Eds’ Letter Another bike race is going near us on 3rd May (Le Tour de Yorkshire) but thankfully it will be nowhere near as disruptive as the TdF itself in 2014. Whether you love or loathe our newfound success as a bike race area, one thing seems to be on the up since the TdF in my opinion, and that is community feeling. Whether it’s Mike Smith at Greetland Cricket club raising money for the broken grass cutter and allowing the club to continue or Stainland Cricket being saved from the brink of closure by a small group of determined locals, community feeling seems to be back on our agenda. And now Stainland Bowling Club are joining the movement too, please help them if you can (see P26). These local clubs that we’re fighting for are all small pieces of a la rger jigsaw, and hopefully the pieces will fit together to give a real legacy from the Tour de France which will benefit us all. Wishing you a happy and sunny May!

Happy Birthday Overgate West Vale! The Overgate Hospice charity shop in West Vale is celebrating its first anniversary this month! “It only seems like two minutes ago when we opened the doors for the first time! “ Amanda, manager of the Overgate West Vale shop told us, “The team and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful and generous people who visit the shop and donate their unwanted items. To thanks them and to celebrate our birthday, we are having a special offer just in May where if you buy 2 items you will get the second one at half price. Donations have been amazing and range from a didgeridoo to designer clothing. We cannot thank everyone enough for their support and hope it continues during the next twelve months and beyond.” Overgate Hospice provides a range of patient and family support services from our Inpatient Unit and Day Hospice to Social Work and Counselling. The Overgate Hospice staff philosophy is that although they

know that they cannot add days to life, with your support, their care will add life to the days of their patients, helping people make the most of the time they have left. Overgate Hospice running costs total £3.1 million a year. Of this sum the Calderdale CCG makes a contribution of approximately 20%. The remaining money is raised by the very generous people of Calderdale. This equates to a daily fundraising target of £6900 each and every day. “We do not take this support for granted and sincerely appreciate the support we receive from our local community. We work hard to maintain our running costs and are very careful about making sure our costs are contained.”

Festival time for Elland

Most, if not all, locals know of the Save The Holywell Inn Group and their efforts to purchase the Holywell Inn Public House, which is currently derelict. Fundraising efforts have been amazing and the group is confident that this Summer’s ‘Innovation’ music festival will raise much needed funds for their project. The ‘Summer Acoustic Music Festival’ will run through the weekend of Friday 31st July (from 6pm) to Sunday 2nd August. The event will take place at Brooksbank School and will feature many quality musical performers. The line up for the weekend is not fully confirmed yet and we’ll bring you more information in our July edition, but many accomplished artists will be on stage. Californians, Marc Macisso & Kenny Herrera, are coming over from America especially to kick off the event. Somerset based Julian Dawson (singer, songwriter, guitar and harmonica player) will be playing music from his three albums. Liam Merriman, who toured with Nanci Griffith and received much acclaim for his beautiful album “Three Rivers” will be there. Local superstar Roger Davies has agreed to perform, as has Yorkshire based singer songwriter Peter Stone (seen recently on TV as a busker on Coronation Street!). Iain Matthews, famous for his number one 1970’s hit ‘Woodstock’ was described by Robert Plant best male vocalist he’s ever heard. You can make your own mind up when you see him live at the festival and singing alongside keyboard wizard Edbert Derix. Although there are constant negotiations and work being done to bring in other acts the headline artists for the Saturday night have already been confirmed as Lindisfarne, famous for a number of hits, including ‘The Fog on the Tyne’.

