From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

This month, WTTW will bring you a new Jane Austen story, about the family of the famed author herself. The four-part drama Miss Austen reimagines a real-life event that has intrigued historians for generations – why Cassandra Austen burned her sister’s letters – and transforms it into a sharp-witted and ultimately heartbreaking tale of sisterly devotion. On page 4, two of the stars of the miniseries, Keeley Hawes (Cassandra) and Patsy Ferran (Jane), explain what drew them to the roles and how they approached their characters, what it was like to work on this series with a woman-centric cast and crew, and what they learned about the Austens and their world.

For Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, WTTW presents profiles of actor and activist George Takei and the enigmatic San Francisco photographer Michael Jang; two sobering documentaries about Japanese internment camps during World War II – Amache: American Experience, that tells the story of the 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent who were unjustly incarcerated after the attack on Pearl Harbor; and Snapshots of Confinement , in which Japanese American families share the creative ways they found to document their lives in the camps. For Jewish Heritage Month, Where Neon Goes to Die explores the rise and fall of South Beach, Florida’s Yiddish community that was created by Jewish immigrants after World War II; and Eva’s Promise, a poignant film that introduces viewers to artist Heinz Geiringer who hid his artwork before being sent to Auschwitz, making his sister Eva pledge to retrieve it if he didn’t survive. And finally for something completely different, an examination of comedy legend Mel Brooks as he looks back on his prolific career.

In May, WFMT debuts a new season of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival , known for featuring iconic repertoire alongside contemporary works. Listen as performers provide commentary about the festival, their experiencesin Santa Fe, and the music. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we’ll bring you an appearance by violinists Rachel Barton Pine and her daughter Sylvia Pine who perform with pianist Matthew Hagle on Live from WFMT. And we observe AAPI Heritage Month with a special episode of Introductions and a Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center program featuring pipa virtuoso Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet.

Thank you for your continued membership, and I hope you enjoy the month of May!

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

Miss Austen

A Q&A with Actors Keeley Hawes and Patsy Ferran

he new miniseries Miss Austen, premiering Sunday, May 4 at 8:00 pm, takes a literary mystery – Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters after she dies – and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty, and heartbreaking story of sisterly love. Once she finds the letters, Cassandra is transported back to her youth to recall the events that shaped their lives and laid the foundation for Jane’s unforgettable stories. Actors Keeley Hawes (Cassandra) and Patsy Ferran (Jane) reveal how they approached their roles, what they discovered about Austen’s life and work, and what this story reveals about the world of which Jane was such a keen observer.

WTTW Passport members can binge all four episodes of this series starting on the night of its broadcast premiere.

What drew you to the role of Cassandra?

Keeley Hawes: I was sent the script for Miss Austen knowing nothing at all about this story, and instantly I found it absolutely fascinating and charming. I think people will love it, because for anyone who is not aware of this backstory, it’s almost like we are getting a new Jane Austen story in itself, and what a lovely surprise that is. This is a story about relationships and families and what people mean to each other, and how we experience love, loss, and life.

How do we first meet Cassandra in the series?

Hawes: At the very start of our story, Cassandra goes to the Fowle family home in Kintbury to try to retrieve Jane’s letters. Isabella Fowle is having to leave the family home after her father’s passing - she is left with nothing after his death,

because she is a woman. It’s terribly sad and deeply shocking to think that that’s how things were.

Tell us more about Cassandra.

Hawes: I think Cassandra is an extraordinary woman for the time – for any time, actually. We meet her in flashbacks where the same character is played as a young girl by Synnøve Karlsen. The backstory itself feels like something from a Jane Austen novel – Cassandra is engaged to Tom (Fowle) and shortly after their engagement he goes away for a year and sadly doesn’t return. So, for the rest of Cassandra’s life she doesn’t marry or have a family of her own, despite second chances at love and happiness later in her life. That alone is heartbreaking, and I think it tells you an awful lot about her.

Tell us a little about your costumes for the series.

Hawes: I have a corset, but it doesn’t have to be that tight, and there’s nothing nicer than having a costume on and being able to forget about it. The corset is useful, however, as it makes you carry yourself in a slightly different way. Also, there are many black costumes in my section of the story as we are all in mourning for Reverend Fowle, but in the flashbacks there are these lovely blasts of color. It’s a great way of visually distinguishing those two periods.

