Dr. David Jeans Elected as Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association Treasurer David Jeans, DVM was elected as treasurer of the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) at the WVMA Executive Board meeting on October 7. “The veterinary profession is comprised of many unique and diverse individuals working in numerous, sometimes seemingly disparate fields within our profession,” Dr. Jeans says. “An organization like the WVMA provides a framework to hold individual members together through promotion and advocacy of the profession within our state.”

Dr. Jeans earned his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1985. From 1985-1987, he volunteered with the Peace Corps in Sierra Leon, West Africa. In 1993, Dr. Jeans graduated of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Jeans has been a member of the WVMA since his first year of veterinary medical school. He has also been a member of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and American Veterinary Medical Association for over 25 years. “As a non-profit organization, a member is required to act as treasurer to help with oversight of the money collected through dues, services and investments,” says Dr. Jeans. “Keeping the WVMA viable so that it can continue to provide the valuable services members are accustomed to is vitally important.” Dr. Jeans and his wife, Simone, reside in Evansville, Wis. and have two children. n

Great Convention - So Much to Celebrate! Isn’t it Great Being a Veterinarian?... Dr. John T. Been
I am writing this column after having had a few weeks time since our annual meeting and convention which took place in mid-October. What an exciting time, and for me it took a few days to ‘come down’ from the high that took place following all the activities and responsibilities of those few days. Attendance at this year’s convention was increased by both members and in the exhibition hall by our corporate booth attendees. Once again we had a fine convention highlighted by an exceptional and diverse array of speakers delivering continuing education opportunities for our members. Both the large and small animal tracks were uniformly distinguished with presentations that offered practical ‘real world’ CE that will benefit the attendees in their home practice life. New and novel surgical techniques, insights into swine and poultry diseases and procedures for practitioners, and a wide range of presentations targeting subject matter from neonates to end of life decision making were available. Other sessions were available to allow attendees to complete their training for TB recertification and modules for APHIS training that are part of federal accreditation requirements. Expert and exceptional speakers from the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine delivered well attended sessions on everything from clinical pathology to immunology to the neurological exam. Something for everyone! I’m so impressed with the fine level of CE made available at the WVMA convention and would applaud our staff and the convention committee for all their fine work in putting this together. Each year the annual business meeting is conducted during convention with highlights of current and new business. Changes to our bylaws were presented, discussed, and voted upon as well as our treasurer’s report. Dr. David Jeans was approved as our new WVMA treasurer and we certainly thank him for his service. One of my favorite activities of the annual meeting is the honoring of our 50 year members. This year four members reached that lofty honor: Dr. Wayne Benstead, Dr. Joseph Donovan, Dr. William Meyer, and Dr. Chester Swanson. Our Veterinarian of the Year was Dr. Doug Kratt – also our current AVMA representative to the House of Delegates. Congratulations Dr. Kratt for this well-deserved honor. I also had the pleasure of meeting and introducing our keynote speaker for the Saturday address. Barbara Natterson-Horowitz M.D., author of the bestselling book “Zoobiquity – The Astonishing Connection Between Human and Animal Health”. Dr. Natterson-Horowitz is a cardiologist
and professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and gave a most provocative presentation regarding the amazing correlations between human and animal species. I am reading the book right now and highly recommend it to anyone. To quote a passage, “Zoobiquity looks to animals, and the doctors who care for them, for answers to humankind’s pressing concerns. It peers back into our deep past – pausing, but not stopping at great apes or even primates on the evolutionary timeline. It opens our minds to the common illnesses and shared vulnerabilities of the mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, insects, and even the bacteria with whom we evolved and share the Earth.” So much of what Zoobiquity deals with dovetails seamlessly with our notion of One Health. Finally, I must say that our Vets and Vino event on Friday evening at the UW Discovery Center was a real pleasure and success. We were there with approximately 160 friends and colleagues to celebrate 100 years of our existence as an organization of veterinary professionals. We have had a proud and distinguished past and are poised, as our convention motto says, for a ‘future of possibilities’. The evening was kicked off with wine and cheese tasting and followed by a wonderful meal. We had a continuous loop of photos projected for the attendees to enjoy which highlighted memories of the past and harkened back to days gone by in our profession. I was particularly pleased that two of my favorite people on the planet, Dr. Barney Easterday and Dr. Daryl Buss were able to attend the celebration with us. These two gentlemen of course were our first Deans of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine and with sage guidance have made our veterinary school a world leader. Dr. Jane Clark and I shared a proclamation from Governor Scott Walker honoring the WVMA’s special anniversary and then a historical walk through of our history in a short program following dinner. Our fellowship continued through the evening with fun, games, and door prizes from drawings at our casino festivities (no real money!). What a fun night and what a great organization. Hard to believe we are already into the year-end again, but best wishes to all of you for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy productive 2016. Take a few minutes to listen to a rendition of “How Great Thou Art” by Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill on the web to put you in the holiday spirit. You’ll like it. ...Yes, it is! n