Lindisfarne in the 70s acoustic line up and will no doubt see fans travelling just to witness this performance. As soon as more festival details emerge they’ll be posted on the Facebook page and website. The event will be attended by young and old alike and promises to be a musical feast. However, what really grabbed my attention is something that promises to be a legacy for the local area from the festival and that is the festival workshops allowing locals to develop their own talents guided by the professionals. Current plans include: Song-writing with Clive Gregson; Alternative guitar tuning with Andy Roberts; An introduction to jazz guitar with Mark Griffiths; Saxophone workshop with Marc Macisso; Keyboards with Egbert Derix; Lyric writing with Iain Matthews; Fiddle playing with Tom Leary; Harmonica with Julian Dawson and Event film making with Peter Lassey. There are more workshops being planned too. See www.holywellinn.co.uk for the latest details. Iain Matthews, had a no. 1 hit ‘Woodstock’

On Sunday, the quality remains high as super-group Three Boxes play. You may think you haven’t heard of them but all three Clive Gregson, Andy Roberts and Mark Griffiths feature in Hugh Gregory’s book ‘1000 Great Guitarists’ and it’s easy to see why! Bringing the whole event to a climax are none other than 70’s super-group The Strawbs! This is their

Classic Bike Show rides back into town The Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s Classic Bike & Scooter Show is taking place in Sowerby Bridge on Bank Holiday Sunday, 24th May 2015 between 10.30 and 4pm. The show, which is open to all pre 1980 Bikes & Scooter & includes trophies and Millers Oils ‘goodie bags’ for each class winner with every entrant receiving an enamel souvenir badge. Attractions on the day include a hog roast with other refreshments and new this year is a free all-day indoor cinema showing classic bike & scooter related films. It is also hoped to include some auto jumble, trade and memorabilia stands on site too. The show will be held on the Shire Cruisers Wharf in Sowerby Bridge (HX6 2AG) amongst the restored buildings alongside the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal and river making an ideal setting for a relaxed day out. Pre-registration is advisable as up to 120 classics are expected and space is limited. All details can be found at www.sowerbybridgerotary.org.uk. The event so far has English, Japanese, Italian and German bikes already entered in to the show. Last year the most common manufacturer represented at the show was Norton. There is a lot of press about the new Ducati Scrambler with design elements taken from the original 1960’s bike. You can see an original 1969 Ducati Scrambler at the show as well as a Jawa, a 175cc built in Czechoslovakia in 1959 and still with its original paint, which is a rarity these days. The organisers are

hoping that the star of the show will be a Brough Superior, which is worth almost a quarter of a million pounds! This year the event is also open to scooters with three classes of its own. Whether it’s a Vespa, Lambretta or something completely different, register it in the show and share your pride and joy with others. There are also two ‘best in show’ prizes and a public choice trophy so that all visitors can have a say in which bike or scooter they like best. If you have got a pre 1980 bike or scooter you would like to show, contact 01422 836044. This is the Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge’s main fundraising event of the year; last year’s event raised over £2,500 for local charities. Funds from the show will go to part fund a local public access defibrillator and also other local good causes. The show has the added advantage of giving a bit back to the local community as hopefully many people will enjoy a trip out to visit the show with local shops and cafes receiving a boost to their business too. The event will hopefully become an annual success story putting our local area even more firmly on the national map. As it is on our doorstep, let’s make the most of this opportunity (price £5 adults / £2.50 for under 16s) for a fun day out and see an array of Classics displayed by their proud owners.

It’s all happening at Turbury! To celebrate their 3rd birthday in May, Turbury Equestrian Centre in Greetland have a new look and improved facilities! Turbury are pleased to announce the launch of a new identity and website, which will bring together all areas of the business – horse livery, training and competition facilities and riding school under one umbrella – ‘Turbury Equestrian Centre’. There will also be installation of a new reception facility, primarily for registration and bookings but also as a welcoming ‘hub’, providing up to date news via an electronic noticeboard. An electronic booking system will also be installed to speed up the registration process and ensure all customer details are readily available. And for the first time card payments will be accepted.

