WINTER WARM-UP

Indulge in Cozy Treatments at The Lodge at Woodloch

Winter is here, and it’s the perfect time to cozy up and take care of yourself at The Lodge at Woodloch. Earlier this year, we launched a brand-new spa treatment menu, offering everything from organic skincare to Ayurvedic treatments. Whether you’re looking to warm up, unwind, or simply give your skin some much-needed hydration, we’ve got you covered.

In the Kitchens at Woodloch Resort

Winter can be tough on your skin, which is why we’re featuring Eminence Organic Skincare—a biodynamic line that’s not only great for your skin but also for the planet. For those who want something a little more hightech, we’ve partnered with Dr. Dennis Gross to offer facials with LED light treatments. These are perfect for targeting dry, winter skin and giving you a natural glow without any harsh chemicals.

A Tradition of Excellence

We’ve also introduced some indulgent seasonal treatments for winter. Our Chocolate Body Scrub uses a rich chocolate scrub followed by a luxurious shea butter moisturizer, leaving your skin soft and smooth. For a full-body experience, try the Whipped Chocolate Body Mask, which features a chocolate shea butter wrap that hydrates and nourishes the skin—plus, it’s anti-aging! And if your hands and feet need a little extra love, our Seasonal Chocolate Manicure and Pedicure includes a chocolate scrub and a soothing chocolate shea butter mask and massage—perfect for keeping your skin hydrated during the colder months.

Note from the publication: At Woodloch, we believe that dining is more than just a meal—it’s an experience rooted in tradition, passion, and creativity. Our kitchens are where the magic happens, and every dish tells a story.

We’ve had the honor of working closely with acclaimed journalist—and longtime Woodloch guest and friend—Roger Sands over the years. His work has appeared in Forbes, BELLA NYC, US News & World Report, and more.

This article features a behind-the-scenes look at what makes dining at Woodloch so special. From the teamwork in our kitchens to the artistry on each plate, Roger captures the essence of why our culinary offerings continue to delight our guests!

If you’re feeling run down or out of balance, our new Ayurvedic Treatment Menu is here to help. Led by Dr. Amber Goshorn, a distinguished practitioner in the field of Ayurveda, these treatments tap into ancient practices to help you feel centered again. Try the Abhyanga Hot Oil Massage—a warm, full-body massage that uses herbal oils to relax your muscles and detox your body. Or, for serious stress relief, go for the Shirodhara treatment, where warm oil is poured over your forehead to calm your mind and help you sleep better.

Serving up to 2,000 meals each day can be a daunting task for even the most experienced kitchens. However, it’s all in a day’s work for the skilled chefs and affable servers at Woodloch Resort.

Tucked away in the Lake Region of the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania, Woodloch Pines Resort boasts a storied history that dates back to 1958. Owned and operated since then by the Kiesendahl family, Woodloch is continually recognized as one the top all-inclusive resorts in the country and offers an endless array of activities. In addition to Woodloch Pines, the sprawling Woodloch complex includes the Inn at Woodloch (at Woodloch Pines) a reception venue ideal for weddings and other celebratory events, Woodloch Springs, an upscale golf community, and The Lodge at Woodloch, a luxurious destination spa.

Dinner guests can select such scrumptious entrees as Roast Prime Rib of Beef au jus with garlic mashed potatoes, Seafood Encrusted Haddock served over fresh asparagus with lemon beurre blanc or a Tofu Rice Bowl with broccoli, peppers and onion topped with sesame sauce. A special menu for kids is always available. Freshly made desserts prepared at the Inn’s bakery, such as a decadent Mud Pie, are always a big hit with the adults and young ones alike. Want a second bowl of soup or extra dessert? Just ask.

Food – delectable and plenty of it — is a staple at Woodloch Pines. Despite the high volume of meals, this is not your typical banquet-type fare. On the contrary, cuisine served fresh, fast and full of flavor is a major reason that generations of families return year after year.

