Sawmilling Oak with the Wood-Mizer LX50 in the Netherlands
In the charming Dutch village of Lutten, Bob Otten lives and breathes his craft at The Otten Sawmill. For Bob, nothing compares to the beauty andstrengthofoak.
He laughs, "Some people just can’t stay indoors... I’m definitely one of them!" Working outdoors, turning sturdy logs into timeless barns and rustic tables, is what makes him truly happy.
Author: Betty Morsinkhof Foto: Boyd Winters
When you visit the Otten farm, the first thing you notice is the solid oak hay barn, home to graceful fallow deer and free-range chickens. “Oak is the most beautiful wood in the world,” Bob says. “It’s warm, luxurious, and it lasts for generations. Sure, it’s not cheap, but those who choose oak know its worth.”
ThePathtoWoodworking
Bob didn’t start out as a sawyer. He was trained as a gardener, but his father, an experienced forester, quickly recognized Bob’s knack for working with wood. “He insisted we work together for at least a year. That’s how I ended up splitting my week between the forest and the sawmill. Once you
discover a passion for wood, you never let it go,” Bobsmiles.
FamilyBusinessandPassion
The Otten Sawmill is a real family affair. Bob’s wife, Gerwine, is always nearby, handling paperwork, designing pamphlets, and sharing their story on
social media. This gives Bob the freedom to do what he loves most: crafting with oak, from felling the treestoraisingthebarns.
“Every step, from logging to building, I want to do myself,” he says. For that, he needed a sawmill he could trust. “There are different brands, but Wood-
Mizerstoodoutforitsquality,”Bobexplains.“TheLX50 is the perfect fit for what we do. It’s precise and easy to use—even without hydraulics, it handles the logs just fine. If we grow bigger, we’ll consider a more powerful model, butfornow,it’sjustright.”
CraftingwithPurpose
Bob learned everything hands-on from his father and cherishes every project. He builds tables, fences, barns, and traditional roof trusses—all with old-school mortise and tenon joints. “That’s how you build with wood,” he says with pride. “It’s great to see more people choosing oak for modern homes as well as historicrestorations.”
He especially enjoys helping people give a second life tooldtreesfromtheirgardens—transformingtheminto something unique, like a handcrafted table. “That’s the work that excites me most. Every project is a new challenge, andIloveit,”Bobsays.
LookingtotheFuture
At Otten Sawmill, each project is a collaboration. “People come to us with an idea, and together we bring it to life. Often, the barn is ready in just a day or two. Looking back at the finished work always fills me with pride.”
As Wood-Mizer continues to innovate, introducing new models like the LX50START and LX50SUPER, Bob is excited for what the future holds. But for now, he’s happy doing what he loves—working with his hands, outdoors, and helping others realize their dreams in oak.
How Wood Becomes a Treasure in Austria
Sawmilling with the Wood-Mizer
LT15WIDE
For Simon Radauer, working with wood runs in the family. At their small tree care company in Austria, turninglogsintosomethingspecialismorethanjust a business—it’s a passion. And with the WoodMizer LT15WIDE sawmill, Simon and his family have found new ways to turn challenges into opportunities.
“My uncle has had a Wood-Mizer sawmill for about 20 years. I was always fascinated by how it worked,” Simon recalls. “A few years ago, I suggested we get a new one, because we often come across rare, valuable logs—like oak and walnut. That’s when we decided to invest in the LT15WIDE.”
GainingIndependencewiththeRightMachine
With the new sawmill, Simon can handle even the biggest logs himself, right at home. “Now I can mill the wood right here and don’t have to rely on subcontractors. That makes all the difference,” he explains. “It’s tough to sell valuable timber as whole logs, but once we mill it into boards, we can get a muchbetterprice—sometimestentimesmore!”
Simon also offers custom milling for clients, turning their special logs into unique boards and beams. The LT15WIDE’s wide sawhead means he can handle logs up to 90 cm across, which is perfect for the beautiful, big timbers that come through their yard. “I love how versatile and compact the sawmill is—itfitsourneedsperfectly.”