And this is only the beginning. There are plans to build more stables over summer to accommodate the Livery in time for next winter. The Events calendar is also filling up, check out www.turburyec.co.uk for more information. The new Outdoor Arena continues to be popular giving more room to ride, dressage movements for 60m tests and more jumps for Show Jumping. And finally, the Cross Country Course is undergoing its annual ‘spring clean’ and will be set out ready to use by mid May. “All these developments and improvements are as a direct result of on-going customer feedback and we hope these exciting developments will make a visit to Turbury even more enjoyable for each and every one of our customers – new and old,”says Dawn Lumb.

Town Hall Dental

The fine art of Six Months Smiles and Dental Sedation What is Six Months Smiles? A smile that’s spoilt by gaps or crooked teeth can make many people feel self-conscious, reserved, or even ashamed of their appearance. There are various solutions to treat crooked teeth but most take at least 18 months if not 2-3 years with conventional orthodontic treatment or clear braces. However the latest in orthodontics, Six Month Smiles ‘invisible braces’ can make a big difference fast. Delivering great results in, just six months, they’re perfect, if you need to get ready for a wedding, start a big new job, or just see that ‘brand new you’ sooner when you stand in front of the mirror. There are no bulky and uncomfortable standard braces to wear for long periods, which is what makes them a great solution for self-conscious teens. Last year I became a 5* Six Month Smiles Mentor and am proud to be one of the only Mentors of this type throughout Calderdale and Kirklees. Can you help everyone achieve the perfect smile? Sometimes just one type of treatment isn’t enough to achieve the smile of your dreams, so we offer complete smile makeovers, which often consist of a blend of different treatments and techniques. A smile makeover can be the perfect solution for a combination of problems such as crooked, uneven or worn down teeth, chipped teeth with old fillings, and discoloured teeth. We’ve treated people of all ages here at Town Hall Dental – it’s never too late to improve your smile. Due to the training that I’ve had with ‘Extreme Makeover’ dentist Dr Rahul Doshi – I feel we’re in a very strong position to give all our clients the best quality advice and treatment proposals. What’s the next stage for anyone interested in a smile makeover? They simply need to make an appointment with the Clinic for a free initial consultation.

What are the benefits of Dental Sedation? Regardless of the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Town Hall Dental – there are just some patients who do still fear a visit to the Dentist. Dr Kam Chana, the New Associate Dentist at Town Hall Dental, answers a few questions about this safe, gentle and effective technique; What experience do you have in the field of Dental Sedation? As well as holding a Diploma in Dental Sedation and I also have over 15 years hands on experience. I’ve carried out over 1,000 Sedations which puts me in a position of real experience enabling me to be a Mentor for other Dentists on Sedation Techniques. I’m also a member of the DSTG (Dental Sedation Teachers Group). How does Dental Sedation work? Many people feel nervous or apprehensive about visiting the Dentist or are even terrified by the thought of having Dental Treatment – so sedation is a fantastic way to solve this issue. Our sedation technique makes patients completely relaxed, very comfortable and largely unaware of the treatment sensations that they are having. If, following your consultation, we discover that you would really benefit from Sedation – we will talk you through the entire process including what to expect on the day. How long does the Treatment take to recover from? Recovery time is very quick following Dental Sedation. In fact, many patients are very coherent following Sedation and each person is carefully monitored prior to them leaving the Clinic. Could anyone else benefit from Sedation? Some people have a very strong gagging reflex and really struggle to keep their mouth open long enough to enable us to carry out necessary treatments. What would your advice be to anyone nervous about visiting their Dentist? Just call us to make an appointment for a consultation. If we feel that you would benefit from Sedation – this can easily be arranged and we can talk this through with you in more detail.

