Editor’s Note
Hi Everyone,
This week’s edition is full of positive news which is always so great to share with you!
The mill is crushing, the boardwalk’s open, cruise ships are celebrating their first year back in business and Airlie Beach has just won Best Small Tourism Town in Queensland.
Earlier this week we invited a few representatives from the local tourism industry to a front-page photo shoot to celebrate the announcement.
I expected about seven or eight people to turn up and was amazed when almost 20 came along to celebrate!
It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm and positivity return to our tourism industry and it is awards like this that boost morale for everyone.
Thanks to all of you who came along on Tuesday, the photo shoot was great fun!
As the winter months and its beautiful sunsets gain momentum, so too do our local festivals and events.
In this edition we include lineup announcements for the
Airlie Beach Festival of Music, details about tonight’s Welcome The Whales event and the many more.
One festival that is particularly close to my heart is The Whitsunday Writers Festival which is due to take place next September (read the full details on page 11).
I was part of the committee many years ago and enjoyed helping festival founder, Gloria Burley, put the event together for several years.
Gloria sadly passed away in 2018 and since then the festival has lied dormant.
That was until a group of passionate locals tenderly took the reins and reinvigorated the event.
I am honoured to be part of the new Whitsunday Writers Festival committee and I am sure Gloria would be thrilled to see her much-loved passion-project continue.

It takes a lot of courage to show our vulnerability and to reach out to strangers in the community and ask for help.
But this is something new mum, Amber Rosa-Salas has needed to do several times in the long journey to motherhood.
Amazingly, Amber discovered she was pregnant at eight months, and she was suddenly cast into a world of motherhood, one that she was not prepared for.
Having recently returned from travelling in Canada, she had nowhere to live and no idea about how to be a mother.
Since reaching out for support, she has felt the strong embrace of the community time and time again.
From the Whitsunday Housing Company finding her suitable accommodation, to the midwives providing her with essential items such as clothes and
toys – the support has meant the world to her.
Most recently, Amber saw another element of community support shine bright when her fridge suddenly broke, containing all her eight-month-old baby’s food. She reached out on social media and was deeply humbled when another mum offered to lend her one.
By emptying her own drink fridge to preserve another’s food, this mum’s donation shows a true example of self-sacrifice.
“The community have been really good to me,” said Amber. “It really restores my faith in others. It was such a shock finding out I was pregnant at eight months, but since that moment, I have been really looked after by everyone. “Thank you to everyone who has helped me through this journey.”

A Record-Breaking Year Back In Business For Cruise Ships
In a mammoth record-breaking year, 74 cruise ships, with well over 180,000 passengers have cruised through the Whitsundays and checked into the Port of Airlie terminal.
June 17, 2022, saw the return of cruise ships to the region, postCOVID, which passengers eager to explore the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach, participating in local tours and adventures.
Cruise Whitsundays Sales and Marketing Manager Renee Branton-Brown believes the return of cruise ships to the Whitsundays is one of the key factors in the region’s growth post-COVID.
“Cruise ships provide a significant source of revenue to the Whitsunday region, in 2019, it was estimated that Whitsundays received a crucial $21 million boost to the economy through cruise ship visitation,” she said.
“With the approximate spend per passenger being around $200, it’s easy to see why these ships are so important to our local tourism industry.
“And after a record number of
ships visiting the Whitsundays over the past 12 months, we expect to see the economic benefit to the region continue to soar.”
Until June 17, 2022, it had been 832 days since the last cruise ship had anchored in Whitsundays waters, with cruise ship travel being one of the last industries to return to operation following the easing of the pandemic.
Guests that arrive on cruise ships are welcomed by the volunteer Cruise Ship Ambassadors who provide information about the town, the services, experiences and activities available.
“A special mention of course needs to go to the incredible work done by the Cruise Ship Ambassadors.,” said Ms Branton-Brown.
“They show up to each cruise ship with a huge smile, ready to greet each passenger – they are indeed ambassadors for our entire region.
The team at Cruise Whitsundays is extremely thankful for their tireless work.”
State Budget Released
The State budget was released on Tuesday evening and Treasurer Cameron Dick said the $12.3 billion surplus is the largest surplus delivered by any state government this year.
One of the biggest influencing factors were coal mining royalties which brought in an impressive $15.9 billion, far exceeding the predicted $5.9 billion.
A big focus of this years’ budget was the immediate relief for costof-living pressures with over 2.2 million Queensland households receiving at least $550 off their power in the coming financial year.
The government has also announced a record breaking spend on infrastructure, with $89 billion spread over a range of projects which include the Big Build Program which will see the construction of significant energy infrastructure over the next four years.
In addition, there is $751 million for a new housing program.

Airlie Beach Wins Top Small Tourism Town 2023
Bowen Welcomes Defence Force Training Exercise
Airlie Beach has been awarded the Top Small Tourism Town for 2023, by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC).
The annual awards recognise stand-out Queensland holiday destinations with great commitment to visitor excellence.
Bowen was also a finalist for the highly competitive category of Top Tourism Town, going up against Bundaberg, Rockhampton, and Redcliffe.
Unfortunately, it did not win on this occasion.
Airlie Beach was up against the likes of Ingham in far north Queensland and took home the top gong for the second year in a row.
Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer, Rick Hamilton said taking out the award again proves that Airlie Beach has remained a favourite for Aussies travelling to the State.
“The Whitsundays is the most tourism-reliant region in Queensland with one in
three jobs directly related to tourism,” he said.
“Winning this award again is a feather in The Whitsundays’ cap and hugely encouraging to the tourism industry.”
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor, Julie Hall, said the award was excellent news for Airlie Beach and the broader Whitsundays region.
“Tourism is one of the three key pillars for our regional economy and the win is just reward for the resilience and passion of our tourist operators and the leadership shown by Tourism Whitsundays (TW).
“Council are proud to be the major funding supporter for TW and look forward to partnering with them to continue promoting our Whitsunday region as Australia’s top tourism destination.”
“This is not only a win for Airlie Beach as best Small Tourism Town 2023 but a win for Proserpine, Bowen, Collinsville, our islands and everywhere in between who all offer such a diverse range of visitor experiences,” she said.
From June 14 to August 16, parts of Kings Beach and access roads will be temporarily closed as the Department of Defence undertake their Exercise Talisman Sabre 2023 training exercise.
This will be the largest iteration of the exercise to date, and will include field training exercise, preparation activities, amphibious landing, ground manoeuvres and air combat.
This is an international exercise, with participants travelling from 13 different nations, including France, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and Germany. Representatives from Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines will attend as observ-
ers.
The exercises will utilise Bowen’s Kings Beach for the duration of the period, with access closed, and other adjoining roads temporarily closed at points to allow vehicle movement.
Kings Beach from Sandhill Creek was closed from Wednesday June 14, 5pm and will open Wednesday August 16, 5am. Denison Park Botanical Gardens was closed, from Wednesday June 14, 5pm and due to reopen Wednesday August 16, 5am. Alongside Talisman Sabre 2023, the Defence Force will also conduct Exercise Sea Explorer 23 and Exercise Sea Raider 23.

