Industry Sectors Resin Bound & Bonded Surfacing Highly decorative products have been used extensively within resin bound and bonded surfacing schemes where a seamless slip resistant finish is required that is both hard wearing and aesthetically pleasing. This decorative range of products is promoted extensively through contractors, resin manufacturers and surfacing companies who combine all the relative components to provide resin bound or bonded surfacing schemes to architects, specifiers and members of the public.

Terrazzo Our products are used with seamless, resin-based and cementitious in-situ terrazzo systems, and cement based terrazzo tiles, to provide a polished decorative aggregate finish, ideally suited to large scale commercial projects, public amenity areas or retail showrooms.

Car Park Deck Waterproofing Systems We supply a range of specialist sands and fillers for use within resin systems to provide a waterproof and slip-resistant finish for roofing and car park deck systems.

Highway Applications

Dry Dashing

A range of Bauxites, Granites, Basalts and Slags are available in various colours and grades, providing an extensive selection of high PSV products suited to, high friction anti-skid surfacing, traffic calming and lane demarcation schemes. Our products are also used within Bridge Jointing repairs where a larger grade of chipping with high strength and durability values are required.

A variety of our products are supplied to produce a highly decorative, durable, exposed textured finish for polymer resin clad panels for the modular building industry.

Specialist Concrete

Many footbridges, ramps, walkways, wooden decking and treads on exterior steps now include areas of fine aggregate granules to combat the risk of slipping. Increasingly more and more of our hard wearing products are being applied to these types of surfaces to provide grip and minimise the risk of slip hazard.

A selection of dried gravels, granites and finely graded sands are utilised in the production of specialist cementitious or polymer based blends. Products are chosen for both their aesthetic qualities to add colour and texture, but also to improve physical characteristics of the blend, such as strength and ease of flow.

White Dolomite is used in the production of both architectural cast stone and kerbs or tunnel linings where increased light reflectance is required to improve traffic safety.

White Renders, Mortars & Paint

As significant importers of pure white dolomite, we can offer a selection of fine grade powders, sands and granules for the white lining industry, all of which are subject to stringent testing to ensure brightness values comply with required specifications.

White Dolomite granules and powders can be used in the production of white cement based renders to provide either a clean white render or for a through coloured render.

Technical Data Explained Our extensive product selection offers a vast choice of colours, sizes, textures and decorative finishes for the resin surfacing industry. However as our products encompass an extensive market sector, it is important to understand the part aggregates play in ensuring the suitability, performance and life expectancy of the finished surface. Where applicable, industry recognised full technical data is supplied and listed for the majority of our products. A brief explanation of these industry standards is listed below. However to further assist as a guide to the products suitability, and where industry data is not available, we have included a number index rating between 1 and 5 for all of our products, defined in the table below.

PSV = Polished Stone Value The resistance of an aggregate to polishing and therefore a measure of skid resistance. PSV should not be viewed in isolation as aggregates with a high PSV may be likely to abrade easily (high AAV). PSV values in excess of 58 are generally acceptable for highway wearing courses.

SRV = Skid Resistance Value A measure of the skid resistance of aggregate within the texture of a system. The greater the value the higher the skid resistance.

AAV = Aggregate Abrasion Value The resistance of an aggregate to abrasion. The lower the AAV, the more resistant the aggregate is to wearing. Values of less than 16 are acceptable for highway wearing courses.

AIV = Aggregate Impact Value The resistance of an aggregate to impact stress produced from a moving vehicle. Values of less than 20 are acceptable for highway wearing courses.

ACV = Aggregate Crushing Value The resistance of an aggregate to crushing. The lower the ACV, the more resistant the aggregate is to crushing.

LA = Los Angeles Coefficient The resistance to fragmentation is a measure of the toughness of an aggregate and is viewed as a representative measure of both degradation and crushing stress values. Values of less than 30 are acceptable for highway wearing courses.

Suitability Note Some of the gravel and shingles supplied may occasionally contain very minor concentrations of iron minerals, which upon weathering may result in areas of rust staining. These iron minerals occur naturally within the gravel deposits, and Long Rake Spar cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage suffered as a result of rust staining. By way of guidance to users of our products we have included the risk of iron staining (RIS) assessment on our range of gravels and shingles.

This guide is purely a subjective assessment, based on our own experience with these products and may be subject to change as our database expands.

The scale is defined as follows: * No likelihood of any rust staining ** No previous recorded instances of rust staining within this product *** Potential for rust staining within this rock type with recorded instances.

