WSK Open Series, Rd. 4 2023 | Sarno

The Open Series is on the eve of the last seasonal event, in Sarno, and is ready to give us more challenges and, as if that were not enough, interesting new outcomes. First of all, the champions of the KZ2, MINI Gr.3 and MINI Gr.3 U10 classes will be decided, to be added to those of the X30 Senior and X30 Junior already completed at the previous stage in Castelletto di Branduzzo. The competition is still far from over and, to prove it, there is a long list of pretenders to the “throne”. But that’s not all, because the new OKN and OKN-J single-speed classes, introduced by FIA Karting to simplify and gradually make access to top karting, which as far as Direct Drive karts are concerned, is represented by the OK and OKJ classes, well known to us, will make their debut in a WSK Promotion event. However, the 2023 WSK Promotion season will not end here: after a short summer break, in September there will be a return to the track for the highly anticipated Euro Series, scheduled over two rounds, while in November it will be the turn of the Final Cup, also over two rounds, to celebrate international karting in style.

L’Open Series è alla vigilia dell’ultimo appuntamento stagionale, a Sarno, ed è pronta a regalarci ulteriori sfide e, come se non bastasse, interessanti novità. Innanzitutto, verranno eletti i campioni delle classi KZ2, MINI Gr.3 e MINI Gr.3 U10, che andranno ad aggiungersi a quelli della X30 Senior e X30 Junior già celebrati in occasione della precedente tappa di Castelletto di Branduzzo. I giochi sono ben più che aperti e, a dimostrarlo, è la lunga lista dei pretendenti “al trono”. Ma non è tutto, perché faranno il loro debutto in una manifestazione firmata WSK Promotion le nuove categorie monomarcia OKN e OKN-J, introdotte da FIA Karting per semplificare e rendere graduale l’accesso al karting di vertice, che per quanto riguarda i kart Direct Drive è rappresentato dalle classi OK e OKJ, a noi ben note. Tuttavia, non si chiuderà qui la stagione 2023 targata WSK Promotion: dopo una breve pausa estiva, a settembre si tornerà in pista per l’attesissima Euro Series, in programma su due round, mentre a novembre sarà la volta della Final Cup, anch’essa su due prove, per celebrare in grande stile il karting internazionale.

MASTERFUL WORK BY CARENINI

CARENINI

After the Champions Cup title achieved last year in OK, Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/Iame) expanded his trophy cabinet with the Open Series, in the X30 Senior class. The Italian opened the championship immediately with a pole position in the first round in Lonato del Garda and continued with two victories and a second place in the qualifying heats, a second place in the prefinal and a final fully dominated from the start. However, despite the best time in the qualifying practice, in the second round of Cremona came a false move due to a withdrawal in the final on Sunday afternoon. The Energy Corse driver changed strategy for the Castelletto di Branduzzo stage and decided to remain “in the shadows” with a fifth place in the qualifying practice, followed by three podiums in the subsequent eliminatory heats. In the final, Carenini battled with Federico Albanese (Italcorse/ Iame) and Nando Weixelbaumer (Redspeed/Iame), but in the end the race was won by the Italcorse Racing Team driver. Coming second, Carenini celebrated his success in the championship, ahead of Weixelbaumer, who came second, and Andy Ratel (KR/Iame), who came third.