Boardwalk Re-Opens After Six-Week Reno
One day ahead of schedule, the refurbishment and one metre widening of the boardwalk between the Coral Sea Marina Resort and Sorrento Restaurant and bar is complete.
The previous boardwalk was constructed with timber and has been replaced with composite fibre materials that are “environmentally friendly and rust, rot, and corrode resistant”.
This segment of the boardwalk was reopened to the public after six weeks of construction and completed by local contractor Plants Whitsunday.
Mayor Julie Hall said the boardwalk urgently needed an upgrade to ensure its longevity and to continue its role as a vibrant connectivity hub along the Coral Sea for residents and visitors.
“It really does provide a beautiful pathway that connects Airlie Beach to Cannonvale along the beautiful Coral Sea,” she said. “This material has a 100-year design life which will significantly reduce future maintenance costs on our ratepayers.”
The entire boardwalk, which runs the length of Airlie Beach to Cannonvale Beach, is set to be refurbished, with this segment completed first, due to its higher complexity of location and necessary changes required to accommodate the widening.
Plants Whitsundays was awarded the tender and completed the work in record time.
“We were very excited for this opportunity,” said Matt Stokes, Director of Plants Whitsundays.
“We were up against other large companies from out of town, so it was great to be awarded the tender.”
“The boardwalk leaves an imprint on both locals and visitors and is a great asset to have running along our coast.”
Mayor Hall said, “It’s important that we also support local business, so we are proud to have worked with Plants Whitsunday on the boardwalk upgrade.”
“A big thanks to our community for your patience and understanding while we completed stage 1 and I encourage everyone to head down and leisurely stroll on
the waterfront to check out the new section.”
Iyas Shaheen, owner of Sorrento Restaurant and Bar, is happy with the work.
“We’re glad it was done on time, and we thank the community for their support. Customers made the effort to come to us
even with the work, and we appreciate it.” Plants Whitsunday also hold the tender for stage 2 and 3 however funding has yet to be secured for the refurbishment. It is expected that by July 1 funding and a timeframe for the next stages will be confirmed.

Drink Drivers Caught Over Weekend
Seventeen drink drivers were caught on roads across the Whitsundays last weekend (June 10 - June 11).
Drivers were caught over the legal limit in Cannonvale, Proserpine, Collinsville, and also Jubilee Pocket.
A 36-year-old male resident of Jubilee Pocket is alleged to have returned the highest reading from the weekend with a reading of .164% following a roadside breath test at 12:14 am on June 10 on Jubilee Pocket Road.
He was arrested and has been charged with driving while under the influence of liquor and also driving with a disqualified driver’s licence.
He will appear in the Proserpine Magistrates Court on July 10 to have the matters heard.
Operation Mackay Irving, Whitsundays
Shortly after 12am on June 10, and as part of Operation Mackay Irving, Whitsunday police officers were patrolling the Cannonvale area when it is alleged that they located a 29-year-old Cannonvale woman involved in suspicious activity.
Detectives from the Whitsunday Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at a Preston address where they located allegedly stolen items.
The 29-year-old Cannonvale woman was charged with 32 offences relating to break in and attempted break in offences at businesses and other properties. She appeared in the Proserpine Magistrates Court earlier this week.

Airspace Broadcasting Review For Proserpine Airport
In 2022, the airspace broadcasting area around Proserpine Airport was reviewed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
This review is used to improve pilot safety when communicating with each other in the air.
This airspace broadcast area around Proserpine Airport is called the Proserpine Group Broadcast Area and the consultation period determined that the area needed to be expanded to the south, and that the radio frequency needed to be changed and ‘sky lanes’ created, so that pilots can fly along and bypass the Proserpine Airport and arriving and departing aircrafts.
Following this consultation period, CASA will now conduct a formal review of the airspace.
Jeremy Westell of the Office of Airspace Regulation will be on site in Proserpine and Airlie Beach all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday June 16 to 18 for members of the community to provide feedback.
To arrange a time with Mr Westell, contact him Jeremy.westell@casa.gov.au or 07 3144 7410.
State Member Slams Disproportionate Funding
While the budget looks positive from a state level, the breakdown of investment within the Whitsunday and Mackay region is mainly centred around schools, hospitals, and preannounced projects.
This is the view of Member for Whitsunday Amanda Camm MP who says she is disappointed to see a disproportionate amount of funding given to the region.
Mackay and Whitsundays only received $623.4 million in $20.321 billion Capital Program compared to Townsville that received $1.180 billion and Central Queensland that received $2.003 billion.
The sparsely populated Outback Queensland was the only other region to receive similar, at
$675.8 million.
“Given the state government mining royalties that have increased by $8 billion, I am disappointed to see no funding returned to the region that creates that wealth,” she said.
“We have the smallest budget contribution, by region and this is the last budget before next year’s election budget, and I would have liked to have seen better.”
“It’s great to see they have announced free kindy but how are they going to deliver on that when we are struggling to find a skilled workforce and enough placements for kids?”
Ms Camm is also frustrated that infrastructure projects such as Hamilton Plains flood protec-
tion strategies have been completely missed in the budget.
“There is nothing for Hamilton Plains and no major road projects in our region at all,” she said.
“We are just not seen as a region that this government is willing to invest in.”
“There is a blatant disregard for the population growth we are seeing in regional Queensland, but I will continue to advocate for our fair share.”

