2 22 YEAR IN REVIEW

Dear Colleagues,
2022 has been quite a year! The WOCN Society is ever-moving, ever-growing, and always trying to find innovative approaches to assist you in professional growth and education and of course, excellence in practice. The Board of Directors and I would like to extend our deepest appreciation for your support and participation within the Society, as well as for expressing great ideas to us. We have welcomed your feedback and consider it as we think about the work the Society has done and will continue to do in 2023. As we are now navigating the dynamic “new normal” post-pandemic, more than ever we must lean on one another for support, idea sharing, resource development, and more. The challenges we face as people, as nurses, and as WOC nurses are very real and change rapidly. The sense of the WOC Community of Opportunity™ within the Society for professional and personal support is stronger than ever and very real.
In 2022, as that Community, together we have progressed in programs and initiatives previously identified and we also provided some new. The Board of Directors, the committee chairs, and the committee members all have put in countless hours to bring you excellent opportunities this past year. The WOCNext® conference was stellar and while we all were not yet still together, the beginning of actually seeing people again in person was rejuvenating in itself! Re-emergence of in-person dialogue was rich. There is absolutely no replacement for this. I must thank all those members who worked to innovate, refresh, update, and develop programs, resources, and education, for it is they who provide the foundation of our Society.
As we look forward to 2023, we must also look back at our accomplishments. Thank you for your support of the WOCN Society and for helping to disseminate the good work that we do every single day!
Respectfully, Dea Kent, DNP, RN, NP-C, CWOCN WOCN Society PresidentIN-PERSON & ONLINE JUNE 5-8 FORT WORTH, TX

2022 was a productive year for the Journal of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing (JWOCN). Our official journal continued to be the preferred resource for cutting-edge research and reviews of the care and management of patients with wounds, ostomies, incontinence, and foot and nail care disorders. The 49th Volume of JWOCN contained many highimpact articles, including:
• Series of landmark articles on pressure injuries in the US looked at the unit-by-unit prevalence and preventive interventions used by nurses
• Opportunities for the WOC Nurse in response to new guidelines from pressure injury prevention from the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN)
• Series of articles defining the newest ICD-10-CM codes for various forms of Moisture Associated Skin Damage (MASD)
• Latest substantive updates to the Society’s Clinical Decision Support Tool, Compression for Lower Extremity Venous Disease and Lymphedema
• Best practice guidelines for the management of long-term suprapubic catheterization
• First population-level look at the epidemiology of ostomy surgery throughout the US
New additions this year included the first-ever Chinese language versions of JWOCN, and infographics and video abstracts from select articles summarizing complex and clinically relevant key points.
We look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the JWOCN in 2023!
The WOCTalk podcast channel continues to provide clinical experts, leaders, and passionate caregivers with the latest healthcare advances, industry news, and education in an easily digestible format.
Certain episodes of WOCTalk award Contact Hours; these episodes are identified under the “Available for CE” category on wocn.org/podcast. Once the last episode of the year is launched, our Contact Hour claiming system will open and you’ll be asked to identify the episodes you listened to and complete an evaluation. Following submission of the evaluation, you’ll receive a certificate of completion with the awarded Contact Hours.
The Continuing Education Center (CEC) is the place for the latest in WOC nursing educational courses. WOCN Society members have free access to education courses in the CEC.
WOCN works to shape legislation that protects and strengthens the profession of WOC care. WOCN is committed to advancing legislative activity that promotes the benefits of WOC nurse involvement related to pressure injuries, acute and chronic wounds, ostomy, and continence care. WOCN is actively engaged in state and federal public policy and advocacy efforts to help healthcare become economically viable and to promote the value of WOC nurses across all healthcare settings. Below are 2022 advocacy efforts we proudly participated in:
WOCN has successfully advocated for the inclusion of two important Congressional policy priorities in 2022. The Lymphedema Treatment Act and The Better Wound Care at Home Act were included in the last legislative vehicle to move in the 117th Congress and were signed into law. Both pieces of legislation have been WOCN advocacy priorities for several sessions of Congress and we are thrilled they will shortly be enacted. Both pieces of legislation have been WOCN advocacy priorities for several sessions of Congress and we are thrilled they will shortly be enacted. As a reminder, The Lymphedema Treatment Act would amend the Medicare statute to pay for compression garments, bandages, and supplies to reduce lymphedema-related swelling and prevent recurrence; The Better Wound Care at Home Act would put disposable durable medical equipment, such as the commonly used negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) device, on a level playing field with non-disposable NPWT devices giving home care providers more flexibility on how to treat their patients.
