Free Emergency Life Support Training How would you respond in an emergency? The skills of Emergency Life Support (ELS) are simple, can save lives and can be learnt in just 2 ½ hours. They can be performed by anyone to keep someone alive whilst the ambulance is on its way. The free Heartstart Course will teach you how to: • Perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) • Recognise and treat someone having a heart attack • Care for an unconscious casualty • Help someone who is choking • Manage serious bleeding • Learning these simple skills could help you save a life. Heartstart UK is an initiative co-coordinated by the British Heart Foundation to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives. It provides opportunities for people to learn the vital skills of ELS. Through Heartstart UK the BHF aims

to strengthen the chain of survival by promoting and supporting ELS training in the community. Heartstart courses will be run in the Ryburn Valley and will offer practical advice, whilst encouraging discussion on improving resuscitation knowledge and practice. The course requires no medical skills and illustrates that the benefits that CPR performed by a bystander in an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest are significant. If you can perform effective CPR whilst the ambulance is on its way you can more then double a person’s chance of survival. The next courses are being held at Brig Royd Surgery, Ripponden on Monday 16th March and then at Station Road Surgery, Sowerby Bridge on Tuesday 17th March. For Further information please contact Sue Bell on 07799 407497 *This could be the most valuable thing you will ever learn*

PICTORIAL MEADOWS Nothing evokes as many horticultural (and it would appear other) emotions as a beautifully floriforous and buzzing meadow; this is something that mother nature is very good at and we gardeners are not particularly. William Wordsworth, amongst others, waxed lyrically about its charms but, arguably more importantly, the delicious Hollywood actress, Daryl Hannah, admits, “My ideal is to wake up in the morning and run around the meadow naked…!’’ Praise indeed, particularly when you consider she could instead be flashing the veg or streaking through the shrubbery - so what more incentive could there be for creating a fantastic meadow than the possibility that the delectable Ms Hannah could pop round for a bowl of Cornflakes….?! Gardens often turn out be confused pastiches of borrowed landscapes, with our Himalayan style rockeries and trendy ‘prairie’ planting contriving to look as if it belongs where the Buffalo once roamed! Meadows are another of these “wild”

landscapes that we have been taming for many years now and one of their greatest exponents is (arguably) Prince Charles, whose Highgrove estate has many acres of impeccably maintained royal wilderness. After many years of care, these are now near enough truely ecologically sound meadows where many species of grasses, plants, bulbs and wildlife have sorted out their respective pecking orders and the cycles of flowering, seeding and clearing have been established. In its prime in late spring and early summer, this really is a sight to behold and, should Charles and Camilla feel the

Gardening | 7 urge for a Daryl-esque pre-porridge peregrination, then they have the perfect canvas. For the rest of us who do not have acres of garden to devote to this extreme form of naturalistic gardening and who would rather not frighten the neighbours first thing in the morning, what is the best solution to creating a meadow-like effect with all the good bits - bees, butterflies, birds and small furry creatures - without all the less interesting elements, such as months of rough looking grass and a total lack of knowledge on how to properly maintain it? Well, now there is a quick, painless and fool-proof way of having your own beautiful flowering meadow within 8 weeks of sowing which will continue to flower right through to late Autumn. Pictorial Meadows (www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk) is the brainchild of the University of Sheffield which continues to lead the way in the development of ecologically sound, yet aesthetically perfect seed mixes. The most popular tend to be annual combinations where, if you sow in March, April or May in well prepared soil, you can be guaranteed a glorious spectacle. These mixes first hit the headlines in 2012 when they were used (to rave reviews) in the Olympic