Guests can select a dining plan with two or three meals daily, each with several prix fixe options. A hearty breakfast features assorted cereals, fruits and juices, eggs cooked to preference, bacon, yogurt and specialties such as an Egg White Vegetable Frittata. For lunch choose such favorites as a Buffalo Chicken Wrap, shredded lettuce, diced tomato & buffalo chicken or a Veggie Burger on whole wheat sandwich round.

For muscle relief, we’ve added TARA Spa Therapy massage oils and Body Bliss scrubs, gels, and balms to our lineup. These products are all-natural and nourishing, making them perfect for easing winter tension. And if you’ve found yourself intrigued by the hype around CBD treatments, we offer Cause+Medic CBD-infused therapies, which combine the power of hemp extract with soothing massage for deep relaxation and recovery.

Whether you visit The Lodge at Woodloch to unwind, recharge, or treat yourself, we’ve got a winter wellness experience just waiting for you.

Bob Kiesendahl, a third generation family member and coowner of the resort, serves as Food & Beverage Director. He explains how the kitchen functions like a well-oiled machine. “It is a traditional ordering and serving system that started with my grandparents 66 years ago that still works today with our higher counts and expanded menus,” he says. “There are no tickets. It requires our food and beverage to communicate openly and accurately.”

Gather up the family and go for the gold as we get ready for

Though the legendary flames of the 2024 Paris games have been extinguished, the action is just starting to heat up at our resort.

Any time now, the hallowed ground known as our Athletic Field will be layered with fresh powder, as far as the eye can see. Yes, it’s that time of year… we are ready for the resurrection of our renowned Winter Olympic games! Competitors will not have to wait until the 2026 games in Milano Cortina to showcase their athletic prowess- simply make the trek to Woodloch!

The world-famous Pocono Mountains are known for being a traveler’s mecca year round, but they hold a special place in the hearts of winter aficionados. Through the season, the region is famous for toasty resort lodges, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, and even a little bit of pond hockey. But it is perhaps most famous for its abundance of ski resorts! Even when there isn’t much natural snow, snow cannons work around the clock to provide plenty of snow for skiers, snowboarders and snow tubers alike.

Luckily, Woodloch has the same type of machinery at their disposal! As soon as temperatures drop low enough, thousands of gallons of water (courtesy of our lovely Lake Teedyuskung) are jetted through our guns, scattering copious amounts of snow across our resort. Our “cats” screech into gear, and the art of sculpting the landscape begins. The lakeside provides tubing with a view for the season until the springtime thaw, while the athletic field becomes our frosty battleground of family fun

Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best: “It is a happy talent to know how to play.” It is something that most of us excel at during the early years of our lives, yet somehow, the burden of responsibilities and a limited budget of time seem to chip away at one of life’s most wonderful gifts.

At Woodloch, it is our esteemed duty to live by this mantra, regardless of where our guests are in their own lives. We are blessed to be given an all-too-brief window of time during a family’s visit where we are hopefully able to bring everyone together through the power of play. By the end of it all, we have sent thousands of families back home with memories that will carry them through the year (if not remembered fondly for years to come.)

The good news here is that getting away on a vacation isn’t necessary to feel the same sort of connection- it just takes a little bit of effort on your behalf. When I was young, my father worked upwards of 60 hours a week and my mom kept a house full of six very energetic and lovingly problematic children. It was hard to get anyone to stop forward momentum at all for anything. However, we remained stalwart in dedicating a window of time to our “family fun night.”

Fun & Games

For better or worse, my family was quite the competitive brood. I imagine many of you fall into the same boat. So it goes without saying that the opportunity to prove yourself “the best” in a family of 8 was quite a coveted bragging right, if only for the evening. My parents took many of our nights to educate us on some of their favorite board games. Perhaps it was to gain a competitive advantage or simply to bask in nostalgia. Whatever the case, it was my first exposure to the likes of Guess Who, checkers, Boggle, Clue and Trivial Pursuit.

Once the children had outgrown classics like Candyland and “Hi-Ho Cherry-O,” games like Trouble, Scrabble and SORRY made for many an eventful game night. I even remember discovering the ins and outs of poker from games with my grandfather, learning the hard way through massive losses of stacks of pennies.

If I could go back and play every game over again, I would. The laughs, the thrill of victory, the disappointing losses, and even the occasional temper tantrums... I loved it all.