Thank you to all our members who have taken the time to reach out to their members of Congress to help push these bills over the finish line, your advocacy has paid off. Advocating for our profession and our patients is a priority for WOCN and we will continue to push for health policy objectives that achieve those goals.
In June 2022, WOCN sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) asking that they approve a new coding application to expand language for intermittent catheters. Often times patients are limited to what catheter they can use based on any number of factors, but our coding system for these devices does not meet the variety of products available to meet those patient needs. The coding application would expand the number of codes available for catheters threefold to give providers more flexibility to meet patient needs.
WOCN continued our conversations with CMS to push for Medicare coverage of supplies for spontaneous fistula. WOCN members expressed growing concern over the lack of access to supplies for patients who have nonsurgical and surgical-related fistula. These groups of patients are falling into a coverage gap that exists in post-acute, post-home care with access to supplies. This issue has been noted in patients both pediatric and adult and more information can be found in a recently updated White Paper prepared by WOCN.
In an effort to close this coverage gap, WOCN has continued working with stakeholders to engage CMS in a conversation about how to change coverage policy so patients have access to these important supplies. These ongoing conversations have revealed that a change in law will likely be needed and that a regulatory fix is not possible. WOCN will continue to examine solutions for this access to care in 2023.
WOCN members and other advocates have been working in several states across the U.S. to ensure that ostomy patients covered by Medicaid have access to the supplies they need. Many state Medicaid programs fail to provide adequate extended-wear ostomy products, which in many instances is well below even the Medicare standards. Thanks to the advocacy of WOCN members and others, 5 states have recently expanded their monthly allotment of products. WOCN and industry partners have successfully advocated for the following changes to state Medicaid programs:
• Rhode Island expanded access from 1/month to 40/month for 1-piece drainable flat/convex pouches with filter
• New Jersey expanded access from 1/month to 15/month for 1-piece drainable convex pouches without filter and ALL 2-piece barriers
• Kentucky now covers 1-piece flat drainable pouches with filter
• Mississippi now covers 1-piece drainable (flat/convex) pouches with filter (10/month)
• Florida now covers 1-piece drainable (flat/convex) pouches with filter Collaborations. United Voice. Forward Movement. WOCN continues to seek organizations and coalitions that have a likeminded focus to support our practice and the care of our patients. Over the last year, WOCN has:
• Continued a strong relationship with the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders and the Access to Care Coalition. These groups actively pursue regulatory concerns that impact supplies for our patients. WOCN is included in comments and appeals related to WOC supplies.
• Worked closely with the United Ostomy Associations of America, Inc. (UOAA). UOAA has initiated an Ostomy Quality Campaign, with the Ostomy and Continent Diversion Patient Bill of Rights being a campaign foundation. WOCN has been an ardent supporter of the Patient Bill of Rights and encourages all WOC nurses to utilize this document in their everyday practice. Elements of the Patient Bill of Rights, supported by validation in the JWOCN Article titled, “Ostomy and Continent Diversion Patient Bill of Rights: Research Validations of Standards of Care,” are a framework for justifying quality care and access to WOC nurses who care for ostomy patients.
• Worked with UOAA for an educational campaign that normalizes ostomy care as part of toileting practices VS. a need for complex care. The provision of care for those in assisted living who have an ostomy has been identified as an area where there are gaps in understanding and care in some states in the US.
• Continued to be an active participant in the Nursing Community located in Washington DC. The Community consists of numerous nursing-based organizations that weigh in on legislative, policy, and regulatory issues.