Park and they even named a favourite colour combination Golden Girl in honour of a certain local athlete! I first noticed them along a 3 mile stretch of a dual carriageway in Rotherham, where the council had taken the wise decision to replace all the central reservations with Pictorial Meadows. It meant no more expensive mowing and the rainbow of colour it created for months on end was incredible – the council were inundated with compliments and it reduced speeding dramatically on that stretch of road! They have also been used in many award winning gardens at Chelsea, demonstrating their perfect suitablity for smaller gardens and even for use in containers. I was lucky enough to have a look round their headquarters last week at the lovely Sheffield Manor Lodge – well worth a visit in the summer when you can see all their lovely meadows as well as the home farm and café. They are continually researching new combinations and I was pleased to note (mainly for Miss Hannah’s sake) that there is no intention to include either thistles or nettles in any of their meadows! What do you want to learn? Update from Jayne Firth, Greetland Academy

After canvassing the local community during Summer 14 we found that the most popular requests for evening classes in the area were French, Cookery, Latin Dancing and Ukulele, not a list that would have automatically sprung to mind. Having attempted to avoid the winter months, classes started in Jan 15. Despite a couple of week’s of snow and inclement weather forecasts our learners braved the storms and attended with much enthusiasm.

Our first batch of beginner classes have now come to an end and we would encourage anyone with an interest to get in touch. We are open to ideas of any kind. With a bank of ideas we can arrange taster sessions or market place events for you to come along and visit the venue. New learners encourage new funding, so you may even be able to attend for FREE. Please contact Jayne Firth with expressions of interest. j.firth@greetlandacademy.org.uk

Keeping it in the Family By John Jackson, Brighter Financial Services Ltd

Previously in these articles, John has highlighted the changes to pensions that will enable people from the age of 55 years to exercise choice in what they do with their savings. Just to re-cap, under the old rules, people needed to purchase an annuity, a type of savings plan, once they reached retirement and this would be provided in the form of an income.

Now people no longer have to purchase this type of plan (although these are still available, with increased flexibility in some cases) with their pension, they can take the money as one large lump sum, or as smaller sums over a longer period of time, with 25% being tax-free. “It is important to take note of the fact that for the first time, there are significant changes to pensions that will help family members and others in the event of death of the pension holder. John said. Prior to the changes, anyone who inherited a pension fund which was already being used to provide an income, had to pay tax. Spouses and children had to pay income tax. From April 2015, anyone who inherits a pension fund from somebody under the age of 75, will not have to pay tax, whether it is already being used or not. They will not be liable for income tax either. The table below clearly sets out what this will mean for all those entitled to receive another’s pension on death act that all pensions can now be inherited tax-free up to the age of 75 years, offers

At Brighter we are currently in consultation with our clients about how these changes can positively impact upon them and how, not only them, but also their spouse, other family members or significant others can benefit. In our view pensions have always been one of the best ways to save for retirement, as long as they are reflective of a person’s needs as far as possible, continue to meet expectations throughout their duration and that those holding them know how to take complete advantage from all that they have to offer. Gaining the right information at the right time, is key to making a pension work for you, so, look at these changes, understand the implications and if you require any further support, please contact me, without obligation. I will be glad to help”.

i-Care Opticians celebrate their first year in Halifax

The i-Care team have over twenty years experience caring for the needs of people in Calderdale. In their first year, they have quickly developed a reputation for great customer service, technical excellence and competitive pricing. The team, who worked in Halifax at Direkt Optik Opticians for many years prior to the closure in 2013, have welcomed back hundreds of patients and enjoyed meeting many new patients too in the last 12 months.

2 for 1 on over 600 frames

i-Care continues to offer a fantastic range of top quality, including designer, frames and lenses. Their exclusive 2for1 offer is as popular as ever. Unlike some other competitor offers, which give a lower specification or value for the second pair, i-Care offer your second pair with the same specification lenses as your first. “It means anyone choosing from one of our 600 top quality frames fitted with varifocal reflection free lenses could have the same top quality lens fitted to their second pair of glasses. They could also be made into prescription sunglasses at no extra cost,” says Cathy.