Will You b kinder Next Week?
The sixth annual b kinder Day is coming to schools, businesses, and community groups next week and everyone is invited to mark this important day by participating in initiatives that promote kindness. Every school in the Whitsundays will be involved this year, with many students writing kindness cards and sending them to others.
In total there will be over 200 schools participating in the day, including a school in Cambodia and one in the UK.
The initiative is inspired by a local 12-year-old girl, Billie Kinder, who tragically lost her life in a horse-riding accident in 2016.
She left behind a book of poems and artworks that were fuelled by kindness, these messages have now been used by Billie’s mum, Danny, to create the b kinder foundation and continue her
daughter’s legacy.
“I don’t think there’s a greater thing you can do than be kind,” said Danny Kinder.
“It’s the basis of life – in fact, even if you can’t do anything else you can still be kind.”
Three weeks ago, the b kinder Foundation launched a new b kinder school initiative, asking all schools to promote a culture of kindness.
It is a student-led, peer to peer project founded upon five kindness criteria which include aspects such as creating a safe space to talk, kindness awards within the school and reaching out to other schools and the broader community.
“It’s all about physical connection,” said Danny.
“We want people to get off their devises, be present and feel connected with
Meet Bowen Midwife Aleisha Johnson
The magic of childbirth is not lost on Bowen hospital registered midwife Aleisha Johnson.
Her hard work and dedication is clear in everything she does, and she was nominated for the International Nurses Day Clinical Excellence Award in May.
Aleisha has been a registered nurse, midwife and diabetes educator for 26 years, living in four states, but has called Bowen home for 14 years.
“I like to share in that joyous bit of life,” Aleisha said.
“Especially being able to do antenatal care with someone the whole way through.
“It’s important and special to be able to have that rapport with people.
“I guess also being in a small town, we get to know our mothers quite well.”
Writers Festival Reinvigorated!
Dates for the newly revitalised Whitsundays Writers Festival have been announced for Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 September 2024.
A new committee has been formed and its Chair, Karen Jacobsen, said she is thrilled to be part of a previously loved event.
“I look forward to celebrating uniquely Queensland and Australian stories with the authors we are excited to invite,” she said.
others.”
If you, your business, or your community group would like to participate in the upcoming b kinder Day, simply reach out directly through bkinderfoundation.org.
WHAT: b kinder Day
WHEN: June 22
WHERE: Everywhere!
“The transformation of books and the love of reading is so important for the young and old, and we look forward to bringing readers and writers together at this fantastic event.”
Still in the planning stages, the keynote speakers are yet to be confirmed but discussions are already taking place to create a lively and entertaining festival itinerary.
It is expected this will include a mixture of interactive workshops, panel discussions and author talks. There will also be a Cocktails and Poetry Salon on the Friday evening, a long table lunch on the Sunday afternoon, a special children’s morning and a lively Literary Dinner on the Saturday Night.
During the Literary Dinner a selection of competition winners will be announced, and awards given. Most notable is the Gloria Burley Award for the best unpublished manuscript.
Aleisha leads a team of three midwives in the women’s health clinic, providing antenatal and postnatal care.
“We do clinic every day and also have a doctor’s obstetrics and gynaecology clinic one day a week.”
Her team also performs at home postnatal check-ups as Bowen Hospital is not a birthing hospital.
‘We do everything here except births, though we do have a few unplanned births each year here.”
Aleisha decided to pursue education into gestational diabetes when she noticed a need for healthcare in the Bowen area.
“All the women that we had come to the clinic who had gestational diabetes were having to go to Proserpine to see a diabetes educator,” she said.
She enrolled in post graduate study
through James Cook University in Cairns and became qualified to educate women.
“It’s one of the areas where we’ve been able to build up the care we can offer in Bowen,” she explains.
“For the women who have gestational diabetes, it’s really cut down their travel, the stress for them, and inconvenience because it meant taking days off work just to go to Proserpine, Mackay, or Townsville for a 15-mintue appointment.”
Get to know the Hillery Group
Gloria Burley was the original Whitsunday Writers Festival Founder who sadly passed away in 2018. She had a passion for story-telling and penned three books herself.
It is part of her vision that now continues with new vigour in 2024.
Attendees of next year’s festival can expect an engaging mixture of genres, from crime to memoir, romance to screenwriting, and much more.
There is also expected to be a variety of informative talks covering hot topics such as Preserving the Written Word: Human vs AI/Chat GPT.
For lovers of reading, writing, books and words – the Whitsundays Writers Festival 2024 is a banquet of cultural entertainment – so save the date and invite your friends to a four-day event where everyone is welcome.

Bowen’s popular Cape Edgecumbe walking trails will be upgraded to enhance the safety and visual amenity of all users.
Various segments of the trails have deteriorated over the years due to weathering and Council has appointed a local contractor to upgrade the tracks.
The trail upgrades will be carried out within the existing footprint, with selective partial re-alignments in specific areas to improve safety, track width, and erosion control.
The project will be carried out in stages with stage 1 commencing in August on the section between Murray Bay Road to Rose Bay Lions Lookout, including Mother Beddick Lookout.
Last weekend saw the 135th Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft event and I am proud to say that Council was once again a platinum sponsor.
This hallmark event is more than just a display of outback skill and horsemanship; it represents the very heart and soul of our rural community.
It attracts visitors and brings together residents, fostering a sense of unity, camaraderie, and pride in our shared heritage and traditions.

Starting his position in January following the retirement of much-loved previous manager, Mike Porter, the new Manager of Canegrowers Proserpine, Brendon Nothard, certainly hit the ground running.
and thanks to the organisers, volunteers, and sponsors who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this event to life.
Their commitment, dedication, and countless hours of hard work are the driving force behind the success of the Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft.
Their passion for preserving our traditions and creating an unforgettable experience for all who attend is amazing.
The Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft event also plays a significant role in boosting our local economy.
Visitors from near and far flock to our region, injecting vitality into our businesses and providing an opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and hospitality that the Whitsunday region is renowned for.
Just a reminder that the Collinsville Community Catch-up will be held at the Collinsville Community Centre on Wednesday, June 21 from 9am to 11am.
This is the fourth community catch-up and is an initiative of Council to better connect with our local communities, facilitate a two-way flow of information, provide an update on Council projects relevant to you, and hearing residents’ thoughts about these projects and other issues affecting the local community.
Originally from South Africa, Brendon has lived in Australia since 2017 and spent the last five years working for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Mackay where 80 per cent of his time was spent in sugar.
Previously, while in South Africa he worked in a similar position for the South African Canegrowers Association.
Brendon is on-hand every day to assist his membership base of more than 130 growers located between Bloomsbury and south of Bowen.
He helps with a range of queries that includes business support and collective milling agreements, regular mill audits to ensure transparency and fair pay for growers, workplace health and safety, and trans-
port. The group also offers member fire insurance cover.
Brendon says he is looking forward to a strong sugar season ahead and will continue to work alongside growers to maximise profitability.
“The crop is a bit smaller than last year in terms of quantity, but we are hoping for higher sugar levels with the prediction of a dryer harvesting season,” he said.
“We also have a very good global price – in fact it is the highest it’s been in 40 years!”
The main reason for the increased global sugar prices is that surplus stock has now been exhausted creating concerns of a supply shortage alongside regular increases in demand.
Overall, despite a late finish to the previous season that has left some lower yielding paddocks this year, the season is looking promising for local farmers.
Disaster Coordination Centre Opens Doors
The Whitsunday community received a behind the scenes glimpse into the inner workings of our local Disaster Coordination Centre at the inaugural open day held in Proserpine on Sunday.
Dedicated to raising awareness for how Council and Disaster Management Coordination Staff handle a natural disaster, the open day included tours of the centre in activation mode, provided informational talks and answered questions from attendees.
The Airlie Beach Bicentennial Boardwalk has been upgraded by Whitsunday Regional Council in stage 1 of a revamp for the popular trail.
The section between Coral Sea Resort and Coral Sea Marina has now been completely replaced and widened in order to improve user safety and enjoyment for all.
The old timber boardwalk material has been replaced with a composite fibre material with a 100-year design life which is not only environmentally friendly but is also rust, rot, and corrode resistant.
Further upgrades to the remainder of the Boardwalk will be delivered in sections subject to grant funding.
This initial stage was supported by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant.