Stainland Bowling Club springs to life! There’s been quite a revival in Stainland over the last year. After a long period during which shops have shut, the (Mechanics) Village Hall has closed as a public amenity and the path has seemed downhill, we now have real signs of new growth and life in our community. The hard work of the Stainland and District Community Association has brightened up the village and given real hopes of Parish status in the near future. The Sports Association has, through the energy of its members, transformed a moribund cricket club into something that is looking like a real asset to the village. The graveyards of the United Reformed Church which lie near Fall Spring Gardens and off Stainland Road at Holywell Green have, at no little cost to the members and adherents of the Holywell Green-based church, become remarkable havens of peace and neatness to visit and in which to reflect. And we shouldn’t forget the amazing success of Stainland Lions or Stainland Stags either. So why is this piece headed “Stainland Bowling Club”? It’s because we too are a latter-day success story… We are stronger in numbers than maybe ever before, approaching fifty members (but with room for more). We’re starting a liaison with the aptly-named Bowling Green School. We exist as a club for league and social bowling However, as the only council-maintained green in

the whole Elland and District area, we now have to meet a doubling of our payments to the council for the green’s cutting and maintenance. Yes, in just one year the prices charged by the council have increased by 100%! So, what we need to do is to look at how we could provide our own greencare so that we could negotiate taking it on and reduce the threat to our very existence. So, how can you help? Firstly, by looking at the advert below. Do you know anyone with bowling green or horticultural expertise who might spare maybe two or three hours each week from April to September? Secondly, by considering joining us. No experience required. Subscriptions are light compared to golf clubs or many other organisations and you can have a free trial before committing yourself. It’s for all ages and there’s no expensive equipment to purchase. Let’s make it a lively village, not just a dormitory.

Stainland Green Bowling Club

Person wanted for part-time green-keeping duties Do you have bowling green or horticultural expertise? Light remuneration negotiable on the basis of two or three hours each week from April to September. Own equipment an advantage but not a necessity. Holiday Villas – A word of caution If you are disorganised enough to have left booking your summer holiday until now, you are probably desperately hunting through websites such as Owners Direct trying to find a villa that is free for a week in August. There are plenty of similar sites around; they offer owners a cost effective means of renting out their properties and frantic holidaymakers a supply of villas that have been overlooked by the big travel companies. But there is a growing problem with such websites; they are in effect advertising portals along the lines of Gumtree and are not regulated by ABTA or any similar organisation. Because of this, they are increasingly being targeted by internet fraudsters who masquerade as owners and steal deposits and upfront payments. Last year, some people lost thousands of pounds, not to mention having nowhere to go on holiday. Many owners have also wound up out of pocket because their villas have remained empty during the busy summer months, or they’ve felt obliged to honour the booking even though the rental money has been paid to someone else. It is often assumed that the scammers hack into the owner’s website account and then divert any enquiries to themselves, but this isn’t usually the case. Security on these websites tends to be pretty good and also the owner would normally receive an email to say their account details had been changed. Instead, how the scam works is this: the fraudster contacts a number of owners through the site with an enquiry. The owners reply to the query and in so doing provide their email addresses. He attempts to hack the email addresses; in the cases where he succeeds, he redirects any incoming emails to his own email. When a genuine enquiry comes in, he responds to it himself, takes the booking and arranges for the deposit to be transferred into his bank account. If he times it right, he can also bag the final payment. Then, a month before the holiday season gets into full

swing, he empties the bank account and disappears. I must stress that such frauds are very uncommon and affect only a tiny fraction of bookings made via such sites, the vast majority of which are mutually satisfactory to both sides. Even so, there are some simple steps that people can take to ensure that they don’t get caught out. As a holidaymaker, when you make your initial enquiry, ask for a phone number. If it looks like a place you are interested in booking, call the owner up to ask some general questions such as how close is the villa to shops and restaurants. A genuine owner will be able to answer your questions in detail. If the owner is reluctant to give a contact number or doesn’t respond to your messages, proceed with caution. Check to see if the villa has its own website; a lot of them do. A fraudster would have neither the desire nor the means to set up a website so the presence of one provides reassurance that the details are genuine. Finally, try to pay by credit or debit card as your payment will be protected by the card issuer. A lot of owners employ the services of a local letting agent to process payments, hand over keys and arrange cleaning and other services so you may well be able to do this. The best thing that owners can do is use an email linked to a domain, for example info@marbellavillas.co.uk. These email addresses are usually protected by randomly generated passwords and are far more secure than those provided by the main ISPs such as Hotmail or Gmail addresses. If this is not possible, use a password containing a random assortment of at least eight letters, characters and numbers when you set up the account. Don’t store the password on your computer. Wherever you go and however you decide to book your holiday, have a great time.

