Convexity is being increasingly recognized as a solution to common pouching problems, and in 2021 an international consensus group defined 5 clinically relevant characteristics of convex barriers. However, we currently lack objective standards by which these characteristics can be measured and reported, and development of such standards is essential for clinicians trying to select the best product for a particular patient. WOCN therefore convened a transdisciplinary consensus conference involving ostomy product engineers and product specialists as well as clinical experts, with the goal of developing guidelines for measurement and reporting relative to the 5 previously defined characteristics; this session will provide a report on the process, outcomes, and clinical implications of that conference.

While many skin eruptions are not life threatening, there are inflammatory, infectious, and drug related skin eruptions that can result in high morbidity or even mortality. Awareness of the clinical features associated with these skin eruptions can assist with early identification. As a result of early identification, appropriate consults and referrals can be made to ensure the timely initiation of therapy that can protect against lasting dysfunction or even death. Clinicians should feel confident in their ability to assess for red flags suggesting a dermatologic emergency. In this session, attendees will learn how to assess, develop differential diagnosis and identify when patients need an emergent consultation with dermatology. An overview of the management of select inflammatory, infectious and drug related skin eruptions will be covered.

Radical Cystectomy with urinary diversion carries a high risk of readmission and complications, perhaps the highest in all urologic procedures. Urology programs continue to search for successful care pathways that enhance successful recovery after surgery. Identifying key components of a standardized bladder cancer care program can lead to improved patient outcomes and quality of life. ERAS or Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs attempt to standardized care to improve outcomes. In-home monitoring, where available, can help prevent readmission and serious morbidity. This session will describe the importance of a team based approach to patients planning radical cystectomy with urinary diversion starting in the preoperative period, including a standardized care pathway perioperatively and a novel in-home monitoring program during the recovery phase at home. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of each team member in this improved care pathway.

In the ever-evolving landscape of our practice as WOC nurses, evidence-based approaches are our guiding stars. But what happens when these theories meet real-world scenarios? Come and learn as we delve into the fascinating journey of international stoma care nurses who dared to put the theory to the test.
Their mission? To objectively compare clinical outcomes of flat and convex skin barriers. Their goal? To capture performance differences and the benefits of embracing convexity earlier in the acute post-operative phase.
Armed with data from 213 evaluations, spanning across ten countries, an insights and analytics specialist, and a WOC nurse dissect the results. The session will center on examining new real-world evidence, the methodology, and subsequent gained insights regarding the occurrence of complications of ostomy pouching systems with respect to leakage and the development of peristomal skin complications (PSCs), particularly in the hospital setting immediately following ostomy creation surgery.
Using a retrospective cohort study design, a team of WOC nurses from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian and Shadyside campuses reviewed and extracted data from 214 consecutive electronic medical records for patients admitted to the hospital for stoma-creation surgery. Analysis of the data demonstrated that significant differences in the risk of leakage are observed based on ostomy barrier selection. Therefore, the choice of the ostomy barrier in the immediate postoperative period is critical in setting a patient up for success.
Session includes afternoon refreshments.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD), a progressive atherosclerotic disease in which one or more peripheral arteries, typically in the lower limbs, are partially or completely obstructed afflicts 8-10 million people in the United States.
Each year, approximately 150,000 leg amputations are performed in the United States and residents of rural areas, Black and Native American people and those of low socioeconomic status are at the highest risk of amputation.
Yet many Americans — even some clinicians — remain unaware of the disease and its devastating impact on individuals, their families and communities.
Because this preventable, treatable condition causes so much unnecessary suffering and death, the American Heart Association and more than 70 representatives from over 25 organizations committed to improving vascular health outcomes by developing a PAD National Action Plan
Attendees will discover how they can participate in the PAD National Action Plan. This session will also provide an overview of the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and management of PAD. Due to PAD disproportionately impacting some communities the AHA has compiled an amputation heat map for learners to explore the impact of PAD in their own communities.

Support garments and apparel are used for the management of body complications, appearance, and function. The psychological impact of stoma formation includes feelings of a loss of self-control and altered body image. Ostomates use support garments as part of the process of adjusting to altered body image and a redefining of themselves. Support garments can also be used to prevent stomal complications such as parastomal hernias. Evidence exists that shows the use of support garments are associated with psychological adjustment. Ostomates need information and support when choosing support garments.

www.altrazeal.com
Altrazeal is an innovative, transforming powder dressing used in the treatment of surgical, acute, and chronic wounds that may be left on the wound for up to 30 days. Its granules aggregate upon hydration with saline to form a moist, oxygen permeable film that contours to and seals the entire wound surface, helps manage exudate and prevents exogenous bacteria from entering the wound. Altrazeal’s extended wear time not only reduces exposure to infection and allows the wound bed to heal undisturbed by reducing dressing changes, but also significantly reduces medical labor utilization and material costs for our users. Once the wound heals, the product flakes off. If the wound does not heal completely before a necessary dressing change, the non-adhesive dressing can be removed easily by saturating with saline and lifting off with a pair of forceps. Altrazeal is being successfully used in a wide range of traumatic, surgical and chronic wounds, including lacerations, avulsions, skin tears, surgical incisions and excisions, graft sites, dehiscence, second degree burns, as well as pressure sores, diabetic foot, venous stasis and other leg and decubitus ulcers.