“The kids thoroughly enjoyed the dressup,” said Disaster Management Coordinator, Sandra Black.
“And they even tried their hand at being phone loggers! It was great fun for all.”
Alongside the open day, the public are encouraged to complete the Community Resilience Survey which is located on Council’s Your Say website.
One lucky participant will receive a generator and entries close on June 26 at 4pm.
The Disaster Coordination team are a passionate group of individuals who love engaging with the community.
They were recently finalists in the Local Government Managers Association Awards for Excellence under the category
of teamwork.
They show this quality time and time again in everything they do and most recently in their new jingle, with lyrics that aim to show the community what they do at the centre.
Sandra Black wrote the jingle, and the team created a music video which features Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Mayor Julie Hall and Director Adam Hagy. They will use it for promotional purposes, and it will be available on the Disaster Information Facebook page for all to enjoy soon.

Global Sugar Traders Visit Region
Two of Wilmar’s global sugar traders shared the latest market intel with Proserpine canegrowers earlier this month, during a series of grower meetings in north and central Queensland.
Senior sugar traders, Peter Bingham from London and Neil Foo Zhizhou from Singapore, spent a week visiting Wilmar’s milling regions and addressing large grower turnouts.
Peter dived into the supply and demand fundamentals pulled together by the Wilmar global team.
Behind Peter and Neil sit a team of re-
search analysts and a global network of information sources. The granular detail they can talk to regarding the demand and supply issues in each of the origin and consumption destinations is impressive. In short, the near-term outlook remains supportive of prices.
Even with the elevated price there is only minor demand destruction, which is growing globally at roughly 2 million tonnes of sugar a year.
The past few years have seen a substantial drawdown of global stocks as demand continues to outstrip supply, so there is
little room for a slip-up in the current Brazilian crop.
Moreover, the potential for development of the El Nino weather pattern has traders alert to possible delays in the ongoing Brazilian harvest and the risk to the Indian monsoon which is critical to the next major crop supply.
Neil Foo Zhizhou focused on the macro factors affecting the sugar market and presented some possible longer-term scenarios.
A major element of his thesis is the massive amount of US dollar debt that is pro-
of your pricing Take control
jected to increase exponentially. This will lead to persistent inflation with the outcome of continually rising commodity prices.
Not surprisingly growers liked what they heard. However, Neil was quick to point out that these are projections based on hypothesis and assumptions and there is no certainty to outcomes.
Nevertheless, growers were happy to chat to Neil following the presentation to dig deeper into his thinking.

Home, Property & Garden
KITCHEN GARDENS
It’s an exciting time in the vegie patch this month, with everything thriving!
Herbs, flowers for attracting beneficial insects and just about any vegetable that grows in the Whitsundays, is growing now with vigour.
I’ve just invested in steel rings to give myself some additional growing spaces, with all my beds full to the brim with produce and not wanting to miss out on the perfect growing conditions we are presently experiencing.
If your garden beds are full or you don’t have any! Large pots could be an option for you too. Just make sure they are 300mm deep and that you use the best soil you can get your hands on.
Remember veggies are hungry plants, so make sure you add plenty of organic matter to your soil before planting.
If you do not produce your own compost, there are plenty of bagged options that you can work into your soil.
I’ve been playing with palletised worm castings this season and I’m impressed! It comes in 20kg bags and although more expensive than the likes of mushroom compost or poultry manure, it goes a long way, and it will definitely be a part of my growing ritual from here on.
I received a message a week or so ago asking, “How do I grow beetroot”?
So, let’s talk beetroot!
From seeding, to growing, to harvesting, storage and cooking.
Now beetroot is a root crop and is pretty easy to grow and just as long as you follow a few simple requirements, you’ll have beetroots within eight - 12 weeks, depending on the size you are after. I prefer younger beetroot, no larger than seven-cm in diameter. You’ll find these ones sweeter and less likely to become tough or stringy. Soil preparation is important. Beetroot are hungry feeders so ensure you dig through plenty of organic matter for this crop and then follow up with a regular liquid feed.
I use Seasol every three to four weeks. Plant from seed about 10cm apart, in a sunny position in your garden.
Having said that it is very, very important that you do not let the soil dry out or your seeds will fail. I use a 30% shade net over my garden beds, and it works a treat.
You can over seed beetroot and thin later as the young shoots are a great addition to a salad.
Keep the water up to beetroot, be consistent and be sure to water every morning, and watch for weeds because they don’t like competition. Other than that, they are a no problem vegetable to grow.
Make sure you harvest before they go to seed. They are sweeter with a better texture when harvested young, so when you see the top of the beetroot bulging out of the soil, and they are over 40mm in diameter, you can start to harvest them.
Beetroot will store well in the crisper for up to 3 weeks. Leave a couple of cm of the stalk attached for best longevity. The cut leaves will store for a few days and can be sued just as you would spinach.
Beetroot will store well in the crisper for up to 3 weeks. Leave a couple of centimetres of the stalk attached for best longevity. The cut leaves will store for a few days and can be used just as you would spinach. To freeze, do not peel or cut them, cook them first until tender. This can take a couple of hours. The store them in a container in the freezer. They will last for up to 6 months this way.
Beetroot is very versatile. You can grate them and add them to salad.
You can puree them with oil and add spices to make a beetroot dip.
You can even mash beetroot. After cooking, rub off their skin, add an equal quantity of cooked potatoes and mash with butter, chives and salt and pepper.
HINT:
Wear gloves when cooking your beetroot, you will not get the colour out of your skin for some time.
DID YOU KNOW:
That beetroot is part of the sliver beet family, they are high in fibre and antioxidants and are an excellent source of Vit A & K, manganese, and potassium.