Snack Time

Our Family Fun nights were an excuse to enjoy some delicious food! Sometimes that would start with pizza or other takeout options, but our snack options for showtime rivaled the concession stand at the local multiplex. For us, it was not a night of health conscious decisions but rather an evening of induldgence. Popcorn, chips of every kind, Twizzlers, chocolate and even the occasional sundae bar remain fond memories of mine. To have that metabolism once more...

Behind the Scenes at the Woodloch Theme Show

Slowly but steadily through my life, I have become somewhat of a movie buff. I owe this to the fact that my parents dedicated many evenings to cinematic masterpieces! The evening would start with a trip to the video store where my dad would try to scout out a film that was good for the whole family. This was not an easy task in the early 90s, and it’s gotten even more challenging through the years. Choices included John Candy and Steve Martin comedies, the entire library of Disney and Pixar animated features, and even a critically acclaimed Oscar nominee here and there. Once dinner was cleaned up and the last of the kiddies were bathed, the family mirgrated round our console TV, fired up VCR, popped in the cassette and kept our fingers crossed. One way or another, a detailed panel review of the film between siblings would ensue.

Gettin’ Crafty...

Watching the theme show is one thing... performing in the Theme Show is a whole different experience all together. This past June, I was hired as the Content Marketing Manager at Woodloch. For my first week on the job, my colleagues had asked me to visit each of the different properties and experience the activities for myself. Before I could make videos about Woodloch, it was important that I understand what Woodloch was like from a guest perspective.

Making it your own

Not every family fun night involved movies. In fact, many of them were dedicated to a craft project of some sort. They were typically seasonal- jack o’ lanterns, holiday ornaments, scarecrows, Easter candy making and bead bracelets were just a few esteemed projects that were tackled. Results varied from “good” to “you tried.” Bless my parents for their patience in ensuring that six kids were able to craft to completion. There were even times when we were able to combine a craft, a snack, AND a movie for a trifecta of family fun!

When I was spending my time at Woodloch Pines, I was immediately interested in looking at the Theme Show. From how it was described, it looked like an evening filled with songs and dances. Coming from a background in theater, this seemed like the perfect event to go to.

Of course, that’s just how we did things. Families are all different. Junk food and poker are great for some, but others might prefer ants on a log and “Go Fish.” And as kids grow, Disney animated films might not cater to the crowd as well as they do at present. The important takeaway here is establishing “habit”- you get to the point where you will actually FEEL as if there is something you should be doing... and that is spending quality time with your family.

It was on a Wednesday night that I made my way into the Night Club theater. I eagerly waited in my seat as the room progressively got more crowded. Then, all of a sudden, Brad Kiesendahl came out and introduced what would be an hour and 20 minutes of Broadway caliber performing. I cannot overstate how blown away I was. At the very end of the show, I realized that one of the performers in the show was my director from 2 years ago, Brandon Hanks. Within a few weeks, I met with him after another show. When Brandon found out how I had been hired at Woodloch, he asked me if I would be interested in acting as an understudy for the show to which I replied, “yes!”

Truth be told, these were some of the most important core memories I’ve made, as little as they may have seemed at the time. With so much “distance” from one iPhone to the next, it may be well worth it to connect by disconnecting- may the good times roll!

After going through an audition process, I was sitting with Nichole Granville, the Director of the Theme Show at Woodloch. She handles everything from the music, casting, all the way down to costumes.

As we sat down about 3 weeks from the show, she revealed for me that I would be filling in for Brandon and Sammy’s role for 1 night. For those living under a rock in the Woodloch community, Sammy has been doing the Theme Show for over 40 years. He is immensely talented and knows the Woodloch shows inside and out. As we sat in her office and figured out costumes, Nichole had given me the materials to learn all the songs that I needed. I would get one rehearsal with the cast an hour before I was to go on. As the meeting ended, a sense of excitement and panic flooded over me. I had work to do.

HOMEMADE STOLLEN BREAD

most fun nights of performing I have ever done in my 15 years of being on stage.

Tis the season... for baking!

