Sowerby Bridge boosted to superfast speeds! Thanks to Superfast West Yorkshire, much of our area is set to benefit from superfast fibre broadband speeds. It’s all part of ‘Superfast Britain’, a Government programme of investment in broadband and communication infrastructure across the UK with £780m allocated to extend superfast broadband to 95% of the UK by 2017. Eighteen fibre cabinets have now been installed in Sowerby Bridge enabling around 5,500 homes and business to access the new technology. Further upgrades will follow in the coming months benefitting a further 980 premises.

Our town is the latest in a number of areas to be upgraded to superfast broadband as part of the multi million pound project rolling out across West Yorkshire. The Superfast West Yorkshire project has already passed the half way mark with over 40,000 properties and businesses passed to date. The project is due to complete by the end of September 2015. Superfast West Yorkshire builds on BT’s commercial investment of £2.5 billion to rollout fibre broadband to two-thirds of UK premises.

The arrival of faster broadband brings many benefits to the community. With faster upload and download speeds, it makes having the whole household online, staying connected, shopping, paying bills and streaming TV even easier. Businesses can benefit too – whether it is the security of having reliable internet to work from home or the ability to compete in a global marketplace.

For more information about the project and to find out when superfast broadband will be delivered to your area, visit www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk. To be upgraded to superfast broadband you need to speak to your broadband provider, as you will not be automatically upgraded. Sowerby Bridge residents can find out more about prices and deals available at www.get-fibre.co.uk

On average, Sowerby Bridge customers could see speed increases of between 26 to 32 mbps with a fibre connection when compared to standard broadband, although these speeds will vary for each individual property.

You can follow us on Twitter and Facebook: @SuperfastWY and facebook.com/SuperfastWY For updates in the Calderdale area: @CalderdaleGoOn and facebook.com/ SuperfastCalderdale

The Tour de Yorkshire and

Ripponden Gala Sunday May 3rd After the excitement of Le Tour de France coming through our area the cycling bug really seems to have stayed with the Tour de Yorkshire cycling event hitting our streets.

easy walking and cycling route between Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge on the old railway line. See more about their progress at www.ryburnvalleygreenway. com and for dates of their next meetings.

This is the first ever route of the Tour de Yorkshire with Stage 1 starting in Bridlington and finishing in Scarborough on Friday May 1st. Stage 2, on the following day, runs from Selby to York.

Ripponden May Gala To help families make an afternoon of it the 21st Ripponden May Day Gala has been moved from it’s usual Monday slot to Sunday 3rd May to coincide with the Tour de Yorkshire event. As always there will be plenty to do, see and enjoy on the day. The gala is situated at Millfold Recreation park off Elland Road, Ripponden and starts at 11am and runs till tea-time. There will be stalls and attractions, donkey rides, train ride, hot dogs, ice cream van. The plan is to hire a large screen to show the race and a family film in the late afternoon.

Our area is covered in Stage 3 on Sunday 3rd May. The peloton will make a return to some of the roads raced in the 2014 Yorkshire Grand Départ of the Tour de France, only with a twist… Starting in Wakefield, riders will travel south to Barnsley before heading to Holmfirth where they pick up the Grand Départ route in reverse, racing from Slaithwaite via Scammonden and Barkisland to Ripponden before riding down the iconic Cragg Vale. The riders will then make their way to Hebden Bridge, Oxenhope and through the famous cobbled streets of Haworth before racing on to the finish line in Roundhay Park in Leeds. The first cyclists will be arriving in Slaithwaite at 1.45pm, in Barkisland around 2pm with the final ones leaving Ripponden by 2.30pm. As an event it will be shown live on TV in the UK and Europe.

Stones Methodists Family Fun Day Alternatively you could choose to take in the Le Tour Yorkshire event at Stones Methodist Church, Rochdale Rd, Ripponden who are holding a ‘Family Fun Day’ with free admission and catering from 11.30am, play areas and activities before the riders pass on their way up from Ripponden.