Controlled Substance and Unlicensed Practice Updates Kim Brown Pokorny
I wanted to bring to your attention three rule changes that recently went into effect. The Controlled Substances Board has, effective November 1, 2015, made the following changes: 1. Rescheduled hydrocodone combination products as a schedule II instead of a schedule III controlled substance (see http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/chr/all/cr_15_007); 2. Scheduled Tramadol as a schedule IV controlled substance (see http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/chr/all/cr_15_008); and 3. Scheduled suvorexant as a schedule IV controlled substance (see http://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/code/chr/all/cr_15_009). Secondly, with the move of the Veterinary Examining Board (VEB), to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), you should see increased customer service with your licensing questions. In addition, there will be a greater enforcement of unlicensed practice. To file an unlicensed practice complaint, go to: http://datcp.wi.gov/About/Boards_and_ Councils/veterinary_examining_board/index.aspx?ID=236 and click on complaint. All complaints will be reviewed and screened. If warranted, an investigation will be opened.

WVMA Member Recognized as an Industry Pioneer by the National Dairy Shrine WVMA Member, Robert Rowe, DVM, PhD, of Verona, was recognized as an Industry Pioneer at the annual National Dairy Shrine awards banquet on October 1 in Madison, Wis. Pioneers within an industry are known for more than what they personally have achieved, but what they have created and shared with others. Every year, the National Dairy shrine recognizes a few of these outstanding individuals for their contribution and dedication to the dairy industry. Each recipient was selected by an anonymous committee, and their portraits will be on display at the National Dairy Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis.
Dr. Robert Rowe
While nonsurgical embryo transfer technology is widely practiced in both the dairy and beef industries, its origins begin with the early pioneering work of Dr. Robert Rowe in the 1970s. Harvesting bovine embryos was once a very challenging task, involving dangerous surgeries with risky results such as the female becoming infertile. Dr. Rowe’s research led to developing an original technique of embryo transfer, without the need for surgery, and in the process created a reliable hormone protocol to consistently produce responses of multiple ovulations. The safety and ease of this new technique has enabled dairy and beef producers for the past 35 years to create more progeny from their best females.
At the time of Dr. Rowe’s discovery, he very easily could have kept this revolutionary development secret, as to gain a competitive advantage in the industry. However, Dr. Rowe’s regard for the ‘common good’ led him to share his discovery with all who would ask. He has trained countless veterinarians at numerous training sessions, helping to make his practice known and widely accessible. Today, his discovery is now a common practice, widely being used across the country and the globe. Additionally, his work has led to other technological advances including embryo freezing, splitting and cloning, as well as making it more efficient for international transfer of genetics. Rowe’s insight and knowledge has touched everyone across the dairy and beef industries, forever changing the methods used to improve cattle genetics. n

This may vary from the large animal veterinarian who provides a personal vehicle for farm calls on a full time basis to the staff employee who makes the occasional trip to pick-up supplies. In all events, both clinic and employee need to be certain that the appropriate insurance protection is in place.