Did you know that the first Proserpine Show was held in 1899?
And that it was held on Mr John Compton’s farm in the area where Drakes is now located?
The “Port Denison Times” reported, “exhibits were housed in a building near the stables. Mr Jim Reid won the prize for the best cabbages.”
It is believed that the original show came about after the townswomen visited each other for company and would often compare their home remedies, needlecraft and gardening leading to a competition between the ladies.
After seeing the women’s display, the men decided to have a ploughing match and brought along some horses. And so, the Proserpine Agricultural, Pastoral and Industrial Show was born.
By 1902, the idea of a show was rooted in the community with the first meeting of a show committee held in April.
By 1910, the show had grown to such an extent that it was necessary to secure larger premises and the committee leased the current grounds from landowner, G Waite.
A year later, more than 1000 patrons attended the event including visitors from
Bowen who were brought down on a special train organised for the occasion.
While we now have a twoday show including the very popular night show on Friday evening, this was not always the case.
In 1932, the committee was forced to revert to a one-day show due to financial constraints in the district and the night show is a much more modern addition having been introduced in the late 1980s.
Since its inception, the show has seen many improvements – in 1947, a more spacious pavilion was erected, electricity was connected in 1949, a telephone was installed in 1956 and town water supply was available soon after.
Over the years, buildings have been regularly modernised or replaced such as new bar facilities in 1980 and upgraded cattle yards in 2022.
Additional buildings have also been erected such as the Daly and Emily Thomas Memorial Pavilion in 1993 and a new Main Pavilion in 2021, to replace the one destroyed by Cyclone Debbie.
This pavilion features a well-equipped bar constructed using timber from the previ-
ous pavilion.
In 2023, patrons will be treated to a brandnew poultry shed as well as a new grandstand from which to enjoy the ring events.
While many changes have occurred, a familiar thread remains – for example, the effect horses still have on the show.
While “Best Turnout”, the once keenly contested event of brightly coloured and polished sulkies, with a proudly groomed horse stepping out sharply around the ring is long gone, competitions of a different nature are still keenly contested between riders and their mounts.
Side Show alley remains a firm favourite with the young patrons although shows such as Jimmy Sharman’s Boxing Troupe are seen no more.
The exhibit halls continue to attract locals who wish to display their crafts, fruit, vegetables, and cooking and hopefully be judged as the finest in that section.
And for years and years, patrons have savoured the waffles, potato chips, dagwood dogs and fairy floss.
Proserpine’s very first show brought together an isolated community for social activity and friendly competition. While these days our community is no longer isolated, today’s show (now known as Show Whitsunday) continues to be an important and greatly anticipated social event.
The people of the Whitsundays owe a debt to the many dedicated men and women who, for well over a century, have given their time and talents to make the annual show the success that it is today.
This year, the 110th show, promises to deliver yet another fun-filled and action-packed two days of entertainment for all the family.

650 Weddings In Seven Years
For 25 years, Kylie McIntosh has played roles in countless happy unions, from wedding planning, stylist and now as a marriage celebrant for the past seven years.
With over 600 weddings, from Cairns to Airlie Beach, in her resume, Kylie does anything and everything for her couples.
“It’s like the biggest natural high you can get, and it’s not just the couple, it’s the moments between the parent and child, or brothers and sisters. I feel all of that,” Kylie said.
Kylie shows the couples through the entire paperwork process, making sure everything is submitted. before focusing on the fun side, such as music, the overall feeling for the ceremony, and the script.
“The ceremony, the script, everything is all personalised to the couple,” she explains.
Kylie tends to specialise in interstate and destination weddings.
“I attract a lot of couples wishing to have intimate weddings, from interstate and regional areas. However also couples with large groups who really want to their wedding guests to have the best experience possible.
HIGHLY COMMENDED FOR COASTAL FOOD DESIGN
“I bring an awesome vibe to my weddings that couples and their guests really appreciate.”
Kylie was recently awarded winner of the Marriage Celebrant category in the Mackay and Whitsundays Wedding Industry Awards.
This is Kylie’s third time achieving first place and she is grateful for the award.
“When I won the first time, it was more like ‘how?’ - I am just so lucky and grateful that the couples even wanted to vote,” Kylie said.
“And now three awards in three years, it’s incredible, especially because there are so many deserving celebrants.”
“I am just so happy, and the word I’m looking for is grateful, I am so grateful.”
Originating from a passion to work for herself, chef by trade Tara Sobott, established Coastal Food Design, a specialist catering company primarily operated through her food van.
Since setting up shop in 2020, the business has evolved to encompass the food van and event catering, including corporate dinners, parties, weddings, and even the superyachts.
And now in 2023, Tara and the business has been recognised in the Australian Wedding Industry Awards, receiving Highly Commended in the Wedding Caterer category.
“It feels great to be recognised,” said Tara.
“We are a hardworking team who always strives for our best, and it’s great to receive this award.”
Tara believes that what sets Coastal Food Design apart from other caterers is their dedication to their client.
“We love having a great end result, with happy clients and happy guests,” she said.
“They say food brings people together, and we love being a part of that, especially for a fantastic and exciting event such as a wedding.”
Approximately 60 per cent of Coastal Food Designs event catering consists of weddings and the business has flourished, being flexible and open to follow their client’s dream and direction for their special day.
They have found that trends have fluctuated, and wedding parties are favouring simpler menus, featuring canapes, and grazing boards, however a more formal sit-down menu is always a great move in Coastal Food Design’s books.

Set The Stage Dragon Returns To Airlie Beach Festival Of Music
BY BRONTE HODGE
Ever a fan of touring and getting back to their roots, Australian-New Zealand rock legends Dragon will be gracing the Airlie Beach Festival of Music stage this November.
In fact, Dragon was a headliner for the first Airlie Beach Festival of Music, back in 2013, and now 10 years on, they are honoured to be invited once again.
The boys, Todd on vocals and bass, Mark with vocals and guitar, Bruce on guitar, and Pete who is awesome on drums, have an antipodean rhythm that thrums through them, creating hit Aussie classics that everybody has to get up and dance to.
The band embodies rock and roll and rocks out in a ‘gentlemanly-like fashion’, according to Mark, who was propositioned by Todd 17 years ago to join the band.
“Of course, I said yes,” said Mark. “I was just wondering, who calls at 10 o’clock in the morning with something so unexpected?
“And it was quite amazing.”
Dragon has transformed into a household family name, particularly in 1987 when the band toured across Europe
with powerhouse Tina Turner, under the name ‘Hunter’.
“I think that is by far a high point for the band,” said Mark.
Since then, Dragon has returned to Australia and made a local name for themselves across Australia and New Zealand.
“We went to one of those big festivals in New Zealand, Rhythm and Vines.
“And, you know, there was nobody there, nobody in the audience.
“We had only just arrived and there was somebody on stage just announcing.
“And we’re going ‘oh my god, this is going to be awful. We’re going to walk out on stage and play to nobody’ and literally within the 10 minutes before we walked on stage, thousands of people came over the hills and everywhere, and everyone came down to the stage.
“It was a phenomenal sight!”
Making their way to Airlie Beach Festival of Music is high on the band’s agenda.
“We have been wondering when we’d have the chance to come to the festival again. Every year it goes by, and every year we go ‘there it is, and there we ar-
A Coral Sea Long Lunch
en’t’, but not this year!
“We are thrilled, absolutely thrilled to be coming!”
The variety of artists on the 2023 lineup continue to get bigger and better, with more headliners announced seemingly every day.
“The variety of acts is outstanding. It seems to be a lot of classics. With us, we’ll be playing the anthems that everyone knows, so we can play a chord and the audience can sing along.”
The classic timeless tunes of Dragon will not be lost on anyone at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music 2023, with every generation, young and old, rocking out to the set list.
What a way to spend a chill spring afternoon, rocking to the best of ‘April Sun in Cuba,’ ‘Are You Old Enough?’ and ‘Still in Love with You’.

