Dr. Joan Schumacher is a 1983 graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been practicing small animal medicine in the Eau Claire area for more than 30 years. In 2003, Dr. Schumacher joined the staff at Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital where she works with cats, dogs and occasionally pocket pets.

A member of the WVMA since 2004, Dr. Schumacher enjoys that her membership allows her the opportunity to connect with old friends while also meeting new veterinarians.
“I attend as many meeting as I can along with the WVMA Convention,” she says. “I find the speakers to deliver timely information that I can come home and use right away.” In relation to her career, Dr. Schumacher says caring for generations of clients and their pets has been the most memorable. “I have seen grown children with families of their own bring in their first pets and tell me they remember coming in with their parents and a new puppy or kitten,” she says. “I have met so many wonderful animals and their humans over the years.” Within her community, Dr. Schumacher has been involved by volunteering through many animal activities. Four times a year she teaches a Pets and Babies class for expecting parents. “Soon to be parents have a lot of questions about how their dogs and cats will react to a new baby in the house and we address behavior and health concerns,” she explains. “I share tips for preparing their pets before and after the baby arrives.” Dr. Schumacher has also been involved in teaching veterinary medicine classes at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and is on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Within her community, she has presented to 4-H clubs as well as cat, dog and horse clubs. For students currently in veterinary medical school, Dr. Schumacher recommends working hard, but to take time for yourself. “Your future clients will expect your best and that you will take good care of their pets,” she says. “To do that, you need to remember that life is a balance. Don’t forget to have fun and pursue other passions too.” Dr. Schumacher shares her home with her family which includes two Golden Retrievers and a cat. She has two children, a daughter she enjoys showing Quarter Horses with, and a son who practices veterinary medicine in Portage, Wis. l

In August, I addressed the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2021 during orientation. Thirty years previous, nearly to the day, I was in that seat for orientation of the Class of 1991. This opportunity gave me pause; reflecting my point of reference regarding veterinary medicine, a message to share once more.
Increase our legislative engagement; the Wisconsin legislature’s actions directly affects many WVMA members’ professional and business activities. Participate on the WVMA Legislative Committee, financially support both the WVMA and the AVMA PAC’s. Access to veterinary medical care is receiving growing focus nationwide; 23,000,000 pets are estimated to have no access to veterinary medical healthcare. Let’s seize this opportunity. Get creative and devise business models to turn this need into profitable demand for veterinary services.

In veterinary medicine, we hear and talk about client compliance and retention. And there are sound numbers to support the importance of compliance and retention. But, what’s equally important is employee retention and its correlation to client retention. 70 percent of employees quit their managers, not their jobs. Do you know what employee turnover is costing you? What is your turnover percentage? What is it costing the clinic on an annual basis? If you can get a handle on these costs, you have powerful information. Information that can help you make sound decisions that will lead to increased profitability and efficiency. When “googling” veterinary medical turnover, I was surprised at what a small amount of results returned. So I cast a larger net and found an article written by Jack Altman, CEO of Lattice, which ran in the Huffington Post earlier this year. It stated the cost of losing an employee can range from tens of thousands of dollars to 1.5-2.0 times the employees annual salary. Where do they get these numbers? The costs in this figure include: hiring, onboarding, training, ramp time to peak productivity, the loss of engagement of others due to high turnover, higher business error rates and general culture impacts, states Josh Bersin of Deloitte. He goes on to state that other studies report the cost of turnover to be higher. A paper from the Center for American Progress, drew attention to 11 research papers published over a 15 year period. These papers conclude that the cost of turnover in a highly skilled job is 213 percent of one year’s compensation for that role. Regardless of what study you read, the cost is high. To help you get a handle on the costs, Altman offers up this simple formula to help: your practice’s cost of employee turnover is equal to the number of departures multiplied by the average cost of those departures. The number of departures will equal your number of employees’ multiplied by your annual turnover percentage. When analyzing the expenses, start with four major buckets: cost of hiring, cost of onboarding and training, cost of learning and development and cost of time with the role unfilled.