SimpleOperation,PreciseResults
The sawmill is easy to use, even with big jobs. “The SW10 Setworks is a real game-changer,” Simon says. “I just set the thickness I want, and the machine does the rest. It saves so much time and takes the guesswork out of cutting. Whether I need boards all the same thickness or different sizes, it’s simple.”
Quality matters to Simon, so he sticks with WoodMizer blades. “They’re excellent, and if one breaks, it’s replaced right away. The sharpening service is great too. We’re really happy with the support we getfromWood-Mizer.”
LookingAheadwithConfidence
For the Radauer family, the LT15WIDE has become much more than just a tool—it’s helped them grow their business and find new joy in working with wood. “We’re delighted with our sawmill. It’s easy to handle, gives us great results, and the customer service team is always there when we need it. I couldn’taskformore,”Simonsayswithasmile.
ON THE FARM
On the peaceful banks of the Elbe River lies Barnitz, a small German village where the Piehl family farm has thrivedforfourgenerations.ForAndreasPiehl, thelandis not just his livelihood — it’s his heritage, his passion, and thefuturehe’sbuildingforhisfamily.
The Piehl farm has always been bustling with life: green meadows, fields of maize and rapeseed, a healthy herd of 280 cattle, and forests full of promise. Andreas, a trained agricultural specialist, grewupwatchinghisfathertendtotheselands.Yet, from early on, he dreamed of more — not just preserving tradition, but expanding the farm’s potentialandfindingnewwaystosupporthisfamily.
Everything changed the day Andreas discovered Wood-Mizer sawmills at a trade show Instantly, he
saw the opportunity: using their own timber to build and repair, and maybe even supply the local community Soon after, in 1996,Andreas bought his first LT40 gasoline sawmill and began offering mobile sawing services. With every board he cut, he was building something bigger — a new future for hisfamilyfarm.
When the Piehls acquired more land in 2003, Andreas’ vision took on new momentum. Almost every building on the farm was rebuilt or restored,
using wood from their own forest, cut with their own hands. The investment paid off — not just in savings, but in pride and independence. Sawmilling wasn’t just a side project anymore. It became an essentialpartofthefarm’sdailylife.
As demand grew, Andreas upgraded his equipment, choosing the powerful LT70 electric sawmill the very heart of the Wood-Mizer professional lineup. Suddenly, what used to be hours of hard work became smooth, efficient, and even enjoyable Logs were transformed into perfectly cut boards and beams at record speed, all with the accuracy and reliability Andreas could count on. The LT70’s advanced features — like high-speed hydraulics, programmable settings, and precision controls turned timber into opportunity.
Over time, the farm’s sawmilling business blossomed. After a storm left the woods littered with fallen trees, Andreas saw a new chance: he established Holzhandel AP, expanding into timber trading and custom milling. With the addition of the compact EG100 edger, the Piehls began producing decking boards and bespoke timber for local carpenters and private customers. The farm
became a hub not only for food, but also for quality wood products — a place where nothing went to waste, andeverylogfounditspurpose.
Today, the Piehl farm is a true family enterprise. Andreas works side by side with his wife Anja, their sons, and even his parents. Each member brings their hands and hearts to the business. Son Max is already learning the ropes, continuing the family’s commitmenttoagricultureandinnovation.
For Andreas, sawmilling has become much more than just another revenue stream. It’s a way to care for his land, support his neighbors, and create a sustainable future for the next generation. With Wood-Mizer machines at the core of his operation, the Piehl farm stands as a testament to the power of tradition, ingenuity, and family spirit — proving that with the right tools and a bold vision, any farm can growbeyonditsboundaries.
CABIN BUILDING
Building Shepherd Cabins in the French Alps with
Wood-Mizer Machines
High up in the French Alps, where life at 1900 meters can be as tough as it is beautiful, Aleksander Salicis has found his calling — turning local timber into cozy shepherd cabins and bespoke carpentry products for his mountain community.