Homeowners are more likely to cry over spilt wine than milk...

The next time you settle down at your computer with a cup of tea or relax in your favourite chair with a glass of red wine, take care that your tipple doesn’t turn into an insurance claim, writes Emily Mitchell of leading rural insurer, NFU Mutual.

wine spill but experts recommend that you should never do this as red wine contains tannin which can be set permanently with salt;

‘It’s no use crying over spilt milk,’ or so the saying goes. But what happens if you spill a cup of coffee over your laptop or drop a glass or red wine on your expensive Persian rug?

• The best advice for treating any stain is to deal with it while it is still fresh;

Claims for accidental damage are some of the most common claims made under a home insurance policy and, when it comes to damage caused by liquids like red wine or tea, it is carpets, upholstery and electrical appliances (such as laptops and phones) that see the most claims. During 2014, NFU Mutual paid out £6.5 million in claims for accidental damage, with mishaps involving drinks accounting for 10% of this type of claim. Top of the list of tipples which cause the most damage was red wine, closely followed by coffee, soft drinks and tea. Carpets and soft furnishings were the items most commonly damaged by red wine, accounting for 73% of claims with laptops accounting for 26% and phones a mere 1%. Guitar amplifiers, pianos and items of clothing were also amongst the items damaged by red wine, with the most expensive claim submitted potentially costing £26,000. Accidents will happen! However, with a little care and forethought, it is possible to reduce the risk and ensure you are less likely to find yourself crying over spilt milk, wine or that well-earned cup of tea: • Keep drinks and liquids away from laptops and other electrical devices;

• Remember that tea and coffee also contain tannin, so don’t use salt to treat this type of stain;

• Dab, rather than rub a stain and make sure you use white paper towels or a clean, white lint-free cloth.

• Do not use phones and other electrical devices whilst in the bath; • There are lots of myths about stain removal and particularly the removal of red wine stains. One old wives’ tale is that you should sprinkle salt on a red

Recipe - Orange & Honey Flapjack This is a wonderfully simple recipe but very rewarding and SO much better than the mass produced service station alternatives. You can add whatever flavours you want to, so experiment all you like - but orange and honey is a great way to start! Ingredients: 200g oats 125g unsalted butter 50g golden syrup 65g honey 1 orange zest 300g orange juice ½ tsp salt 40g light brown soft sugar Method: In a large sauce pan reduce the orange juice by at least three quarters on a low heat, until it is thick and syrupy. Add into this same pan the butter,

syrup, honey, orange zest and sugar. Heat gently until the butter is melted and sugar dissolved. If the pan is big enough, add the oats directly into the mix – it saves on washing up – or tip into a bowl and then add the oats. Mix thoroughly and tip out and spread evenly onto a lined baking tray. It wants to be about 1.5 to 2cm deep. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 160oC for about 15-20 minutes until it turns golden and starts to crisp round the edges. If you like it crunchier then cook a little more and let the colour deepen. Allow to cool, then cut a large slice and eat secretly before offering to others!

Don’t be an easy target for burglars Every month there are over 30,000 burglaries in England and Wales and the cost to a household is not just in monetary value but emotional upset too.

There is an easy solution though as improvements have now been made with superior locks now widely available.

You may well have heard of “cylinder snapping” or “lock snapping“ or even the term “lock bumping”.

Look out for the symbols below for “anti bump” locks and reputable suppliers and installers. At a cost of around £60-80 to replace a lock it could easily be worth it for your peace of mind.

