Wood River Community Y Annual Report

Page 1

Through generous support and passionate volunteer leadership, the Y is connecting the whole community, reducing the education achievement gap, keeping children water-safe, caring for vulnerable populations, and improving the health of our community.

We continue to expand our programs and grow our impact to meet the needs of the entire community.

Most of the Y’s programs are offered at no cost. When a fee is charged, no person is ever turned away based on an inability to pay. We are better together!

8,300

People have participated in Y education programs since we initiated our first summer education program in 2016.

Parents Graduated from the Ys PIQE Program

Thank you so much for all your help this year with your After School program. As two full time working parents, it has helped us enormously. Theo loved rock climbing, swimming, art projects, and ERC. All the teachers were great! We are very grateful for this program!

˜ Ben & Robin

139

School’s Out Day Camp Participants

School’s Out provides parents a safe, healthy environment for their children to stay engaged while parents are working.

One parent shared: “Thanks to this program, I now know how to get involved in my child’s education and support. It’s inspiring to see the impact of our efforts firsthand!”

300+

Summer School Participants

The Y’s SummerBridge and Nature Explorer programs help students achieve academic success and well-being. In 2023 SummerBridge student test results were exceptional. When comparing spring and fall test scores, BCSD reported that SummerBridge students outperformed their peers. This outcome results from our collaborative partnerships that provide a rich curriculum, a 4:1 educator-to-student ratio, reading specialists, bilingual staff, experiential learning, and camp-like socialization and fun. SummerBridge is a free program for all students.

229

Bonni’s Garden Participants

Bonni’s Garden, a state-of-the-art greenhouse and garden connects our community to nature and life, and sparks collaboration, growth and learning.

197

After School Participants

Kids Club provides homework help, STEAM activities, recreation, and a place to build healthy relationships with peers.

As a former swim instructor and coach, I was very impressed by how well-organized and safety-focused Make-A-Splash was. It was valuable for my son to brush up on his swimming skills and be reminded of water safety rules before the upcoming summer break. Even more importantly, I watched some of his classmates progress from abject fear of the pool on the first day to playing confidently in the water four days later. For both experienced swimmers and children whose families do not prioritize learning to swim, this program teaches an essential life skill and makes it fun! You and your wonderful team of volunteers (seriously, where do you find so many lovely, helpful, competent volunteers?) are improving and saving lives. I hope to be able to help with the program in the future. Thank you for making this possible for our community’s youth.

˜ Caitlin McCarthy, mom of Alturas 2nd grader

350

Make-A-Splash Participants

Make-a-Splash is the Y’s FREE program that teaches every Blaine County second grader to be water safe and offers free follow-up swim lessons to non-swimmers.

4833

Members

People of all ages, income levels, abilities, and backgrounds come together through the Y.

Longevity and Chronic Disease Program Participants

Enhanced Fitness, Delay the Disease, Time to Move and Healthy Families Partnership deliver positive quantified results.

183

Employees

Whether working as teachers, care providers, coaches, or lifeguards, Y staff care for people.

The best part of the Time To Move class is the people. I love being able to be social while I workout. I probably wouldn’t do any of this on my own so it’s great to be motivated by others.

Volunteer Hours

Committed community volunteers pitched in their personal time to drive the mission in 2023.

19 Apprentices

Registered with the Idaho Department of Labor and Idaho Business for Education as they complete 144 hours of on the job training in the areas of education and youth development. 20 Paid Interns

Receiving college credit and with paid tuition. 40 Community Programs & Classes

Many of these programs are free and financial assistance is available for all Y programs, including membership. No one is turned away based on an inability to pay.

We Drive Community Impact with Free Programs, Financial Assistance, Program Subsidies

and Life-Changing Interventions

Through the generosity of volunteers and donors, our free programs, financial assistance and program subsidies allow everyone in our community to participate in the Y regardless of financial ability.

In 2023, the Y provided $1,319,705 in program subsidies and financial assistance to support the community.

A Legacy of Love and Commitment to the Y

My husband and I were avid alpine skiers while living in Alaska in the 1970s. Through some of our ski friends, we heard about the incredible skiing Sun Valley had to offer, leading us to take our Christmas breaks skiing in Sun Valley. That ultimately led us to the biking and hiking trails of the area during the summer and fall.

Upon retirement, we decided to relocate to Idaho on a full-time basis, building a home in Elkhorn. Despite retiring from a 25-year career in education, I wasn’t ready to fully be done. Good fortune led me to substitute teaching opportunities in Blaine County, and eventually to a learning specialist position at the Sun Valley Community School.

I also had the occasional opportunity to fill in as an acting principal at Hemingway Elementary. During that time I witnessed the partnership between the Wood River Community YMCA and our students participating in the Y’s after school program and the Make-a-Splash water safety program, both so impactful for the children and their families.

Along with my own membership at the Y and how I saw the students benefiting from their Y experiences, I realized how well the Y serves our entire community. When friends are visiting me here in Sun Valley, the Y is always one of the places I like to share.

I recently made the decision to include the Wood River Community YMCA in my estate plans to ensure the Y is here for generations to come, something that makes me feel great.