“I started out helping a friend build a small cabin on the mountain. He needed somewhere to stay in the summer, to watch over his sheep,” Aleksander recalls. “It was hard work — I’ll never forget seeing the wooden frame I made with my Wood-Mizer LT40, being lifted by helicopter up the mountain. Thatwasaspecialmoment.”
What began as a one-off project grew into a family business, Salicis Charpente. Today, Aleksander builds cabins recognized and valued by shepherds across the region, all using local wood. “People appreciate these cabins because they’re made righthere, fromourowntimber,”hesayswithpride.
ReliableMachinesforMountainLife
Aleksander’s workshop is filled with trusted WoodMizer equipment. “I always recommend WoodMizer to other woodworkers,” he says. “For small
carpentry shops like mine, these machines are just perfect.” His LT40 sawmill is the backbone of the operation, especiallywithitshydraulicfunctionsand bed extension for long logs. “I used to work on sawmills without hydraulics and my back suffered,” he admits. “With the LT40, everything is faster, safer, andIcangetsomuchmoredoneinaday.”
To get the most value out of every log, Aleksander added the EG100 board edger. “Before, I had a lot of leftovers. Now, with the edger, even the smaller, uneven slabs get turned into useful timber. It really reduceswasteandaddsvalue,”heexplains.
He keeps his blades sharp and precise with WoodMizer’s BMS250 sharpener and BMT150 setter “If you work with softwoods like I do, sharp blades are everything Otherwise, you lose time and risk breakingthem,”henotes.
TheHeartoftheWorkshop:MP360
But if there’s one machine that Aleksander can’t imagine working without, it’s the Wood-Mizer MP360planer/moulder.
“MP360 completely changed my workshop,” Aleksander says enthusiastically. “It takes up little space, doesn’t use much energy, and lets me offer my customers so much more. I can make grooved deck boards, special mortise-and-tenon joints, cladding with unique profiles, or perfectly squared timber — all with one machine! My clients love the variety, and I enjoy being able to say ‘yes’ to nearly anyrequest.”
He points out how easy it is to move from rough timber to a beautifully finished product. “With the MP360, I take my dried slabs straight from the kiln and turn them into flooring, cladding, beams, or whatever’s needed. The finish is always top-notch. Honestly, this machine makes me feel like I can do anything.”
Aleksander knows how important it is to deliver quality quickly. “Twenty years ago, people dried timber in the open air for months. Now, the kiln helps me dry the wood fast, and the MP360 does the rest. Only this way can I guarantee my clients the quality andspeedtheyexpect.”
LookingAhead
Aleksander’s relationship with Wood-Mizer goes back nearly a decade. “What I love about these machines is how versatile and reliable they are. They grow with you — as my business expanded, I could always count on Wood-Mizer to have the right solution,”hesays.
His business, Salicis Charpente, is tightly woven with his family’s life. “My wife runs a horse-riding school, and our clients often notice the timber work I do for the barns and stables. One thing leads to another, andnewprojectsappear!”
Looking to the future, Aleksander dreams of more automation and maybe even an industrial sawmilling line. “But whatever happens next, I know Wood-Mizerwillbepartofthejourney,”hesmiles.

Romanian Pallet Production
That Gives Back to the Forests
Rotil Prest, a Romanian woodworking company, is on a mission to restore valuable timber resources for future generations, nestled in the heart of a country with centuries-old woodworking traditions.
Located in Moldovita, Suceava County, amid the breathtaking landscapes of Bucovina, Rotil Prest has been in operation for over 30 years. At the helm of the business is Liviu Țiplic, an entrepreneur who unconventionally entered the woodworking industry.
TheJourneyBegins
"I don't have formal education in woodworking," Liviu Țiplic says with a smile. After finishing his studies in Belgium in 1992, he returned to Romania with the dream of creating a factory for electronic components.
"I envisioned an electronics company moving from Taiwan to Romania, but that never happened," he recalls. At that time, the country’s infrastructure wasn'tpreparedforsuchatechnologicalleap.
