A Reflection on the Past Two Years and My Hope for the Future

It was an amazing opportunity and privilege to serve as a Student Representative for the WVMA Executive Board over the past two years. The best part of the experience was getting to meet so many fantastic people. The veterinarians and WVMA staff involved with the Executive Board truly care about addressing current issues in veterinary medicine, advocating for legislation that benefits the veterinary medical profession, and incorporating the next generation of veterinarians by being engaged with veterinary students. Over the past two years the WVMA has really reached out to students and provided more opportunities to them than ever before. At the 2014 WVMA Convention we had our very first Student Track. We had another Student Track this past October at Convention with various wetlabs that provided hands on experience for skills we do not get to practice in our curriculum.

We have also introduced the WVMA Student Resume Book and this school year we started hosting networking dinners at local veterinary clinics. The networking dinners are excellent for practicing communication skills and for providing students the chance to setup their own educational opportunities. Student members have also been exposed to the WVMA Food ArmorÂŽ program with an educational lunch meeting and a meat packing plant tour this winter. It is clear to see that the WVMA certainly does value their student members. The future of veterinary medicine in the state of Wisconsin looks very bright. I am optimistic the future of the veterinary medical profession will include some positive changes. I hope that enforcement and regulation continues to improve to allow only veterinarians to legally perform surgery, prohibiting lay people from attempting surgical procedures. Hopefully human physicians can work to bridge the gap with veterinarians to collaborate with each other for a successful One Health model. This would have a positive impact on public health, and improve public misperceptions about veterinarians. I hope that veterinarians continue to be an integral part of dealing with emerging zoonotic diseases as they arise. The problem solving skills and epidemiological knowledge veterinarians contain make them the ideal candidates to manage emerging disease outbreaks. Hopefully the mismatch between the massive amount of student debt to become a veterinarian, and the salary of a veterinarian can become more equal to one another. I am hopeful the mental health issues, high prevalence of depression, career burnout, and high suicide rate in the veterinary profession will continue to be addressed so those statistics can decrease in the coming years. Regardless of what the future brings, at the end of the day being a veterinarian is the best career in the world. There is no other career that is as versatile, respectable, exciting or rewarding. n

Isn’t it Great Being a Veterinarian?... Dr. John T. Been

I love the redemptive and ‘medicinal’ power of laughter. Good humor and that ability to peek at the circumstances of life with a sly bit of sarcasm can usually take the sting out of the most dire situations.... and as we all know, as veterinarians, we do bump into some dire situations along the way. As a relief veterinarian in the field of food animal service, I’ve witnessed firsthand a common thread among various office and professional staffs that truly have discovered and utilized that art of using humor to allay stress and disarm situations. That is not to say that you don’t take things seriously, but that anything you can do to decrease unnecessary stress, whether in the workplace or elsewhere enhances happiness and strengthens relationships. Our minister recently told our congregation that God gave us the ability to laugh because he WANTS us to laugh. He also put a little bit of silly in each one of us. Therefore, we owe it to our fellow man to act silly once in a while to give them something to laugh at! Divine sanction! I am sure that there are a few folks out there who might think that I got an extra dose of silly, but I suppose that’s better than a double dose of mean! In any case, considering wellness in the workplace and in our relationships with clients, humor is vital.

We are scientifically trained to diagnose, heal, reduce pain, and manage the health care of large numbers of patients and animal populations. In the course of our training and our focusing, it is very easy to become consumed in that identity as veterinary caregivers. Some time ago I jotted down an interesting quote that I have no source for. “Sometimes the song of life is what you do. Like a song that sticks in your head, you can’t shake it, but it becomes part of you, your favorite song, your oxygen, your identity. You can sing your identity, you can sing your profession.”

