cividin, mio padre, mise per la prima volta piede in via Imbriani 11 a Trieste, la sede storica dell’UTAT, la prima agenzia viaggi della città, poi diventata Cividin Viaggi. Era l’immediato dopoguerra, e l’agenzia organizzava viaggi con camion attrezzati e torpedoni. Quando io stessa entrai in azienda trent’anni più tardi prenotavamo gli hotels sfogliando annuari giganteschi e mandavamo le conferme con il telex. In aereo si fumava e le navi da crociera avevano tre diverse classi.

In viaggio, facevamo le foto attenti a non esagerare, perché ogni rullino di scatti ne aveva soltanto 24 o 36. In viaggio, cercavamo le cabine telefoniche per dire che eravamo arrivati.

Spedivamo le cartoline e le collezionavamo.

Tanto è cambiato in questi 80 anni, con il turismo che è diventato un’industria che muove più di un miliardo di persone. Dal ponte di comando della Cividin Viaggi continuo a veder scorrere rapidamente questa rivoluzione nel turismo e la osservo da vicino anche nella nostra Trieste.

Strade piene di turisti con il telefonino in mano per cercare di orientarsi, piazze magnifiche con troppi tavoli e pizzerie. Una città che affascina, ma che subisce il turismo e non lo governa.

Trieste è sempre stata una città in costante equilibrio tra vecchio e nuovo, in bilico tra un passato continuamente presente e in perenne dubbio su quale sia il suo futuro migliore. Un ruolo strategico per il suo porto, traguardo quasi raggiunto e poi lasciato andare? Una presenza scientifica importante che mai ha avuto impatto reale sulla città? Incompiuto è anche il turismo.

Per costruire un’industria basata sul turismo, ai tramonti mozzafiato o ai magnifici sentieri di collina bisogna aggiungere organizzazione, strategia e visione a lungo termine. Trieste deve farlo se dal turismo vuole ottenere delle ricadute economiche importanti per la città ed offrire opportunità preziose ai suoi giovani. Deve farlo per chi sarà qui fra altri 80 anni.

It was 1945 when my father, Giorgio Cividin, first set foot in Via Imbriani 11 in Trieste – the historic headquarters of UTAT, the city’s first travel agency, later to become Cividin Viaggi. It was right after the war, and the agency organised journeys on converted lorries and open-top coaches. When I joined the company thirty years later, we booked hotels by leafing through enormous directories and sent confirmations by telex. People smoked on planes, and cruise ships had three separate classes. When we travelled, we took photographs sparingly because each roll of film had only 24 or 36 shots. On the road, we hunted for phone boxes to let someone know we’d arrived. We sent postcards – and we collected them.

So much has changed in these 80 years, with tourism now an industry that moves more than a billion people. From the helm of Cividin Viaggi I keep watching this rapid evolution, and I see it close-up in our own Trieste. Streets crowded with tourists, phones in hand, trying to find their bearings; magnificent squares packed with too many tables and pizzerias. A city that enchants, yet one that undergoes tourism rather than guiding it.

Trieste has always been a place suspended between old and new, poised between a past that never quite recedes and a perennial uncertainty about what its best future could be. A strategic role for its port – a goal almost reached, then allowed to slip away? A major scientific presence that has never truly shaped the life of the city?

Tourism, too, remains unfinished. To build a real tourism industry, breathtaking sunsets and beautiful hillside paths are not enough: what’s needed is organisation, strategy and long-term vision. Trieste must embrace this if it wants tourism to bring meaningful economic benefits to the city and create valuable opportunities for its young people. It must do so for those who will be here in another 80 years.