WVMA Membership Approves Changes in Membership Categories At the October 9, WVMA Annual Meeting, the WVMA membership approved an updated set of bylaws. The updated bylaws include changes to the membership categories. Below is a summarized version of the changes. To see all the changes, visit the members only section of the WVMA website. Regular Member – A graduate of a veterinary school recognized by AVMA or licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin, with a primary residence in Wisconsin. Must be current in dues, in good character and professional conduct must meet the AVMA code of ethics. Can hold elective office, Executive Board, committee and task force positions and has voting rights. Cost $235/year
but not hold elective office or vote. Cost $125/year Veterinary Medical Industry Member – A company that provides products or services to the veterinary medical profession and professes an interest in promoting the work of the WVMA and promoting veterinary medicine. No voting rights and cannot serve on committees, task forces or elective positions. Cost $250/year Early Career Member – Veterinarian graduate from an accredited school of veterinary medicine qualifies for this category immediately following graduation and one additional calendar year after graduation. Can hold elective office, Executive Board, committee and task force positions and has voting rights. Cost $110/year
Life Member (remained the same) – Member who has reached 65 by January 1 of the dues year and has been an active (regular) member of the state association for at least 30 consecutive years. Can serve on committees, can’t hold elective office or on executive board, no voting rights. Cost $0/year
Student Member – A non-veterinarian enrolled in an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine and pursuing and advanced degree – may be a graduate student, an intern or a resident. Can serve on task forces and committees, no general voting rights, unless they are the student member of the executive board. Cost $20/year
Honorary Member – Shall be nominated by the veterinary medical association, an officer or the executive board. May or may not be a veterinarian. No voting rights and can’t serve on committees, task forces or elective office. Cost $0/year
Military, Regulatory, Public Health and SVM Faculty Member – An active member of the military, in state or federal regulatory position, public health position or faculty of the UW-SVM. Can hold an elective office, Executive Board, committee and task force positions and has voting rights. Cost $175/year
Non-Veterinarian Member – Not a graduate veterinarian, but is employed by a veterinarian or otherwise actively engaged in a position closely allied with the veterinary medical profession. Can serve on committees and task forces, but not hold elective office or vote. Cost $75/year Out-of-State Member – Veterinarian with primary residence outside Wisconsin. No voting rights. Can serve on committees and task forces,

Member Spotlight: Dr. Laura Bonofiglio Dr. Laura Bonofiglio is a 2010 graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. Currently, she is an associate veterinarian at Forest Home Animal Clinic in Franklin, Wis. At the beginning of her veterinary career path, Dr. Bonofiglio worked as an assistant at a small animal clinic near Milwaukee. There, she explored her interest in the profession while cleaning kennels, trimming nails and closely watching the veterinarians. “They were very encouraging when I told them I was thinking about becoming a veterinarian,” she says. “Their guidance and mentoring helped me decide to pursue veterinary medicine as a career.” After graduation, Dr. Bonofiglio worked at a mixed animal practice and later transitioned to an exclusively small animal practice. “The most memorable part of my career has been building good relationships with clients and their animals,” she says. “It is so rewarding when people trust my advice and feel comfortable calling me to talk over a problem.”

Dr. Bonofiglio also enjoys seeing the positive results of her work with treatments often quickly resulting in happier and healthier pets. A member of the WVMA since 2006, Dr. Bonofiglio values the regular communication that comes with her membership regarding issues affecting veterinary medicine. Within the WVMA, she is a member of the Public Education and Marketing Committee, which she joined as a way to become active in the veterinary profession outside of the clinic. “Working in small animal practice, I don’t very often have the opportunity to connect to the field of veterinary medicine in a broader way,” she says. “This committee helps the WVMA staff team reach out to the community and promote veterinary medicine utilization in Wisconsin.” For students currently interested in veterinary medicine, Dr. Bonofiglio shares the learning curve that comes with the first couple years of practice. “We have so much knowledge when we graduate from veterinary school, but learning what works well in a clinic setting seems simple compared to learning to relate to the diverse people who seek veterinary medical care for their pets,” she says. “Being patient and positive goes a long way toward building great relationships with clients.”
