Long Rake Spar is a family-run business, which was established in 1867. We have a wealth of experience in sourcing and producing decorative aggregates, expert knowledge of trends and product features and an overall commitment to quality. Providing the largest range of decorative aggregates in the UK, we continue to transform gardens and landscapes across the country and overseas.

We are proud to have helped improve the social and economic well-being of our local communities through the support of projects and charities.

All our packaging contains 30% post-consumer waste and is fully recyclable. We are committed to becoming a carbon-neutral company by 2030, which includes reducing emissions and investing in verified carbon reduction projects.

All external advertising is supplied on 100% recyclable material. The timber for our displays are all sourced from a FSC registered company.

We are well into the process of changing our fleet of vehicles to electric and have installed electric charging points at all our sites. This will remove a significant number of tonnes of CO2 from our carbon footprint.

Our environmental policy dictates that we only supply ethically sourced materials from sustainable deposits being operated within current legislative and ecological parameters.

Making the right choice With a large range of decorative aggregates to choose from, choosing the correct aggregate can feel like a daunting task. Thinking about the garden style you want to create can help with this choice.

Modern – white, blue and grey work well in contemporary designs.

Traditional – cream, buff, beige and brown suit traditional cottage gardens and wildlife gardens.

Application Considerations Driveways Chippings in a 14-20mm size are recommended for driveways. Angular chippings are preferred as they knit together better than rounded chippings.

Washed and Unwashed Our premium aggregates are washed to remove fine particles and silt from the product. This improves the aesthetics of the product for the discerning customer.

Unwashed products can be easily cleaned with a hosepipe or watering can once laid, and the fine particles will wash to the bottom, underneath the aggregate layer.

Pathways Angular 10-20mm gravels are suggested, along with special pathway materials such as Goldpath found in the Ancillary section. Consider using stabilising grids on slopes greater than 1:20.

Water features and ponds Many of our stones look more vivid when wet, making them look more striking when used in this way. If your pond includes fish, avoid marble, dolomite and limestone materials. When using a pond liner rounded materials may be more suitable to reduce any possible risk of puncturing the liner.

Raised beds and borders All products can be considered in these areas. The best beds and borders often use a combination of chippings, pebbles, cobbles and boulders. Shady areas can be lifted with lighter coloured aggregates.

New for 2024 Slate Path 0-12mm Slate Path provides an attractive easy-to-lay alternative to traditional paving materials such as flags, macadam or concrete. Slate Path is chemically resistant and is a beautiful natural plum colour that deepens when wet. The product is designed for a range of applications including footpaths and cycleways. The fine grading of the material ensures a compact, stable surface for foot traffic, which is easy to maintain. The finished surface is more stable than single-sized gravels.

Blended Loam Top Soil This high-quality product blends natural topsoil with peat-free soil conditioners.

Rich in organic matter and screened to minimise stone content, you can be sure of a consistent level of fertility. It is a value-for-money, multi-purpose topsoil that is trusted by both landscapers and builders for year-round planting performance. It is also suitable for general turf laying and garden landscaping.

Made from responsibly sourced ingredients within the UK, this topsoil meets the latest British Standard, 3882:2015, and is certified as suitable for home grown use. Blended Loam Top Soil is one of the few products in the UK that uses specially selected, single-source, natural sandy loam topsoil.

Bark Mulch Bark Mulch is of premium quality and is responsibly sourced in the UK. This cost-effective bark mulch provides a natural finished look for any garden project or landscaping scheme and contains no more than 20% white wood content.

Bark mulch reduces moisture evaporation and temperature fluctuations, helping to protect shallow-rooted plants from frosty conditions. It also suppresses weed growth and adds essential nutrients to the soil beneath.

The pH range is typically around 5.0-6.0.

Peat Free Compost An excellent value for money product, this premium, peat-free compost is highly fertile and produces consistent successful growing results. It is ideal for general planting or improving soil quality, where the organic matter content blends into the top soil, adding nutrients and improving structure to promote strong and healthy plant growth. Can also be used for containers, pots and baskets; however it is not recommended as a seed compost.

Peat Free Compost can also be added to heavy clay soils, to improve drainage and workability, or to aid moisture retention in chalky and sandy soils. It is responsibly produced in accordance with the BSI PAS100:2018 standard, using UK-sourced ingredients.

Wet Dapple Grey is a premium washed angular silver granite with black flecks and flashes of sparkle.

Wet Flamingo® is a 14-20mm angular chipping, which is a beautiful mix of pastel pink, cream and grey colours. Deepens in colour when wet. Ideal for driveways, rockeries and borders.

This product is supplied washed. Flamingo® is a premium product. Matching Flamingo Pebbles® are also available.

Wet Flamingo Pebbles® are a mostly rounded pebble, which are a beautiful mix of pastel pink, cream and grey.

This 20-50mm sized pebble is ideal for rockeries and borders.

It is ideal for general planting or improving soil quality, where the organic matter content blends into the top soil, adding nutrients and improving structure to promote strong and healthy plant growth. Can also be used for containers, pots and baskets; however it is not recommended as a seed compost.

Quantifying your project The key to buying the correct quantities is understanding the depth of material required.

This will depend on the chosen application and the material size.

The Suitable Depths table (below) is a simple guide to help. Remember, too little material can leave weed membranes visible, too much can result in pooling/sinking underfoot and displacement of material, especially with rounded aggregates.