Lots of women were at the heart of the making of Miss Austen both in front of and behind the camera. What stands out most for you about working together on the series?

Hawes: Within five minutes of my first meeting with director Aisling Walsh, I could tell this story was in great hands with these talented women – some of our finest actresses and the nicest people that I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

How do you think Cassandra’s act of destroying Jane Austen’s letters might have impacted Jane’s legacy?

Hawes: We live in the modern world where people are incredibly open on social media and in autobiographies, so I think there is something worthwhile about what Cassandra did, because we don’t know Jane’s innermost thoughts. That makes her a bit of an enigma, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t think we need to know everything about everyone – in Jane’s case, her work speaks for itself.

Tell us about the Jane Austen that we encounter in this series.

Patsy Ferran: Our writer Andrea Gibb has created a vibrant, complex, and wonderful woman in Jane Austen. I’m ashamed to say I wasn’t clued into her work, but I think that’s a blessing as I wasn’t paralyzed by expectations. In the script, I found a woman who was vivacious, highly intellectual, funny, and complex, but she’s also judgmental.

The reason she was such a good writer is because she was a sharp observer of the world and of society, so she makes her judgements as she lives her life.

Can you tell us about your preparations for the role?

Ferran: There were a couple of skills I had to develop for this role. One was playing the piano, which was an utter joy as I used to play as a child, and this role gave me the excuse to reignite my love for it. I also had to learn to use a quill and ink pen, as there are a lot of close-ups of Jane writing her letters to Eliza or writing her novels. Finally, I read some of Jane’s novels. I knew of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility through other films and visual mediums, but I’d never read any of Jane’s books, so I read Persuasion and

Northanger Abbey and didn’t realize what I’d been missing!

What is it about Miss Austen that you think viewers will fall in love with?

Ferran: What I love about Miss Austen is that it’s a love story between two sisters. Cassandra and Jane are best friends, soulmates, and the loves of their lives. They’re two women who decide not to marry, so they’ve created a world of independence. They have to rely financially on the men in their lives and must serve their siblings and parents, but they have a little bit of agency in their lives. There’s something extraordinary in this seemingly ordinary relationship.

At the age of 13, violinist Sylvia Pine has already won multiple international competitions; given solo performances in Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, and the Royal Albert Hall in London; toured as a soloist with the Tel Aviv Soloists; and performed Vivaldi’s TwoViolin Concerto with the Syracuse Orchestra (with Rachel Barton Pine, her mother, as the other soloist). A composer from the age of 4, Ms. Pine is currently the youngest member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Initiative. Her string quartet was recently premiered by members of the Civic Orchestra, and her work Rising Storm has been performed by youth orchestras across the U.S. Sylvia Pine joins WFMT with Rachel Barton Pine and pianist Matthew Hagle to play Sarasate’s Navarra and Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano, and, perhaps, her own compositions.

In the Spotlight

New York Philharmonic

Nathalie Stutzmann leads the New York Philharmonic in The Ring Without Words, a 75-minute distillation of Wagner’s Ring Cycle created by Lorin Maazel. The arrangement focuses on the orchestral music from the four-part opera cycle without any new musical additions and including only Wagner’s original music, synthesizing it into a continuous flow. Stutzmann, a Wagner specialist, praises Maazel’s reworking of the epic score, telling Playbill, “every intention, every color, every character, is set up in the orchestra. [Maazel] didn’t change one note of Wagner,” giving vocal lines to “exactly the right instrument.” The French conductor and contralto, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is only the second woman in history to lead a major American orchestra. Metropolitan Opera

Stillwater, Minnesota native Jack Swanson is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young tenors in the opera world. He has already established himself as one of the leading Rossini specialists of his generation, having sung Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville at Santa Fe Opera; Arena di Verona; and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro; and Prince Ramiro in Cinderella at Norwegian Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Ahead of his Chicago debut in Cinderella, Swanson was named one of WFMT’s 2024 “Artists to Watch.” Praising his debut, Chicago Classical Review said the “dashing” tenor “threw off his...showpiece aria with energetic panache and multiple ringing high Cs.” Swanson makes his Met Opera debut in one of his signature roles, Almaviva, which also marks his debut on the Met’s Saturday broadcast series.