While having a uniquely strong identity with the responsibilities of care giving is certainly a positive thing, there are real and recognized risks to caregivers relating to the dangers of compassion fatigue. In February, the WVMA conducted a member survey to gauge the amount and type of unlicensed practice happening around Wisconsin. Over 50 percent of the respondents stated they have firsthand knowledge of unlicensed practice happening in their community and/or with their clients. This is a troubling number for many reasons, including animal welfare, public health, food safety and the future of veterinary medicine, not to forget the Veterinary Oath. The time is now to stand up and protect the animals you serve and the degree you worked hard for. I agree, in the past there have been roadblocks in Wisconsin to getting regulatory individuals to pay attention to unlicensed practice. The WVMA has removed those roadblocks through legislative and policy work made possible by your dues dollars. The door is now open to submit unlicensed cases. Complaints will be taken seriously. The WVMA was able to remove the first roadblock, but the next one is going to be a little more challenging because it can’t come from the association. The next roadblock is having the confidence to stand up for what is right and wrong. If you see or know it is happening, you need to file a complaint. It is the right thing to do. Several times a week, I get requests asking me to submit a complaint on behalf of an individual, but it isn’t that easy, as I don’t have first-hand knowledge of the individual(s), the practices being conducted or any harm done to animals as a result. I will certainly help a clinic or veterinarian work through the process, but complaints need to be submitted by you. I realize it is sometimes uncomfortable, but ask yourself these questions: 1. What is the right thing to do? 2. Is remaining silent breaking the Veterinary Oath? 3. If you don’t report the problem, who will? 4. Do you value the meaning and significance of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree? Not only for today, but for the next generation of veterinarians? There are countless other questions you can ask yourself. Take time to reflect. If we stand united as a profession on what is right vs. wrong, we will be stronger. Don’t Fail To Plan: Why You Should Have an Estate Plan By Bryan C. Esch, Dewitt Ross & Stevens, s.c.

As a busy professional, running your veterinary practice and caring for your patients, you may often feel you do not have enough time or energy to properly plan your own financial and personal affairs. You may value being able to make your own decisions about your finances, assets, health care, and raising your children, but may never get around to doing anything to make sure these matters are handled according to your wishes should you become incapacitated or die. You may have every intention of making a plan, but life always keeps getting in the way. Millions of Americans die or become physically or mentally incapacitated each year, and many have failed to do even the most basic estate planning. Failing to plan often means that critical decisions about your finances, veterinary practice, real estate and other property, health care, and your children and grandchildren are left to others who may or may not honor, or even know, your wishes. The only way to ensure that your wishes are carried out is through careful and comprehensive estate planning. The estate planning process involves carefully considering various personal and financial decisions and then implementing your plan through well-drafted legal documents, often with the assistance of a competent estate planning attorney. Wills, powers of attorney, marital property agreements, and living wills are necessary components of a comprehensive estate plan. Some may also use a Revocable Trust as their main estate planning document because they want to avoid the hassle, expense, and delay of probate. A good estate plan will establish: • Who will receive your assets (real estate, personal property, retirement assets and IRAs, life insurance, veterinary practice, etc.) at your death? • Who will handle your finances if you become incapacitated?

• When you die, who will handle your estate as your personal representative to settle your final debts and expenses and implement the terms of your plan? • Who will care for your children if you die while your children are minors? • What documents will be used to implement your estate plan (Wills, Revocable Trust, Marital Property Agreement, Financial and Health Care Powers of Attorney, and/or beneficiary designations)? • Will your assets flow through the probate process or will your estate be structured to avoid probate through the use of a Revocable Trust or beneficiary designations? • What will happen to your interest in your veterinary practice when you become incapacitated or die? • Will your children receive assets from your estate outright or will these assets be held in a trust until your children reach a certain age? • Who will be the trustee of any trust for your children to administer, invest, and distribute trust assets? • Are your beneficiary designations for your retirement assets, life insurance, and bank accounts current and consistent with your overall estate plan? • Will you give any of your assets to charity at the time of your death? You have the ability to answer all of the above questions and ensure that your wishes are properly implemented through comprehensive estate planning. Don’t fail to plan! n

Dr. Mona Hodkiewicz, Scot’s wife, suffered multiple serious injuries including three broken vertebra while injuries to their two children in the rear seats of their van were less serious. Miraculously, no deaths. Maintaining wellness is one thing, but regaining wellness after serious, even life threatening injury, is quite another thing. This book does a great job of relating the importance of the collaboration of professional expertise, spiritual strength, support from personal relationships, forgiveness, courage, optimism, and just plain luck to a return to wellness. Cost Benefit 101: Communication

By Darren Osborne, MA, Director of Economic Development, Ontario Veterinary Medical Association According to the most recent OVMA economic survey, annual client numbers are continuing to fall in companion animal practices. The most talked about reasons for the fall include a depressed economy and a possible oversupply of veterinarians. Feedback from the recently posted OVMA Survey of Pet Owners suggests another factor may be at play. A disconnect between the methods hospitals use to communicate with clients and client’s preferred method of communication might be a stronger reason. It seems the way veterinarians want to contact and the way clients want to contact is actually quite different. The good news is that clients preferred methods for communication are less expensive.