Calling All Songwriters!
Back by popular demand, the second annual Whitsundays Songwriter Festival and Residency has just been announced for August 31 to September 4 this year.
Organisers are excited to provide a threeday Songwriter Residential Retreat which includes a diverse and educational program where attendees have the opportunity to learn from some of the best musical minds in the industry.
The event will culminate in a special evening performance by the professional faculty at Paradiso in Airlie Beach on the Saturday evening.
The festival is a brainchild of inspiring local musician, Karen Jacobsen, who performed her pop-orchestral piece, Misogyny Opus, at the MECC last month, and Francesca de Valance, who is the founder of I Heart Songwriting Club.
Professional Australian songwriters of diverse music genres have been invited to attend the 2023 mentorship program, with names expected to be announced soon.
Over the three days the faculty will participate in a retreat, co-writing songs, networking, and sharing their personal experiences in the music industry.
Last year 13-year-old Noah Robertson penned an entire song during the residency and went on to win the Australian National Busking Championship Awards, demonstrating the transformative power of the festival’s mentorship and guidance.
Emerging songwriters are encouraged to sign-up to the Whitsundays Songwriter Festival and Residency now and discover how this revolutionary musical community can help you reach your dreams.
Welcome The Whales: Special Event Tonight
The whole community is invited to formally welcome the whales to our region in a special event hosted by the Traditional Owners of The Whitsundays.
Each year between June and October, thousands of whales – especially Humpbacks – migrate north from the cold waters of Antarctica to breed and give birth within our warm and calm tropical waters. This year, the community is invited to mark the official start of the 2023 season with a family event on the Airlie Beach Foreshore from 5pm this evening.
Children are encouraged to wear blue to the ceremony and Traditional Owners will
invite children to be painted in traditional markings.
They will then be guided to put their handprints on a traditional painting of a mother and calf Humpback to signify the community’s bond and connection with the whales.
In keeping with long-established First Nations ritual, a smoking ceremony will then take place, before an ancient whale chant sung by the Traditional Owners.
Representatives of the Ngaro people will then speak about their cultural connection with the whales and the deep-seated cultural significance of the season’s first whales.

Industry Legends And New Talent Announced for Airlie Beach Festival Of Music 2023
With less than six months to go, the biggest music festival in the Whitsundays is ready to deliver something to everyone again this year and organisers are excited by the latest line-up announcement.
With 15 venues across Airlie Beach and 50 bands of all genres, Airlie Beach Festival of Music is already shaping up to be an exciting event for all to enjoy.
This year, organisers are welcoming back some classic artists who performed in the festival’s first year.
Ian Moss, iconic Aussie music icon, is “extremely excited to be playing in in 2023, along with my incredible band.”
“The Whitsundays region and the North Queensland tropics is such a beautiful part of our country, so if you can, grab a friend, get your tickets, and get along to see some great acts and music. We can’t wait!” he said. He will be joined by classic legends Dragon, who also performed at the first festival in
2013.
Frenzal Rhomb guitarist, Lindsay McDougall, said his band dreamed of the Whitsundays when they were young.
“From Hamilton to Hayman, from Daydream to some other ones that I can’t think of right now, and now we get to play there!” he said.
“More importantly, we’re gonna be near Ian Moss! And The Superjesus, Pierce Brothers and more. And Ian Moss! Can we borrow someone’s trimaran?”
Joining this all-star lineup is Lucy Gallant, Chocolate Starfish, Billy Field, and Skunkhour.
King Stingray’s strong vocals are set to cruise through the festival, bringing imagery of connections to home and family, only stepping into the scene in 2020.
Ross Wilson is an essential addition, performing his 50 years of Eagle Rock production with band The Peaceniks.
2022 Passport to Airlie winner Perry Street Park have been making waves and are coming back
to wow Airlie Beach once again. Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer, Rick Hamilton is looking forward to another big year of the Airlie Beach Festival of Music.
“Gavin, the festival founder, and his team have put together the perfect festival that incorporates the whole town seamlessly,” he said.
“From free buses running to and from accommodation houses to having bands in 15 venues and fully-equipped seating so there’s no need for attendees to even take camping chairs, it’s a music festival unique to Airlie Beach,” he said.
“As a tourism-driver, the Airlie Beach Festival of Music has transformed the first weekend of November into the most sought-after weekend outside of school holidays.
“If you want to experience The Whitsundays and some great music acts, I encourage you to book your tickets and accommodation soon.”

Elemental
Elemental sees the reprise of classic Pixar and Disney animation and inspired storyboards, with a touching tale of unlikely love in a world of living elements.
The main storyline follows Ember, a Fire Person, who works in her father’s corner store, and is struggling with being socially ridiculed for wanting to explore outside her home, Fire Town.
However, one day, she breaks a pipe in her father’s store, flooding the basement.
In with the water cames City Inspector Wade, who is a water person and has been investigating Fire Town’s rundown water system which threatens all of Fire Town. In a rush decision, Ember joins forces with Wade, to save her father’s shop from going under.
Together, her and Wade work as a team to solve the mystery of what’s going wrong in Fire Town and this partnership marks the beginning of an unlikely yet endearing love story between two characters who could not be more different.

With a touching and intimate soundtrack and stunning visuals, audiences can’t help but root for Ember and Wade’s happy ending, and the resolution and recognition of Fire People, who are often forcibly reserved to only remain in Fire Town and are looked down upon when outside their city.
Employing nuisance ideas of immigration and racial stigmatism, the sustained metaphor of Elementals is subtle and discrete,
allowing audiences to think further on modern-day racial tensions.
With no true antagonist to the film, it is solely Wade and Ember’s bittersweet romance that propels audiences through to the end.