Get Ready for Something New. Well, if you had told any of us five years ago that we would be selling ostomy appliances, none of us would’ve believed you. But then life presented some challenging scenarios and it seemed to us that things could be better. It started slowly, with one nurse recognizing the problem and wondering why so many patients were suffering with poorly fitting ostomies. Through fate or good luck, she connected with three surgeons who were similarly frustrated with the available options for their patients in need. And just like that, a team was born. We are a nurse, three surgeons, an MIT grad, and an engineer, united to create products for the patients who need them most. We’ve worked together to bring a novel ostomy appliance to the market, designed to work around difficult anatomic challenges. We are here, at your service, ready to help you find exactly the right products to meet theunique needs of your patients.

All PolyMem dressings effectively cleanse, fill, absorb and moisten wounds throughout the healing continuum. When you use PolyMem dressings, you eliminate the need to stock most other wound care products on your shelves, including: alginates, hydrogels, hydrocolloids, foams and much more! Control Inflammation, Reduce Pain, Increase Healing...That’s the power of PolyMem® PolyMem dressings debride and constantly cleanse the wound bed, while also managing exudate. The wound bed will not be disturbed during dressing changes because PolyMem dressings are non-adherent. PolyMem also stimulates healing by drawing fluid (including nutrition and growth factors) to the wound. PolyMem dressings are specifically designed to control inflammation to where it is needed — in the wound. This helps reduce swelling and pain which helps reduce the risk of infection which support the healing process.

Kerecis Omega3 MariGen is a fish-skin graft that is homologous to human skin and is used for tissue regeneration. Kerecis Omega3 MariGen is FDA indicated for multiple clinical applications.
Because there is no risk of a viral-disease transfer from Atlantic cod to humans, the fish skin needs only mild processing for medical use and maintains its natural structure and elements, including Omega3 fatty acids.
When grafted onto damaged human tissue such as a burn or a wound, the fish-skin graft recruits the body’s own cells, supporting the body’s own ability to regenerate. The fish skin is a natural microbial barrier.
The superior clinical and economical performance of Kerecis Omega3 MariGen has been demonstrated in two nonindustry funded, double-blind, randomized clinical trials and in numerous other clinical studies.

NorthShore Care Supply, which manufactures the leading brand of extreme absorbency adult diapers and incontinence supplies (defined as being up to 3 times the absorbency of other brands that hold large marketshare), was recognized by Newsweek four years in a row as one of the Best Online Shops of 2023, ranking number one in 2023 in the Medical Supplies category, surpassing leading brands such as CVS, Walgreens, RiteAid, and AllegroMedical. Since 2002, NorthShore’s mission has been to improve the quality-oflife for individuals with incontinence and their caregivers. The company’s Flagship brands of products (MegaMax, GoSupreme, DynaDry, MagicSorb Air, DoubleStop for Men, and others) are designed to help individuals and their caregivers in managing heavier urinary and bowel incontinence. Several thousand 5-star customer reviews state that NorthShore products give adults more confidence and better sleep. Family caregivers also notice more sleep and fewer nighttime changes. Many studies show that seniors who sleep up to eight hours have a decreased risk of chronic diseases (Source: https://www.prb.org/resources/ new-evidence-on-sleeps-role-in-aging-and-chronic-disease/).
Maintaining healthy skin is also a top concern for individuals who wear adult briefs, and NorthShore delivers. Based on thousands of NorthShore’s consumer customers with heavy to total incontinence who have experienced sound skin health while sleeping through the night over the years, NorthShore recognized that proving similar clinical outcomes in the senior living facility and long-term care settings was needed. So, in 2022, NorthShore conducted a number of clinical case studies, whose outcomes proved the efficacy of NorthShore products at senior care facilities. Executive Summary of trials using NorthShore’s 12-hour and 8-hour extreme absorbency adult incontinence products: There were 99.3% of skin health assessments recorded as ‘healthy, no irritation’ (5-level assessment scale); an 82% reduction in number of overnight changes; a five-fold reduction in interruptions of residents’ sleep; a 72% savings in clinical labor; and virtually no IAD or UTI (See Case Study details in the WOCNext 2023 Poster Hall or WOCNext 2023 ePosters: “Low incidence of IAD, UTI, and sleep interruptions with use of extreme absorbency, extended wear adult incontinence products in senior living facilities: A Case-Control Study”).
