August 2025

ALSO INSIDE

On WFMT, we close out another season of dazzling performances from the Grant Park Music Festival and, starting on the final afternoon of the month, listen for a weekly series of performances from Ravinia Festival.

From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

As you likely know, in July, the Administration’s rescission bill was signed into law, eliminating funding previously committed to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) over the next two years. CPB distributes this funding to PBS and its member stations. While we are disappointed in this outcome, we are also grateful for the millions of people who voiced their support for public media and stood with PBS and stations across the country. Their actions, and yours, sent a clear message that the work we do matters.

This decision brings with it real challenges to the public media system and to us locally, but it also reminds us of why our work – that is done in partnership with our members and viewers – is so vital. We remain committed to our mission – to produce and present trusted, best-in-class content fueled by a distinctly Chicago sensibility.

And remember, in Chicago we “make no little plans.” We’re not going anywhere!

As the summer begins to wind down, WTTW will bring you your favorite British dramas and mysteries including the Grantchester season 10 finale and new seasons of Professor T, Unforgotten, The Marlow Murder Club, and Astrid on Sunday evenings. On page 4, the two lead actors from Unforgotten, Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar, give us their perspectives on the plot for season 6, how they feel about their characters and their onscreen partnership, and what it’s like to take part in the production of this acclaimed – and gritty – mystery series. WTTW Passport members can watch each of these series in their entirety on the night of the premiere, and Professor T early, on August 10.

On WFMT, we close out another season of live performances from the Grant Park Music Festival with two special live concerts – one featuring a rare Chicago appearance by violin virtuoso Joshua Bell performing Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole under the direction of new music director and principal conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. And on the final afternoon of the month, WFMT commences a weekly series of recorded performances from Ravinia Festival, beginning with pianist Angela Hewitt performing one of the most technically dazzling works in the keyboard repertoire: Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

Thank you for your unwavering support. We're sure you know that your commitment to WTTW and WFMT is more important than ever.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

Q&A

UNFORGOTTEN’S SANJEEV BHASKAR & SINÉAD KEENAN

The critically acclaimed drama series Unforgotten, which explores the emotional depth and complexities of cold case investigations in East London, is back for a sixth season, and so are actors Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan, who portray detectives Sunil “Sunny” Khan and Jessica “Jess” James. As they embark on another season, Sanjeev and Sinéad hint about what’s in store, share updates on their characters, and reflect on the evolution of their onscreen partnership.

SANJEEV

BHASKAR

What sort of response did you get from fans to season five?

Bhaskar : The reactions to season five were incredible! Their opinions of Sinéad’s character

– Jess – changed. At first, they were very much on Sunny’s side, and they gauged how they felt about Jess through Sunny. As Sunny began to warm towards Jess, the audience did as well.

Would you say that Jess and Sunny are proper partners now?

Bhaskar : They’re still getting to know each other, but they have an understanding now and that makes them more of a team. I think Sunny and Jess have built a degree of trust with each other that makes them better partners. Sunny was carrying around a lot of grief last season [after losing his former partner Cassie]. Do you see him starting to move his life forward in season six?

Bhaskar : Sunny is definitely in a better place now, and a little more hopeful. I think he has

rediscovered his enthusiasm for his work environment.

Could you set the scene for the first episode?

Bhaskar: As is traditionally the case, the episode opens with a body that’s been found. This time it’s body parts in a marsh – somebody has spotted something suspicious and called in the police. So it’s quite gruesome in that sense.

Six seasons in, when you are given the scripts, have you gotten any better at working out who the killer is?

Bhaskar: Well, the short answer is no. In terms of reading the scripts, I luxuriate in them – I just read each one like it’s the latest novel from my favorite author. There is so much empathy in the writing – for the investigators, for the

SANJEEV BHASKAR and SINÉAD KEENAN as SUNNY KHAN and JESS JAMES

victims, and also for the perpetrators. That makes for interesting reading, because there are layers there that you encounter as you turn the pages. I go, “It’s him.” “No, it’s her.” “No, it’s them .” I always get it wrong. And that’s one of the joys.

