SUMMER UPDATES

Help us celebrate the hard work of our staff

As summer rolls along, I want to take a moment to share a few important updates and invite you to be part of some meaningful happenings at the Club.

Support

Our Staff Picnic – Donate a Raffle Item!

Our annual Staff Appreciation Picnic is scheduled for Monday, Aug 11, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the incredible team that keeps the Club running smoothly all year long. One of the highlights of the event is our staff raffle, and we’d love your help in making it extra special. If you or your business would like to donate a raffle prize—gift cards, merchandise, services, or themed baskets—it would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at my office anytime between now and Aug 8.

Heads Up: Member Surveys Coming Your Way

We’re always striving to improve your experience at Woodbridge, and your feedback plays a vital role. Beginning this week, you may receive a ClubIQ Member Survey by email. These surveys are being distributed gradually—about 15–20 per day—so not all members will receive one at once. If you’re selected, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts. Your voice matters, and your responses will help guide future improvements.

Golf Clock Project Update

We’re thrilled to share that thanks to your generous support, we’ve officially exceeded our fundraising goal for the new Golf Course Clock project! Engraved commemorative bricks have been ordered and are scheduled to be delivered in approximately six weeks. We can’t wait to install this beautiful and timeless addition to the course, made possible by the community spirit of our members.

Thank you, as always, for being an essential part of the Woodbridge family. Your involvement and enthusiasm are what make this Club such a special place.

• Total Debt: Down by more than $170,000, a positive step as we continue to reduce our long-term liabilities.

Family, Friendship, and Fun on the Course... Laura Reeves

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on longtime member Laura Reeves, whose connection to Woodbridge spans more than three decades. Not only is she serving on the Board of Directors, but Laura is also co-chair of the 18Hole Ladies Group; chaired the Centennial Committee last year; co-chairs the Membership Committee this year; and has also served on the House & Social Committee. To say she has been involved in the Club is an understatement — and why staff chose her for this month’s Member Spotlight.

From family traditions to friendly competitions, Laura’s story is a testament to the community spirit that makes our Club special.

Q&A with Laura

Q: How long have you been a member at Woodbridge?

I’ve been a member since I married my husband, Steve, in 1993—32 years ago!

Q: What brought you to the Club originally?

My husband. We got married on the course in his parents’ backyard and had our reception at the Club.

Q: What's your favorite way to spend time here?

I’m currently a 27 handicap, and my goal is to get down to a 25 before the end of the year.

Q: Who’s your favorite person to golf with and why?

Sharon Daegling is my go-to person. We started playing golf together and have improved together. She can still out-drive me, but I’m working on that!

Q: Tell us a fun fact most members don’t know about you. I was born in Petaluma and had a horse named Sassy.

Playing golf with friends, socializing, and volunteering.

Q: What’s your go-to post-round meal or drink at the Club? Hummus, washed down with a nice Chardonnay!

Q: Any proud moments on the course you'd like to share? Watching our son, Bradley, grow up on the course, excel in high school and at the University of Arizona, and eventually turn pro. Oh, and the holes-in-one he has made. I’m still waiting for my first!

Q: What's your handicap, and what’s your goal for this season?

Q: How do you spend your time outside the Club?

I work one day a week (Mondays) for Dr. Morrissey in Stockton. I volunteer for the LOEL Center and the Lodi Sunrise Rotary Club. Most importantly, I like to spend time with my family.

Q: What advice would you give to a new member?

You are the future of our Club. Enjoy it and get involved!

Q: Do you have a favorite hole on the course?

I’d say Hole #8 – Vineyard (Middle). I’ve birdied it a few times and even came close to a hole-in-one!

Q: Who inspires you—on or off the course?

My parents inspired me. They taught my brother and me values that have shaped who we are today.

