Advocacy vs. Politics: What is the WVMA Advocacy Program?

14-19 Classified Ads

When thinking about your holiday gift-giving this year, please consider making a gift to the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Foundation (WVMF). All donations are 100% taxdeductible and will allow the Foundation to fund programs helping animals, people and communities throughout Wisconsin. WVMF priorities include programs for veterans and their pets, disaster relief assistance for animals during natural or man-made disasters, pet care education programs and scholarships for veterinary medical students. One-time gifts or recurring monthly gifts are welcome. The Foundation Board will award funds several times per year to worthy non-profit service organizations. Grant applications can be found on the WVMF website at www.wvmfoundation.org. Additionally, the WVMF recently introduced the Kindred Companions Memorial Fund. This program allows veterinary clinics, hospitals and their clients to commemorate and celebrate the lives of pets that have passed on by donating to the WVMF in the name of that animal. By donating $10 or more in honor of the family’s pet, hospitals and clinics can provide some comfort to the family who lost their beloved animal, while also supporting the fundraising initiatives of the Foundation. Upon receiving the donation, the WVMF will send a heartfelt, personalized card conveying sympathy for the family’s loss, letting them know a donation has been made in honor of their pet. For more information about the Foundation or Kindred Companions Memorial Fund, or to make a tax-deductible gift, please visit our website at www.wvmfoundation.org, call the WVMF office at 608-257-3665 or email Jodi Legge at jlegge@wvma.org. l

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Adapting to Change

Dr. Alan Holter

Last month, I introduced the WVMA’s general outline for the upcoming year and all the exciting changes that will be happening. Change is difficult, but often times necessary when an organization continually tries to meet the needs of its members. I have been talking to local veterinary associations, people involved with the WVMA and veterinarians around the state about all the changes, and the general response has been that change is going to happen and for the most part, people are looking forward to the changes. This caused me to think about the significant changes veterinarians have gone through over the years. I grew up with my father taking emergency calls as a large animal veterinarian. As a kid, I was thrilled to go out on calls with dad when not in school and on weekends, not realizing he worked 24/7. My mother tells the story of senior year in veterinary school when the student wives were “taught” how to talk to farmers and answer emergency calls. No one questioned that the veterinarian’s wife would need to take a responsible role in her husband’s profession.

a two-way radio that was also installed in our house. This meant that not only was I on call every fourth night, but my wife was on call as well. Change came over the years. Cordless phones allowed my wife and me to go into the backyard with our two young children when we were on call. Then came the bag phone that I could have in the truck, so my wife did not have to wait up at night for me to call in after an emergency to tell me about another call. Answering services and pagers came next. Changes continued with cell phones, texting and telemedicine. Whether I like it or not, technology will continue to change the way I practice veterinary medicine! Our WVMA is also changing to keep up with technology and the challenges of our veterinary profession. Our Executive Director, Kim, introduced many of these changes in previous newsletter articles, and will continue to keep you up to date. I know change by definition is something different, but with a clear vision, the Executive Board is excited to see what is in store for the next year.

We will continue to communicate using all of the technology I came to Dodgeville in 1990 to work as a large animal veterinarian. available, but I cannot predict what “emergency calls” will look like 30 years from now! l At the time, I had to live in town so phone lines could be run to our house with the clinic’s phone number. When I was on call for emergencies, I had to turn on the clinic phone to take the calls. When I was out on a call, my wife had to be in the house in case another phone call came in. If one did, she then had to call me on

WVMA Membership Now Open to Clinic Team Members!

