Dear Y Members, Donors, and Volunteers,

What does it take to transform lives and strengthen our community? Reflecting on our mission and 2022, we are delighted with the momentum we’ve created in our core Youth Development and Healthy Living areas. We’ve designed, expanded, and enriched programs that nurture potential, foster well-being, support mental health and unite our community. This took the collective effort of donors, staff, volunteers, and partners.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and realize their potential. To that end, in 2022, we committed to advancing our youth programs. Our After-School program operated in four elementary schools, providing a safe environment that engaged students in rich learning, caring friendships and creative play. This gave working parents peace of mind and made a lasting impact on young lives. Moreover, we expanded our SummerBridge program. With an innovative blend of rigorous education curriculum and fun camp activities, we bridged the achievement gap, ignited a lifelong love of learning, and made summer unforgettable for hundreds of elementary-grade students.

We launched the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) to empower parents to be influential allies in their children’s academic success. Make-a-Splash continued to instill confidence and life-saving skills in every 2nd grader in Blaine County through free water safety and swim instruction. To round out our youth enrichment, we enhanced Bonni’s Garden, which connects students to the natural world, sparking curiosity and appreciation for our environment through hands-on experiences like beekeeping, worm farming, raising trout and hydroponic gardening.

Our commitment to a healthy community is at the heart of our Y. We further developed evidence-based programs that provide a positive impact on wellness, vitality, and friendships for seniors and those with chronic disease. We built on our top-notch fitness, climbing, and aquatics programs to meet our members’ enthusiasm.

Our donors’ unwavering support has allowed us to provide these outstanding services at partial and wholly subsidized rates and to provide financial aid. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners. Together we are transforming lives and strengthening our Wood River Valley community.

We look forward to continuing our work and amplifying our impact in the years ahead.

Warm regards,

WOOD RIVER COMMUNITY YMCA LOSES BELOVED BOARD

MEMBER AND FRIEND, DICK FOSBURY

The Wood River Community YMCA lost a beloved board member and friend, Dick Fosbury, who passed away at age 76 after a battle with cancer. Dick was a true champion for the Y, and his unwavering commitment to our mission will be deeply missed.

Dick played a crucial role in the building of our Y, serving as an early champion and then as the engineer for the property. He was a tireless advocate for youth and community health, and his dedication to good governance was an inspiration. Dick was an excellent listener, a patient guide, and a trusted friend to many.

One of Dick’s passions was environmental sustainability, and he was an integral part of the team that helped to reduce our facility’s consumption of gas and electricity, saving us hundreds of thousands of dollars. Through his leadership, he helped develop the Y’s air filtration system benefiting our members and staff. He was committed to making sure that our facilities were environmentally responsible and sustainable for future generations.

Dick had a great sense of humor and could always make us laugh. When asked how high he could jump, he once told us that he could jump over a Westfalia mini-bus, and then laughed, saying, “In my mind, I still can.” His spirit of innovation and his willingness to think outside the box will continue to inspire us for years to come.

We will miss Dick deeply, and we will carry on his legacy of dedication to the community. We are grateful for his contributions to our organization and to our community, and we are honored to have had him as a friend and colleague.

The Wood River Community YMCA would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Dick’s family and loved ones. We will always remember him as a champion for our cause and a true friend of the Y.

One of the great joys of being involved with the Y has always been the wonderful variety of individuals it attracts. One of my favorites has been Dick Fosbury. We originally asked Dick to help because of his years of civil engineering background. He filled that role for the Y for many years and later added the role of board member. He’d volunteer whenever we organized “hands on” projects, he spoke on behalf of the Y, and even as busy as he became as a Blaine County Commissioner, he stayed involved and was available when needed. Like so many others who actively help our Y, Dick was just a wonderful guy. I’m proud to have been one of his friends.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SPOTLIGHT SUMMERBRIDGE PARTNERING

