The second event at the Misano World Circuit will be remembered as the “first time” for many reasons: Leonardo Fornaroli and Iron Lynx achieved their first victory in the Italian championship in race 1; Hamda Al Qubaisi of Prema Powerteam was the first girl to win a place on the absolute podium, always in race 1; Oliver Bearman of Van Amersfoort Racing is, for the first time in his career and thanks also to his success in race 2, at the top of the drivers’ rankings; finally, Leonardo Bizzotto achieved his first victory among the rookies with BVM Racing in race 2. All this shows that, once again, the ACI Sport series, with the support of the WSK Promotion team, manages to surprise others and itself every weekend, with the young talented protagonists of the class thirsting to achieve new records and goals. And this is what is great about the school called the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, able to offer continuous improvement for those aiming to reach the top in international motorsport: Formula 1. For the moment, let’s enjoy the emotions that these drivers will certainly have to offer also in this third round at the Vallelunga circuit. Have fun!

Buon divertimento!

Hamda Al Qubaisi Prema Powerteam

First career success for Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth during race 1. The Italian driver started well from pole position, acquired after the five-position penalty inflicted on Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) for a contact with Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) at Le Castellet, and tried to impose his own pace on the race, followed by Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing). Towards the middle of the race, Fornaroli began to gain ground on Bearman and finished triumphantly under the chequered flag 1.795 seconds ahead of the British driver. Meanwhile, Hamda Al Qubaisi (Prema Powerteam) built on the excellent results of the qualifiers with a dash that took her to third place. The girl from the United Arab Emirates defended herself well from Bedrin’s attacks and achieved the lowest step of the podium: this is the first “female quota” on the absolute podium of the Italian championship. Jonas Ried (BWT Mücke Motorsport) overtook Bedrin in the final laps and took fourth place in addition to victory among the rookies. Sebastián Montoya (Prema Powerteam) stalled at the start, but recovered up to sixth place, while Smal made the same mistake and grabbed ninth place. 15

Victor Bernier R-ace GP

An amazing test of maturity for Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) in the second race of the Misano weekend. Starting from pole position achieved in Friday’s qualifiers, the British driver stayed in first place from the start to the chequered flag, without weakening with Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) and Sebastián Montoya (Prema Powerteam) behind him. Montoya was the protagonist of a decisive overtaking on Fornaroli inside the Curvone: once he had reached second place, the Colombian tried to bridge the gap with Bearman, but ended up three tenths of a second behind the British driver, followed in third place by Fornaroli. Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) who finished race 2 in fourth place, while Victor Bernier (R-ace GP) came fifth, ahead of teammate Sami Meguetounif (R-ace GP), who came sixth, and the winner in the rookie class Leonardo Bizzotto (BVM Racing), who came seventh. An excursion into the gravel in the first laps ruined the overall performance of Hamda Al Qubaisi (Prema Powerteam): the girl from the United Arab Emirates still managed to finish the race unscathed.

Leonardo Bizzotto BVM Racing

Once again it was Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) who achieved victory at Misano, this time in the final race 3. The British driver was back in pole position and, at the start, took command of the race ahead of Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) and Sebastián Montoya (Prema Powerteam). Fornaroli overtook Bearman on the first lap, but the British driver quickly regained his position and detached himself from the Italian who, in turn, created a gap between him and Montoya. The safety car, on the track a few minutes from the end due to an accident between two cars at the Variante del Parco, compacted all the drivers on the track for a final lap under the green flag. The final “sprint” did not shake Bearman too much, first at the finish line in front of Fornaroli, who came second, and Montoya, third. Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) tried to press teammate Montoya, but finished in fourth place, ahead of Sami Meguetounif (R-ace GP), who came fifth. In tenth place, Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport) achieved success among the rookies.