All images displayed in this product brochure are displayed wet, to simulate their appearance when used in resin. Please note that whilst every care is taken to provide an exact indication of the colours of our products, these aggregates are naturally found products which may be subject to changes in appearance, colour and size between process batches. It is therefore strongly recommended to request a product sample prior to any work being undertaken.

We supply full technical data, including grading, physical and chemical analysis on our full product range which can be downloaded directly from our website or requested via a member of our sales team.

Packaging We supply an extensive range of our products in various bag weights to assist with the formulation of composite batches and to meet the demands of the varying resin systems. Our products are also available in bulk bags or tanker loads, subject to prior arrangement.

Aggregates for Resin Bound & Bonded Surfacing Bound Resin Systems

Bonded Resin Systems

The main characteristic of a resin bound system is the uniform, smoothed flat appearance of the finished surface.

It provides a low maintenance surface that is porous/semi porous and hard wearing yet flexible and resistant to cracking. The system is applied by mixing the resin and aggregate together to form one combined blend which is then applied directly onto a hard wearing surface where it is trowelled flat to provide a smooth and uniform finished surface. Any of our products can be incorporated into this type of system, with most forming part of a more intricate blend, designed by customers wishing to offer a more unique choice of colours and textures. Aggregates with a suitability value of 1 can only be incorporated within a bound system for areas of foot traffic and prudently these products should be mixed with harder wearing aggregates to increase the overall performance of the system. Resin Bound Systems are recognised as being SUDS compliant and this resin system is also adapted for free draining Tree Pit Schemes where a larger grade of aggregate is used.

A bonded system, where the aggregate is scattered directly onto a top surface of resin, is designed to simulate the appearance of loose gravel with a more rustic textured finish. A low maintenance, hard wearing surface is achieved, however the system is laid much more thinly with the top layer of aggregate exposed and only part of the stone bonded within the resin. It is therefore more important to select an aggregate with sufficient wearing properties for each specific application, particularly in areas which may be subjected to vehicular traffic. Please refer to our suitability guide with products requiring a value of 2 or above for this type of system. Resin Bonded Systems are not SUDS compliant.

Aggregates Used in Highway Applications As associate members of the RSMA we work closely with the UK’s leading anti-skid surfacing companies supplying an extensive range of high performance Bauxites, Granites, Basalts and Slags in a variety of colours and sizes. These products are frequently specified within high friction surfacing schemes because of their high skid resistance and durability values, whilst also providing a long lasting consistent colour for traffic management applications. We also work with some of the UK’s principal civil engineering and construction companies where a selection of our single sized larger grade granites deliver high strength and durability values for use within other highway associated works such as bridge jointing repairs.

As one of the UK’s principal importers of White Dolomite chippings, granules and powders, we supply a variety of accurately sized pure white granules into the UK’s white lining industry. Certificated brightness values are available on request.

As manufacturers of the SightGrip Products we now offer a range of coloured Bauxites and Granites.

These coloured aggregates are hard wearing, skid resistant and provide high visibility.

Anti-Slip Surface Coatings COLOUR COATED AGGREGATES FOR DEMARCATION APPLICATIONS A selection of high specification pigmented aggregate granules are supplied into traffic demarcation applications in both foot and road grade. This collection of six core industry colours can be replicated onto a selection of Bauxites, high performance Granites or White Grip, all giving slightly different colour density and performance values. Aggregates and Sands for Resin Flooring As associate members of FeRFA we work closely with the UK’s resin flooring companies to supply a variety of decorative finishes for use within interior or exterior resin flooring applications. The aggregates used in any flooring system are often the most critical, yet underestimated part of the system, providing strength, colour and often physical properties that are pre-requisite to ensure the lifespan of the resin floor finish. As almost any of our dried aggregates can be utilised to create an exposed, decorative, hard wearing, functional finish, it is imperative to seek technical advice to ascertain which aggregates are suited to which systems (FeRFA types 1-8). Fine grade sands are used within resin flooring or car park decking systems as they provide a textured surface which serves as an integral key between the layers. Sands & Powders A selection of cost effective kiln dried sands in various grades are included within resin systems to add a degree of slip resistance.

Dried sands are also used to provide a receiving key between system layers and existing surfaces.

Most resin systems incorporate powders and dolomite fines as bulk extenders or colour receivers.

We offer the facility to contract blend any of our sands and powders to comply with stringent customer specifications.

Aggregates for Grouts, Renders and Cementitious Formulations A selection of products, chosen for their aesthetic qualities of colour and texture, whilst also aiding the performance or the physical characteristics of a blend, such as the strength or ease of flow.