Driven by a strong desire to build a business, he began exploring other opportunities, and found
himself in Bucovina – a region with a long-standing tradition in woodworking. Here, in Moldovita, the center of Bucovina, there was once a large factory thathadbeenprocessingtimberforover130years.
"I immediately felt a connection to this place. I fell in love with the smell of sawn timber. The landscapes are beautiful, and the people are wonderful," explainsLiviuȚiplic."ThesewerethemainreasonsI becameattachedtothisarea."
The first logging operation took place outdoors, on a modest plot of land, using a cut-off saw and a makeshift dryer made from a fuel barrel. Since then, step by step, Rotil Prest has grown into a modern woodenpackagingfactory.
CustomProductManufacturing
Today, Rotil Prest specializes in producing custom wooden packaging, focusing on projects that requiremorecreativityandofferhigheraddedvalue.
“We manufacture all types of packaging, but we prefer non-standard pallets because, although they require more design work, they sell at a better price,”explainsLiviuȚiplic.
DiscoveringWood-Mizer
Liviu’s first encounter with Wood-Mizer took place more than ten years ago at a Wood-Mizer customer dayinSibiu, wheretheRomanianbranchisbased.
"I was invited to a meeting in Sibiu, where I was introduced to Wood-Mizer, and I decided to purchase the Wood-Mizer LT20 band sawmill," saysLiviuȚiplic.
The LT20 is part of Wood-Mizer's professional series, built around a patented design with a console-mounted saw head, full hydraulics, and a control panel with an electronic Setworks. LT20 mills are often chosen to start businesses and get users acquainted with the narrow band blade cutting technology, as they are easy to operate,
provide high-quality wood cuts, and are costeffective.
"ThiswasthefirstWood-MizersawmillIbought,and I was very satisfied — not just with the machine itself, but also with the service support. I always get excellent support, far better than from other equipment suppliers," says Liviu Țiplic. "That’s how IbecamealoyalWood-Mizercustomer."
PoweredbyWood-Mizer
His dedication to the brand runs so deep that he admits, "When I want to buy a new machine, the first place I go to is Wood-Mizer. The non-Wood-Mizer machines we use here are only because WoodMizer doesn’t make that type of equipment — that’s theonlyreason."
Today, Rotil Prest’s factory is fully equipped with Wood-Mizer machinery, from the powerful LT70 Heavy Duty sawmill to the multirip, planer/moulder, andblademaintenanceequipment.
CraftingCustomPallets
For example, the small HR115 horizontal resaw at Rotil Prest's handles the production of pallet boards with great efficiency The low cost of this resaw and its simple design allow the HR115 to effectively cut beams into pallet boards when there is a need for producing small batches of boards in various sizes.
The HR115 has a fixed saw head for horizontal cutting, while the material is fed and removed from thetables.
"Later, I bought the MR200 double-arbour multirip, which I am extremely happy with. I've used it numerous times to produce timber of various sizes, and I can confidently say it surpasses all expectations in terms of both product quality and functionality,"saysLiviuȚiplic.
The MR200 double-arbour multirip is a robust, durable machine that significantly increases productivity by quickly cutting beams into boards.
Each shaft can hold up to 12 circular saws, and with thehigh-qualityWood-Mizercarbide-tippedcircular blades, the MR200 can process up to 10 cubic meters of timber per hour This machine has proven its worth in industrial sawmill lines, as well as pallet production.
As part of its commitment to advanced woodworking, Rotil Prest also invested in the Wood-MizerMP360four-sideplaner/moulder.
"The Wood-Mizer four-side planer/moulder offers anexcellentprice-to-qualityratio,"saysLiviuȚiplic.
Recently, the company acquired the Wood-Mizer LT70 Heavy Duty sawmill, the most powerful model in Wood-Mizer's professional series. It has a high level of mechanization and automation, featuring a strong, multifunctional hydraulic system for handling logs, a computerized control for managing saw head functions (including a laser sight for indicate the cuts), and a built-in conveyor system for fast board removal. This sawmill uses a narrow band blade and therefore produces thin kerf of 2 mm thickness, which yields more timber and less sawdustfromeverylog.
