Eds’ Letter It’s hard to believe this is our 100th edition of Go Local for the Ryburn Valley and it was just over 10 years ago the idea was born over a bottle of wine. Over the last 10 years I’ve met some great people, made some lasting friendships, found out a lot about local businesses, had a baby who’s now a lovely boy and watched him go to school and fallen in love with our local area. It truly is one of the most beautiful and underestimated areas in England. As for the mag, we’ve grown from just 24 pages in black and white to much more than 100 pages of colour glossy mag. Implants – for the natural-looking solution to your Smile Dental implants at Town Hall Dental are becoming a very popular choice for many of their clientele. The use of Implants can also stop bone loss which can make your face lose volume – Implants prevent this.” Dental Implants are a great way of replacing one or more missing teeth. They are strong, permanent and look and feel completely natural. The implants themselves are tiny titanium metal rods/screws which are gently placed into your jawbone at the precise location of the intended tooth. Over a few months your jawbone bonds with the rods to form, in effect, a false tooth root. “The implants can then be used to support crowns or bridges. The end result is tooth replacements that look and feel so realistic you may even forget they’re not your real teeth,” Imran told us, “Implants can also be used to hold dentures firmly in place, making it easier for you to eat and speak with confidence.” What sort of Surgical Planning is required? “Prior to commencement of surgery, careful and detailed planning is required to identify vital structures as well as the shape and dimensions of the bone to properly orient the implants for the most predictable outcome. Two-dimensional radiographs are often taken prior to the surgery.”, said Imran. CT Scans and 3D Images may also be required in more complex cases. So – what is the Dental Implant procedure like? “It’s actually a very straight-forward, painless procedure,” said Imran, “They may be a ‘hi-tech solution’, but fitting one is straightforward and all done under local anaesthetic so our patients don’t feel a thing. Once the implant is in place, we’ll probably
have to wait about twelve weeks for it to settle before a crown’s fitted on top.” “Whatever is required – we can discuss the best options for you in terms of Dental Implants when you call in for your Consultation,” said Imran, “It’s a procedure that we are very familiar and experienced with and you are in very safe hands here.” Coming Soon..... Recipe - Lemon Risotto with fresh Salmon This is one of my favourite recipes for early summer. Always use fresh in season ingredient’s where you can, the results are so much better. Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 25g/1oz butter 2 shallots chopped small 1 garlic clove chopped small 300g/10oz Arborio rice 1ltr/1 ž pints hot vegetable stock (from a cube or bouillon is fine) 1 bunch of English asparagus, woody ends trimmed and washed. 75ml/2 ½ fl oz dry white wine. Juice and rind of 1 lemon. 80g/30z grated parmesan cheese. 120g fresh salmon fillet per serving. All the same size 1 lemon.
Place the salmon under a hot grill with a lemon slice on each piece for ten to twelve minutes. Leave to rest on a warm plate covered in foil. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large shallow frying pan. Fry the shallots gently until soft but not coloured, stir in the garlic and the rice, mix well. Pour in about a third of the hot stock, mixing until the liquid has evaporated. Keep repeating this process stirring all the time. As you add the final stock add the lemon juice, rind and asparagus, simmer gently until the mixture turns creamy and the asparagus is cooked but still firm. Season, add the white wine and half the parmesan cheese. Serve the risotto in shallow soup bowls. Place the salmon on the top, finish with the final small sprinkle of aged parmesan cheese.

2015 The Halifax Food & Drink Festival runs across the weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st June 2015 for the 8th consecutive year. Bringing together the very best of the regions home grown local produce along with a taste of Yorkshire and the rest of the world. The festival will take over a number of town centre streets with around 100 stalls and exhibitors promoting a vast offering of both food and drink. Plus a live demonstration kitchen with local chefs and regional food producers on stage, showcasing talents and tricks in the kitchen. The Halifax Food & Drink Festival is a free event in the heart of West Yorkshire.

