Across the Northern Beaches, volunteers are the quiet force behind local grass-roots clubs and inclusive communities. They coach. They organise. They step up, often when no one else will. The Pittwater Community Excellence Awards were created to shine a light on these individuals—not for grand gestures, but for consistent, meaningful contributions that make a difference.
“We’re incredibly proud to recognise the volunteers who are building stronger communities from the ground up,” said Jason Manning, CEO of Pittwater RSL. “These are people who don’t seek recognition but absolutely deserve it. Their time, care, and commitment are what make our community stronger.”
Below are the Q1 nominees—each with a unique story, and each contributing to something greater than themselves.
As proud sponsors of the Pittwater Tigers Junior AFL Club, we’re making a Captain’s Call to nominate someone whose impact deserves recognition: Skye Rose.
Skye came to our attention through the Tigers' Kickability Program, which offers children with disabilities the chance to belong, play AFL, and shine within their community. Her dedication, warmth, and energy in creating an inclusive environment is nothing short of inspiring.
But Skye’s commitment doesn’t stop at the footy field. She also leads the Dippers program at Mona Vale SLSC, providing beach-based activities for kids with autism and other disabilities—mirroring the Nippers experience in a supportive, adapted way.
As a mum caring for a child with autism, Skye brings deep empathy and lived experience to her volunteering. From the sidelines to the sand, she shows what real community spirit looks like. It’s humbling and a privilege to witness her work.
Lexie Le Blang has been an active member of Mona Vale SLSC since 2011 and consistently represents the club’s values of inclusion, respect, and community.
So far this season, she has already completed over 80 hours of patrols, helping to keep our beaches safe and welcoming for everyone. Lexie also plays a key role in training our SRC youth members and contributes to the club’s inclusion programs, training sessions, and carnivals.
She’s always willing to help—often the first to arrive and the last to leave—and takes on every task with a practical and positive attitude. When problems come up, Lexie looks for solutions and keeps the focus on supporting others.
Her efforts have been recognised at Branch level for her actions in rescue and first aid situations. Lexie brings steady energy to everything she does, and her presence makes a real difference to the people around her.
Pittwater Baseball Club is proud to nominate the Page family for this quarter’s Community Excellence Award. Since moving to Warriewood from the United States in 2013, the Pages have become central to our club and community.
Katie, Jayson, Jocelyn, Jaxon, and Kolton have each contributed in meaningful ways. All three children have played for the club, with Jocelyn and Jaxon also representing at higher levels. Jayson has taken on a key behind-the-scenes role—helping with day-to-day club operations and providing steady support and advice. His knowledge of the game and willingness to help has made a big difference.
Katie manages uniforms, merchandise, and umpires, and both she and Jaxon regularly umpire on weekends. She and Jayson also serve on the club committee. Between them, they’ve coached multiple teams and supported players at every level.
The Page family has taken on nearly every role the club has to offer over the years. Their contribution has been consistent, generous, and deeply appreciated. We’re lucky they chose to make Pittwater Baseball Club part of their Australian home.
Warringah Rugby Club is pleased to nominate Phil Jackson in recognition of his long-standing contribution as a volunteer.
Phil has been a steady presence at the club for many years, taking on the roles of Player Welfare Manager and Game Day Controller. Each Saturday during the season, he spends around 8 hours
at the Main Table, helping to ensure that teams and match officials follow the rules and that games run smoothly.
His calm approach, eye for detail, and clear understanding of the competition guidelines make him a key part of our game day operations. Phil’s support helps players and officials stay focused and feel respected, which contributes to a better experience for everyone involved.
Phil’s quiet dedication and consistency set a great example of what community sport is all about.
The Narrabeen Sharks Junior Rugby League Club is proud to nominate Matt Hough for his long-standing contribution as a coach.
Matt has now coached the same team for 12 consecutive years, starting when the boys were just four years old. As they move into the Under 16s, Matt continues to guide and support them with the same steady commitment he began with.
His focus has always been on more than just the game—he encourages teamwork, supports the boys’ development off the field, and stays connected with past players. Matt also helps foster a strong team culture, organising casual get-togethers like pizza nights after training to build connection.
The Sharks have been part of the Pittwater community since 1932, and volunteers like Matt are key to what keeps the club thriving. His consistency, care, and quiet leadership make him a valued and deserving nominee.
The Newport Breakers Rugby Club is proud to nominate Alan Jones (AJ) for this quarter's Community Excellence Award, recognising his lifelong dedication and invaluable contributions to our club.
Now in his 70s, AJ's association with Newport Breakers spans several decades, beginning as a junior player and progressing through to the senior ranks. Notably, he was a member of the 1999 Kentwell Cup-winning team, achieving the highest honour in NSW Suburban Rugby and marking the only time our club has secured this prestigious title. Newport Rugby
Beyond his playing achievements, AJ has been a cornerstone of our club's leadership. He served as President, and currently holds the position of Vice President, acting as the strategic mind behind many of our initiatives. His commitment is further exemplified by his roles as Ground Marshall and scorer, attending every game throughout the season to ensure smooth operations.
