Where Fashion Trends Are Born Written by Gigi Fernandez Photography and Concept: Jeniffer Guzman Fashion trends are at a high level at the beginning of every season, but what are the origins of the trends that dominate our streets, parties, and instagram accounts? Many times, fashion is dictated by those who are on top of their game, be it in film, music, or even politics. But going even further, the best vessel designers have to showcase the new trends is the runway. Like with everything else, Miami is a blend of fashion styles unique to our climate and cultural opportunities. With that in mind, I would like to take a moment to look back at one of the events that many fashionistas from the Americas and the Caribbean utilize to showcase their art: Dominicana Moda.

Dominicana Moda has, for a long time, been an excellent way for renowned and talented designers, such as Giannina Azar, to showcase their exquisite art. Known for her colorful and playful, yet sophisticated designs, Giannina has become a staple of the event, and her shows are always booked solid from the very beginning. Other talented designers, like the innovator Jusef Sanchez, bring a fresh and modern approach to the runway. This is like honey to fashion bloggers, models, photographers, and fashionistas alike; the ambiance is pure decadence as everyone feels free to express their love for fashion. As an international affair, many enjoy a plethora of talent from countries such as Puerto Rico, Spain, Honduras, Haiti, France and others. A true enterprise, organizers make sure that all representatives have an opportunity to showcase their trade, and an excellent benefit is that young students are exposed to the kind of success and love for the art that fuels their passion to better their skills.

However, not all is fun and fashion; as a conscious entity, Dominicana Moda takes on a social responsibility and donates a large part of their income to over 50 non-profit institutions in the Dominican Republic. Organizations like Fundacion Amigos Contra el Cancer Infantil benefit from this initiative, creating a legacy and an excellent example to follow.

For our last edition, SW The Magazine traveled to a lush tropical paradise to be a part of this most significant fashion event. Created a decade ago, Dominicana Moda provides a platform for designers, models, producers, and clients alike. For their 10 year anniversary, the game has been brought to a new level, and this was most obvious when the featured designer was announced. None other than iconic Jean Paul Gaultier would bring his fashionable threads and designs to the tropical runways of Santo Domingo.

El joven y talentoso diseñador Jusef Sánchez se destacó por la exquisita propuesta ofrecida.

Last year, much of the event was dedicated to fashion icon and beloved Dominican designer Oscar De La Renta. On the anniversary of his death, Mr. De La Renta’s legacy was celebrated by the industry. A whole show was dedicated to him by students who were inspired by his designs to create their own. Other young students were welcomed to share their messages to him as a final farewell, in a most suitable manner: written on dresses featured as an exhibit.

The event culminated as the model and actress, Omhyra Mota, opened the show for Jean Paul Gaultier. Mr, Gaultier celebrated the diversity of his design and our culture as he danced along his runway to the tune of Juan Luis Guerra. A fusion of fashion, music, culture, and talent, it certainly left us excited to see what Dominicana Moda 2016 has in store for us.
