We will premiere a new series, The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song, from executive producer, host, and writer Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Featuring interviews with Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson, this moving two-part special examines the role of the Church as the site of African American organizing, resilience, autonomy, freedom, and solidarity. And travel back in time to 1968 with Mr. SOUL! – a vibrant documentary from Independent Lens that chronicles the public television variety show SOUL! that celebrated all facets of Black culture and earned critical praise as one of the first platforms to expand the image of African Americans on television. And explore the fascinating life of Marian Anderson, the celebrated singer who triumphed at the Lincoln Memorial after being barred from performing at Constitution Hall because she was Black, in American Experience: Voice of Freedom. And don’t miss Gates’s Finding Your Roots: Write My Name in the Book of Life with musician Pharrell Williams and filmmaker Kasi Lemmons who uncover extraordinarily rare first-person accounts of their enslaved ancestors. On wttw.com, look back at Chicago’s groundbreaking first Black mayor, Harold Washington, and meet an important Black author tied to Chicago: Willard Motley, also known as Bud Billiken. WFMT will feature Black composers and performers throughout the month, including a Sunday edition of With Heart and Voice and archival conversations on Best of Studs Terkel. WFMT’s newest voice, LaRob Payton, will host Music of the Black Church, to preview the following week’s WTTW special, and Cello-Piano Music by Black Composers with youthful artists Itefayo Ali-Landing and Joshua Mhoon. And we’ll present an encore of A Beautiful Symphony of Brotherhood, paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On wfmt.com, find a calendar of streaming concerts and events featuring Black musicians and composers, and explore some memorable film scores by Black composers – from Terence Blanchard to Marvin Gaye to Kathryn Bostic. Their goals were simple – better pay, more advancement opportunities and an end to sexual harassment – but their unconventional approach attracted the press and shamed their bosses into change. Y
ou said in The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song that you have spent your career exploring stories about Black life, but this was one you never told. What inspired you to tell it now?
HENRY LOUIS GATES: Making this series (to my amazement,
it’s my twenty-third film!) has been a dream of mine since I first attended services as a child in Piedmont, West Virginia. When we began production almost two years ago, never did I imagine 4

that we would be sharing our film with audiences at a time when stories of grace and resilience, struggle and redemption, hope and healing, are so desperately needed, given all that we’ve lost and endured in 2020. In speaking with Oprah for the series, she said of the Black Church, “I don’t know how we could have survived as a people without it.” Her words were powerful then and are even more powerful now. As “we, the people,” contend with a host of pandemics in our society, from COVID-19 to economic devastation to racial injustice, I believe the history of Black religion in America can be a positive, uplifting force for
all. And that’s before we get to the music in the series, which knocked me out as we recorded it in the presence of some of the greatest gospel singers of our times, from Shirley Caesar to Jennifer Hudson.
This was a deeply personal story for you. What was it like to share this part of your life? GATES: You’ll see we end the series with a personal pilgrimage to the church where I professed my faith as a child in West Virginia. Heightening the moment was the fact that we invited members of the faith community there to a reunion of sorts. There I was telling them the story of my profession so many years ago – of the moment when I publicly accepted Christ as my savior – after making a vow to God that I would take that profound step if He somehow let my mother survive a health scare that nearly took her from me at that time. It was, therefore, an epiphany within an epiphany, and I found it quite moving to make that return trip to my hometown. Yes, this is a deeply personal series for me, and my only sadness is that my parents aren’t here to watch this one with me. Perhaps they’d be as surprised as I am that audiences will actually hear me singing on film.
astonishing came in filming for the first hour, when I learned that scholars today estimate that between eight and twenty percent of Africans dragged to North America on slave ships during the terrible years of the trans-Atlantic trade were practicing Muslims. Not only that, but the King of Kongo on the continent had converted to Roman Catholicism in the year 1491, which was even before Columbus set foot in our hemisphere. For so long, historians of earlier generations had fiercely debated whether
people and run independent of white society in America. Indeed, there were congregations like the First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, that were seeded before the Declaration of Independence was drafted. It’s remarkable. We also want viewers to come away understand that the Black Church is not a monolith. Instead, Black Christianity has a rich, complex, and nuanced history, with common roots but many branches. Also, for centuries, Black churches have been

Now we know that they not only brought their faith practices with them, but that those practices included the major religions that had already arrived in Africa centuries before.
What do you want viewers to take away from The Black Church: This is Our Story, When you researched this This is Our Song? topic for your film, what surprised you the most? For the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., going to church in America was also “the most segregated hour” of the week, and we explore that reality in our society as well. Overall, our mission is to explore the 400-year story of the Black Church and how it came to be such a profound
and important site of African American survival and endurance, grace and resilience, thriving and testifying, freedom and independence, solidarity and boldly speaking truth to power.
You mentioned that the Black Church is at a crossroads today. In your opinion, how will it continue to move forward in these turbulent times? GATES: I have no doubt that it will. Black Churches are interwoven with community life across this great country, and in a year that has brought so much suffering and reckoning to our fellow citizens, I am confident that the Black Church will remain a foundational site for truth, healing, and redemption. It’s far from perfect, as we show. No human institution is. But as a force for nurturance and hope, sanctuary and uplift, truth and justice, it is one of the most important and enduring anywhere. And as we work our way out of the pain we see in so many corners right now, Black Church leaders and congregations will continue to be on the front lines, as our ancestors were before us.