Dopo il titolo Champions Cup ottenuto lo scorso anno in OK, Danny Carenini (Energy Corse/Iame) amplia la propria bacheca di trofei con la Open Series, nella categoria X30 Senior. L’italiano inaugura il campionato subito con una pole position nel primo round di Lonato del Garda e prosegue con due vittorie e un secondo posto nelle qualifying heat, una piazza d’onore in prefinale e una finale pienamente dominata fin dalla partenza. Tuttavia, nonostante il miglior tempo in qualifica, nel secondo appuntamento di Cremona arriva un passo falso a causa di un ritiro nella finale di domenica pomeriggio. Il pilota Energy Corse cambia strategia per la tappa di Castelletto di Branduzzo e decide di rimanere “nell’ombra” con un quinto posto nelle prove cronometrate, seguito da tre podi nelle successive manche eliminatorie. A very lively final for the assignment of the X30 Junior title. The opening stage in Lonato del Garda saw Rocco Coronel (Redspeed/Iame) in pole position, but he lost his primacy to his opponents in the qualifying heats. The Dutchman re-emerged in Sunday’s final, winning after a thrilling duel with Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame). The second round in Cremona, instead saw Coronel close the weekend in second place, behind the winner Filippo Pancotti (Tony Kart/Iame) and in front of his direct rival Kuzhnini, in contention until the last for first place and forced to go off-track following a contact with another participant. In fact, Castelletto di Branduzzo was the last chance for Kuzhnini to beat Coronel: the Swiss driver was ahead of everyone in the qualifying practice but at the end of the qualifying heats he found himself behind the Dutchman in the intermediate rankings; however, the situation changed again in the prefinal, with Kuzhnini coming second and Coronel coming sixth. The final repeated the challenge of the first round between Coronel and Kuzhnini: the Victory Lane driver was leading just a few bends from the end, but the Team Driver Racing Kart driver rear-ended him, forcing him to withdraw. Riccardo Ferrari (Tony Kart/Iame) won the race, while Kuzhnini came fifth following a series of penalties, but was still able to lift the trophy reserved for the champion.

La tappa d’apertura di Lonato del Garda vede Rocco Coronel (Redspeed/Iame) in pole position che nelle qualifying heat cede il primato ai propri avversari. L’olandese riemerge nella finale di domenica, vinta dopo un avvincente duello con Tiziano Kuzhnini (Tony Kart/Iame). Il secondo round di Cremona, invece, vede Coronel chiudere il weekend con la conquista della piazza d’onore, alle spalle del vincitore Filippo Pancotti (Tony Kart/Iame) e davanti al suo rivale diretto Kuzhnini, in lizza fino all’ultimo per il primo posto e costretto a un fuori pista in seguito a un contatto con un altro partecipante. Di fatto, Castelletto di Branduzzo è l’ultima chance utile a Kuzhnini per battere Coronel: in qualifica, lo svizzero precede tutti, però al termine delle manche eliminatorie si ritrova dietro all’olandese nella classifica intermedia; ma la situazione cambia di nuovo in prefinale, con Kuzhnini secondo e Coronel sesto. La finale ripropone la sfida del primo round tra Coronel e Kuzhnini: il pilota Victory Lane è in testa a poche curve dal termine, ma il portacolori Team Driver Racing Kart lo tampona costringendolo al ritiro. Iskender Zulfikari’s (Parolin/Iame) winning streak in the WSK championships continued. The Turkish driver was one of the favourites at the weekend in La Conca and confirmed the expectations already starting from the qualifying practice, with the best time of 52.170 seconds in group 1 and first place overall in the rankings. Zulfikari was also very fast in the following qualifying heats, where he achieved two victories, a second place and a fastest lap, to continue his journey with another win in the prefinal A on Saturday morning. The Babyrace Driver Academy driver, was therefore in pole position on the starting grid and, once again, left no room for his opponents: already at the end of the second lap he was over a second ahead of his closest pursuer and, with perfect race management, crossed the finish line first. This was Zulfikari’s fifth trophy: after winning the Open Cup, Final Cup (both in 2022), the Champions Cup and the Super Master Series (in 2023).

Zulfikari è velocissimo anche nel corso delle successive qualifying heat, dove totalizza due vittorie, un secondo posto e un giro veloce, per proseguire il proprio percorso con un ulteriore successo nella prefinale A di sabato mattina. Il pilota Babyrace Driver Academy, dunque, si presenta in pole position sulla griglia di partenza e, ancora una volta, non lascia spazio agli avversari: già al termine del secondo giro ha oltre un secondo di vantaggio sul più diretto inseguitore e, con una gestione perfetta della corsa, taglia per primo il traguardo finale. Si tratta del quinto trofeo per Zulfikari: dopo aver vinto l’Open Cup, Final Cup (entrambe nel 2022), la Champions Cup e la Super Master Series (nel 2023).