Airlie Beach Welcomes International Comedian For One Night Only
Internationally renowned superstar comedian Jimeoin is coming to the Airlie Beach Hotel for a massive one night only this July and it will be an evening of unforgettable fun, and non-stop laughter.
This Irish comedian has performed here, there, and everywhere, and next up on his national tour is the one and only, and completely unforgettable, Airlie Beach Hotel.
He is infamous for declaring a tour then adding little spots along the way to share the laughter with and Jimeoin only recently added Airlie Beach to the mix, making this show sure to be a hoot and a half of a production.
Now, Airlie Beach is always set with an eager, engaged, and excited audience, and Jimeoin has already been receiving high praise and accolades for visiting our little neck of the Australian woods, with just over one long month to go before his arrival. Being a regular face on Aussie television since the early 90s, often performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, featuring at
the Edinburgh Festival Fringe each and every year, and having insanely popular live tours, Jimeoin will be taking on Airlie Beach and people are excited.
He is known, famous, and beloved for his absolutely cracking one liners, his intimate and personal standup comedy, and his charming and witty observations of everyday people and life.
Charming a crowd comes easy to Jimeoin and what a better place to be charmed than at the Airlie Beach Hotel.
Oh, and what will he say about our local Airlie Beach and Whitsundays area, where shoes are sometimes –more like often - optional, a tan is mandatory, and a cool and refreshing beverage on a summer’s day is a must?
Get your ticket now and find out in person what he observed and what he shares!
Jimeoin’s newest tour showcases the very best of his talents, drawing upon two of his beloved classic productions, The Craic and Who’s Your
Man?!, both unbelievably funny performances each in their own right.
Combining fantastic elements of these hit shows, Jimeoin has created a show that is the best of the very best, and something not to miss.
Long time fans of Jimeoin will not be disappointed, and newcomers to the comedian’s work will be left stunned and impressed, and all will be coming back for more, you can guarantee that.
Catch this comedic superstar live, up close and in person, at the Airlie Beach Hotel for one night only!
And don’t worry, the Airlie Beach Hotel will look after you, with both seated and standing tickets available, ready for anyone and everyone to catch a peek of this absolutely knee slapping, wickedly exhilarating show.

Bright Lights Shine Tonight
Head on down to the Proserpine RSL this evening for a performance by some incredible female vocalists at the Bright Lights Dinner and Show fundraiser.
Starring Lisa Stanley and three of her talented students, the evening will be a mixture of solo performances, harmonies, and group songs.
Lisa has been performing for over 20 years and she uses this experience to mentor young people in the community with her music club, Music Evolution Project.
Tonight, she will sing alongside three of her star students.
Amber Hinschen is a 15-year-old vocalist and lead singer of Category 5. Lisa describes her as a “belting powerhouse” who has been part of the club for a year and a half.
Also singing on the night is 13-yearold Meg McKeon who has a unique voice that Lisa describes as “laid back Sunday afternoon music that you could listen to all day”.
Completing the trio of young vocalists is Dominik James who is the lead singer of MyENVY.
She came third in Young Whitsundays Got Talent last year and her band came second.
Tonight’s event will be a lively and dynamic affair with dancing, karaoke
and of course the show. Dinner will also be served to guests. All proceeds are going directly back towards the RSL and will help fund their new kitchen.

Cannons’ Take to the Ocean
Local Rugby Stars Make NQ
For both Year 6 St Catherine’s Catholic College boys, rugby union is in their blood, and making the North Queensland team for rugby union is a dream come true.
Jamar Tabua has been playing rugby, both league and union, since he was 10-yearsold, following in the footsteps of his dad.
“My dad just signed me up because he played footy and wanted me to play footy,”
Jamar said.
“And I just turned out to be gunfire!”
Cooper Robinson has been playing the sport since he was six, with both his parents avid fans of the sport.
“My dad says, ‘play your own game, don’t worry about anyone else’,” Cooper said.
The boys have been playing together for years, with Cooper getting Jamar into the
SWIMMING
On Wednesday afternoon, Torpedoes who have been consistently training were invited to a special training session.
During this session, swimmers enjoyed using the new backstroke ledges and the new dive block kickers.
The coaches would like to commend Declan Dichiera, Jasper Korosec, Lucas Korosec, Koa Harland, Levi Smith, Indi Smith, Roxy Groom, Alex Trefz, Connor Lee, Stevie Lee, Harris Delac, Abi Maher and Evie Doherty.
On Sunday, a couple of Cannonvale Cannons travelled to Townsville to participate in the Townsville “Club to Club” Ocean Swim.
Congratulations to Jacob Bell (M12-19) and Nelson Malady (M10 – 11) who both achieved 2nd place in their age groups.
Jacob swam in the 2km event and swam a time of 28.46.90 and Nelson swam in the 1km event and swam a time of 19.54.37.
The Cannons would also like to commend Kyle Pevitt-Scott who swam the 2km event in 33.20.50. Coach Mark Erickson accompanied Raylene Rasmussen through the 2km swim, and they both enjoyed a leisurely Sunday morning pace.
During the week, the Cannons hosted the Annual General Meeting.
The Cannonvale Cannons are looking forward to hosting their winter carnival this Saturday.
game initially.
“I started when I was 10,” Jamar said. “Because he got me into it. We played this carnival together and I was a gun. I got the MVP of the game.”
Both boys have aspirations of making it big in the sport and playing professionally. Cooper has the short-term goal of making the Far North Queensland Rugby team when he is 14, and Jamar is looking into his future, hoping to make it into the Junior Cowboys.
“I’m going to play my hardest at Ipswich and look out for scouts,” Jamar said. The boys, with three other boys from St Catherine’s, travelled to Townsville to compete in the trials.
Of the 80 boys at the Townsville NQ trials, Jamar and Cooper are two of 23 who made the team, and will travel to Ipswich later in the year, to compete in the state trials.

Raiders Match Report
Last Saturday saw the top of the table Whitsunday Raiders travel to Lions Sports Park Mackay to take on the 6th place Kuttabul Camelboks.
It was going to be a challenging match for the number one placed Raiders side as they were without eight of their regular run-on players due to injury or work commitments. This meant that the Raiders would have to play uncontested scrums, and as a result field one less player meaning it would be 15 against 14 for the full 80 minutes.
Kuttabul are renowned for their physicality and their ability to rise to the occasion, especially at home, which is exactly what they did.
Scoring 5 tries to the Raiders 1 in the first half, leaving the Raiders in the unusual position of being behind 31 - 5 at half time.
Second half saw the true spirit of the Raiders shine through, with an inspirational comeback scoring two tries in the second half and keeping Kuttabul scoreless. Final score Kuttabul 31 Raiders 17.
Best on field for the Raiders were new man David Aspil with 3 points, Tom Humphries with 2 points and Darragh Lynch with 1 point.
Raiders head to Mackay this Saturday in a bid to maintain their Number One position on the ladder, taking on Slade Point at 3.30pm at the Cathy Freeman Oval.