• 4 cups of A.P. Flour

This German seasonal bread has been around for almost 800 years, and gained popularity as a staple at fairs and festivals. We enjoy it at our resort to this day... make it a holiday tradition of your own!

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, combine both flours, milk powder, salt, butter flavoring, vanilla powder, yeast, water, eggs, and butter and mix for 10 minutes or until all ingredients are completely incorporated.

2. Add in raisins, dried fruit, and walnuts (and yellow food coloring if you want to be traditional). Divide dough into 4 equal sections and form into balls. Rest for 5 minutes and then flatten.

Just as quickly as it had begun, however, it had ended. One moment I was at the start and the next, the final chord had rung out and the cheers had begun. As I left work that night with my shirt soaked with sweat and my energy totally depleted, I had one thought in my head... the rest of the cast still does this show for another six months! The work that the cast and crew do for this Theme Show is incredible. For an entire year, they put blood, sweat, and tears into making a show that wows guest week after week. Week after week, show after show, they put 100 percent in and don’t let up. That is the work ethic you see at Woodloch with each of the properties and employees. That is not something you find everywhere. It’s something special.

3. In a separate bowl, add egg whites and equal parts of almond paste and sugar. Add cinnamon sugar filling to dough and fold over into a shell. Then shape it into size. Let the dough raise until it doubles in size.

4. Bake at 400°F until golden. Brush on a little extra butter and sugar while bread is still hot and serve.

• 1 1/2 cups of cake flour

• 3 tbsp. of milk powder

• 4 tsp. salt

• 2 1/2 tsp of butter flavoring

• 2 1/2 tsp of vanilla powder

• 6 tsp of yeast

• 1 1/2 cups of water

• 3 jumbo eggs

• 3/4 cup of butter

• 1 1/2 cups raisins

• 1 1/2 cups of dried fruit

• 1/3 cup walnuts

• Yellow food coloring

• Almond paste

• Cinnamon

• Sugar

• 1 egg white

The For Pete’s Sake Respite Experience at Woodloch

At the heart of Woodloch Resort’s partnership with For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation is a mission to give families in the midst of a cancer journey a chance to slow down, reconnect, and make lasting memories.

More than a decade ago, Woodloch and For Pete’s Sake (FPS) began a partnership rooted in their mutual dedication to supporting families. Both organizations share a vision of unity and healing, which has grown stronger each year. FPS has harnessed the specialness of Woodloch and crafted a unique respite experience that gives cancer patients aged 35-55, along with their families and caregivers, a chance to step away from their everyday challenges and take a break from cancer. This partnership is much more than just a getaway; it’s a transformative experience designed to provide moments of peace, connection, and joy.

Founded on the idea that a pause from the stresses of treatment and daily routines can be life-changing, For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation creates opportunities for families to focus on living in the present and strengthening bonds. FPS pioneered the concept of respite for cancer patients, with an approach that allows families to take a meaningful break and immerse themselves in each other’s company. This brief yet impactful reprieve has been shown to benefit families deeply. In fact, 100% of oncology professionals who refer patients to FPS report that these respites enhance the coping abilities of not only patients but also caregivers and children.

Woodloch has long been a preferred FPS destination, o ering a serene, family-focused environment that’s consistently rated among America’s best inclusive family resorts. From the early days of the collaboration, Woodloch hosted small groups of respite families, couples, or individuals, providing them with the space to unwind, recharge, and make treasured memories. However, the partnership took on a new and urgent role during the pandemic, when other FPS destination partners faced travel restrictions and limitations. Woodloch, committed to the FPS mission, found innovative ways to continue welcoming respite travelers. By broadening its o erings and adding new community-centered activities, this commitment to adapting the respite experience brought solace to many during an uncertain time.

Since June 2020, For Pete’s Sake has primarily utilized Woodloch Resort in Hawley, PA, for its Travel Respite program, and the impact has been significant. Over the past two years, Woodloch has

welcomed more than 500 individuals—patients, caregivers, and families—into its community. Together, FPS and Woodloch have developed an effective, scalable respite model: up to 10 families travel to Woodloch at the same time, accompanied by an FPS facilitator who guides daily activities. Each family has private accommodations and ample time to be alone together, balanced by optional group activities that bring families together.