In early 2021 the Wood River Community Y anticipated the devastating effect of the pandemic on young students. Y CEO, Jason Shearer, conceived a summer education program to heal the student’s academic, social, and emotional damage. While the vision included an innovative blend of rigorous literacy and math curriculum, fun camp activities, engaging field trips, healthy meals, convenient location, and high-quality staffing, he knew this would take a collaborative effort beyond the Y’s resources. Over the next few months, Jason and our Y staff enrolled crucial partners to bring the Y’s SummerBridge to life. Blaine County School District created a curriculum, extended teachers, and provided the venue at Bellevue Elementary. In addition to the Y’s Youth Development staff, we hired College of Idaho interns, Teach for America teachers, and I Have a Dream Foundation mentors to complete the essential staffing. Specialists from Lee Pesky Learning Center enabled reading intervention. Sun Valley Community School secured housing for interns and teachers, and Hunger Coalition supplied snacks. We are grateful to our partners in this groundbreaking endeavor. In 2022, the Y’s SummerBridge served over 270 children. Over the six-week program, the kids played games, made friends, sang silly songs, experienced wonder and awe on field trips, and worked hard to reach grade-level proficiency.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SPOTLIGHT THE NEW PIQE PROGRAM AT THE Y

Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) engages, empowers and transforms families by providing the knowledge and skills to partner with the Blaine County School District, Far + Wide, and our community to ensure local students achieve their full potential.

The Y launched PIQE in 2022, a powerful new program. Generous support for this program supports Y staff in leading 8-week parent engagement sessions for middle and high school students, along with their parents, including all curriculum and materials. These programs are designed to raise the family’s level of engagement, give them resources and tools, and move them into action. At its most basic level, this program engages and trains parents to advocate for and assist their own students to increase graduation rates and to access post-secondary education. PIQE creates an amazing sense of accomplishment for both the students and their parents.

With the support of several generous donors, the Y funded a staff position to lead the project in partnership with the Blaine County School District. In addition, the Y provides all necessary facilities and support. Through the Toni’s Scholars Fund, the Y hopes one day to provide scholarship assistance to low-income students.

The Y recruits Power Scholars/SummerBridge alumni and BCSD guidance counselor-recommended families. Our staff leader is fluent in Spanish and English and is a convener in LatinX communities. This program, along with our proven education programs, and eventual scholarship assistance program, will allow the Y to help children reach their full potential from kindergarten to post-secondary education.

Imagine standing with the Y when we help fund the first year of school for a child we helped first read in our Y Power Scholars Academy. Imagine a day when our shared vision and work comes to its fruition in a way that all can see and celebrate together. Imagine a bright young adult, who struggled in school and was identified by a teacher we know as needing help; now this student is a college graduate.

The Wood River Community YMCA is deeply saddened by the passing of one of our most cherished supporters and friends, Dick Hare. Dick was an original donor and fundraiser, helping to make the Y’s construction possible. He was a regular contributor, and his dedication to our organization continued throughout his life.

Later in life, Dick developed Parkinson’s disease, and he participated regularly in the Y’s Parkinson’s Disease program. He supported and inspired other patients in the program, and his optimism and concern for others were genuinely moving.

Dick was loved by Y members, staff, and volunteers, and his spirit will be missed. Parkinson’s took much from Dick, but it did not take his good cheer or his passion for service. He died as he lived, surrounded by loved ones and concerned about others. His legacy of love and commitment to the Y will live on. We appreciate all that Dick did for our organization and are honored to have had him as a friend and supporter.

In addition to his many contributions during his lifetime, Dick was a Legacy Club member and left a significant gift to the Y. We are profoundly grateful for his generosity and forward-thinking. Legacy gifts like Dick’s help ensure our Y continues to thrive and serve our community for generations.

The Wood River Community YMCA would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Dick’s children and his beloved wife, Patty. We will always remember him as a true champion for our cause and a dear friend.