Music of the Baroque 2021 Chicago’s Music of the Baroque continues to celebrate 50 years, and WFMT joins in with delayed broadcasts of this virtual season’s performances. From January 24 at Skokie’s North Shore Center comes a complete performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons violin concertos, with MOB concertmaster Gina DiBello as both soloist and conductor, and operatic baritone Christopher Kenney, an alum of the Ryan Opera Center, narrating. The Four Seasons counts as one of the very first examples of program music, since they vividly describe extra-musical images like pastoral scenes, country dances, hunting expeditions, and storms. It’s likely that Vivaldi also wrote the descriptive sonnets that give clues to the music.

New from the Ravinia Festival Hear more recitals recorded late last year and early this year by the Ravinia Festival. In the first broadcast, cellist Oliver Herbert and his frequent recital partner, pianist Xiaohui Yang, play the first and last cello sonatas by Beethoven. The following week, pianist Dominic Cheli presents a program of music by the 20th-century composers Erwin Schulhoff and Carl Vine, plus some Beethoven, Clara Schumann, and Couperin. Then, violinist Andrew Sords and pianist Daniel Overly perform Cesar Franck’s Sonata in A Major. And finally, soprano Nicole Heaston, in partnership with members of the Elgin Symphony, brings us extended arias by Purcell and Handel, songs by Liszt and Jessie Montgomery, plus Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock.

Black History Month Programming February 2021 Join WFMT daily throughout February for a wide variety of music written by Black composers and recordings of performances by Black artists. Highlights include Music of the Black Church, hosted by LaRob Payton on February 10 in anticipation of the twopart documentary by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. airing on WTTW beginning on February 16. An encore broadcast of A Beautiful Symphony of Brotherhood explores the importance of music in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scott Joplin’s opera Treemonisha, performed by the Paragon Ragtime Chorus and Orchestra, tells the story of a teacher and freed slave kidnapped and then rescued from a band of conjurers. Best of Studs Terkel replays some of Studs’s many conversations with African-American artists, and With Heart and Voice shares traditional spirituals and original sacred-music works. Finally, LaRob Payton presents Cello and Piano Music by Black Composers featuring cellist Itefayo Ali-Landing and pianist Joshua Mhoon performing works by Florence Price and others.

From the Metropolitan Opera The Metropolitan Opera’s firstever staging of Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon (Cinderella) in 2018, starred Joyce DiDonato in the title role; also featured were soprano Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and singer-comedienne Stephanie Blythe as the farcical stepmother (Massenet also brings in the two ugly stepsisters). This rebroadcast from the Met’s archives is followed by Giacomo Puccini’s La Rondine, in a 2009 production starring soprano Angela Gheorghiu and tenor Roberto Alagna that updates the action from the 19th century to 1920s Paris. The story, set to some of Puccini’s most lyrical (and least-known) music, finds a “woman with a past” falling in love and contemplating – for a while – the start of a new life.

From the Chicago Symphony Orchestra On February 16, From the CSO’s Archives: The First 130 Years is devoted to music from and about Italy, including works by Verdi and Respighi, plus Italian-inspired creations from Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, and Richard Strauss, under the batons of Frederick Stock, Fritz Reiner, Sir Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim, and Riccardo Muti. Then, from the summer of 1971 during the orchestra’s first European tour, three Viennese choirs – including the Vienna Choir Boys – and a stellar cast of soloists recorded Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Symphony of A Thousand under the direction of Sir Georg Solti. The following year, this recording won three Grammy awards, including Classical Album of the Year; it was later remastered in the digital era.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Shanna has toured Shanna in A Dress in both the U.S. and Europe, blending humor and pathos through her songs. (She says she never wears pants, only dresses.)

From the Metropolitan Opera In 2017, soprano Renée Fleming bid a highly publicized farewell to one of her signature roles, that of the Marschallin in Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. The Metropolitan Opera’s production updated the setting from Vienna in the 18th century to Vienna shortly before the outbreak of World War I. The production also featured bassbaritone Guenther Groissboeck as Baron Ochs and mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca in the trousers role of Octavian. It’s a poignant and sentimental comedy about love and renunciation, and a longtime favorite of opera audiences.