Sami Meguetounif R-ace GP

Just 32 kilometers from Rome stands the Vallelunga racetrack, established in 1951 by the transformation of a racecourse. In 2004, the circuit was extended to its current length of 4,085 metres to be, over time, also used for some private tests of the main Formula 1 teams. However, in 2019 it hosted the first edition of the FIA Motorsport Games which also included the F4 Cup. It is dedicated to Piero Taruffi, a former Formula 1 driver of the 1950s with Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati and Vanwall and, furthermore, the track’s design engineer.

FOCUS: 2021 TEAMS

WHO ARE THE TEAMS IN THE 2021 SEASON Our focus on the teams at the start of the 2021 season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth continues with the second episode, after the debut in the last issue of the Misano Adriatico magazine, always in strict alphabetical order.

BWT MÜCKE MOTORSPORT At the behest of Peter Mücke, Mücke Motorsport was established in 1998 to compete in the German Formula BMW. The team also started in the following years in Formula 3 (in Germany and in the Euro Series), DTM, GP3 Series and in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. Markus Winkelhock, Christian Klien and four-time Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel stand out among the many former drivers. For the 2021 season of the Italian championship, the German team has confirmed Joshua Dürksen in its line-up: he has already won two races in 2019 and 2020. The licensed driver from Paraguay is joined, this year, by the Mexican Erick Zúñiga and by the German Jonas Ried.

12

CRAM MOTORSPORT

Cram Competition took its first steps in 1991 in Erba, in the province of Como, thanks to the founder Marcello Rosei. In its over twenty-years of history, the Italian team has participated in numerous preparatory formulas and trains future stars of tomorrow such as Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan, Felipe Massa and Pastor Maldonado. With the new name of Cram Motorsport chosen in 2012, the team, led by the founder’s sons, Simone and Gabriele Rosei, has been participating in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth since 2016. Nicolás Baptiste participated in the first two rounds of the 2021 season with the team, while Vittorio Catino and Suleiman Zanfari only took to the track at Le Castellet.

DR FORMULA RP MOTORSPORT drformularacing.com

From its previous experience as Malta Formula Racing, DR Formula was formed with the aim of participating in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. The Portuguese team brings together under the same box people with extensive experience in motor sports (starting with the founder Danilo Rossi, 5 times world karting champion) and went into partnership with RP Motorsport, an Italian company (based on an idea of Fabio Pampado, Francesco and Carlo Roscio as well as Graziano Rocca) winner for many years of the Euroformula Open and also a participant in the United States of America in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship. After a brief appearance at last year’s final round in Vallelunga, Pedro Perino is working full-time in the 2021 season of the Italian championship with DR Formula RP Motorsport.

FOCUS & ENTRY LIST

F4 DRIVERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? If the first edition of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth dated 2014 started the career in motorsport of some young talent, the 2015 championship continued with the same “mission” by considerably increasing the number of registered drivers and nationalities represented. Guanyu Zhou was one of the main protagonists for the title fight that year and achieved three wins and second place in the overall rankings. The Chinese driver continued his journey with three years in European Formula 3 between 2016 and 2018, winning on the Pau circuit. Since 2019 he has been on the starting grid of Formula 2 and in 2021 (at the time of going to press) he is championship leader. Zhou is currently also Alpine’s reserve driver in Formula 1. Robert Shwartzman came third at the end of the championship and, in 2018, came third in the European F3. The following year, however, the Russian was

Robert Shwartzman

champion of the new F3. With four wins and a fourth place finish in 2020, Shwartzman was back at the start of F2 and confirmed as a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Scrolling through the 2015 season rankings of the “F4 tricolor”, in fourth place we find David Beckmann (who momentarily raced in Formula 2 after five years of activity between Formula 3 and GP3 Series) and, in 11th Lando Norris: the current McLaren official driver in Formula 1 participated in three out of seven events and was once on the podium. Last, but not least, there is the champion Ralf Aron: the young Estonian currently holds the role of Prema Powerteam Team Manager.

14

@virtuosiracing

Guanyu Zhou
