In July, WFMT gives you a front row seat to five live outdoor concerts from the Grant Park Music Festival and to the opening night of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s summer residency at Ravinia Festival with Marin Alsop conducting.
From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
We’re always excited to welcome summer to Chicago, and we know the season is in full swing when A Capitol Fourth arrives on the schedule. This year marks the 45th annual live concert special on WTTW, and on page 4, you can learn about the history that preceded it, how and why this concert became a must-see television event, the efforts that go into the production, and about the family who started it all.
Summer is also a time when we prepare food for picnics, backyard barbecues, and other alfresco dining experiences. This month on WTTW in addition to our regular Saturday cooking lineup, we bring you a new profile of an influential Italian chef and English-language cookbook author, Marcella Hazan, who is credited with introducing traditional Italian food preparation techniques to a generation of American home cooks. And The Great American Recipe returns as eight home cooks converge in the barn hoping to impress the judges with their signature dishes. Summer is also a time for road trips, and this month, Alan Carr’s Adventures with Agatha Christie takes you along on a journey to locations that figured heavily in the work of a writer whose life is shrouded in as much mystery as her many popular novels.
Wednesday evenings throughout July, WFMT gives you a front row seat to five live outdoor concerts from the Grant Park Music Festival. Settle in for many unforgettable performances, including Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony and his Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring Scottish virtuoso Steven Osborne; Debussy’s La Mer ; Elgar’s Enigma Variations ; Ravel’s Boléro; Liszt’s Rhapsody Espagnole; and notably, a new work by Mark Adamo that will spotlight the Festival’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence, dynamic cellist Inbal Segev. WFMT will also take you live to the opening night of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s summer residency at Ravinia Festival, with Marin Alsop conducting Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini featuring pianist Bruce Liu, plus Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Carlos Simon’s rousing Amen.
We hope WTTW and WFMT are your companions as you make the most of summer in Chicago this year. Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

A Capitol Fourth 2025

The History Behind A Capitol Fourth
by JULIA MAISH
It’s arguably America’s biggest and splashiest Independence Day celebration – an annual concert special presented live from our nation’s capital that attracts millions of viewers, either watching in person or at home on television. It’s A Capitol Fourth, and this year will mark the 45th celebration.
What you may not know is that this star-spangled annual birthday party wasn’t always shared beyond Washington, D.C., nor was it the dazzling extravaganza we’re used to seeing today.
Concerts at the U.S. Capitol are nothing new. According to Andrew Dentamaro on the Architect of the Capitol site, “one of the longest-standing musical influences in Washington, D.C., is the bands of the U.S. Armed Forces, which have performed concerts on the U.S. Capitol grounds throughout the summer since 1863.” And the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) has been sharing holiday concerts there since 1979.
But the NSO’s first summer concerts were part of an innovative series called the Sunset Symphony Concerts, that came about in a most unusual way. In a story published by Washington’s PBS member station WETA, reporter Emily Robinson explains:
"WHEN THE NSO was founded in 1931, money wasn’t available to finance summer symphony activities, and there wasn’t an outdoor
location large enough to support the Symphony. Furthermore, disputes ensued between the Musicians’ Union and the orchestra directors.
“By 1935 however, the National Symphony Orchestra Association had built a strong following and the orchestra directors pushed the idea of a summer series at their annual sustaining fund drive. After touring a series of National Capital Parks with the Parks superintendent C. Marshal Finnan, the directors decided that, with some out-of-the-box thinking, the Watergate Amphitheatre could be a marvelous location for the summer concerts. The Amphitheatre, which was constructed in 1932 as part of the Arlington Memorial Bridge project, was originally envisioned as a ceremonial entrance to Washington for dignitaries arriving by boat, but it was never used for this purpose.
As The Washington Post noted in 1939: ‘The Watergate, unlike the other distinguished open air music places, was not made for concerts. The stone steps leading formally up from
the Potomac’s shore to the Lincoln Memorial plaza were intended as an official approach by water to the Nation’s Capital. That they have become seating places for thousands of music listeners is purely an incidental, if happy result.’
“With the audience seating issue solved, directors needed a space for the orchestra itself. Space was tight … and so they looked offshore. A temporary band shell, commissioned specifically for the NSO by the National Capital Parks, was installed on the barge early in the summer of 1935, and again according to the Washington Post , ‘transformed [the barge] into something that looked like the quartered inside of a baseball cover, fitted into the side of a soapbox. The sides of the box were moulded and the whole thing, painted white, resembled marble in the moonlight.’
“Washingtonians paying between 25 cents and $1 could be assured a seat right on the steps of the Watergate, while thousands of others lined the water, bridge, and grass to listen for