Kim Brown Pokorny

Don’t miss this opportunity! Clinic team members can now join the WVMA and take advantage of the resources, monthly CE events, advocacy representation and more that is currently available to our members. The clinic team member category was approved by the WVMA membership earlier this year. For a limited time, we’re offering special pricing on this new member category for team members who are part of a clinic where one or more veterinarians are WVMA members. What does this mean? For every clinic where the veterinarians have paid their 2019 WVMA dues, clinic staff members can become WVMA members for $20 each. Following the promotional period, the clinic staff member rate will increase to $45 per person. Either way it’s a great value, allowing clinic staff the opportunity to register for WVMA CE events at the member price, essentially paying for the membership fee after just one event. Are you ready to join the WVMA? Go to www.wvma.org to check if your clinic veterinarian(s) renewed their WMVA membership for 2019. Once that step is complete, follow the instructions to enroll clinic staff members. Don’t delay! This promotion will expire on February 15, 2019! l

LEGAL BRIEFS

Veterinary Practices and Doing Good for the Community as “Certified B Corps” By Brian L. Anderson, DeWitt Ross Stevens S.C. If you believe that besides providing quality animal health-care services, your veterinary practice has a responsibility to the broader community (i.e., a responsibility to improve society and the environment), then you may want to publicly show that responsibility by having your veterinary practice become a “Certified B Corp.” Doing so could help you obtain clients and increase your employee satisfaction. According to Wikipedia, as of August 2018, over 2,600 Certified B Corporations exist across 150 industries in 60 countries. Some well-known Certified B Corps include Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, New Belgium Brewing Company, Etsy and Warby Parker. They also include many smaller professional-service businesses, including architecture firms, law firms and dental practices. Veterinary Specialty Center, Inc. (VSC), in Buffalo Grove, Ill., is the first veterinary hospital in the U.S. to become a Certified B Corp. To obtain B Corp certification, a business goes to the B Lab Company website (bcorporation.net) and evaluates itself through the “B Impact Assessment.” B Lab Company is a Pennsylvaniabased 501(c)(3) organization that provides the certification, similar to the “Fair Trade” certification that can apply to coffee, the “USDA Organic” certification that can apply to milk, and the LEED certification that can apply to buildings. The “B Impact Assessment” measures the positive impact of the business in areas of governance, workers, community and the environment. Businesses that score at least 80 (out of 200) points then undergo an assessment review process, consisting in part of a conference call in which the claims made by the business are verified. Businesses are required to provide supporting documentation and pay a certification fee that varies by size of company.

To obtain certification, a business might be required to modify its articles of incorporation or other organizational documents. For example, it might be required to become a “benefit corporation” as provided by Chapter 204 of the Wisconsin Statutes, which became effective in February 2018. The VSC website describes the veterinary hospital’s social and environmental mission as (1) using the resources of VSC to raise the standard of living in its community, (2) creating local jobs, (3) supporting local businesses, (4) prioritizing selection of vendors that share VSC’s values, (4) providing a living wage for staff, (5) supporting the professional goals of staff, (6) donating time and resources to community organizations, local charities and animal shelters, (7) having a positive effect on the environment, (8) emphasizing a culture of diversity and inclusion, (9) providing continuing education to share experience and knowledge with practicing veterinarians and support staff and (10) supporting families faced with difficult decisions or grieving the loss of a pet. Many veterinary practices could pursue a similar social and environmental mission and become Certified B Corps. Why go to the trouble and expense of becoming a Certified B Corp? Certification helps a business stand out, create a brand identity and thereby attract customers. A Certified B Corp might also attract employees who support social and environmental causes and would prefer to work for a business with an announced broader mission aligning with those causes. The B Corp movement does not appear to be a passing fad. It seems to have increasing momentum, perhaps driven by younger generations of people who seek more meaning and purpose behind the businesses they patronize and the employers they work for. l

MARKETING BEAT

Strategic Social Media By Jessica Eversoll, Botham, INK. Social media is no longer an optional marketing tool for businesses; it has become an essential platform for reaching consumers. There is immeasurable potential for social media marketing to increase profitability, however not all businesses understand the best ways to achieve those results. Done effectively, social media is one of the most engaging, costeffective and readily available forms of marketing in today’s world. Contrary to popular belief, social networking is no longer limited to millennials and their successors. All ages and all generations are engaging in social media use. The first step to building an effective social media presence is to create a strategy that defines how your company will leverage social media to achieve the overall goals of your business. Simply having a social media presence without an active marketing strategy to accompany it can be just as catastrophic for your business as having no social media at all. Start with a simple statement of intent that outlines the goals and measurable objectives for using social media, and target outcomes. Your social media strategy should not stand alone, but be an integral part of an overall marketing strategy, working in conjunction with other channels. To create a social media strategy you need to prioritize, execute, measure and optimize your efforts. The strategy should outline the platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, for example) and tools that will be used to accomplish your goals. Clearly defined messaging and a well-planned content calendar that details the frequency with which you intend to post are two strategy essentials. This framework provides initial direction and can evolve as you measure and analyze results. While the inclination might be to jump right to posting on Facebook, without an overall strategy, this effort isn’t likely to accomplish your business goals.