AJ's reputation extends beyond Newport; he commands immense respect across all clubs within the NSW Suburban Rugby community and among the governing body at NSW Suburban Rugby headquarters in Darceyville, South Sydney.
Alan Jones embodies the spirit of community and volunteerism that the Pittwater Community Excellence
Awards seek to honour. His unwavering dedication and leadership have left an indelible mark on the Newport Breakers Rugby Club and the broader rugby community.
Pittwater Memorial Women’s Bowling Club – Sue Lewis
Pittwater Memorial Ladies Bowls Club is proud to nominate Sue Lewis for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award, in recognition of her longstanding contribution and leadership within our club.
Sue has been an active member for many years, generously giving her time across a variety of roles, including as a former Club President. Currently, she serves as Head of the Match Committee—coordinating both social and competition match days—and Head of Selectors, where she ensures members understand game rules and feel confident on the green.
Her support doesn’t stop there. Sue assists with coaching, helping new bowlers find their footing while also designing training drills to support the development of our pennant and emerging players. Her thoughtful guidance helps everyone—from beginners to seasoned competitors—feel valued and improve their game.
Sue is also a qualified umpire, regularly volunteering her time at club events and local tournaments, including pennants and championships. On top of her many roles, she competes as the skip of our topgraded pennant team, leading by example with skill and grace.
Sue’s calm presence, deep knowledge, and generous spirit make her a vital part of our club and a wonderful ambassador for the sport of bowls in the Pittwater community.
Trish Pockley is the kind of volunteer every grassroots club dreams of. As Peninsula Cricket Club’s Child Safety Officer, Trish has played a critical role in ensuring the club meets—and often exceeds—child safety requirements. From keeping compliance up to date on the club’s website to briefing the committee with regular updates, she brings rigour, responsibility and heart to an incredibly important role.
But Trish doesn’t stop there. She’s also team manager for the Under 13s Thunder, where she keeps the wheels turning on game day—organising scorers, umpires and even making sure the oranges and snakes are ready post-match. She's gone above and beyond to create additional playing opportunities for the team, including entering them into a midweek comp and coordinating a carnival weekend over Australia Day.
Her communication skills, creative thinking and quiet commitment to recognising and celebrating every player’s effort have made her a pillar of the club. Trish is a standout example of the power of community sport— and the people who make it possible.

Meet the LEGO master bringing imagination to life at Pittwater RSL
What started as a love of LEGO has grown into a full-time business — and a travelling celebration of creativity, colour, and childhood joy. Through his company, Playwell Events, one passionate
builder has transformed his playful obsession into an immersive experience the whole community can soak up. From towering castles to pixel-perfect mosaics, his jawdropping displays are designed to spark imagination and leave both kids and grown-ups wideeyed with wonder.
It all began back in 2018 with a modest charity show in Wollongong. He expected a small turnout. Instead, over 4,000 people walked through the doors, and more than $21,000 was raised for a local children’s charity. That weekend lit the fuse for something bigger. Since then,
he’s raised over $290,000 in cash — and donated tens of thousands more in LEGO sets to charities across NSW.
But while the mission began with giving back, the real joy now comes from taking the magic of LEGO to places that rarely get this kind of event. Regional towns like Dubbo, Tamworth and Shepparton have welcomed his shows with open arms. “People always say, ‘Thank you for coming — nothing like this ever comes to our town.’ That’s what makes it worth it.”
Every event is a feat of planning and passion. It takes 7–8 hours just to set up, and behind the scenes he’s always working on 2–3 new builds at once to keep things fresh. His latest showstopper? A massive LEGO castle made from over 110,000 pieces — his most ambitious build to date. There’s no one way to build, he says. Some creations start with purchased plans from worldclass designers, others are reimagined dioramas of classic
sets, and the rest are pure originals — MOCs, or “My Own Creations” — straight from his imagination to the exhibition floor.
While architecture themes are a personal favourite, he’s recently fallen in love with building intricate LEGO mosaics. “I always say my favourite build is the last one I did — there’s just something so satisfying about seeing something new take shape.”
His love for the brick runs deep. In fact, in 2016 he was one of just 140 people worldwide
invited to attend the LEGO Inside Tour in Billund, Denmark — a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse at the original LEGO factory, often described as the Willy Wonka tour for LEGO fans. Now, he’s bringing that same sense of awe to Pittwater RSL, and everyone’s invited.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or simply LEGO-curious, this is your chance to experience the magic up close, meet the maker, and rediscover the joy of playful creativity. One brick at a time.