Q: Do you play other sports or enjoy other hobbies? I used to play tennis, volleyball, baseball, and ping pong, but not as much anymore. I enjoy going to SF Giants and Sacramento Kings games, but my favorite is cheering on the SF 49ers—tailgating and all! My husband and I also love traveling and wine tasting together.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:

the Friendly Face of the Golf Shop... Carson Kosaka

If you've ever stopped by the Golf Shop and been greeted with a helpful smile and expert advice, chances are you've met Carson Kosaka. A valued part of the Woodbridge team for more than four years, Carson brings positivity, professionalism, and a genuine love for the game—and for the members who play it. Get to know more about him in this month’s Staff Spotlight Q&A.

Q&A with Carson

Q: What’s your current role at the Club, and how long have you been part of the team?

A: I’m a Golf Shop Assistant, and I’ve been here for 4½ years.

Q: What originally brought you to Woodbridge Golf & Country Club?

A: After graduating from Lodi High School, I got a job here in the cart barn thanks to a friend who was working here at the time.

Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: I really enjoy meeting so many amazing people and helping however I can—whether that’s with their golf game or even acting as a “tech guy” for their phone. I also love working the golf tournaments.

Q: Do you have a favorite event or tradition at the Club?

A: Definitely the Tokay Invitational. The horse race and the par-three shootout are always a blast—I look forward to them every year. I also enjoy the Lewis and Clark Tournament. It’s fun to watch members play shots to different holes.

Q: Can you share a memorable moment or story from your time here?

A: Nothing specific stands out, but the energy and excitement

around tournaments like the Tokay Invitational always leave a lasting impression.

Q: What’s your go-to meal or drink from the Club menu?

A: Probably the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl.

Q: How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

A: I enjoy watching sports, going on trips with my family, and spending time with my girlfriend, Madison.

Q: Do you have career aspirations outside of the Club?

A: I’m currently enrolled in the PGA program and working toward becoming a PGA professional.

Q: Who or what inspires you in your work?

A: My family. I was raised to be respectful and helpful, and I strive to live up to that every day I come to work.

Q: If you could switch roles with someone at the Club for a day, who would it be and why?

A: I’d love to learn more about the maintenance side of golf— changing the cup for a hole or using the greens roller always intrigues me when I see it done.

Q: What’s one fun fact about you that members might not know?

A: A couple, actually! I’m only 23 years old, which always surprises people—and I have a pretty good baseball card collection.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being part of the Woodbridge community?

A: Everyone here is so kind and makes me feel like I’m part of their family.

GOLF, HAPPINESS & WELL-BEING

National Golf Month & National Happiness Happens Month

As we move through the heart of summer, August offers us two great reminders: it’s National Golf Month and also Happiness Happens Month. Both themes feel especially fitting here at Woodbridge, where we’re lucky to have more ways than ever to stay active, connect with community, and find joy in motion.

Whether you're walking nine holes at sunset, rallying on the tennis or pickleball courts, swimming laps, or stepping into the Fitness Center for strength and recovery—you're investing in your long-term wellness. And that’s something to celebrate.

Golf in particular is known for its unique combination of mindfulness, movement, and social connection. It’s no wonder research continues to support its positive effects on both physical and mental health— including heart health, balance, mood, and even longevity. If you’ve been looking for a sign to get back into the game (or to give it a try), this is it.

As a certified wellness professional, I can confidently say: when joy and movement go hand-in-hand, real transformation happens. And you don’t have to overhaul your lifestyle to benefit—just making time each week for activities you enjoy at the Club is a powerful act of self-care.

Not a Golf Member yet? August is the perfect time to upgrade your membership and start enjoying all the wellness benefits of the game.

Still on a Dining Membership? Step into a healthier lifestyle with a Sports Membership upgrade—you’ll gain full access to tennis, pickleball, swim, and fitness.

Feeling the happiness? Share the joy—refer a friend to join the Club this month and help them find their own wellness routine at Woodbridge.

So this month, I invite you to ask yourself: “What would make me feel healthier and happier right now?”

Then say yes to it.

See you on the course, in the gym, or swinging at the courts.

JULY’S NEW MEMBERS

We’re thrilled to welcome several new families to the Woodbridge Golf & Country Club community this month. Each brings their own unique story, values, and enthusiasm—and we can’t wait for you to meet them around the Club!

