13-Year Member, Golfer & Grill Master... Stephen Carillo MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:

If you’ve spent any time around the Clubhouse or on the course, chances are you’ve crossed paths with longtime member Stephen Carillo. Known for his easygoing nature, sense of humor, and generous spirit, Stephen has been a part of the Woodbridge family for more than 13 years.

Originally introduced to the Club by his friend JP Badel after a departure from Brookside, Stephen quickly made Woodbridge his home away from home. Whether he’s out on the course or relaxing with a drink and a friendly game of dice, he’s all about enjoying life and making connections.

This month, we sat down with Stephen for a quick Q\&A to learn more about what makes him tick.

Q&A with Stephen Carillo

How long have you been a member at Woodbridge? Thirteen years and counting!

What brought you to the Club originally?

A friend of mine, JP Badel, had recently joined after leaving Brookside and encouraged me to check it out.

What’s your favorite way to spend time here?

Golfing, hanging out with friends, enjoying a drink, and rolling dice.

What’s your go-to post-round meal or drink?

A burger with sweet potato fries—though sadly, we don’t have those on the menu—and a Jameson Black Barrel.

Any proud moments on the course?

Surviving a bee sting on Vineyard 9! That was a memorable one.

— Yes it was! That was the first time I’ve seen an ambulance on the golf course! We’re so thankful you were OK! — Kristine

What’s your current handicap or your goal for the season?

I’m at an 8 right now, but my goal is just to keep playing year-round and not worry too much about the number.

Who’s your favorite person to golf with?

There are way too many to name just one—I’ve been lucky to have great golf buddies over the years.

Tell us a fun fact most members don’t know about you.

I love to cook, both at home and for large events. Cooking for the amazing Woodbridge staff at the Summer BBQ was such a rewarding experience, and I enjoyed every minute of it— especially seeing how much others enjoyed it too.

— We do love it when you BBQ for us! Thank you! — Kristine

Don’t take things too seriously—just enjoy yourself. A lot of people would love to be a member here but can’t, so appreciate it!

How do you spend time outside the Club?

Watching my grandkids play sports, gardening, mowing lawns, and fixing things around the house.

What advice would you give a new member?

Don’t take things too seriously—just enjoy yourself. A lot of people would love to be a member here but can’t, so appreciate it!

Do you have a favorite hole on the course?

All of them—and depending on the day, that includes the ones I like least, too.

Who inspires you—on or off the course?

My family, especially my wife, Leanne. We’ve been married for almost 40 years, and she’s been my best friend throughout it all. Her support has inspired me both professionally and personally.

Do you play other sports or enjoy any hobbies? Not anymore—unless you count dice as a sport!

July’s Tip of the Month Cause or Effect? Understanding What’s Really Hapening in Your Golf Swing

One of the most common conversations I have with students and members centers around what they think is happening in their golf swings. Typically, their observations focus on the most visible or noticeable flaw—what they or their playing partners see during a round. More often than not, however, what they’re noticing is the effect of an issue rather than the cause.

Renowned instructor Sean Foley once said, “What golfers see as the problem is usually the athlete inside of them fixing the problem.” In other words, what looks like a swing flaw may actually be the body’s way of compensating for a deeper issue. With that in mind, let’s explore a few common examples that may resonate with you.

Early Extension: The Real Culprit Behind a Common Flaw

What It Looks Like:

Early extension occurs when a player’s hips move toward the ball during the downswing, causing them to “stand up” through impact. This motion reduces space for the arms and hands, often leading to a high handle position and compromised strike quality.

What Causes It:

The most frequent root cause is a steep transition at the top of the swing. When the club gets too vertical, players instinctively move their hips forward to make space for the club to come through. If they didn’t, they’d either hit far behind the ball or make contact on the toe.

Even elite players aren’t immune— former World No. 1 Jason Day dealt with early extension. For him, it was a necessary compensation for a steep downswing. However, the high-speed nature of his swing combined with these compensatory moves led to significant back issues. Working with coach Chris Como, Jason developed a deeper backswing turn and shallower transition, which reduced his need to early extend. Today, he’s back to playing excellent golf—and doing it pain-free.

Before: Limited turn, steep in transition

After: Deeper turn, shallower downswing

Over-the-Top and Runaway Paths: What They Really Mean

Over-the-Top:

Perhaps the most commonly heard swing diagnosis, “coming over the top” refers to a downswing path that travels too far to the left (for right-handed players). This often stems from an open clubface. Rather than learning to square the face—by improving grip or releasing the club—players subconsciously swing left in a desperate attempt to avoid a miss to the right. Unfortunately, this only leads to weak slices and loss of distance.

Another reason players swing over the top is to guarantee ball-first contact. While this might lead to more solid ground strikes, it introduces significant directional issues—typically shots that start left and either stay left or fade right.