What do you still love about Sunny? What keeps you coming back to that role?

Bhaskar : It’s the layers. I don’t think we knew too much about him in the first three seasons, certainly. The audience was beginning to get to know him, and therefore I was getting to know him, across seasons four, five, and now six. There’s much more now about what he’s thinking and feeling.

SINÉAD KEENAN

What was it like coming back to film Unforgotten season six?

Keenan: It’s such a lovely crew and the same team, so it was great to work with everyone again. It was just a joy to come back to.

Where do we find Jess at the start of this new series, both at home and at work?

Keenan: In terms of Jess’s home life, we’re six months on, or thereabouts. At the end of season five, she found out that her husband Steve had been having an affair with her sister, which is no small thing. But it did look like she was going to stay and work through things. And at the start of this season, it appears that is the case. But obviously, the shadow of infidelity looms large. Steve appears to be trying his best, but then Jess reaches out to her sister and that whole part of her life unravels a little bit further. In terms of work, she and Sunny are working really well together. So, Jess's work life is definitely on a more even keel than her home life at the moment.

Do you feel that Jess and Sunny have a real partnership now?

Keenan: Obviously, they don’t yet have the longstanding partnership that Sunny and Cassie did, but they’ve got their own little groove going now, and I think they genuinely respect and like each other. Hopefully that continues.

Is Jess more comfortable leading the team?

Keenan: The team was grieving and also Jess wasn’t doing a particularly good job, so that added insult to injury from their point of view. But I think now she’s established good working relationships with everyone. Also, they look up to Sunny so much. So they tend to take their lead from him on the whole Jess front.

Has Jess changed since we first met her?

Keenan: I think if somebody throws that grenade into your marriage, you’re going to be changed by it in some way, shape, or form, so certainly, that will have changed Jess’s outlook on relationships, but I don’t think that has stifled her ambition at work at all.

When you first get those scripts, how do they make you feel?

There is so much empathy in the writing –for the investigators, for the victims, and also for the perpetrators.

SANJEEV BHASKAR

Keenan: It’s highly unusual to have all six scripts given to you before you start shooting. You can sit down and read them as a viewer would watch the show. The ups and downs and twists and turns are brilliant. This season’s arc deals with immigration, asylum seekers, social services, and social media, which are all quite timely themes.

What was the most challenging thing you had to face this season?

Keenan: To be honest, the most challenging aspect of this job – and actually, any acting job – is being away from home. That’s always the toughest bit. But it’s the price you pay, which is hopefully worth it.

Did you have a favorite scene or moment?

Keenan: I have to say, everyone was brilliant this year. In those interview scenes, you are up close and personal, watching some brilliant actors do their thing. That was a real pleasure. I was very lucky.

An Anniversary Memoir

Summer 2025 marks 50 years since the loss of one of the most consequential composers in history: Dmitri Shostakovich. To commemorate the occasion, Peter van de Graaff hosts a special twohour exploration of the man and his music, through the eyes of people who knew him and worked with him. Interview moments with artists including Rudolf Barshai, Elisabeth Leonskaya, Mstislav Rostropovich, Kurt Sanderling, Thomas Sanderling, Maxim Shostakovich, and Grigori Spektor – and the voice of Dmitri Shostakovich himself – bring us close to the realities of one of the most profound composers of the modern era. This fascinating journey through Shostakovich’s life also samples a wide range of his music including excerpts from many of his symphonies, his operas The Nose and Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, the Violin Concerto No. 1, the Piano Quintet, and the Piano Trio No. 2.