ESKANDARI-MARANDI’S FIRST VICTORY

SEBASTIAN ESKANDARI-MARANDI

The class reserved for the Under 10s ended with the first triumph of Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi (Tony Kart/Vortex). The Australian was immediately one of the protagonists at the weekend with a third place in Group 1 of the qualifying practice, which placed him fifth in the combined rankings, and continued his journey in the qualifying heat with a victory, two podiums and three fastest laps. Thanks to these results, the Tony Kart Racing Team driver leapt to the top of the intermediate rankings and confirmed his leadership also in the prefinal A on Saturday morning, where he achieved a solid success. From pole position, in the decisive final he immediately took the lead on the first laps but found a valid rival in Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame). EskandariMarandi stayed in the wake of the Pole, also because the latter was given a 3-second penalty from the stewards during the race. The two finished the race separated by almost a tenth of a second, but the winner’s trophy went to Eskandari-Marandi.

La categoria riservata agli Under 10 regala il primo trionfo di Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi (Tony Kart/ Vortex). L’australiano è subito uno dei protagonisti del fine settimana con il terzo posto nel gruppo 1 delle qualifiche, che lo posiziona quinto nella classifica combinata, e prosegue il proprio cammino nelle qualifying heat con un bottino di una vittoria, due podi e ben tre giri veloci. Grazie a questi risultati, il pilota Tony Kart Racing Team balza in testa alla classifica intermedia e conferma la propria leadership anche nella prefinale A di sabato mattina, dove ottiene un solido successo. Dalla pole position, nella decisiva finale prende subito il comando delle operazioni nei primi giri, ma trova in Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame) un valido rivale. Eskandari-Marandi rimane in scia al polacco, anche perché quest’ultimo riceve nel corso della gara una penalità di 3 secondi dai commissari sportivi. I due terminano la prova separati da quasi un decimo di secondo, ma il trofeo del vincitore va nelle mani di Eskandari-Marandi.

The victory of Bosco Arias Chavarri (KR/Iame) in the third round of the season was not entirely obvious. In fact, the Spaniard started the weekend with an 11th place in Friday’s qualifying practice, which instead saw Iskender Zulfikari (Parolin/Iame) at the top. Arias Chavarri found excellent forward momentum in the subsequent qualifying heats where, among other things, he won and gained third place in the intermediate rankings, behind the new leader Keelan Harvick (Parolin/Iame) and Bogdan Cosma Cristofor (KR/Iame). Even after the prefinals on Sunday morning, it was clear to everyone that the final would be a matter reserved for these three drivers, which is exactly what happened: Cosma Cristofor led the race on the first laps, after which Harvick took the lead for just one lap, before being overtaken by Arias Chavarri. Noah Baglin (KR/Iame) also joined the battle, but on the penultimate lap he came into contact with Cosma Cristofor and ended up off the track: this favoured the escape of Arias Chavarri, first under the chequered flag ahead of both Harvick, who came second, and Cosma Cristofor, who came third.

Anche dopo le prefinali di domenica mattina, è chiaro a tutti che la finale sarà un affare riservato a questi tre piloti e così accade: Cosma Cristofor guida la gara nei primi giri, dopodiché Harvick prende il comando per appena una tornata, prima di essere infilato da Arias Chavarri. Nella battaglia s’inserisce anche Noah Baglin (KR/Iame), ma al penultimo giro entra in contatto con Cosma Cristofor e finisce fuori pista: questo favorisce la fuga di Arias Chavarri, primo sotto la bandiera a scacchi davanti sia ad Harvick, secondo, sia a Cosma Cristofor,

A first success in a WSK competition for Leonardo Gorski (Parolin/Iame). The Pole was immediately one of the protagonists in his class, with a third place in the qualifying practice behind poleman Oleksandr Legenkyi (KR/Iame) and John Han (Parolin/TM). The three eliminatory heats rewarded Gorski’s consistency in terms of results (he managed one win, a second and a fourth place) which launched him at the top of the rankings, a position later confirmed with a victory in the prefinal. In the final, Gorski found Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi (Tony Kart/Vortex) as his main rival on the track but defended himself very well from the Australian until, on the penultimate lap, Eskandari-Marandi came into contact with Albert Tamm (Parolin/Iame), in third place at that moment, and lost several positions. Gorski was thankful and flew straight to victory, escorted to the finish line by Niccolò Perico (Energy Corse/TM). Michele Orlando (IPK/TM) finished third, ahead of Legenkyi, who came fourth, and Eskandari-Marandi, who came fifth.