This unique approach creates a supportive, empathetic environment where families can build connections with others who are facing similar challenges.

Impact.

The respite model at Woodloch has shown remarkable benefits, not only for the patients but also for everyone involved. Families report that these experiences give them a renewed sense of hope and unity, and the memories created serve as a source of strength in the face of cancer’s uncertainties. This collaboration allows FPS to plan respite stays more e ciently, budget responsibly, and ensure that this program can continue sustainably. The consistent quality and care provided at Woodloch make each respite impactful, leaving families feeling rejuvenated and reconnected.

Looking forward, FPS has an ambitious plan for the future; A permanent, dedicated respite center that will welcome travelers all year long. This project is the first of its kind in the nation. Along with the help, and ultimately facility management, Woodloch will be a strong partner in bringing this amazing concept to fruition.

For Pete’s Sake and Woodloch invite anyone interested to stay connected by visiting takeabreakfromcancer.org to learn more, sign up for updates, or support this vital work. Together, For Pete’s Sake and Woodloch are building a lasting legacy of respite, compassion, and support for families navigating the challenging cancer journey.

Behind the Scenes at the Woodloch Theme Show

The Flix Gettin’ Crafty...

Making it your own

Truth be told, these were some of the most important core memories I’ve made, as little as they may have seemed at the time. With so much “distance” from one iPhone to the next, it may be well worth it to connect by disconnecting- may the good times roll!

For the next 3 weeks, I practiced the music and dances repeatedly alone, anywhere I could, and anytime I had a free moment. On top of starting my new full-time job, I was getting ready to perform in front of guests who had been coming to Woodloch for over 50 years. I would listen over and over to the tracks and the transitions in the music. See, unlike the original versions of the songs, the theme shows trimmed and added certain sections to the songs to create a unique narrative and pace. I couldn’t just rely on my memory of the original songs to get through. I had to learn all the unique timing changes and key changes that came with the Theme Show. I was not alone throughout his process I should add. Nichole was checking in on me and making sure I was feeling okay about the performances. In addition, Jenn Kiesendahl, a longtime member of the cast and crazy talented performer, met me after work and taught me some of the choreography for the jazz section I would be doing with her.

When Saturday came rolling around, I rushed over to Woodloch from my house for the hour rehearsal before the start of the show. The rehearsal was my one opportunity to ask any last-minute questions I had. With no Sammy or Brandon, Nichole brought me through the show number by number. There was not a lot of time to go back and repeat things, so we briefly went through where I needed to be each number and where I had to exit. This rehearsal was also the first time I had met the entire cast. Here I was trying to look relaxed with people who had done the show more than 50 times!

When the rehearsal ended, I took some time before the show to pause and reflect. I thought about everything that I needed to do. I thought about everyone who had helped me get to this point. I thought about the most important thing to remember as I was performing... have fun. With that, the show started, I entered the light and started my one-hour marathon. The show was everything I thought it would be. It was energetic, funny, tiring, and rewarding all at the same time. Growing up listening to Sinatra, Elvis and Johnny Cash, I never thought I would ever do a show where I would perform like all three of them in one night. It was one of the most fun nights of performing I have ever done in my 15 years of being on stage.

Each meal is comprised of a team of servers and culinary staff of approximately 100 individuals. “In recent years, we’ve had to fortify the team with some international staff members who have added their talents as well,” Kiesendahl says. “We couldn’t do it without them.”

Gather up the family and go for the gold as we get ready for

Human Resources plays a major role in the success of the kitchens at the Woodloch properties. “We are constantly recruiting from culinary programs and other sources, and we look for a certain type of employee that fits the Woodloch philosophy of treating every guest like they are members of our family,” says Kiesendahl.

Servers go through a training process with senior staff and must complete a checklist before being on their own. Servers, who are responsible for about 25 to 30 guests, bend over backwards to accommodate guests who are seated at the same table for the duration of their stay, thus enabling servers and guests to know one another on a personal level.