We offer payment and an allowance for the child you look after, support from the fostering team and specialised training which can lead to NVQ level 3. We particularly need carers who can look after sibling groups, challenging children and teenagers. All our children are different, so we need all our carers to be different; many people can play a part in providing a child with the care they need. One of our foster carers, Anna, said: “I currently care for a young person who is facing the move to high school. When joining our family she was overshadowed by her behaviour; people labelled her as ‘naughty’. The child we see is
caring, loving and has many strengths, however she needed support and care to help manage her behaviours. Working with the team around us, we continue to give her the life she deserves. We love her as one of our own and would never change anything. The sun always shines on TV…. Well it does if you have the very latest 4K UHD, Smart TV with Freeview Play… I’m hoping that I’m not the only one who hasn’t really got a clue what that first sentence actually means. It sounds good though… For those of you who are completely tech savvy then I apologise if you know all this (and more) already, but for others here’s a potted history of the TV and what the latest innovations are for 2015. First let’s go back a bit. John Logie Baird, born in Glasgow in 1888, is credited with inventing the television, or at least he was the first to show moving pictures in 1925 on a screen in Selfridges, Oxford Street. Baird lived through an amazing time, when he was born there were few cars on the roads, no radio or television or planes in the skies, when he died in 1946 there were rockets, jet planes and the first computers. For the first 60 or so years technology for TVs didn’t change so much from the first heavy Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) models which showed a picture made up of green, red and blue dots. Moving a TV around then was a 2 person job! From the 1990s however the pace of development has just sprinted away both for TVs and computers… The first plasma and LCD screens became available, so light and thin compared to the CRT that they were a joy. Meanwhile the personal computer became affordable and the Internet was available though dial up Internet Service Provides like AOL. Fast forward to 2015 (passing by the digital switch over from analogue in 2102 and available fast broadband) and the screen type that has currently won
out is LED (Light Emitting Diode). We are now buying into sharper, true to life picture quality and the ability to watch what we want, when we want without having to plan in advance or “record” where the world of TV and computer has met in the middle. Here are some of the hottest features for 2015: Picture quality 4K Ultra HD TVs (also known as UHD TVs – ultra high definition) deliver four times as much detail as the standard 1080p Full HD, that’s eight million pixels compared to two million pixels. What that means in terms of potential image clarity is more fine detail, greater texture and an almost photographic emulsion of smoothness. On demand TV gets better Watch what you want, when you want. This is where TV and computer technology have met… Smart TVs have various features and use broadband connectivity to offer a whole host of features integrating cameras and smart phones, allowing Skype and internet access among others… Two recent on demand applications are Freetime and coming in the latter part of 2015 Freeview Play. Freetime lets you catch up on the last 7 days of TV across 26 channels with a roll back guide as well as being able to pause, rewind and record live TV. Handy… Freeview Play is the latest and most exciting feature for 2015. Freeview is the free-to-access broadcast service that launched back in 2002, enabling the switch from a few analogue channels to more than 60 digital TV channels for anyone with a Freeview box. Freeview Play is the same but is broadband connected and emulates rival paid services such as Sky TV and YouView in integrating online catchup TV services into its regular digital TV choices. Freeview Play users will see live TV, catch-up TV, and on-demand TV all rolled into one relatively seamless service via a customer’s broadband connection. Sounds great! Rachel Taylor

This Summer there’s lots of opportunity to support our local hospice… Overgate Hospice Choir Concert Saturday 20th June 7pm The summer concert will be music by Sir Arthur Sullivan and will include a complete performance of ‘Trial by Jury’ featuring your favourite soloists, and other Sullivan music. This year sees support again from the Elland and Sowerby Bridge Rotary Clubs, who will be bringing their Pig Race and the Human Fruit Machine, not forgetting the BBQ and bar!
This years’ Garden Party looks set to be the best yet; with face painting, games, stalls, music, food and drink and something for all the family. Please come and join us here at the hospice. Mountain Bike Challenge June 21st 9am A 26 mile route starting at 9am at Elland Recreation Ground. £15 entry / £20 on the day. The course is 26 miles of testing terrain around some of Calderdale’s best bridleways and tracks. 5km Colour Run Sat 11th July 11am After the massive success of last year’s event (over 450 runners raising over £17,000) we are back with the Colour Run at Savile Park. Adult £15/Child (aged 14 and under) £8. Our colour run consists of a 5km route with runners being doused in coloured powder at intervals culminating in a ‘Colour Party’ at the finish line. The programme includes songs from ‘The Tempest’,’ A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ and ‘Twelfth Night’ set to music by Vaughan Williams and Frank Harris among others. The Hepton Singers, based in Heptonstall, have a reputation for performing dramatic performances of exciting unaccompanied music from all ages. The choir has toured widely in the north of England and Europe.
CROWS is a small local charity working to improve access to the beautiful countryside of the Upper Calder and Ryburn Valleys. All volunteers, we help to maintain and improve the many footpaths and bridleways in our area. We put in steps, mend stiles, cut back overgrown vegetation, deal with drainage problems, waymark routes – anything that improves the public enjoyment of the countryside. Walking with History – The Sam Hill Trail Saturday June 6th, 11am. Fortunes, Feuds and Scandals. Join us for a guided walk through the colourful yet troubled life of Sam Hill, the Ryburn Valley’s notorious 18th century wool millionaire. The 3.5mile circular walk starts from St Bartholomew’s Church, Ripponden. Be prepared for muddy footpaths. There is no charge but donations are welcome. If you can’t make the walk, then why not Download the App? Pennine Horizons have developed a series of eTrails, working with community groups around the Calder Valley. Each trail is available as an App which can be downloaded to your Smart Phone or Tablet; including a map, walking directions, historical images, and audio commentary to take on the trail. There are also printed route guides available.
There are 12 trails, of between 2 and 8 miles, which enable you to explore the spectacular scenery of the Calder Valley, as well as informing you of the area’s rich history; 19th century water powered textile mills, Packhorse Trails, Radical history (women’s suffrage, plug riots, workers cooperatives, Chartism), Sam Hill and the Ryburn Valley, Todmorden Tops and the Fieldens, Heptonstall, and Hebden Bridge’s Woodland Heritage. David Fletcher, chair of Pennine Heritage said; “The South Pennines are a combination of unique landscape and outstanding industrial heritage; ‘the hills that built the modern world’. The area has long been a favoured resort for walkers and historians.