Finché, al penultimo giro, Eskandari-Marandi entra in contatto con Albert Tamm (Parolin/Iame), in quel momento terzo, e perde diverse posizioni. Gorski ringrazia e vola dritto verso la vittoria, scortato sul traguardo da Niccolò Perico (Energy Corse/TM). Michele Orlando (IPK/TM) chiude al terzo posto, davanti a Legenkyi, quarto, e a Eskandari-Marandi, quinto.

SENNA VAN WALSTIJN

The inaugural stage of Lonato del Garda immediately saw Senna Van Walstijn (Sodikart/TM) among the main protagonists of the weekend. The Dutchman stood out in Friday’s qualifying practice but dropped to third place at the end of the qualifying heats. On Sunday, the Sodikart driver won his prefinal and beat the competition in the final as well. Van Walstijn did not take part in the Cremona event.

STAN PEX

After missing the first round of Lonato del Garda, Stan Pex (KR/TM) joined the start of the second round in Cremona and was immediately the man to beat. In fact, the Dutchman achieved pole position in the qualifying practice and continued with two victories in the qualifying heats and success in the prefinal. He was also successful in the final on Sunday, with the SP Motorsport driver first under the chequered flag.

Dopo aver saltato il primo round di Lonato del Garda, Stan Pex (KR/TM) si presenta al via del secondo appuntamento di Cremona e si candida fin da subito come l’uomo da battere. Infatti, l’olandese firma la pole position in qualifica e prosegue con due vittorie nelle qualifying heat e il successo nella prefinale. Non ci sono storie nemmeno nella finalissima di domenica, con il pilota SP Motorsport primo sotto la bandiera a scacchi.

Pex’s main rival in Cremona, Alessandro Minetto (Parolin/TM) started with a third place in the qualifying practice and came second twice in the qualifying heats, as well as another second place in the prefinal. The Italian failed to put a spoke in Pex’s wheels and finished second, in any case achieving third place in the championship.

La tappa inaugurale di Lonato del Garda vede fin da subito Senna Van Walstijn (Sodikart/TM) tra i principali protagonisti del weekend. L’olandese svetta nelle prove cronometrate di venerdì, ma scende in terza posizione al termine delle qualifying heat. Alla domenica, il pilota Sodikart vince la propria prefinale e batte la concorrenza anche nella finale. Van Walstijn non prende invece parte all’appuntamento di Cremona.

Principale rivale di Pex a Cremona, Alessandro Minetto (Parolin/TM) parte con un terzo posto in qualifica e colleziona due secondi posti nelle manche eliminatorie, oltre a un’ulteriore piazza d’onore in prefinale. Among the protagonists of the Lonato del Garda round, Paolo Ippolito (KR/Iame) stood out. He was second in the qualifying practice behind the poleman Van Walstijn. The Italian won twice in the qualifying heats and raised the bar with an important success in the prefinal. However, in the decisive final, he finished second by a difference of 0.219 seconds from the winner.

Tra i protagonisti del round di Lonato del Garda spicca Paolo Ippolito (KR/Iame), secondo in qualifica dietro al poleman Van Walstijn. L’italiano coglie un bottino di due vittorie nelle qualifying heat e alza l’asticella con un importante successo in prefinale. Tuttavia, nella decisiva finale, termina secondo per una differenza di 0.219 secondi dal vincitore.

Third place for Danilo Albanese (KR/Iame) in the qualifying practice in Lonato del Garda, able to achieve three second places in the following qualifying heats. After another second position in the prefinal, the Italian finished the weekend on the lowest step of the podium, behind Van Walstijn and Ippolito.

Difficult start to the championship for Lukas Scherbinskas (Sodikart/TM) in Lonato del Garda, 17th at the end of the final. The German relaunched himself in the following round in Cremona, where he reached the lowest step of the podium in the prefinal and a fifth place in the final.