In the Spotlight

World-renowned violinist Joshua Bell is one of the most celebrated musicians of our time. In a rare appearance with the Grant Park Orchestra — a highlight of Chicago’s outdoor concert season — Bell performs Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. Known for his radiant tone and expressive interpretation, Bell brings a seasoned mastery to Lalo’s virtuosic showpiece, a work that blends French lyricism with Spanish flair. Critics have praised Bell’s past performances of Symphonie Espagnole for their “magnetic energy” and “luminous phrasing,” with The New York Times noting his “effortless command” of the work’s technical and emotional demands. Under the direction of Giancarlo Guerrero, the program opens with Franz von Suppé’s lively and charming Poet and Peasant Overture, and concludes with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy

Elizabeth DeShong

Listening to Singers

One of the most distinguished alumnae of the Ryan Opera Center, mezzo -soprano Elizabeth DeShong’s career has taken her to the world’s leading opera stages including the Met, Covent Garden, La Scala, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. DeShong has been praised as “one of the most intelligent stage performers of her generation” (Opera News) with a voice that spans dramatic mezzo and contralto registers. She is in high demand for bel canto roles such as Arsace in Rossini’s Semiramide, Fidés in Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète, and Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma. These bravura parts have previously been the domain of only the most accomplished virtuosos like Marilyn Horne and the late Ewa Podleś, who coincidentally, were also notable Handelians. DeShong is also acclaimed for her Handel interpretations, including Bradamante in Alcina, a role she toured and recorded with Les Musiciens du Louvre and Marc Minkowski. Elizabeth DeShong joins WFMT to preview her performance in Haymarket Opera’s upcoming concert presentation of Alcina later this month at Ravinia.

Massenet’s Werther

Franco-Swiss tenor Benjamin Bernheim’s meteoric rise has been marked by standout performances across Europe and North America. In 2018, he made his U.S. debut at Lyric Opera in the title role of Gounod’s Faust. The Chicago Tribune described him as “the major French lyric tenor the opera world is longing for.” Bernheim has already been featured in the title roles of two Metropolitan Opera Saturday Matinee radio broadcasts: Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette (in March 2024) and Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (from October 2024). Last summer, he transcended opera stages by performing Fauré’s Hymne d’Apollon at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, earning the affectionate moniker “Le Ténor des JO.” Earlier this spring, Bernheim garnered rave reviews at Théâtre des Champs- Élysées for his portrayal of the title role in Massenet’s Werther Critics hailed his “extraordinary” performance with a voice of “velours” and “intelligence,” calling him “the Werther of reference of today.”

With 28 albums of original and traditional music, Joel Mabus is a longtime fixture on the American folk music scene. He was born into a musical family that played old-time music, bluegrass, and gospel. Often labeled singer-songwriter, he defies the stereotype with a palette that ranges from mountain banjo to jazz guitar, from tender reflection to wicked satire. Fort Wayne, Indianabased Bobcat Opossum is the tuneslinging duo of multi-instrumentalists Sean Hoffman and Ellen Coplin. Drawing inspiration and repertoire from traditional music across several genres including Irish, Americana, bluegrass, classical, and old-time music, they are known for warm, collaborative performances often featuring community singing circles. In advance of their performances at the 49th Annual Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival over Labor Day Weekend, hear sets from these two headliners live in the Levin Studio.

dedicated most of his life to serving God and the Lutheran Church, Johann Sebastian Bach also composed remarkable and enduring secular music, particularly during the five years (1717-1722) he spent working for Prince Leopold. Ravinia Festival 2025

Gramophone Hall of Fame pianist Angela Hewitt celebrates her 50-year career with a performance of one of the most revered works in the keyboard repertoire: Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Built upon a simple yet elegant aria, the work unfolds into 30 variations that display a dazzling array of contrapuntal techniques, dance forms, and virtuosic brilliance. From the buoyant energy of its rapid variations to the profound introspection of its slower movements, the Goldberg Variations is both a technical tour de force and a deeply expressive journey. Recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of Johann Sebastian Bach, this milestone program highlights Hewitt’s lifelong dedication to the composer’s works, particularly the Goldberg Variations—a masterpiece that showcases her exceptional clarity, precision, and depth of interpretation. Recorded in June, this program is the premiere of the series from the 2025 festival season. Upcoming highlights include performances from soprano Ana María Martínez and pianist Kevin Murphy, Apollo’s Fire, the Lincoln Trio, and more.
