Established in 1867, Long Rake Spar have been supplying quality specialised decorative aggregates from its base in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District for over 150 years.

With strategically placed production sites, bulk shipping and dockside storage facilities, we offer a fully controlled supply chain. This offers our customers national coverage that can act quickly to their demands in an ever changing marketplace.

During this time our family run business has diversified into many market sectors by focussing on our key strength of supplying the most extensive range of quality decorative aggregates currently available in the UK.

Now sourcing materials from all over the world, our established product range is sold into a broad spectrum of industries.

This complete infrastructure, tied into an extensive transport network, creates a bagged product offer supplied in full and half loads from our distribution centres. We can also supply loose material loads either direct from the quarry, distribution centres or our dockside locations depending on the material type.

Setting The Standard

At Long Rake Spar we set the standard with clear definitions of our product gradings, weights and numbers per pack. We adopt the ‘Builders Merchant Federation’ Guidelines for weight which gives clear advice for both manufacturers and suppliers to follow.

Long Rake Spar facilities are certified to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems for the manufacture of decorative aggregates. This ensures we continue to strive to improve quality for all our customers.

All weights in this document are notional fill weights with tolerances in accordance with those guidelines.

By the very nature of some products supplied by Long Rake Spar, particularly in our ‘Boulders & Rockery’ section, piece sizes, weights and numbers per pack will vary. Such products all carry approximations for customer guidance.

This document, where product statistics are clearly defined forms part of our ongoing efforts to improve the industry standard.

Many of our poly bagged products undergo a washing and rinsing process as standard, this is identified by our ‘Icon System’. This procedure removes silt and smaller particles generated in the sourcing and production. This residue removal ensures it is not contained within the product weight, resulting in a cleaner more consistent product.

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact through a process of continual improvement in our operating methods. This is an integral and fundamental part of our business strategy for the future.

Sustainability

At Long Rake Spar we are commited to creating a sustainable future by doing our part in protecting the environment and wherever we can reducing our carbon footprint.

We are proud to have helped improve social and economic well-being of our local communities, through support of projects and charities.

Fleet vehicles

We are well into the process of changing our fleet of vehicles onto pure electric.

This will remove a significant number of tonnes of CO2 from our carbon footprint.

Packaging

All our plastic and bulk bags contain 30% post consumer waste and are fully recyclable.

Collection of empty packaging can be arranged through companies such as ‘Tradebe’ and ‘Biffa’, or can be taken to your nearest recycling drop off point.

Every tonne of plastic recycled saves 1.8 tonnes of crude oil being used.

Advertising

All external advertising is supplied on 100% recyclable material.

The timber for our displays is all sourced from a FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) registered company.

Suitability & Quantities

The key priority for any customer is getting the correct amount of material for their project as efficiently as possible. Here’s a simple guide to help you make the calculations for your customers:

What aggregate do I need for my application?

On many projects aggregates will be placed purely for aesthetic purposes, if so style & colour are the key. If the area is to receive pedestrian or vehicular traffic, the size & shape should be considered more carefully. Here’s some tips:

• Particle size less than 10mm is likely to get stuck in shoe treads and be tracked inside.

• Particle size greater than 20mm can prove difficult to walk on.

• If trafficked by foot or vehicles, or the area is slightly sloped, then an angular chipping, no smaller than 14mm is recommended. This will knit together and provide a more stable surface.

• All aggregates will migrate down slopes. Any gradient greater than 1:20, please seek advice from our team.

• Strong geological stones, such as flint, granite or basalt, are recommended for trafficked areas to avoid breakdown over time

What depth of material do I need?

Depths will vary depending on the chosen application, the ground conditions, ground undulations the and the material grading size.

The table below is a simple guide to help, but always review depth proposals with the actual material in question.

I’ve decided on my depth, so how many bags do I need?

The table below is based on an area of 10m2. These figures can be converted into other m2 areas. If you’re still unsure there is a simple calculator at: longrakespar.co.uk

Too little material can leave weed membranes visible and too much can result in pooling/sinking underfoot, especially on rounded aggregates.

Quantities suggested are a simple approximated guide. Long Rake Spar cannot be held responsible for any excess or shortfalls of material that occur as a result of using this guidance.

Goldpath is a self-binding gravel that creates stunning pathways with a cost effective, durable and textured surface. It’s suitable for a wide spectrum of applications from functional pathways in domestic and commercial settings.

A soft fine silica sand which is perfect for children’s play areas where a safe stain free surface is required.

This pale golden sand complies with British Standards both BS EN1177 and BS EN71-3.

Resin-bound surfacing has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity over the last five years, and it’s easy to see why. The product is low maintenance, SUDs compliant and has great aesthetic appeal. Resin-bound offers a surface that is both weed and slip-resistant. It’s now widely used for both domestic driveways, patios, larger commercial projects, pathways and parks.

Many of our products have been mechanically screened through meshes to define the material size specified. While screening offers a more consistent sized product, it cannot eradicate material particles that exceed the defined size(s) in one dimension. All material grading sizes and size ranges are for guidance only.

Boulders & Rockery products purchased from our sources are based on overall crate weight. Piece sizes and numbers per crates can vary considerably. All quantities quoted are approximations and should be considered as a average across a number of packs and pieces.

Quarried materials can be subject to varying contaminates. Every effort is made to minimise this with suppliers. Naturally occurring iron oxide/silicate and other metallic elements are impossible to eradicate fully. Such contaminates can result in staining. We are not held liable for this natural occurrence either pre or post installation.

Products identified in this document are primarily designed for domestic applications. Guidance has been given on all products suitability of application via a series of icons; general notes and the British Standards that are relevant to a products application has also been identified.

The responsibility of the product packaging quality transfers to the customer once it is removed from the delivery vehicle and has been signed for.

For all product handling and storage we recommend that a comprehensive risk assessment and method statements are produced to ensure safe, sustainable and legal working practises at all times.

This should include a full assessment of the ground conditions for safe stacking.