The 2013 Survey of Pet Owners was randomly sent to more than 8,000 pet owning households in Ontario and garnered a response rate of 10 percent (833 responses). Pet owners who responded included those that went to a veterinarian annually and those who have never seen a veterinarian. Most of the responses were from pet owners who see their veterinarian on a regular basis. When they were asked how their veterinarian contacted them for an appointment, most (57 percent) reported that they receive a postcard or a letter. The remainder are called at home, work or on their cell phone. Only 6 percent received emails and no one reported receiving text messages as a preferred method of contact. Results on the actual method of contact contrasted with the responses to how they preferred to be contacted. Only 34 percent wanted to be notified by a post card or letter, a whopping 23 percent less than the amount notified by card or letter. When it came to phone, there was a match between preferred and actual. A total of 49 percent preferred a phone call at home, work or on their cell. There was a big difference with those receiving and preferring email. Only 6 percent of respondents reported receiving emails but a staggering 20 percent reported that they preferred email as their form of

communication. Only one percent reported getting text message and 6 percent preferred not to be contacted at all. The trend towards phone and email is good news for practices because changing communication methods may lower expenses. By moving the recall system in a hospital from mail to any other “non-mail” method of communication can save a practice thousands of dollars per year. Cost of Letter Mail - $2,660 per 1000 clients booked

The most common method of communicating with clients turns out to be the most expensive. For every one thousand clients booked, the cost of sending postcards or letters and then booking them over the phone costs $2,660 or $2.66 per client booked. This figure rests on the assumption that 50 percent will respond to each mail out. While this response rate sounds low, it is a conservative estimate based on data from a limited number of hospitals who measured the responses from their mailed appointment requests. If you want a thousand responses and you expect a 50 percent response rate from each mailing you have to start with 1,143 clients. Your first


mailing goes to all 1,143 clients. With a 50 percent response rate you receive requests from 571 clients. That leaves 571 clients outstanding. The second mailing goes to 571 for a second request and you receive 286 responses. In the final round, you mail 286 and receive an additional 143 requests for appointments.

Assuming the hospital has a valid list of all emails, the cost of emailing clients costs less than one dollar per booked appointment. Sorting through the different methods one message is clear – mail is less preferred by clients and least preferred by hospitals wanting to get control of their expenses. n

Using Videos as a Marketing Tool By Jeremy Panizza, WVMA Marketing and Development Specialist

In 2016 there are more channels than ever to get your message to an audience or market your product or service. Facebook, Pinterest, Constant Contact and YouTube are just a few of these channels. Millions of people flock to these digital spaces each day to see what the world has in store. Most of these people are checking these channels multiple times a day to see the next email, post, tweet or video. A short 13 years ago, marketing was merely a simple strategy of television, radio and occasional online ads. If you had money, you could gain market share. That landscape has drastically changed over the last 13 years and in today’s market, if you have a computer or a smartphone, you can gain market share (well, you still need some money). In 2015 People Magazine compiled a list of 10 top YouTube stars who earn more than $1 million a year and who also have more than 1 million subscribers. TV Guide compiled a list of 15 more stars who earn six to seven figures and subscribers. They started with nothing more than a webcam and an internet connection (by now you’re saying get to the point). Utilizing social media and the power of video together can help gain clients as well keep the ones you have informed. More and more clients and pet owners are spending money on their furry family members and then spending can be misguided. Especially to those who are uniformed. Today people get their news and resources

from multiple places. Those above 50 get news primarily from papers or television, but those under 50 are using digital outlets for news, marketing and especially resources such as what clinic they should go to for their pet’s checkup. Clients are more apt to reach for or gravitate toward brands (your clinic is a brand) that are honest and real. Being real in today’s world is very simple and basic and an advantage for the veterinary field. Create a how to video that informs clients in an impromptu way. This will build credibility with the clients you already have, and through channels like YouTube and Facebook build a base of potential new clients. More and more surveys point to consumers making purchases based on those in their digital circles (Facebook friends). If a friend raves about the care they received from your clinic, chances are others will come to your clinic. Having an informative collection of videos for clients and a place for them to give feedback such as an email address or a Facebook page can go far. These channels together with customer service can build on current client relationships and create new ones. As Dave Matthews said, “To change the world, start with one step. However small, the first step is hardest of all.” n