Pinterest and LinkedIn are just a selection of the social media outlets available. If you’re just dipping your toes into social media, your time and creativity will be best spent on a single platform. Become an expert in that one before moving on to another; it is better to be well-versed in one than mediocre at three. Goals and target audience in hand, you’re ready to plan your content. To do this, you need to define the themes and messaging that will be used. Next, decide how best to distribute this content. Whether it’s via your website, email or social media, the key is to focus on the 10,000-foot view during the planning process. Ask yourself and your employees: • What campaigns, events and promotions are coming up this month or this quarter? • What do we want people to do as a result of seeing our posts? • What is happening in the lives of our target audience at this time of year? • What broader conversations are happening outside of our organization that we should be involved in or leading? The answers to these questions will guide your messaging strategy and help define your brand across social media channels. Finally, it’s important to measure the success of your efforts. Each platform offers an array of analytics features that are relatively easy to understand, even for the novice, and provide keen insight into the ways you are succeeding (or not succeeding) at reaching your social media goals. Some important metrics may include: the size of your audience (followers) across platforms, engagement (likes, comments, shares, clicks), the number of leads generated and an overall assessment of sales.

Begin by ensuring that you have a clear definition of your social media goals. These should align with your other marketing goals and include things like increasing brand awareness, greater customer engagement, lead generation, referrals, in-clinic traffic and sales. Social media goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Think strategy first, plan second and lastly, implementation. Remember, the most important part is to monitor and evaluate your results. If certain activities are not generating results, assess the reason(s) and modify your plan. By simply creating a strategy, you can effectively direct your social media efforts to gain more customers and increase traffic and engagement.

Next, determine your target audience. Factors to consider are age, gender, location, income, education, behaviors and interests. From this information you can determine which social media platform will best reach your target audience. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter,

WVMA Member Spotlight – Dr. Colin Yoder Veterinary Medical School: Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine Graduation Year: 2011 Background: I did my undergraduate and master’s degree studies in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa, then went on to complete my DVM at Iowa State University. Following veterinary school I knew I wanted to work with dairy cattle – so I moved to Wisconsin! I’ve been practicing primarily dairy production medicine and also working with cow-calf producers at a large animal exclusive practice in Mondovi, Wis., since graduation. Value of WVMA Membership: Organized veterinary medicine groups such as the WVMA, AVMA, regional veterinary groups and specialty/species-specific groups (i.e. AABP) provide great value to practicing veterinarians. There are the obvious benefits like continuing education, but I think the real value in being a WVMA member is from the leverage it provides in advancing the profession. I highly value knowing that our collective voices can be organized and heard in front of the legislature and policy makers.

Dr. Colin Yoder

Most Memorable Part of Veterinary Career: There are always lots of great stories to tell as a veterinarian, but I think the most memorable thing has been seeing farms get better over time. I’ve been able to work with one farm in particular most of my career and watched their bulk tanks fill up, reproduction get better and milk quality improve greatly, in addition to seeing them move into a new parlor over the last 6 years. It’s great to be a part of helping farmers improve their operations and better their bottom lines. Advice for Current Veterinary Students: Graduation isn’t the end of your education, it’s just the start. Your four years in veterinary school are a great foundation, but to truly excel as a veterinarian, you’re going to have to continually stretch yourself and learn new skills. Veterinary Medicine Outreach: I was able to participate in a short-term mission trip with Christian Veterinary Mission. The trip allowed me to work with several local dairy producers in the Dominican Republic. In addition, I have had the opportunity to present at a few local meetings with beef producer groups. Additional Comments: I love the work we get to do as veterinarians. It’s given me some unique opportunities to translate my background in engineering to on-farm improvements by stepping out of the traditional veterinarian role. While what we’re asked/expected to do as veterinarians may change, we’re always going to have an important role to play in animal agriculture. Half of the fun is figuring out how we need to adapt to the future and gaining the new skills necessary to continue to be the experts our clients rely on. l

