Comprehensive Distance Learning Hello Bulldogs!

Earlier this month, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) released guidance for schools that included metrics on safely reopening schools for in-person instruction. Following their guidance the Woodburn School District and Superintendent Oscar Gilson announced that all students will begin the school year in comprehensive distance learning. We know that this announcement was heartbreaking for students and families who were hoping for a "normal" school year that included in-person learning. However, we also want to be able to ensure that students and families are safe and healthy, and believe that the direction from the state prioritizes the safety of our educators, children and families, and community. As a district we will continue to monitor the metrics, and will look forward to a time when when can transition to hybrid learning. Comprehensive distance learning will not look like distance learning from the spring. Comprehensive distance learning will include significantly more teacher-facilitated instruction, more independent and family-supported applied learning, daily attendance, students will earn grades and high school students will earn credits. The high school is also implementing a slow start to the school year. The week of Sept. 8 will be used to establish connections with students and families, and help students learn some of the routines and structures needed for being successful in distance learning. We miss our students in the schools and value in-person learning, which is where we want to be sooner than later. Know we are committed to our educators, students, and families and stand with you during this time. The Woodburn School District's priority has and always will put the health and safety of our students and staff as our top priority. While we would like nothing more than to begin school in the fall like normal, we must continue our best practices to help in lowering the spread of COVID-19. We, as a district, are committed to practicing the guidelines put in place by Governor Kate Brown, the Oregon Health Authority, the Oregon Department of Education, and Marion County Public Health Department. As always, we ask that you only send your student to school if they are healthy. Stay healthy and happy, Bulldogs!