Sir Bradley Wiggins has confirmed his intention to ride in the inaugural race, the 2012 Tour de France winner will leave Team Sky at the end of April and lead his own Team Wiggins developmental squad. The 34 year old missed last year’s Tour de France having been overlooked for the squad by Team Sky. The legacy from the TDF is still being felt and hopefully the Tour de Yorkshire could be one of those legacies and an annual event. More information on the race can be found online at www.letour.yorkshire.com. In addition, a local community group is working to establish a further legacy, one that local people and tourists alike could appreciate every day. Ryburn Valley Greenway is working to establish a safe and

Harella Clothing By Jean Illingowrth

My latest project writing about Harella the clothing manufacturers where I worked during the “Swinging Sixties” is almost completed. From 1941 the firm was situated in Croftmyl at the junction of Savile Park Road and West Parade in Halifax. During the 60s it became the second largest exporter of ladies fashion garments in the United Kingdom. My book called, “It’s a dream --- it’s Harella” (the firm’s slogan) contains a potted history of the firm’s origins and the three Jewish Leaman brothers connected to the business set up in Islington, London during 1919 by Lew Harris their uncle.

to name a few. Tickets were much sought after by the public and ex-employees. Everyone made a special effort and dressed up for the occasion. The photographic content will I hope stir memories for many local people. Harella was a major employer in Halifax; workers received gold watches for twenty years service to the firm. Many employees met their life partners at Croftmyl and most recall happy times of working there. The Harella sales held at the factory were well attended by the general public. The queues were long and folk were let in so many at a time. Ladies were eager to search through rails of clothing for sale on display in the basement. Members of staff acted as volunteers helping with finding sizes, styles and taking cash. Coats, suits, unlined suits, trouser suits, skirts and other items were available, with bargain price tickets for the end of line or slightly cloth damaged garments. At £12 for a tweed winter coat with a real fur collar, a suit for £9 and a skirt for £7, these were smart fashion bargains in quality cloths and design.

Ivy Hinchliffe – Wears a Harella dress & Jacket - 1973. Interviews with former workers at Harella cover stages of a garments production from design to dispatch. The firm was unique in employing models in varying sizes to try on the finished clothing to be inspected and “passed” by Betty Woffenden the head passer. I joined the firm as a model in 1962 and remained there until 1969. Friendships have stood the test of time and I still keep in touch with my ex-model friends, the book also relates their memories. Harella dances were held at the Victoria Hall (now the Victoria Theatre) and always had top bands appearing, Ted Heath, Joe Loss and Ken Mackintosh

Through the Go Local I am appealing to ladies who still have any Harella garment that I could borrow to put on display at my book launch. Many items have been sent to charity shops over the years, now sought after as “Vintage fashion”. The garment requires the Harella label sewn into the back of the neck or on the inner side of the left facing. My book will go on sale at Harvey’s store in Halifax, The Book Case in Hebden Bridge and Trinkette in Sowerby Bridge. My contact details are -Tel – 01422 – 833789 or e-mail jean.illingworth@mypostoffice.co.uk

Recipe - An easy chocolate Easter cake! Ingredients

150g unsalted butter (room temp) 150g light muscovado sugar 40g cocoa 150g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 2 medium eggs 1tsp vanilla extract 140ml soured cream 2tbsp golden syrup For the chocolate ganache: 250ml double cream 250g dark chocolate such as Bournville To decorate: 1 chocolate flake, crumbled, 120g tub mini eggs

Method

Heat oven to 180°C. Grease and line two 7â€? sandwich tins. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until pale.

In a separate bowl, seive the cocoa powder, flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt. Mix well then add the butter /sugar mixture. In a jug, whisk the eggs with vanilla, soured cream and syrup. Pour over the dry ingredients and beat together. Divide the mixture between the tins. Bake for 20-25 mins, leave to cool for a few mins, then transfer to racks. For the ganache, melt the chocolate in a bowl over barely simmering water, add the cream and mix briefly. Remove from the heat and allow to cool until thick enough to spread (around 45mins). Use slightly less than half to sandwich the cakes together. Spread remaining ganache over the cake, then decorate with flakes and mini eggs. Store in the fridge in an air tight container.

Is your ‘healthy’

Is your healthy food healthy? food really healthy? Unfortunately these days it’s not always easy to navigate your way around the supermarket shelves in search of healthy options... Despite the latest attempts to simplify the whole process. Colour coded packaging, healthy ranges etc... The list goes on. Perhaps one of the biggest problems we face as consumers are the misleading claims, images or innuendo on packaging the manufacturers use to reel us in. Healthy Living, Feel Fuller For Longer, Go Ahead, Good For You... are just a few examples of heavily branded products that we are being conditioned in to thinking are actually good for us, regardless of whether they actually are or not!!

the foods that you eat at a deeper level that simply a quick scan of the claims that are made on the front of the product packaging.

If you reach for any of these types of foods, especially ready made meals in the false hope of getting a good healthy and nutritious food, then I am afraid that you may be disappointed more often than not.