Whitsunday United flying high with a massive home round!
FOOTBALL
Under 13 Div 1 played their best game of the season on Saturday with a fantastic display of positive forward play and pressing to get the ball back at every opportunity.
Goals went to Oli, Lockie, and Caleb. Caleb’s second goal from just over half way was an absolute ripper against the run of play and sealed the win.
This 4-0 win was against a Lions side that had previously beaten us.
The U13 prem team took the lead against Wanderers after a sublime pass from Shannon Matthews sent Matthew onto goal and although his shot was well saved, Sam kept the pressure up and was rewarded with the goal.
A well taken penalty by Wanderers evened the score with the game finishing 1-1.
15 Div 1 lost against Wanderers 2-1. Some great passing and movement we just lacked the killer shot on goal. Special thanks to the U13 boys who stepped up to help us out - Cohen, Will, and Matt.
The Paddy’s Shenanigans Div 1 and 2 teams faced off against Lions.
Unfortunately, WUFC struggled to create many chances, falling 2-0 behind at the break to scrappy goals. The second half, with the wind behind the team, was a different affair, but the equaliser never came, going down 2-1.
Our Div 1 team faced up to Lions expecting another tough match up.
However, the opposition had a number backing up with many injuries in the squad.
Lions went up 1-0 early on, but WUFC took control, hitting 3 unanswered goals, including a 40-yard screamer from veteran Richard Draper.
A comfortable 6-2 win makes it 4 wins in a row at home.
The Reserve women got some valuable points on the board this week with a 4-2 win over Country.
Kiki opened the scoring early for the ladies and continued to work tirelessly the entire game to put pressure on the Country defence.
Upfront Maddy put away two nice goals to keep Whitsundays in front the entire game and from the middle Steph’s runs paid off with the fourth goal of the game.
The Premier ladies continued to dominate with a 14-0 win over Country.
Despite dominating possession, and having many opportunities, the final touch lacked finesse and they went into half-time
break only 4-0 up.
The second half Whitsunday ran away with the game with the attacking group working together to keep the pressure firmly on Country Final tally of scorers was Willow(4), Lena(3),Laura(3),Steph(2),Bre and Eva one each.
Whitsunday Men Ressies were unfortunate to come away without any points against Brothers.
The team started well with Andrew Johnstone scoring a cracker within 5 minutes.
The lads pressed to try rescue the game but ended up losing 4-2 after chasing the game.
It was a different story for the Premier
Men against City Brothers.
The lads applied relentless pressure going into the break with a commanding 4-0 lead with another from Sherro and two from Smithy.
The second half saw the team playing the best football they have played all season carving apart a helpless Brothers.
The second half saw Sherro complete his first hat trick for the club and Delors finishing off a phenomenal team goal in fantastic fashion.
The full-time whistle blew with Whitsundays finishing 6-0 winners.

GOLF Veterans Golf Report
Last Tuesday Proserpine hosted the Whitsunday Veterans Golf competition. Eighty Vets attended with visitors from New South Wales and Victoria - a great field.
Fortunately, the weather was kind to us and the course was looking in excellent condition.
Robyn Whitham won the ladies comp with an impressive score of 39, continuing on her success from Gladstone, with Lyn Muller 36 and Jenny Hounsell on 35.
Gerald Lovell won the men’s with 39 also, Robert Thompson from the Penguin Golf Club on 36 and Geoff Harrison on 35.
On 27th June will be our Veterans Open,

Afleet of 14 yachts, with a total crew of 88 locals and visitors took part in last Wednesday’s twilight race conducted by Whitsunday Sailing Club.
A 12 to 15 knot south easterly breeze and flat water made for a wonderful afternoon on the water.
The start of Division 2 was close, with 4 boats crossing the starting line together, with just a small margin allowing QMS Ponyo (John Galloway) to take the Doyle Sails sponsored best start prize, with Treasure VIII (Rob Davis), Reignition (Charles Wallis) and Bobby’s Girl (Simon Brain) close behind.
By the first rounding mark, Bobby’s Girl held a slender lead over QMS Ponyo, Reignition and Treasure VIII while Smooth Criminal (Iyas Shaheen) and Twister (Kevin Fogarty) were playing catch-up after a slow start.
The racing at the front remained close, with Bobby’s Girl controlling from the front, crossing the finishing line 30 seconds clear of QMS Ponyo, while Smooth Criminal just got ahead of Reignition for third and fourth places.
After handicaps were applied, Smooth Criminal took the honours by 2 seconds to Twister, with QMS Ponyo third.
If the start of Division 2 was close, Division 3 was similar, with newcomer, Domino (Paul Dynes) just centimetres ahead of 4 other boats.
Once again it was Matchless (Terry Stevens) who led around the windward mark, never to be headed.
This left some very close racing behind, with Shiraz (John Cable) and Domino constantly swapping places, while Rossgo (Greg Hammon) and Masquerade (Tom Vujasinovic) keeping watch.
In the battle for second, Shiraz took the honours by 20 seconds over Domino.
On corrected time, Riff Raff (Dan White) headed Lighthorse (Dianne Forster) and Rossgo, with less than a minute separating 3rd to 7th places on corrected time.
Races continue every Wednesday from 4:30pm, with limited crewing positions available.

Barrs Receive Lifetime Awards 2023
Sea Eagles Close Clashes With Saints AFL
Whitsunday Sea Eagles hit the road to take on North Mackay Saints at Zeolla Park on Saturday with some close clashes in the higher grades.
Sea Eagles Senior Men worked hard in what was an epic battle with reigning premiers North Mackay Saints ending the day 39 – 44 down. Sea Eagles had their chances right until the final few seconds of the game and can take many positives away from the narrow loss.
Congratulations to Stephen and Sheryn Barr who were both recently awarded the 2022 Motorcycling Queensland Lifetime Achievement Award. The Barr family (including their sons) have been involved with the Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) right from its beginnings in 2009.
Sheryn has been the club secretary for six years and membership officer for 10 years with Stephen holding the president position for five years.
They attend the monthly committee meetings, are involved in building the club facilities and maintaining them, attend bike
practice and race events, and also run our canteen at these events.
Nothing is too much effort for the Barr family, they run a tight ship and they do it with a smile. The bike events would not happen without them and they are always willing to help out.
This lifetime achievement award is well deserved by the Barr family and to recognise their commitment and dedication to our facility and sport.
Our committee and all users of the facility congratulate the Barr’s on receiving the award.
Contributed with thanks to Tracey Stroud.
Billy Galpin continues his run of form in the midfield backed by Jake Turner and Brent Downie, while Ryan Lee and Mitchell Healey stood out in the backline. Sea Eagles will look to get back on the winners list this week against Bakers Creek at home.
Sea Eagles Under 17s also took on reigning premiers North Mackay Saints losing 33 – 40 in a match where Sea Eagles saw their share of the ball but could not convert in front of goal. The final term saw Sea Eagles almost 4 goals down however they stuck to the task and pegged it back to a solitary point. Saints managed to kick a late goal to seal the 7 point win in a close one.
Under 14 Sea Eagles met a strong and confident Saints who outplayed with connecting football while Sea Eagles tried hard in the contest playing out the game with a loss 2 – 62.
Sea Eagles Under 12s hit the road for the first time this Season coming up against a full strength Saints side and fighting as hard as they could losing 1 – 30.
This Saturday 17th June sees all five Whitsunday Sea Eagles teams at home to celebrate Family Day with face painting and bounce castle from 10am and water slide from 12pm. Juniors from 9:15am, Seniors from 1:50pm. Come down and enjoy the family fun!
