With Jasonthanks,Shearer, CEO and Mike Schlatter, Board Chair

Our success in transitioning almost every youth program to focus on literacy and/or STEM gave us confidence, and by winter we were planning to open Bellevue Elementary, Alturas Elementary, and the main Y facility to run Summer School in 2021 with support from the College of Idaho, Blaine County School District, Sun Valley Community School and other partners. Our goal was to have the capacity to serve 15-20% of local students. By targeting our programs to those who need the Y’s help most, we planned to significantly alter the impact this pandemic would have on Blaine County students. We’ll save the rest of that story for 2021.

Jason Shearer, CEO Mike Schlatter, Board Chair

Dear Friends, On March 15th, 2020 the Y closed for two months in an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Our board and staff worried that 15 years of collaborative effort, volunteerism, and giving might be swept away in months. What would happen to the children, seniors, and chronic disease patients served by the Y? What was happening to our local economy and how would that affect working parents, community health and youth education? How would the Y care for staff members who had worked to engage our community and serve vulnerable populations? So much was beyond our control in the early days of the pandemic while our nation sheltered in place. Thus, the Y began working on things it could control. Our efforts were small at first, but grew into significant community interventions addressing local needs.

Thank you for supporting the Y. Because of your generous support, our Y has meaning fully impacted the lives of seniors, people with chronic diseases, and students during the most difficult time in recent history.

In the United States, our education system is set up to teach students to read by 3rd grade. There may be some additional transition time during elementary school, but after that point, students must read to continue learning. This is why most students who don’t read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade don’t graduate from high school. Imagine the pressure that ending the school year early in the spring, coupled with a shortened school week in the following year, would have for students who did not yet read at grade level.

By the fall, the Y had transformed its main facility and rented The Mint in Hailey to help provide educational support for elementary-aged kids on the days they did not attend school. Online education was new for most families and for teachers. At first, younger students could not even read the instructions needed to navigate to their assigned homework. The Y’s program met a critical need for young learners and their parents, and allowed many teachers with young children to teach in school. With your generous help you can be proud of what your Y has done for the Wood River Valley.

Family Farm Day Goat YogaAs the pandemic was forcing economies to shift, the Wood River Community YMCA staff began calling our senior-aged members and those in our Chronic Disease programs to make sure they were healthy and safe, and had access to needed resources. Our youth development staff wrote multiple letters to every child in our care so they’d know they were not alone. We sent activities home through email and posted them online to keep young learners engaged. We recorded online exercise and meditation programs including online youth exercise and bathtub swim instruction. We paid our staff, even before there were government programs. In doing so, we helped preserve the economy and prevented these wonderful people from falling into poverty. Eventually we received Payroll Protection Program funds to support payroll and took out an Economic Injury Disaster Loan. On May 11th, the Y opened an education site for the children of essen tial workers who were attending online classes and in need of child care. On May 18th, the Y reopened its facility and exercise space using the highest safety protocols. Shortly after reopening, our senior and chronic disease classes resumed outside in the fresh air. Our facility’s systems were upgraded to address the Covid virus. Today, rooms at the Y can sense how many people are in occupan cy, increasing airflow as more people move into a space. Statically charged ions float through the air clinging to dust, smoke, pollen, and virus particles, causing them to fall to the ground or become trapped in our filtration system. Masks were required and sanitation stations were added. The community came to trust the Wood River Community YMCA’s protocols as some of the safest in the fitness industry. Opening our program for the students of essential workers, the Y began an amazing journey. By the summer, the Y had earned a place as the first academic program allowed reentry into a Blaine County School District facility. The Y’s successful summer school program, Power Scholars, had adapted its practices and district staff was already studying Y protocols to better understand how they might reopen school in the fall. Our popular summer camp program was adapted to include literacy and STEM. Shortly before school was to resume, we learned students and families would need the Y to do even more. School would not be able to resume five days a week. Our staff worked tirelessly to minimize the social and emotional toll on our children and parents with programs focused on ensuring children are safe, learning, growing, and engaging socially.

Mary Rolland has been visiting the Wood River Valley since the 1970s. She divides her time between Sun Valley and New York City; she is an accomplished artist, angler and a great friend of the Wood River Community YMCA. The Y is important to her, so important that she recently named the organization as a benefi ciary of a portion of her estate plans.

“I love aquatics and heard the Y had a fabulous saline pool where I could swim for my workout. More importantly, the Y is a com munity for young and old alike, and nobody is ever turned away if they cannot afford a membership or program. It is exciting to know my gift will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the MaryY.”feels

strongly that she give something back to the com munity that has given to her through music, theater, sports and incredible healthcare options. Deciding to leave a future gift to the Wood River Community YMCA in her estate plan was a very personal choice, and ultimately very gratifying.