Updated Fentanyl Resources Available for Workers, including Police K-9s Performing Detection Activities By the National Institute for Occupational Health
The National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOSH) has updated their Fentanyl topic page, Protecting Workers at Risk. On the new page, NIOSH identified job categories where emergency responders might come into contact with fentanyl or its analogues. Police K-9s are included in the recommendations because they may participate in investigations and handle evidence. A video created by the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine is available on the Protecting Workers at Risk page as an educational tool for licensed veterinarians who might be asked to assess and treat potentially exposed working dogs. This video should not be used as a substitute for a consultation with a treating veterinarian. As has been widely reported, Congress has (so far) failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). What does that mean for you and your veterinary practice in the state of Wisconsin?

If you offer group health plan coverage to eligible employees, then you should talk to your insurance agent about the options currently available to you. The insurance market is changing, with some insurers no longer selling group health insurance, or no longer selling individual health insurance through the ACA public exchanges (www. healthcare.gov). Group health plan coverage is different from individual health insurance coverage, and subject to different rules. Group coverage is purchased by employers for its eligible employees; individual coverage is purchased by individuals. Thanks to a provision in the 21st Century Cures Act, signed by President Obama in December 2016, a small employer (under 50 full-time or full-time equivalent employees) can adopt a “qualified small employer health reimbursement arrangement” (QSEHRA) to reimburse employees on a tax-free basis for the premiums they pay for individual health insurance, subject to certain restrictions. In the “Legal Briefs” column for February 2017, I wrote about QSEHRAs and how they work.
In summary, despite (or perhaps because of) the failure to repeal and replace the ACA, health insurance continues to be an important expense and a potentially-valuable employee benefit for many veterinary practices. Your insurance agent knows what health insurance options are available in your county. l
As explained in that column, a QSEHRA must be available to generally all employees, except for those who have been employed for fewer than 90 days, who are under age 25, or who are part-time (less than 25 hours per week) or seasonal (less than 7 months per the year). If you wish to benefit only some employees, without having to establish a QSEHRA, then you should simply pay them increased cash

Lower Back Pain and Injury in the Veterinary Profession By Leslie Ptak, Department of Labor/OSHA compliance assistance specialist Lower back is the scourge of the workers’ compensation rolls, contributing to injuries resulting in costly medical treatment, days away from work, and disability. Understanding how the back works and the physics of lifting is the beginning of reducing lower back injuries. Although any region of the spine can be injured at work, this article will focus on the lower back. Statistics show that 80 percent of adults will experience pain in this area at some point in their lives1, and ninety-five percent of all herniated discs are in this region. Can all the risky activities in veterinary clinics that contribute to low back pain be eliminated? No, but they can be reduced. There also are things that veterinary staff can do off the job to take care of their backs and reduce the chances of pain and injury. Common back injuries include: • Back strains • Back sprains • Herniated discs • Ruptured discs
What are the weight limits for the L1-L5 region? It is generally accepted by the organization2 that studies workplace lifting that an individual using perfect posture can lift a 75 pound object without injuring their back. So, never lift anything that weighs more than 75 pounds and you will not be injured, right? Actually, there are caveats. First, that person is healthy, in good physical condition, and is male. The object is held close to the front of the body during the lift, the object is never raised above the shoulders, the object is never lowered below the hips, the back is never twisted, and the person is able to get a firm grasp of the object. How many lifts like these take place in the typical veterinary clinic? (Generally, with the same exceptions, females can lift 50 pounds.) So the limits begin at 75 pounds and decrease, depending on how the body is positioned during the lift and the person’s gender. Ergonomics’ Basic Three

Work station changes - Once the survey is completed, consider changes to the workplace. These changes need not be expensive and workplace changes can be gradual as staff learns what works best. • Are there carts or lifting devices to transport the object or patient? • Can work surfaces or storage areas be raised or lowered? • Can patients be placed in containers to make them easier to hold? • Can sit to stand work stations be used? This article includes a list of products available online to make postures less awkward (See Resources). Click through the suggested links to determine if any of the products provide solutions for your clinic. Care and Consideration of the Lower Back As veterinary staff learns, caring for animals can be a physically demanding profession. There are measures that individuals can take to counter the effects of not being able to use perfect posture throughout the day. These include:
(2) Develop a strong core. A routine exercise regimen to increase core strength (and prevent muscle imbalances) can be a really effective preventative measure against lower back problems. One example of such a program is the Cox Core Exercise Program (See Resources). (3) Get out of that chair. Research has shown that prolonged sitting is unhealthful, contributing to serious health conditions and a nearly 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause. (4) Hyperextension is good. Leaning forward is flexion of the spine which generates force on the lower back. The opposite is hyperextension of the spine. Standing and extending your back, gently, eases the effects of all the flexion that takes place during the day. Lying prone, propped up on your elbows for a few minutes, is a hyperextended position. Taking time throughout the day for five, ten or 15 standing hyperextensions, and another 15 minutes in the evening, counters the effects of all the flexion you could not avoid at work. (5) Don’t do the twist. Avoiding a twisted posture is a matter of designing work so that the shoulders are always aligned with the feet. It also is a matter of situational awareness. Where are your feet in relation to your shoulders, and can a twisted posture be avoided during lifts?