Make Home Safety a Priority While You’re Away for the Holidays Submitted by Marilyn Cook, Professional Insurance Programs; Source: Safeco Insurance The holidays can be a great time to get out and visit family you rarely get to see, hit the slopes or flee to the beach. Regardless of how you spend your time away, you need to ensure your house stays safe while you’re gone.

• Communicate. Inform a friend or neighbor that you will be away. Ask them to keep an eye on the house, and give them a way to reach you to report any suspicious activity. But don’t communicate your absence on social media!

A house left empty can be an opportunity for burglars, so before you pack your bags, prepare to protect the stuff that’s staying at home in Wisconsin.

• Forego deliveries. Make sure to stop delivery of packages, mail, newspapers, and anything else that could pile up on your porch. Ask your trusted friend or neighbor to pick these items up every other day.

At Professional Insurance Programs, we want to make it a little easier for you to get out of town with peace of mind and return to everything you left behind, so here are some pointers for prepping your Wisconsin home before you travel. • Lock it up. Check and double-check that you have locked all the doors and windows. • Check under the mat. If you store an extra key outside your house, remove it. Instead, give the key to a trusted friend or neighbor in case someone needs to enter in an emergency.

• Remove temptations. Do not leave wrapped gifts or expensive electronics visible through windows and doors. If you are the victim of a theft this holiday season, your homeowners and renters policies may offer protection. To know for sure, contact us at 800-637-4676 or info@profinsprog.com to request a policy review. From Professional Insurance Programs, we wish you, your family (and your home and belongings) a very safe and joyous holiday season! l

Advocacy vs. Politics: What is the WVMA Advocacy Program? By Jordan Lamb, JD, DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. The midterm elections have come and gone and many of you are breathing a sigh of relief for the much-wanted break from political commercials and election press coverage. But, the WVMA Advocacy Team is just gearing up to represent our members before the Wisconsin State Legislature. So, what is the difference between our “advocacy program” and “politics?” Let’s start with a review of the Merriam-Webster dictionary definitions. According to Merriam-Webster, “politics” means: “(a) the art or science of government; (b) the art or science concerned with guiding or influencing governmental policy; and (c) the art or science concerned with winning and holding control over a government.” It is the third definition that most people would use to describe “politics” – the art or science concerned with winning an election. In contrast, Merriam-Webster defines “advocacy” as “the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal; the act or process of advocating.” When the WVMA communicates with state officials who have been elected or appointed, we are advocating for the support and preservation of the veterinary profession in the State of Wisconsin – regardless of who won the elections. Our program is guided by the principle that we advocate for the best interests of the WVMA membership. We work in ANY political environment and with BOTH political parties. In addition to the State Legislature, we are intimately involved with communicating with state agencies, including DATCP and DNR, because they oversee various aspects of the veterinary profession. Most importantly, our advocacy program is separate from the politics of our individual members. But, participation by individual members in our advocacy efforts is KEY to our advocacy program! You – the veterinarians and veterinary technicians – are the experts on your profession and on your businesses. Share with us challenges that you are facing in your businesses. Our advocacy program will provide the link between you and the 132 legislators in Wisconsin (i.e., 99 State Representatives and 33 State Senators) who will vote on changes to state law that will affect your businesses. Our strong advocacy program is based on the WVMA being a trusted resource for the 2019 Legislature to call upon to provide insight into how state issues can affect the health and vibrancy of our Wisconsin veterinary businesses. As the gavel comes down in January, and the new state legislative session begins, we are ready to be a strong ADVOCATE for our members. l