Free Eye Examinations

i-Care opticians are currently offering FREE eye examinations to all patients who order glasses from our extensive range of frames, plus if you have a valid free eye test voucher these can also be used. “We’re fully aware of the importance of your eye examination, it’s such a vital check of both the health of your eyes, as well as a great general health check too. An eye test not only checks your vision, it can also detect diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, raised blood pressure as well as other conditions which can affect general optical health.” Brooke explains.

Free Glasses for Children

At i-Care, children under 16 years of age, or 19 and under and in full time education, can have a free sight test and choose glasses from our range of designer kids frames or upgrade to our core and designer adult ranges.

It is very important to detect sight problems in children at a young age as if left undiagnosed can lead to learning difficulties and hold back a child’s development. Our extensive range of kids designer frames include Bench, Kickers and No Fear to name a few, all available FREE using the NHS optical voucher scheme.

In Store Offers

At i-Care we have offers to suit everyone and all budgets. With a fantastic range of traditional and designer frames from leading fashion labels including: Ray Ban, Armani, D&G, Guess, Duck and Cover, Jeff Banks, Bench, Versace, Jaeger and many more. Mental Health and Omega 3 By Mary McFadzean

With about a quarter of the British population experiencing some form of mental health problem at some stage in their life (source: Mental Health Foundation) it is good to hear that a natural alternative has been the subject of a number of studies and found to be beneficial for depression and anxiety. Omega 3, which can be found in oily fish like sardines, salmon, herring and mackerel appears to have not only a positive effect on our hearts and helps to fight against cancer and diabetes, it also has a stabling effect on our emotions, through the regulation of hormones. “But we have medicines to help with anxiety and depression” We do, but worrying side effects have come to light, particularly in young people and adolescents which have actually increased the symptoms of depression in some cases. It is positive that doctors and therapists are now looking at natural remedies to either support or replace orthodox medicine to reduce the risk of side-effects. “I really do not like oily fish though, can I get omega 3 from anywhere else” Yes you can, but beware of alternatives. There are two types of omega 3 found in oily fish and these

are known as the “long-chain” omega 3 fats (EPA and DHA). “Short-chain” omega 3 fats occur in flaxseed and linseed. Whilst some of us may prefer to take flaxseed, and it certainly does have health giving properties, the protection against mental health problems and reduction in symptoms of depression has only been found with the use of long-chain omega 3 fats. If you don’t like the taste of these fishes, fish oils are sold as supplements (but check the quality) and you can even get fish oils that taste of lemon, to entirely disguise the taste! Supplements also help as they reduce the number of toxins we ingest. “I take evening primrose oil to help with menstrual difficulties, does this contain omega 3?” Evening Primrose oil does not contain EPA or DHA but does contain an omega 6 fat “GLA” which has some health benefits. However, there is no evidence of a direct link between the reduction of depression or anxiety with consumption. You could take a fish oil and an evening primrose product and there are some supplements on the market that contain both. Mary McFadzean works as an Occupational Health Manager and freelance health writer.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Elland, Greetland, Stainland, West Vale, Holywell Green, Sowood and Jagger Green areas & Andy is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

DOG FOULING:

HEALTH HAZARD & BLIGHT ON OUR AREA Dog fouling continues to be a big problem in most parts of our area. ‘From speaking with many local residents throughout the year, I can say that it is one of the most common issues raised on the doorstep’, said Chris Pearson. ‘One of the things I have been arguing for within the current budget discussions has been additional resources to increase dog warden patrols and enforcement. During the last round of budget discussions, I argued a strong case with my elected colleagues for more resources into our Safer, Cleaner, Greener team. This point was taken forward and the current budget gave this important area more resources’. ‘I continue to raise the concerns of residents in relation to this issue and to highlight the health hazard that it poses to children, not just in Greetland & Stainland, but throughout Calderdale. It is worth remembering that it is a very small minority of irresponsible dog owners that are causing this problem as the vast majority are responsible and always clean up after their dogs’, said Chris, Conservative candidate for Greetland and Stainland Ward.