Don & Peggy Walters

Single Golf | Sponsored by Mike Isola

Don and Peggy Walters are longtime Lodi residents with deep roots in the community. Married since 1976, they have three grown children and four grandchildren, with whom they spend much of their time. Their Christian faith is central to their lives, and they attend First Baptist Church in Lodi. Don has served as an elder in their former church, president of the school board at Jim Elliot High School, and president of the Rivergate Homeowners Association. He is also the managing member of Grower Direct Marketing. Together, Don and Peggy run a nonprofit organization that supports families of children with cancer. They’re looking forward to enjoying both the sport and social opportunities at Woodbridge—especially reconnecting with the many friends they already have here.

Brittany & Brian De Luca

Sports | Sponsored by the Membership Committee

Brittany and Brian De Luca, along with their two-year-old daughter Dylan, are excited to begin their Club journey. The De Lucas have lived in the Woodbridge area for about a year and are loving their new neighborhood. Brittany works as an Account Executive for Availability Professional Staffing, while Brian is an Oiler for Marques General Engineering. Married for three years this month, the De Lucas are especially excited about pool season and all the benefits that come with their Sports membership. They’re hoping to meet more young families and envision their daughter eventually learning tennis and golf right here at the Club.

Jordan & Jessica Billups

Sports | Sponsored by Dr. Tom McKenzie

Jordan and Jessica (Jessie) Billups are proud to raise their family in the same Lodi community where they’ve lived their entire lives. Jordan works as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) at Adventist Health Lodi Memorial, where he assists in surgeries and has worked for over two decades. Jessie is Vice Principal at St. Peter Lutheran School, her lifelong church and school home, where she has attended, volunteered, and served for over 34 years. Together with their almost-four-year-old daughter, the Billups family is excited to enjoy all that Woodbridge has to offer—especially the pool, gym, tennis, golf, and social events. As an active family with strong community values, they’re looking forward to creating lasting connections and becoming an integral part of the Club’s culture.

Golf Rules

Last Month’s Question –

In Four-Ball match play with side A-B, A holes out. Before B holes out, A practices putting on the fringe of the putting green without helping B's play or hurting the opponent's play. What is the ruling?

Answer –

No penalty, as it did not help B or interfere with opponents.

This Month’s Question –

In Four-Ball match play, a player improves conditions affecting the stroke to be made by their partner but the action is of no help to the player. What is the ruling?

THE HEAT IS ON — THE COURSE August is Demanding Month for Golf Maintenance

As we move through the peak of summer, the Agronomy Team is focused on navigating one of the most challenging stretches of the year for course conditioning. August presents intense heat, long days, and high humidity, all of which can put immense stress on our turf and plant health. This month is a true test of both our maintenance practices and the resilience of our playing surfaces.

Heat Stress: A Delicate Balancing Act

With afternoon temperatures regularly reaching the upper 90s and occasionally pushing into triple digits, turfgrass— especially cool-season varieties on greens and tees—is highly susceptible to heat stress. These conditions not only impact turf health but also increase disease pressure and reduce recovery time from daily play. To counter this, we adjust irrigation daily, applying water only where and when it's needed.

Cultural Practices & Prevention

Preventative fungicide programs are being maintained to guard against summer patch, anthracnose, and other heat-fueled diseases. Our team is also foliar-feeding greens and surrounding areas to provide essential nutrients without overloading the root zone. We are scheduled to vent the greens this month—a light, non-invasive aerification that relieves soil compaction, improves gas exchange, and helps greens

breathe better during the hottest part of the year.

Course Fans & Microclimate Management

You may have noticed fans installed on select greens in the Vineyard nine. These are not for comfort—they are vital tools that move air across low-lying or poorly circulated greens, reducing humidity, increasing transpiration, and limiting disease development. They're especially helpful in areas where shade and still air can trap heat and moisture.

