SURF LIFE SAVING Beach Safety

Pittwater RSL is proud to support surf lifesaving across the Northern Beaches, sponsoring the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) programs at Warriewood, Mona Vale, North Narrabeen, and South Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Clubs.

We all enjoy a day at the beach and as the weather is now getting warmer it is time to get out the cozzies and dig out those boogie boards from the back of the garage. Whilst it is great to see the red and yellow flags back up on the beach, here are some great tips to make sure that you have fun at the beach and go home safely!

ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED & YELLOW FLAGS.

Lifesavers place the flags where it is safe to swim, and they will be observing this area and will notice if you need help.

LOOK FOR BEACH SAFETY SIGNS.

Lifesavers place signs on the beach to let you know of any dangers that may be present –make sure you look for these signs before you go into the water. It is also important that you are aware of your own limitations.

NEVER SWIM ALONE.

Always swim with a friend or an adult and never go into the water by yourself. If you are out alone, always make sure to swim between the red and yellow flags where the Lifesavers can see you and make sure you tell someone where you are going before you leave home and before you enter the water.

IF YOU GET INTO TROUBLE IN THE WATER, STAY CALM AND RAISE YOUR ARM.

Getting caught out in the ocean where you cannot touch the bottom can be scary but remember to stay calm and raise your arm for help. Try to float and if you feel you are being pulled away from the shore avoid trying to swim against the current – this will only make you tired and unable to stay afloat.

We are extremely fortunate that a majority of our beaches are patrolled. Across NSW more than 20,000 surf lifesavers dedicate their time each year during the peak season to make sure beach goers can enjoy the surf in safety at patrolled beaches.

Introducing the Q4 Winners of the Pittwater Community Excellence Awards

From the bowls green to the rugby field, the baseball diamond to the surf club, and the motor enthusiast community, this quarter’s nominees reflect the diverse and vibrant spirit of Pittwater. Each individual, whether managing finances, mentoring juniors, volunteering behind the scenes, or advocating for inclusivity, has made an exceptional impact on their clubs and communities.

Nominee: Lorraine Loftus Pittwater Memorial Women’s Bowls Club

Lorraine Loftus has been a dedicated treasurer of Pittwater Memorial Women’s Bowls Club for many years, ensuring the club’s financial stability through her hard work and attention to detail. Beyond managing finances, Lorraine actively supports club events and serves on the Working Committee for amalgamation. A talented bowler, she has represented the club at State events, showcasing her passion for the sport. Her commitment and multifaceted contributions make her a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.

Nominee: Richie Goodwin Pittwater Baseball Club

Richie Goodwin plays a vital leadership role in the Pittwater Prospects programme, coaching and mentoring the club’s youngest players aged 4–7. A former junior player himself, Richie combines his teaching expertise and passion for baseball to pass on essential skills like throwing, catching, and hitting. His dedication to nurturing young talent and fostering a love for the sport has a lasting impact on the club, making him a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.

Nominee: Ross Cordukes Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association (PMEA)

Ross Cordukes is a vital contributor to the Pittwater Motor Enthusiasts Association, supporting the club through numerous volunteer roles despite not being on the committee. He manages attendance records for meetings and events, tracks vehicle participation, and oversees the Michael Andrews Memorial Trophy points system. Ross also represents PMEA at Confederation of Motor Council meetings, keeping members informed. His dedication and behind-the-scenes efforts ensure the smooth operation of the club, making him a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.

Nominee: Robbie Miller Warringah Rugby Club

Robbie Miller has been a cornerstone of Warringah Rugby Club for over 20 years, serving as a dedicated team manager and volunteer. On match days, he takes on essential tasks such as running water, preparing equipment, and driving the gear van, ensuring smooth operations. His efforts extend beyond game days, volunteering throughout the week to maintain the club’s facilities and create a welcoming space for players and supporters. Robbie’s long-standing commitment and community spirit make him a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.

Nominee: Tilly Cooper Mona Vale Surf Life Saving Club

Tilly Cooper is a dedicated member of Mona Vale Surf Life Saving Club and a committed participant in the Nippers programme. She has an outstanding attendance record and competes in all Club Championship events, including the iron person, despite not training for it. Tilly is a key member of the club’s march past team and supports the Nippers programme by welcoming new members, volunteering at BBQs, and assisting with event setups. Her compassion extends to advocating for youth with disabilities and collecting swimming costumes for underprivileged families in Fiji. Tilly’s dedication makes her a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.

Nominee: Sam Wardlaw

Peninsula Junior Cricket Club

Sam Wardlaw has been a dedicated volunteer at Peninsula Junior Cricket Club for three seasons, currently serving as the Grassroots Cricket Blast Coordinator and U10s team coordinator. His efforts have significantly boosted junior cricket participation through Saturday morning matches and off-season promotions. Sam has streamlined communication, ensuring smooth club operations, and fostered community spirit by organising events like the end-of-season BBQ and sharing player achievements on social media. Sam’s passion, creativity, and leadership have strengthened the club’s growth and connection to its community, making him a deserving nominee for the Pittwater Community Excellence Award.