Low in sugars - 5 grams or less per 100 grams

This isn’t to say that all of these foods are unhealthy or that you shouldn’t eat them, I am simply saying that it is important that you don’t simply trust the makers of them to tell you how good they are for you! Making the mistake of trusting manufacturers to give us healthy food is something that we have been doing for years. But we often forget why these companies exist... To make money!! The cheaper they can make their products, then the more profit they make which all too often means adding cheaper filler ingredients such as fats, sugars and salt. As a happy coincidence for producers, all of these additives actually enhance the taste and texture of the foods they’re in.

You need to actually read the label and ingredients lists and make sure that the foods you choose are...

Low in fat - 3 grams or less per 100 grams Low in salt - 1 gram or less per 100 grams Be wary of sugars being broken down in to other forms of sugar on the label such as sucrose, glucose, corn syrup, fructose etc. - these are all types of sugars and in excess are not good for you. For a typical meal you should be aiming for a total calorie intake of around 300 - 500 kcals based on 3 meals a day for a typical adult Try to steer clear of ready made convenience meals as these are usually as bad as it gets. To your health and fitness Jago

I am not writing this in attempt to be in any way political or to suggest that all of these foods should be avoided, I am simply telling you to be aware of

Deadline for Dec notices Mon 10th Nov - by email please

Phoenix Heights – art for the community Phoenix Heights is a voluntary group based in Sowerby Bridge. It was founded in 2010 in order to give local people an affordable solution to their artistic quests and needs. ‘Phoenix Heights’ is the area around West Street, Sowerby Bridge where the founders of the group reside. The Group has initially been funded by Calderdale Council from 2011-2014 and then just last month was chosen as the voluntary group to be financially supported by Waitrose Supermarkets through their “Community Matters” programme. Exhibitions of our artwork were displayed at Cup Cakes Café in West Street, throughout 2014. We now have further exhibitions planned there throughout the 2015, so please pop in for a coffee and to have a look! These exhibitions are for those new to art as well as more experienced Artists and for people of all ages and experience. They give an opportunity for artists to be

introduced to the exhibition process and exhibit before an audience.

What’s on?

Craft sessions Thursday afternoons at the cafe from 1-3 pm provide an opportunity for crafts sessions, knitting circles and a social gathering, and, of course, coffee and a cup cake. “Pre Easter Fun” days – Wednesdays 1st and 8th April – for children and parents, activities including Cup cake and Easter egg decorating, face-painting and Easter card making. Dogs and livestock Spring is now in full swing after a Winter that, as usual, felt like it was never going to end. With Spring and sunshine come lambs and wildlife, which are all busy having their offspring and looking after their babies. As days get longer and evenings lighter, many dog owners take advantage of the better weather and set off on longer and more rural walks. Unfortunately, this raises the subject of dog attacks on sheep which is sadly a year round event. The Police receive numerous reports of dog attacks on sheep. Pregnant ewes can abort very easily if upset by dogs. Sheep can also easily die with shock from dog attacks or a dog running around freely in the field. The law requires you to keep your dog under either CLOSE CONTROL or on a LEAD near livestock. If you cannot walk your dog to heel, put it on a lead. I would also suggest you take your dog to training classes if you cannot train your dog to do simple commands. The Police do prosecute owners whose dog has attacked livestock. Owning a dog that is out of control in a public or private place is an offence and you the owner can be prosecuted. Other members of the public should not be put in fear of their safety by your dog being poorly trained and out of control. Remember, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. The law also requires that you do not allow your dog to run free between 01st March and 31st July in areas of sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) or on other areas of moorland. This is to protect breeding wildlife and ground breeding birds. To put it simply, your dog running free in special areas and on other moorland, can destroy birds’ nests and stop them breeding for the future. Simply walk your dog to heal or keep it on a lead. If you are reading this article and you know that you struggle with your dog, please get in touch with a local dog trainer, there are a number of them around. If your dog is well trained it sets a great example to others,

makes your walk so much more enjoyable and keeps you within the law! Also, if you are thinking of getting a dog, do some research on the different breeds available as dogs were all bred for a specific role. DO NOT get a Border Collie unless you are prepared to walk it for several hours a day and train it to a very high standard. Also consider that a mongrel is less likely to have health problems than a pure breed. Consider getting a rescue dog. This dog will most likely come already house trained, making life so much easier! Plus you are giving a dog in need a home. Remember, dogs are like children. Given them an inch and they will take advantage. People like well behaved children and dogs. A happy dog is a tired dog which is also well trained, which in turn gives the owner a happier life. If you wish to contact me about this article, please email me on fiona.igo@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk  Regards from your local officers Fiona Igo and George Serban

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ripponden, Rishworth, Barkisland, Norland, Sowerby, Mill Bank, Soyland & Sowerby Bridge areas & Andy is finding that his

approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