“The LT70 Heavy Duty sawmill I chose is the version with a wider, 50 mm bandsaw blade. I tested different types of blades and noticed that the sawmill performs at a higher level when using the specific blade types recommended by the manufacturer.”
Wood-Mizer is one of the few sawmill manufacturers that also produces its own bandsaw blades, offering multiple blade series designed for variouswood-cuttingapplications.
GivingBacktoNature
For Liviu, woodworking is not just about production — it’s also about responsibility. Rotil Prest proudly
holds FSC certification and actively participates in reforestation.
“We must not only consume wood — we must also restore it,” Liviu says. In 2019, the company launched its first tree-planting event, where employees planted 3,500 saplings. Three years later, together with a client company, they planted another7,000treeswiththehelpof140volunteers.
“These are small steps, but they matter,” Liviu notes.“We’replantingthefuture,quiteliterally.”
As the industry evolves, so does Rotil Prest. Liviu continues to follow Wood-Mizer’s innovations closely, looking for the next improvement, the next opportunity “I’malwaysopentoprogress,”hesays.

When Work and Hobby Become One:
The Story of a Swedish Carpentry Workshop
"Working with your hobby allows for endless hours of enjoyment. I am living the dream," says Rasmus Ström,theheartandsoulofÄdelsnickaren(TheFine Carpenter) in Falköping, Sweden. For Rasmus, woodworking is more than just a job—it’s a lifelong passionthatnowdefineshiseverydaylife.
TurningPassionintoaProfession Rasmus’s love for carpentry began early, inspired by the magic of turning raw wood into something beautiful. After graduating from a woodcraft design high school, he spent twelve years as a building custodian and technician before deciding to pursue his true calling. He founded Ädelsnickaren, a workshop dedicated to custom carpentry, where everyprojectisanewadventureincreativity.
“In my woodcraft design class, I started as the only student. Eventually, three more joined, which just
showed there’s real demand for unique, high-quality woodwork—even if people didn’t realize it at the time,”Rasmusrecalls.
FindingJoyinEveryPieceofWood
What drives Rasmus is the endless potential he sees in each log. “The best part of working with wood is the scent, the unique grain, and the way something ordinary can become extraordinary with a bit of imagination,” he shares. “Manual work is deeply satisfying—these are hours filled with focus andjoy.”
His enthusiasm is infectious: “More and more people today appreciate the pleasure of working with your hands. I’m lucky to spend my days doing whatIlovemost.”
TheRightToolsfortheDream
At the heart of Rasmus’s workshop is the WoodMizer MP260 planer/moulder—a machine he calls indispensable. “With the MP260, I can do so many jobs that used to require several bulky machines. It’s compact, efficient, and lets me switch quickly fromplaningtomouldingorcutting,”heexplains.
Rasmus uses the MP260 for everything from tongue-and-groove flooring and custom siding to furniture parts and decorative edgings. “For flooring planks—what we call råspont in Sweden—I get a perfect fit and finish, exactly to my client’s wishes,” hesays.
Aclean and safe workshop is essential, so Rasmus added Wood-Mizer’s chip extractor system, which
keeps the air fresh and the workspace tidy. “It’s more powerful than others I’ve tried—a real upgrade,”henotes.
When it comes to large wood slabs for tables and benches, Rasmus teams upwithTrueNorthInterior and relies on the Wood-Mizer MB200 SlabMizer for moulding and sanding large surfaces. “It’s ideal for makingsolidwoodfurniture,”hesays.
BuildingDreams,OneProjectataTime
For Rasmus, working with wood goes beyond the workshop. “In Sweden, wood is the foundation of our homes, and my dream is to one day build my
own timber house. Carpentry isn’t just my profession—it’smywayoflife.”
At Ädelsnickaren, every project is a reminder that work can be a source of true joy—especially when it starts as a hobby and grows into something much bigger.