no charge at all; the advantage of outdoor space provided many who could not afford the time or money to see the symphony during its regular winter season at D.A.R. Constitution Hall with the opportunity to enjoy the music. The audience occasionally even included President Franklin Delano Roosevelt listening from the Presidential Car.’
“In 1965, National Airport started servicing commercial jet planes which created a consistent overhead rumble that was too loud and distracting for the outdoor concert series. It was then that the floating barge saw its last concert with the National Symphony, and the band shell was towed away from its Watergate Amphitheatre location.”
How did this event evolve into the television program A Capitol Fourth? For that, you can thank one family: the Colberts –father Jerry, the creator and longtime producer of the program, and his son Michael who has followed in his footsteps.
According to Ellen N. Woods in a story on the Catholic University Alumni news site (Michael is an alumnus), Jerry Colbert’s story has a Chicago connection. After a year “with a Jesuit mission in Baghdad teaching Iraqi schoolchildren, he married Eileen and together they headed to Chicago’s South Side as lay missionaries with Catholic Extension Volunteers.”
Later, Jerry “earned a master’s degree studying film at Loyola University;” and it was there, as Michael recalled, “that my dad began to understand the awesome power of television – still so new – to effect change, to bring people together.” Later, after a move to Washington, D.C. and a job as media advisor to Congressman Tip O’Neill, Jerry said, “my father heard that they had approached the National Park Service about bringing the concert to the Capitol. And he thought this would be perfect for television.”
for a nationally televised concert. And he told Jerry he wanted him to be the producer.” This was a role that Jerry fulfilled for the rest of his life (for this and The National Memorial Day Concert that he created in 1989). After Jerry passed away in 2017, the baton passed to the perfect successor: Michael, who had been involved in the production since the first concert when he was 13; he has been at the helm ever since.
A Capitol Fourth was designed to share joy, and to unite Americans around this great experiment we call democracy.”
Michael Colbert Executive Producer
Woods continues, “Jerry brought the idea to O’Neill, who rallied bipartisan support
In June 2018, Michael gave an interview to Raymond Arroyo on EWTN’s World Over, revealing to Arroyo that “there was only a day and half of rehearsals, and that [his] chief role behind the scenes for that first special was ‘keeping an eye on the script’ and ‘supplying [his] dad with Diet Cokes.’” He went on to share that the production involves months of preparation by a production staff of more than 500 people (“a family,” Michael proudly says), and that each show, including all the bands and the orchestra, incorporates more than 450 performers. Asked about the biggest challenge in producing A Capitol Fourth each year, Michael laughed and replied, “The weather, the weather, the weather!"
Asked by Arroyo what of his father’s example he takes with him [in producing this show], Michael replied, “My father wanted to give back, to make a difference, and to use this powerful medium of television to make a difference.” As far as why people watch, he explained that “A Capitol Fourth was designed to share joy, and to unite Americans around this great experiment we call democracy… and why not have a party? What’s wrong with that?”
Who are some past guests on A Capitol Fourth? Capital Concerts, Inc., the non-profit producing entity founded by Jerry Colbert, lists “a parade of superstars – including Frankie Valli, Patti LaBelle, John Williams, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, Steve Martin, Josh Groban, Gloria Estefan, Huey Lewis and the News, Little Richard, Tony Bennett, Faith Hill, Ray Charles, the Bee Gees, Kenny G, Aaron Neville, Kenny Rogers and the Muppets from Sesame Street.”
Viewers can watch and stream A Capitol Fourth on WTTW, wttw.com, the PBS app. The special is also available to our troops around the world on the Armed Forces Network.

WFMT Opera Series
Last fall, Turin’s Teatro Regio invited audiences to experience three brand new productions: Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Massenet’s Manon, and Auber’s Manon Lescaut at almost the same time - all three inspired by the novel Histoire du Chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by AntoineFrançois Prévost. Beginning July 12, the WFMT Opera series presents Turin’s “triple Manon” in successive weeks. On July 5, hear Rameau’s ebullient and charming Les fêtes d’Hébé from a recent performance by Les Arts Florissants at L’Opéra Comique in Paris. This celebratory production marked the 80th birthday of William Christie, the founder and artistic director (an American!) of Les Arts Florissants, the pioneering ensemble which has been a leader in the revival of the French Baroque.

Born in Paris to Chinese parents and raised in Montréal, Bruce Liu is First Prize winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Liu’s “playing of breathtaking beauty” (BBC Music Magazine) has secured his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of his generation. Following his recital debut at Symphony Center in June 2024, the Canadian pianist will debut as soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on opening night of CSO’s summer residency at Ravinia. Of his performance of the same concerto with the New York Philharmonic, The New York Times said “[Liu] played with feline agility and lightness of touch. But, as a cat can be lethally powerful when necessary, he can also take on a muscularity that turns sensitive phrasing into tintinnabular resonance.”

Named a 2024 Chicagoan of the Year in Classical Music by the Chicago Tribune, among Okpebholo’s credits are having had his works presented by Chicago Opera Theater and Chicago Symphony Orchestra MusicNOW. Folkstage
Singer-songwriter Joy Clark honed her guitar chops and stage presence in her parents’ church, leading worship services with her siblings in Harvey, Louisiana. Studying at the University of New Orleans, Joy soaked up the city’s traditions – most notably its “do whatcha wanna” attitude, a far cry from her religious home. Her newfound community of queer folks, poets, artists, activists, and people living authentically, combined with her social science studies, brought Joy closer to the self she was still defining. In her debut album Tell it to the Wind, she blends the social consciousness of folk, the rhythms of Southeast Louisiana, and the soul-centered music she grew up with. Joy Clark and Guatemalan singer-songwriter Mercedes Escobar perform live in the Levin Studio in advance of their performance at the 40th Annual Woodstock Folk Festival.

Listening to Singers
Amanda Forsythe is a rare soprano who was recently showcased by Music of the Baroque and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in solo aria performances – arias for their own sake, rather than in the context of a complete work. In both cases, the music was by Handel, the composer with whom Forsythe is most often associated and rightfully celebrated. Of her CSO performance, Chicago Classical Review said, “Forsythe displayed winsome charm, pinpoint accuracy, and coloratura flair.” In addition to her solo album of Handel arias with Apollo’s Fire, The Power of Love, she has also recorded roles in two complete Handel operas: Orlando with Pacific Baroque Orchestra and Almira with Boston Early Music Festival. Amanda Forsythe joins WFMT to share her newest recording Handel: Italian Cantatas & Arias with the ensemble Opera Prima, which was released earlier this month.
