SPECIAL HALLOWEEN PREVIEW

WOODLOCH’S HAUNTED WALK ATTRACTION READIES ITSELF FOR SEASON Though the forests surrounding Woodloch are peaceful in daylight, the same can’t be said for evenings. Darkness, strange noises and commotions emerging from every corner and that feeling that someone (or something) is watching you make for an eerie experience. That’s why it’s a perfect location for some Halloween mischief! Woodloch is proud to announce that our now infamous Haunted Walks will be returning from the 2022 spooking season! “Our Haunted Hayrides first took off in 1996,” says Joey Ranner, Social Director. “We had limited props and sets, but a very enthusiastic cast of ghosts and ghouls.

Over the years, we’ve upped our game and I think we’ve put together something truly special for our guests.” Souls brave enough to chance the walk will be escorted up to our trail in the darkness. From there, they’ll be footing it through our labyrinth of horrors covering about a quarter-mile of non-stop scares. “Our goal is to make you uncomfortablewhether you fear the darkness, ghosts, monsters, creepy crawly critters, mirrors or tight spaces, we’ve got a little bit of everything,” says Joey. The experience will last about half an hour from start to stop, but trust us, that’s will be more than enough.

editorial Summer is back again. To me, that’s always meant two really big things: an early summer vacation (we take what we can get in the hospitality biz) and of course, a plethora of blockbuster movies headed their way to the local multiplex. 2020 saw fit to change almost everything we knew about the movie industry. It saw our favorite theaters shut down completely, with big-time movies even being released straight to streaming services. Animated movies, superhero films, horror flicks and everything else you can imagine was available to us immediately, and none of us even had to leave the comfort of our own homes. One could certainly argue that this new business model trumped the old approach in almost every single wayyou had the comfort of your own home, an unlimited supply of snacks in the fridge, the ability to pause for a stretch or bathroom break, and absolute privacy from the distraction of other theater goers. And don’t even get me started on the costs of it all. With the advancing technology in home theater setups, I’d be lying if I told you it

wasn’t something I am a proponent of myself. Most of the time. Truth be told, to me, there still isn’t anything quite like the movie theater experience. From start to finish, it’s something that is still quite special in my life. All of it starts with the planning- will it be a night out with friends? Date night? Simply looking to relax after a long week? Whatever the reason, a string of texts and calls converge in meeting at the theater. Next, the lobby. Bright lights, cardboard displays and of course that wonderful snack bar are just a prelude to the fun about to begin. It doesn’t matter if it’s overpriced- everyone’s a sucker for the lovely aroma of fresh hot buttered popcorn. Moments later, we’re in our seats (some of which have come a long way and even recline!) and watching a sizzle reel of upcoming trailers, of course followed by showtime itself. Pick the right theater, and you’ve got yourself surround sound and a gigantic screen to fully immerse yourself

in entertainment bliss. Collective audience reaction enhance all the big reveals and twists- imagine (or even remeber) being there in the flesh with fellow nerds as we discovered Darth Vader as Luke’s father! We’re all on the roller coaster, together. For 2 hours or so, we can let go of our worries and cares and (hopefully) just be entertained. My experiences are always followed up with roundtable critiques in both the theater exit and the long ride home, usually with the people I love most in the world. THAT is the theater experience. The point is, despite some shortcomings, I don’t want to see movie theaters go the way of the dodo, like roller skating rinks and discos. To me, they are just too culturally important to go away. Technology often provides flashy and more streamlined solutions, but we have to ask, is it always better? As I get older with more and more responsibilities (ugh), I don’t get to go out as much as I’d like to. But perhaps that’s why every visit to the cinema can become a treasured experience for me. -Ed

Critic’s Corner Our regular review of family classics for a new generation

BIG (1988)

COOL BEANS!

Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins

Coffee drinkers will like this... “a latte.”

The grass is always greener on the other side, isn’t it? That timeless addage is at the heart of Big, starring a then-32 year old Tom Hanks.

Coffee enthusiasts of any sort have no doubt made their way to our Gigi’s Coffee Shop. One can procure deliciously crafted beverages including lattes, espressos, “mudslides” or just a good ol’ fashioned cup of Joe.

The film begins with a frustrated 12 year old Josh Baskins wishing he was a little bit taller. Stumbling upon a mystical genie at a carnival, he gets just that: the next morning, he awakens as a fully grown adult man (Hanks). Terrified by the sudden change, he runs away from home and heads to New York City to track down another “Zoltar” genie and hopefully sort things out.

What you might not know right off the bat is that all of our beans are roasted just down the road in Honesedale at “Black & Brass.” Founded in 2016, Black & Brass has quickly grown to include multiple locations in our area, as well as supplying local restaurants, ice cream shops, grocery stores and cafes with their product.

He gets a job in the meantime as a clerk at a toy company as he adjusts to the difficulty of suddenly taking on life as a grownup. It’s not long before his child-like ways make him an unexpected rising star at Macmillen Toys. His outlooks earn him a huge promotion, lots of money and he even manages to meet his first love interest (Perkins). Josh soon learns that being an adults isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, facing office challenges and longing for family. The film isn’t anything revolutionary, nor does it try to be- at its heart, it’s simply a classic “fish out of water” story. Tom Hanks absolutely shines as an adolescent trapped in the body of a grown man- it even earned him a nomination for “Best Actor” from the Academy. The jokes and slapstick humor make for plenty of memorable scenes. Despite the film being 30+ years old, it has aged remarkably well. It has been said “it is a happy talent to know how to play”- the F.A.O Schwartz piano scene is the film’s best. The movie’s central thesis is one that both youth and adults should take to heart- don’t grow up too fast, and never let go of the spirit of your inner child.”

Farm to Table: A truly “back to nature” dining experience awaits patrons at TREE restaurant at the Lodge at Woodloch, a Destination Spa. Ingredients incorporated into so many of their beautiful dishes are grown only a few hundred feet away from the hotel complex at Blackmore Farm and Orchard. The complex, maintained year-round, includes greenhouses, a vegetable garden, orchard, composting operation, mushroom logs, and high tunnels. Blackmore even keeps their own bees for pollunation purposes around the sprawling Lodge campus and of course, honey. Their farmers believe in a philosophy of giving back to the environment first before ever receiving its bounty. They feed everything- from the soil’s microbes and earthworms, to the bees and butterflies, all the way up to the birds, deer, and yes, humans too. Their gardening philosophy and the ecology it has helped create is open to spa guests to explore, all day, every day.
