Eds’ Letter Welcome to our June edition, Summer is here at long last. There’s no shortage of things to do this month with garden parties, food festivals, outdoor concerts so why not get warmed up for the summer season, get out there and join in! We also take a look at the history of Southgate Methodist church, a familiar sight in Elland and look back at one Elland man’s involvement in the Battle of Waterloo. Finally Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there this month!

Recipe - Lemon Risotto with fresh Salmon This is one of my favourite recipes for early summer. Always use fresh in season ingredient’s where you can, the results are so much better. Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil 25g/1oz butter 2 shallots chopped small 1 garlic clove chopped small 300g/10oz Arborio rice 1ltr/1 ž pints hot vegetable stock (from a cube or bouillon is fine) 1 bunch of English asparagus, woody ends trimmed and washed. 75ml/2 ½ fl oz dry white wine. Juice and rind of 1 lemon. 80g/30z grated parmesan cheese. 120g fresh salmon fillet per serving. All the same size 1 lemon.

Place the salmon under a hot grill with a lemon slice on each piece for ten to twelve minutes. Leave to rest on a warm plate covered in foil. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large shallow frying pan. Fry the shallots gently until soft but not coloured, stir in the garlic and the rice, mix well. Pour in about a third of the hot stock, mixing until the liquid has evaporated. Keep repeating this process stirring all the time. As you add the final stock add the lemon juice, rind and asparagus, simmer gently until the mixture turns creamy and the asparagus is cooked but still firm. Season, add the white wine and half the parmesan cheese. Serve the risotto in shallow soup bowls. Place the salmon on the top, finish with the final small sprinkle of aged parmesan cheese.

Cromwell Bottom - Nature on your doorstep Cromwell Bottom is a little haven of wilderness situated between Brighouse and Elland behind the ski lake. The Cromwell Bottom Wildlife Group are a mix of all ages and interests but all are passionate about nature and conservation. One of the main aims of the group is to improve the site’s varied habitats and encourage more wildlife to take up residence. The other equally important aim is to help children and anybody who wants to learn and appreciate our local outdoor space. The group considers the reserve as an Outdoor Classroom, although soon they hope to have an indoor one as well, and are just waiting for planning permission. Since the group formed they have had Schools, Brownies, Guides, Scouts and College students visiting for guided walks. Bat nights and moth nights are

run fairly regularly as are pond dipping events and activities can be tailored for groups of all ages. The site is 75 acres and has a mixture of habitats with wild flower meadows, woodland, wet woodland, a lagoon with reed beds and the River Calder running through the reserve. Since 2013 there have been recorded 107 types of bird, almost 100 moth and butterfly species and over 300 plants. On Saturday June 20th the group are holding an open day between 10.00am and 3.00pm plus a summer evening walk at 7.00pm. Everyone is welcome to come along. For more information on the group visit http://cromwellbottom.blogspot. co.uk David Langley

Ever considered being a foster carer? Calderdale Council is recruiting new carers to provide loving homes for children who cannot live with their parents. We offer payment and an allowance for the child you look after, support from the fostering team and specialised training which can lead to NVQ level 3. We particularly need carers who can look after sibling groups, challenging children and teenagers. All our children are different, so we need all our carers to be different; many people can play a part in providing a child with the care they need. One of our foster carers, Anna, said: “I currently care for a young person who is facing the move to high school. When joining our family she was overshadowed by her behaviour; people labelled her as ‘naughty’. The child we see is

caring, loving and has many strengths, however she needed support and care to help manage her behaviours. Working with the team around us, we continue to give her the life she deserves. We love her as one of our own and would never change anything. Fostering has changed our whole family for the better!” If you would like to know more about fostering, please ring 01422 288001 or visit www.calderdale.gov.uk/fostering.There is no commitment at this stage; it’s your opportunity to make an informed decision about what could be one of the most rewarding things you’ve ever done! Town Hall Dental

Implants – for the natural-looking solution to your Smile Dental implants at Town Hall Dental are becoming a very popular choice for many of their clientele. When it comes to providing a natural-looking solution to replacing permanently lost teeth – many patients have described their implants as the next best thing to still having their own teeth. Imran told us “Following the fitting of our Implants – gaps are elimated along with any chewing discomfort so our patients can smile and eat confidently. The use of Implants can also stop bone loss which can make your face lose volume – Implants prevent this.” Dental Implants are a great way of replacing one or more missing teeth. They are strong, permanent and look and feel completely natural. The implants themselves are tiny titanium metal rods/screws which are gently placed into your jawbone at the precise location of the intended tooth. Over a few months your jawbone bonds with the rods to form, in effect, a false tooth root. “The implants can then be used to support crowns or bridges. The end result is tooth replacements that look and feel so realistic you may even forget they’re not your real teeth,” Imran told us, “Implants can also be used to hold dentures firmly in place, making it easier for you to eat and speak with confidence.” What sort of Surgical Planning is required? “Prior to commencement of surgery, careful and detailed planning is required to identify vital structures as well as the shape and dimensions of the bone to properly orient the implants for the most predictable outcome. Two-dimensional radiographs are often taken prior to the surgery.”, said Imran. CT Scans and 3D Images may also be required in more complex cases. So – what is the Dental Implant procedure like? “It’s actually a very straight-forward, painless procedure,” said Imran, “They may be a ‘hi-tech solution’, but fitting one is straightforward and all done under local anaesthetic so our patients don’t feel a thing. Once the implant is in place, we’ll probably

have to wait about twelve weeks for it to settle before a crown’s fitted on top.” “Whatever is required – we can discuss the best options for you in terms of Dental Implants when you call in for your Consultation,” said Imran, “It’s a procedure that we are very familiar and experienced with and you are in very safe hands here.” Coming Soon..... A Town Hall Dental Patient’s personal experience of how Dental Implants have changed her life. Read more in next month’s Grapevine Mags. Special Offers currently at Town Hall Dental include;

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Andy Routledge feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Elland, Greetland, Stainland, West Vale, Holywell Green, Sowood and Jagger Green areas & Andy is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done

work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Andy a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