That philosophy is mirrored at The Lodge at Woodloch. An exquisite retreat for nutrition-conscious travelers, The Lodge embodies the culinary philosophy that food not only fuels bodies but ignites passions and nourishes minds. The Lodge believes that food that is good for you can also be creative, artfully presented and graciously served. Naturally raised meats and fish are hand selected along with organic, locally grown vegetables. With three kitchen gardens on the property, guests are assured that fresh, natural flavors are highlighted.

Though the legendary flames of the 2024 Paris games have been extinguished, the action is just starting to heat up at our resort.

“The philosophy of seating guests at the same table for their entire stay is one of the first ways we try to make our guests feel at home when they come into the dining room for their first meal,” explains Corey Neenan, Assistant Dining Room Manager. “I cannot tell you how many times I bring guests to their table for the first meal of their stay and hear that this is where they sat last year or they are back at their usual spot.”

He adds, “If I have senior groups here for the midweeks September through May, most of those will traditionally book our three-meal plan. During our peak season of July and August most people are on the breakfast and dinner plan.”

Executive Chefs Dan Corcoran and Brian Crandall, who combine for 81 years of Woodloch experience, oversee a highly skilled culinary team. A designated point person in the kitchen ensures that all special dietary requests are honored. “We often have to account for about eight allergens,” explains Corcoran. “Following the latest food trends helps us select menus, and dinner usually includes a pasta, meat, fish and vegetarian. We have someone running the floor and another person in charge of the prep list.” Kitchen Manager John Taninies is often referred to as the “backbone” of the kitchen.

“We have a lot of experience in the kitchen,” says Crandall, who began his career at Woodloch as a dishwasher and later attended culinary school. “We usually prep a day ahead for most meals.”

Executive Chef Bill Seitzinger, now with the Lodge over eight years, says, “We strive for a balance between nutrition, health and pleasing the palate. When is season, between 95% and 100% of our crops are grown here and we try to be as sustainable as possible. We get the best possible product and treat it the right way.” According to Seitzinger, about half of the Lodge’s guests have special dietary requests. “They come here because of our reputation for being able to accommodate a wide variety of culinary needs. We try to make everything as natural and wholesome as possible.” Seitzinger is assisted in the kitchen by Olaf Wozny, Chef de Cuisine, along with six people on the line for lunch and eight for dinner. Seitzinger’s wife Colleen serves as the pastry chef and creates some of the most delicious desserts imaginable.

Of course, Woodloch Resort isn’t only about food. Family activities such as scavenger hunts, swimming, boat rides, gocarts, theme shows and cookouts are all part of Woodloch’s allure, as is championship golf and an exquisite spa treatment. However, the food alone is worth the visit.

Since opening our doors over 65 years ago, Woodloch has been a popular escape for families. Tobogganing, skating, and old fashioned snowball fights were always a hit. But in the 1990s, the activities program upped their game. Social Director Joey Ranner remembers the games’ inception well. “We already knew many families that visited in the summer and enjoyed our Olympics also visited in winter. We liked getting people outside and competing against each other. When it became possible to make our own snow on our hilly landscape, it just became a natural fit for us.”

Woodloch’s social staff rolls up their sleeves to “imagineer” six new relay events every year. Sometimes we stick to the classics (it doesn’t make hockey slapshots any easier), make life-size versions of tabletop games, or invent something new entirely. You never know what obstacles you’ll be facing until game day.

Unlike the “official” winter games, you’ll have the honor of competing in teams of 10 or so players. That could be your family, friends, or an ad-hoc supersquad of perfect strangers. We’ve even hosted our Olympics for corporate retreats of 200+ co-workers! “Great games, big bonfires, hot chocolate, wintery landscapes, medals and memories... it just works,” says Joey.

In the end, you don’t need to train for months or cut any carbs to compete for the coveted Woodloch medals. Simply bundle up and huddle up with some friendly faces, and let America’s Favorite Family Resort do the rest... we promise, it’ll be snow much fun!

Food – delectable and plenty of it — is a staple at Woodloch Pines. Despite the high volume of meals, this is not your typical banquet-type fare. On the contrary, cuisine served fresh, fast and full of flavor is a major reason that generations of families return year after year.