Let’s do a quick sample run. If you are a 25 person company with 15 percent annual turnover and you spend $10,000 per person on hiring, $5,000 on onboarding, $12,000 on development, and lose $15,000 in productivity opportunity cost on average when refilling the role, then your annual cost of turnover would be: $157,500 a year. Import Requirements For Hurricane Region Dogs Still In Place By the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection As images of dogs left behind during the hurricanes permeate social media and news stories are written about rescue organizations bringing dogs to Wisconsin, DATCP recommended that adoptive families exercise caution when adding a rescue dog to their household. Veterinarians should also be watchful of new clients bringing dogs from the hurricane region in for care. Since heartworm is prevalent in the southeastern United States, we advise you to test for heartworm, start preventive treatment and suggest the new owners implement mosquito control measures in their household. While the disease cannot be transmitted directly from animal to animal, other dogs and cats are at risk of contracting heartworm as long as mosquitoes continue to fly around our pets. If any of your clients are rescues or shelters, you should also be aware that import requirements remain unchanged despite the
emergency situation. As you work with your rescue and shelter clients, ensure that the dogs are accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) and the dogs have a current rabies vaccination. Any dog found to be positive on a heartworm test in the state of origin must have completed the appropriate heartworm treatment protocol before entering the state. An untreated positive dog may only be imported to Wisconsin if a special import permit is issued by the Wisconsin State Veterinarian. You should check paperwork to ensure that the rescues you work with are following all applicable regulations. More from DATCP We continue to receive reports of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) in horses. Wisconsin currently has confirmed more than 11 cases of EEE and more than 13 cases of WNV this year. In most cases the horses have been unvaccinated for either virus. Urge your equine clients to have their horses vaccinated to avoid further infections. State and federal veterinarians continue to investigate swine vesicular cases at slaughter facilities. To date, we have investigated more than 550 cases, all of which have been negative for FMD and most positive for Senecavirus A. DATCP is working with other state veterinarians to discuss possible causes and solutions.

Fall Home Maintenance Tips By Marilyn Cook, Professional Insurance Programs Source: Safeco 10 Things to Do to Prepare Your Home for Fall Fall is a wonderful time in Wisconsin— if your home is ready for it. Yes, this is the time of year to fix small problems before they become big, and big ones before they become catastrophic. Here are 10 tips to help: 1.
Look up. Examine your roof closely. Remove moss, clear debris from your gutters and downspouts, and repair any damage.
2.
Look down. Check for signs of animals and insects around your home and garage, including in the basement and crawlspace. Bring in a professional to get rid of unwanted guests.
3.
Keep things warm. Heat escapes through leaks around windows and doors, so seal up any drafty areas. Outside, put covers over faucets before temperatures drop.
4.
Keep things dry. Drain outdoor hoses, faucets and irrigation systems. Look in the basement and crawlspace for wet spots. And, make sure your water heater or boiler isn’t leaking.
5.
Clear the air (or vents and filters, at least). When’s the last time you checked your dryer vent? You should take a look at attic vents and exhaust ducts, as well. And, change that furnace filter!
6.
Take a walk. Cracks in your driveway or walkways will only get bigger, so get them fixed soon. If your deck has signs of wear, make repairs now.
7.
Get a tune-up. You or a professional should clean and tune your furnace, boiler and/or water heater, as well as your oven and range.
8.
Don’t play with fire. Before building your first fireplace fire of the season, check for soot or creosote build-up.
9.
Don’t play with fire extinguishers, either. But, check them to ensure they still have pressure. Don’t have fire extinguishers? Put them on your shopping list, ideally one for each floor.
10. Don’t forget those smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors. Replace batteries when needed, and test regularly that alarms are working.