Lock snapping is a very common method used by burglars to break into property that has a euro cylinder lock. This kind of lock has been used in almost all properties that have UPVC doors, although a significant number of composite & aluminium doors use them too. Burglars have discovered what the locksmith and hardware industry have known for years. It doesn›t matter how many hook or dead bolts you have on your door, the weak point is the cylinder lock. Due to inherent weak points in the door cylinder lock, having little material to give robust strength and the screw fixing enhancing this weakness, using simple tools, a burglar can «snap» the cylinder and gain access to the door mechanism and open the door literally in seconds! In the past the police have not recorded the means of forced entry and so the method has been largely kept a secret but with easy access to information via the internet the «lock snappng» method has been on a steady increase since 2005. A recent Crime Survey for England and Wales (2004 to 2013) identified that forced lock entries were still the most significant method of entry in incidents of burglary and that the front of the property is the most common point of entry. According to the DHF (Door Hardware Federation) there are 45 million residential entrance doors in the UK with more than half of these vulnerable to snapping and other methods of attack.

2 standards have been released - TS007 (3 star rating system) which is used by the British Standards Intitute to Kitemark against and the Sold Secure Diamond standard which was developed by the Master Locksmith Association.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Elland, Greetland, Stainland, West Vale, Holywell Green, Sowood and Jagger Green areas & Andy is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Atishoo!

A campaigning nugget from 1912 - a meeting in support of votes for women was held at the Central Hall. Elland’s radical curate the Rev. Paul Stacey presided over the proceedings and Miss Annie Williams, district organiser for the Women’s Political and Social Union, was the guest speaker. The hall was packed and lively doings were expected because word had gone around that ‘election eggs’ would be plentiful! The eggs were absent however someone had deposited snuff or sneezing powder on the pillars in the room. As people began to move the powder rose to their nostrils and everyone began to cough and sneeze together. Not the best of starts for Miss Williams but as the dust settled she quickly won over the mostly male audience and sat down to a hearty ovation. Skip forward three years to 1915 and Elland Council were discussing the conduct of the local MP Charles Trevelyan and his continued opposition to the war. Much to the councillors’ surprise they passed a resolution that the MP ‘be taken out and shot’. Of course the councillors had no powers to enforce the execution of the sitting member for Elland. The wiser heads requested that the press representatives take no notice of the resolution nor the comments made. Fat chance! Canon Winter, Rector of St. Mary’s, in the church magazine bemoaned the state of the road in Church Street. The council had promised to repair the thoroughfare on numerous occasions but the street was a mess of mud, trenches and rocks. Canon Winter said that Church Street could now match the war-ravaged roads on the Western Front!

Perhaps the council was too preoccupied discussing brass bands…for many years bands (church bands exempted) had not been allowed to play in Elland’s streets on Sundays. Some bands now disembarked from the train at North Dean and played through the Greetland and West Vale streets (which was allowed) whilst wending their way to Elland Rec for Sunday concerts. A minority of councillors argued that now was the time to encourage music on Sundays especially to cheer up the townsfolk during wartime. A majority argued that the bands created a din and that street noise should be minimised (you couldn’t cry out to sell Sunday newspapers). One wag said that the Elland councillors were ‘a most unmusical lot’. On Wednesday 6th May, from 7pm, we will be commemorating at St. Mary’s the centenary of Lucy Hamerton’s death. Lucy was the author of Olde Elland. Her grave is on the eastern side of the graveyard. There will be a talk about Lucy plus readings from Olde Elland. A few copies of the book will be on sale. David J. Glanfield Greater Elland Historical Society www.gehs.org.uk History Room at Elland Library open every Tuesday & Thursday 2-4pm. Next meeting of the GEHS at Elland WMC, Weds 13th May at 7.15pm, - talk ‘Waterwheel to email’ - Alan Studdard.