Member Partnerships Matter

As always, our team works hard behind the scenes, but we rely on your partnership to help preserve the course during the summer grind. Please continue to repair ball marks, replace or fill divots, and follow cart traffic guidelines. Even small actions can help reduce turf stress and allow for quicker recovery after each day of play.

August is a demanding month for the golf course, but with continued care and attention, we’ll guide it through the heat and into the early signs of fall in great shape. Thank you for your support, patience, and respect for the hard work of our team.

See you out on the course.

RED, WHITE & BLUE

Couples Tournament

Small but Mighty: WNHGA Shines at Valley Hi Season Finale

Congratulations to our “small and mighty” WNHGA team for a fantastic showing at the Valley Hi season finale, where they proudly earned a third-place finish!

Decked out in patriotic red, white, and blue, Rhonda Craig came through with clutch putting—sinking net birdies—while partner Christy Frank delivered her signature steady performance, even adding a gross birdie to the scorecard. The duo of Kathy Cockayne and Jennie Fuller brought their A-game as well, stacking up points with net pars and birdies across five holes.

Nancy Little and Cindy Ciboch found their rhythm on the greens, mastering the course with precise putting that propelled them ahead of the home team and helped lock in the team’s strong finish.

In the Captain’s Flight, Cathy Maciel stole the spotlight with pinpoint drives and a red-hot putter, carding net birdie after net birdie. Her partner, Melissa Krebill, captured the moment perfectly, saying, “It never gets old… golf is fun!”

Way to represent, ladies! Your teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill made us proud.

August’s Tip of the Month Uncommon Experiences

Do you think we are aware on some subconscious level when the most important moments of our lives happen? Or do they take on more and more significance as time passes because the impact of that moment becomes more and more apparent? Did I really know that my wife was the one when she walked through the door of the restaurant on our first date? I’d like to believe I did but perhaps it only seems so obvious years down the road. Either way, reflecting on those truly most important moments can make you realize how fortunate you are. One of the many great things about golf is that the game can be a vehicle for moments that change the lives of many people.

On a recent Monday off I went to play a newly reopened 9-hole course called Campus Commons in Sacramento. On a sidenote, our former greenskeeper Kurtis Wolford, has overseen the grow-in and conditioning of the course and it is spectacular. Once upon a time I was a shy and out-of-his-comfort-zone 20 year-old looking for a job and was lucky enough to get one at Campus Commons, starting as a marshal who would monitor the course, pace of play, wash carts, etc. Little did I know that getting that job would mark a turning point in my life. The man who trained me my first days there would wind up becoming my best friend and one of my groomsmen in my wedding 11 years later. I made many other friends, met and lost girlfriends, even gave my first lessons all as the result of getting a job at this little course.

crooked. But it really did have good bones: the setting, right on the American River, was actually quite beautiful; the holes, 7 par 3’s and 2 drivable par 4’s, made good use of the land and forced interesting strategic decisions. And though many would dismiss it as an executive course, it was far from easy.

Anything under par was really a great score and its 7th hole even made the Sacramento Bee’s list of the 18 toughest holes in Sacramento. The hole really defied description with the American River on the left and a stand of cottonwood trees overhanging the right side of the hole so much that a normal straight iron simply could not be played. A player either had to hit a left-to-right curving shot or a low punch shot that would run a high percentage of the 170 yards the hole measured. No great round was safe until that shot was played safely and many a men’s club Sunday tournament was won or lost in that moment.

The last time number seven or any other hole was played at Campus Commons, at least that version of it, was August 31st, 2021. The Core of Engineers met with Sacramento County and decided that work on the riverbanks was needed to help control the flood plain and limit future erosion. The County used the opportunity to clean house and improve the golf course from its foundation. A new architect was brought in and with it a new routing, par, and playing style. Now all par 3’s, the longest measuring at 185 yards, the new version of the course makes even better use of the land. The standout hole is the new 3rd which plays south and over the corner of the river. As you can see below, it’s sort of like our 2nd hole on the River Course in reverse.