Runaway Paths:

On the opposite end of the spectrum is a less common but equally troublesome issue: a swing path that goes excessively to the right. Termed a "runaway path" by coach EA Tischler, this typically occurs in better players whose clubface remains too closed throughout the swing. Their instincts push them to rotate early with the lower body, leaving the club trapped behind. The result? Pushes, snap hooks, and the dreaded two-way miss.

“What

golfers see as the problem is usually the athlete inside of them fixing the problem.”

— Sean Foley

The Key Lesson: Focus on the Clubface First

Whether it’s over-the-top or runaway path, both are effects—not causes. In both cases, the real issue lies with the clubface. In my 12 years of coaching, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern:

• Higher-handicap players tend to associate direction with swing path.

• Better players understand that direction is primarily controlled by the clubface.

Remember: the clubface controls the ball’s starting direction. Until we control that, it’s impossible to control where the ball ends up.

Ready to Find the True Cause?

These are just a few examples of common swing patterns that are often misunderstood. If you’re unsure what’s happening in your swing—or tired of fighting two-way misses—the first step is identifying the real cause.

Stop by the Pro Shop or reach out to schedule a swing evaluation. Together, we’ll get to the bottom of your swing and help you play your best golf yet.

WNHGA Woodbridge Winners: Summer Highlights & Triumphs

The WNHGA Woodbridge Winners continue to live up to their name this season, making impressive showings across a series of competitions, invitationals, and qualifiers. Here’s a round-up of the team’s outstanding efforts and accomplishments.

May

29–30:

Tournament of Champions Qualifier

Despite the heat, the WNHGA TOC qualifier at Woodbridge was a huge success, thanks to the quick coordination of the Pro Shop staff—special thanks to Teresa, Zach, Carson, and John! Congratulations to all the competitors, including Kathy Cockayne, Melissa Krebill, Patty Kooyman, Sharon Morgan, and Nancy Little, for braving the high temps.

Woodbridge will proudly be represented by four competitors at the WNHGA Tournament of Champions on Aug 28:

• Christy Frank – TOC Champion

• Shannon Hagen – Flight 1 Champion

• Anne Weisenberg – Flight 2 Champion

• Cindy Ciboch – Flight 3 Champion

June: Hosting & Competing at Woodbridge and Yolo Flyers

In early June, Woodbridge hosted a spirited match, with Nicole setting the tone and Meg McKenzie leading the hospitality efforts. Carol Pierovich added her signature enthusiasm, and our volunteer markers—Sharon Ceresa, Ginny Pelton, and Sharon Morgan—helped the event run seamlessly.

On the course:

• Christy Frank and Kathy Cockayne added to Woodbridge’s point lead

• Shannon Hagen and Cindy Ciboch continued their winning streak

• Rhonda Craig and Jennie Fuller each contributed valuable points

• Anne Weisenberg and Patty Kooyman rounded out the scoring with solid play

At Yolo Flyers, Shannon Hagen boosted her par total, while Cindy Ciboch and Melissa Krebill strategically added more points to the team’s overall performance. The season’s momentum was building—and the best was yet to come.

WNHGA Invitationals: Creativity, Camaraderie & Competition

Woodbridge was well represented in Invitationals across the region this summer:

• “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”: Cindy Ciboch secured a 2nd place finish

• Elk Grove Invitational: Cindy followed up with a 3rd place in her flight

• Brookside Invitational: Woodbridge showed up in force to support Nancy Little, who placed 3rd in her flight. Teammates included Rhonda Craig, Shannon Hagen, Melissa Krebill, Kathy Cockayne, Cindy Ciboch, and Carol Pierovich

• North Ridge Invitational: “Boot Scootin’ Bogey” was the theme, and the Woodbridge ladies brought both the flair and the finesse. Thanks to Rhonda Craig’s creative costumes, the team stood out—on and off the course.

Highlights included:

• Shannon Hagen – Showcased powerful drives

• Nancy Little – Put her short game to work with precision putting

• Cindy Ciboch – Took home the accuracy award with a drive just 3.5 inches from the fairway marker!

• Cathy Maciel – Secured a 3rd place finish in her flight

And yes—the whole team can now proudly say they’ve mastered the Boot Scootin’ Boogie!

A Victory at Rancho Murieta!

In a thrilling display of teamwork and skill, the WNHGA Woodbridge Winners triumphed at Rancho Murieta! Battling sand traps, heat, and even rattlesnakes, the ladies emerged victorious on the challenging course.

Match Recap:

Flight 1 – Christy Frank and Rhonda Craig led the charge, earning 6 points

Flight 2 – Shannon Hagen and Kathy Cockayne added 5.5 points

Flight 3 – Jennie Fuller and Nancy Little topped it off with 6.5 points

Captains Flight – Cathy Maciel and Melissa Krebill anchored the team as they now prepare for the final match at Valley Hi

Congratulations to all for an outstanding performance!

The Season Continues

With each competition, the WNHGA Woodbridge Winners prove themselves not only skilled but spirited. From pointwinning performances to unforgettable invitationals, the ladies are making their mark across Northern California—and having a blast doing it.

Stay tuned—there’s more excitement (and more wins!) to come.
