With gratitude and optimism, Jason Shearer, CEO, and Mike Schlatter, Board Chair

2021 was a pivotal year as we evolved from crisis response to proactive purpose-driven initiatives. While the challenges of the pandemic per sisted, our commitment to building a stronger community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility guided our focus on our Wood River Valley’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors, and people living with chronic disease. The Y forged a path to the future by acting in the present and putting our heart and soul into these core efforts.

While this report doesn’t begin to capture the treasured moments and heartfelt stories we shared, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to let the impact you’ve created sink in and touch something deep inside.

In youth development, we are passionate champions for elementary students who need to close the achievement gap that was exacerbated during the pandemic. We developed SummerBridge, a learning-intensive summer school combined with the adventure of field trips, play, and social activities Y kids count on. Our Summer Education programs not only served 246 students in 2021, it was free to all students, and significantly boosted their readiness for the next grade. The inaugural SummerBridge set the foundation for a larger and even more rigorous program in 2022 and beyond. We also continued to serve our Wood River Valley youth through literacy-infused after school programs, Bonni’s Garden, camps, Make-A-Splash, swim lessons and rock climbing.

Michael Schlatter

When it comes to the Y’s focus on social responsibility and our commitment to our community, we thank you, our donors, volunteers, holiday elves, partners, staff, members and program participants. It is our collective awareness, involvement, inspiration, and resilience that enhances the lives of all of us who call our Wood River Valley home.

Dear Y Family and Friends,

For those who come to the Y for healthy living, we worked diligently to restore the Y to full operations with new air filtration systems and safety protocols. We were particularly thrilled to restart the longevity and chronic disease programs. For many of our senior members, the Y was their antidote to the pandemic’s social isolation. We saw the power of community bonds positively impact our members’ mental health, physical fitness and overall well-being.

“We were alarmed to see early data on the impact of lost learning days and knew we could leverage our youth program know-how along with our deep caring and can-do attitude. With our mission ‘to build strong kids, strong families, and strong community’ and ‘ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive’ as our guide, we moved into action,” said Y CEO Jason Shearer.

THE Y AMPLIFIES COMMUNITY IMPACT THROUGH YOUTH EDUCATION

As 2021 highlighted the dire need to address the issues stemming from pandemic school disruptions, the Y amplified its focus on our most vulnerable elementary school children who were caught in a widening and detrimental achievement gap.

Seeing the crisis in childhood education, the Y harnessed the hearts, minds and resources of many to create the SummerBridge program.

In 2019 the Y’s Board of Directors had made education a strategic focus. “The greatest community need within our purview was to care for our kids. With hopeful optimism, we doubled down on education and put our resources toward creating a program to get kids back on track,” emphasized Y Board Chair Mike Schlatter.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SPOTLIGHT

“Reading proficiently by the end of third grade can be a make-or-break benchmark in a child’s educational development. Up until the end of third grade, most children are learning to read. Beginning in fourth grade, however, they are reading to learn, using their skills to gain more information in subjects such as math and science, to solve problems, to think critically about what they are learning, and to act upon and share that knowledge in the world around them. Up to 50% of the printed fourth-grade curriculum is incomprehensible to students who read below grade level. And 75% of students who are poor readers in third grade will remain poor readers in high school. Not surprisingly, students with relatively low literacy achievement tend to have more behavioral and social problems in subsequent grades and higher rates of repeating a grade. Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone’s reading skill at the end of third grade. A person who is not at least a modestly skilled reader by that time is unlikely to graduate from high school.”

School’s Out provides parents a safe, healthy environment for their children to stay engaged while parents are working.

The Y also set out to raise additional funds to ensure everyone who needed this program, regardless of income or background, had the opportunity to attend. This was made possible through the generous contributions from our donor “SummerBridgecommunity. would not have become a reality without the swift leadership of Jason Shearer and the adaptability, resil ience and execution of the Y staff,” says Schlatter. “They created SummerBridge while continuing to run our other crucial programs and world-class facilities with a mission-minded effectiveness. Talk about inspiring role models for our kids, I couldn’t be more proud of what they

While doubling down on the education side of youth development was hard work

and took a leap of faith, the Y is thrilled to be building a stronger community along side our schools, network of nonprofits, resources, volunteers, staff and donors in our Wood River Valley.

The Y’s SummerBridge, Power Scholars and Nature Explorers programs help students learn in a camp setting complete with songs, games, and field trips.

As you read this 2021 Annual Report, the Y will have completed its second year of SummerBridge. With the success and lessons learned from 2021, the Y expand ed its vision to serve over 275 kids and to provide more resources to ensure our kids start the next school year at or above grade level literacy and math. We are grateful to our SummerBridge 2022 staff and important partners which include the Blaine County School District, College of Idaho, Teach for America, Sun Valley Com munity School, Lee Pesky Learning Center, and I Have a Dream Foundation.

The Y staff worked tirelessly to transition its summer camp into summer education. Facing the valley-wide stress of labor and housing shortages, the Y found community partners, creating a rich program that included College of Idaho interns, Teach for America educators, Sun Valley Com munity School housing and BCSD resourc es and Accordingexpertise.toJimEverett, Co-President of the College of Idaho, “This is a perfect collaboration. The College of Idaho takes students of low economic means and high potential. The Y summer education pro gram serves similar students. College of Idaho students are there as mentors. They are influencing others. They’re learning empathy. Everyone of these skills is hugely important for leadership.”

Kids Club (at every Blaine County elementa ry school) provides homework help, STEAM activities, recreation, and a place to build healthy relationships with peers.

LiveStrong, Enhanced Fitness, Multiple Sclerosis Group, Diabetes Prevention Program, Delay the Disease and Healthy Families Partnership deliver positive quantified results.

Many of these programs are free and finan cial assistance is available for all Y programs, including membership. No one is turned away based on an inability to pay.

For the past 30 years, Sandy and Jim have made Ketchum their home. When they heard about the efforts to bring a Y to the area, they jumped in as donors and volunteers to aid in developing a much-needed facility with a focus on inclusive programming, especially for children, and regardless of means. As the Y’s early donors, they have incredible gratitude for the volunteers, fellow donors and staff who have worked tirelessly to create a Y many consider an invaluable resource.

It is the mountains and the people that often lure people to the Wood River Valley. For Jim Figge, it all began in 1948 on a family trip to Sun Valley. Subsequently, when Jim had children of his own, he shared that same experience in 1975.

The Youth Development is crucial, from Make-A-Splash that promotes water safety and prevents drowning, to SummerBridge that narrows the achievement gap with a goal to ensure kids are on track to read by the end of third grade.