It wasn’t well-conditioned. It wasn’t well or even legitimately ran, its owners notoriously neglectful and at times downright

The third hole and every other hole are completely without

bunkers. The course is even without substantial rough and the green complexes and surrounding contours create an effect common among the world’s best courses: it is very playable for beginners and higher handicappers while providing a more nuanced challenge for great players. There are contours that act as a double-edged sword; a slope that can really help feed balls close to tough pin locations can simultaneously punish a player for missing on the wrong side of that very same contour.

Being out at Campus Commons, a 9-hole facility with no driving range and a small putting green, was a crash course in how to coach the game with limited resources. It wasn’t quite making something out of nothing but it certainly was a far cry from the wonderful practice facilities I get to coach at here at Woodbridge. If I seem grateful to be here now it is because I truly am but I also believe that I would not have been as ready for the wonderful position I currently enjoy without cutting my teeth throughout my 20’s. For all the great times, mistakes, and lessons learned, it is fun to look back and appreciate the path that got me here. Thank you for taking a trip down memory lane with me and I hope you enjoyed reading about a place I hold dear. If you’re feeling down in the dumps, don’t despair. Perhaps your next memorable moment is around the corner.

Want to discuss the state of your game? Feel free to reach out to me and we can get you back on the path to great golf!

WOMEN’S GOLF UPDATE

July: Great Weather, Great Golf

July’s unexpectedly cool temperatures encouraged strong participation from our 18-Holers, making for a month full of fun and great play.

We kicked off the month with Charity Day, raising $835 for the Lodi Loel Senior Center. Thank you, ladies, for your generosity—these funds will help support their Meals on Wheels program.

Next up was our annual Intra-Club match: Pat’s Patriots vs. Patty’s Stars. The teams played a spirited match play format, including nine holes on the Lake Course. In a close finish, Pat’s Patriots edged out the Stars by 3½ points. A big thank you to our team captains—Pat Kishida (Patriots) and Patty Anderson (Stars)—for organizing a fantastic day of golf and camaraderie. Thanks also to Chef Matt and the dining staff for a delicious lunch and excellent service.

Team Play wraps up soon. We’re heading to Turlock on July 31, followed by a final match at Spring Creek in August. We’ll need a strong finish to bring home the trophy once again!

We’re also excited to announce the return of the Carmon Cup, a prestigious tournament for captains and co-captains from 36 country clubs. Representing Woodbridge this year are Kim D’Angelo and Laura Reeves, who will compete at Serrano Country Club in August. Good luck, ladies—we’re cheering for you!

49er Update

It’s hard to believe July is already behind us! The Fore Tee Niners have been making the most of this gorgeous summer weather with plenty of time on the course.

On July 3rd, the group enjoyed a scramble format, with the winning team of Shannon Hagen, Barb Parejo, Rhonda Craig, and Donna Aarons taking home the top prize.

String Theory on July 10th was a big hit, as always—after all, who doesn’t appreciate a little help getting out of trouble on the course? Kathy Cockayne claimed first place, with Rhonda Craig and Donna Aarons close behind.

Best Ball on the River Course on July 17th proved to be a challenge. The team of Anne Weisenberg, Dora Shoemaker, Julie Scorpazzi, and Donna Aarons rose to the occasion, finishing in first place.

Championship play kicked off on July 24th, with competitors tackling all three nines. The leaderboard saw plenty of movement, but when the dust settled, Kathy Cockayne emerged as the Grand Net Champion, finishing 5 under par with an impressive combined score of 103. Donna Aarons followed in second place at 106 (2 under par), while Shannon Hagen took third with a score of 112. Shannon also claimed the title of Gross Champion for the 9-Hole Championship.

Rounding out the top net finishers were Jackie Katzakian (4th), Jennie Fuller (5th), and Julie Scorpazzi (6th).

Looking ahead to August, we’re excited for another month of fun golf! Upcoming formats include Best Ball, “3 Clubs & a Putter,” Scramble, and Stroke Play.

We hope to see many of you out on the course!
